2003 Nissan Sentra problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.

In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.

The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

Common 2003 Nissan Sentra problems

The 2003 Nissan Sentra is a popular compact car, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues with the 2003 Nissan Sentra, based on complaints from owners and available data:

  • Fog lights staying on: Some 2003 Nissan Sentra owners have reported that the fog lights remain on, even when they are turned off. This issue can be caused by a faulty switch or wiring problem and may require professional diagnosis and repair.
  • Coilpacks: Coilpacks, which are responsible for generating the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the engine, can be a problematic component in the 2003 Nissan Sentra. Some owners have reported that coilpacks can fail prematurely, leading to misfires, reduced engine performance, and increased fuel consumption. Replacing faulty coilpacks with new ones can help resolve this issue.
  • Cam and crank sensors: The cam and crank sensors, which monitor the position and rotation of the engine's pistons and crankshaft, can also cause problems in the 2003 Nissan Sentra. Some owners have reported that the sensors can fail, leading to engine stalling, poor performance, and difficulty starting the car. Replacing faulty sensors can help resolve this issue.
  • Minor issues: Some 2003 Nissan Sentra owners have reported minor issues, such as interior rattles and squeaks, minor electrical problems, and occasional transmission shifting issues. These issues can often be resolved through routine maintenance, such as replacing worn-out parts or adjusting loose components.

It's important to note that while these issues are common among 2003 Nissan Sentra owners, not all cars will experience these problems. Additionally, some of these issues may be covered under the car's warranty, so it's always a good idea to consult with a Nissan dealership or authorized service center for professional diagnosis and repair.

AND ALSO THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT DOWN UNTIL I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP... THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS WHEN YOURE ON THE FREEWAY, BECAUSE THE CAR WILL ONLY MOVE 40 MPH. AND ALSO DANGEROUS WHEN CLIMBING HILLS/FREEWAY OVERPASS, BECAUSE THERES NO TORQUE TO GET UP THE HILL, AND THE TRANSMISSION WONT PUT ITSELF IN LOW GEAR UNTIL YOU COME TO A COMPLETE STOP... I THINK ITS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE BECAUSE IT HAPPENED SUDDENLY... IF IT WAS MECHANICAL, I WOULDVE FELT IT SLIPPING GRADUALLY, AND IT NEVER SLIPS. I JUST DROVE IT A COUPLE DAYS BEFORE TO THE BAY AREA AND IT CLIMBED THE HILLS SMOOTHLY, NO PROBLEM.. I HAVE NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, SO IDK WHAT THE PROBLEM COULD BE...

THIS COULD CAUSE THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT TO COME ON, POOR DRIVABILITY (IDLE INSTABILITY, POOR ACCELERATOR), OR THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING DURING VEHICLE OPERATION, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE INSIDE LINING MATERIAL FROM THE ECM BOX. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON DECEMBER 22, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Negative 2003 Nissan Sentra car reviews

I've had my car for almost 6 years and it's still a fun little car to drive. It handles very well. Although I've had some issues with the faulty pre-cat failure and had to replace the ignition coils a few times, overall it's been a reliable car. The gas mileage is not great for long distance trips, but it's perfect for local runs.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my limited edition Sentra that I purchased back in October 2002. Overall, I'm really pleased with the car's performance. It has great acceleration and for the price, there really isn't another car in its class that can compete with all the features that this model provides (ABS/side airbags/165hp, etc). Unfortunately, I did experience a pin-size hole leak in one of the lower radiator tubes no more than a month after I had the car. I was a bit surprised by this and didn't really anticipate experiencing this type of problem from a company such as Nissan. However, all in all, I still think the car is a great buy for commuting. Thanks for listening!

I've owned this car for 4 years now. Although it's been a great first car, I don't feel very safe in it. The engine doesn't seem to run smoothly and it's not great in any weather other than bone dry, even with really nice all season Michelin tires on it. I've noticed that I hydroplane on everything from snow to rain to leaves, even when going slow.

I bought this car brand new in April 2003 and owned it for 3 years. Unfortunately, I experienced a lot of problems during that time. The catalytic converter failed within 2 months of owning the car and had to be replaced. This happened 3 additional times over the 3 year ownership. About 2 1/2 years in the engine blew all by itself and had to be replaced. The alternator failed multiple times and sometimes the car would die while in motion. The car had many rattles/creaks all over it always. The transmission developed many issues and grinds and had sounds like loose metal inside of it. I have read many problems with this car from others as well. I would recommend staying away from it, as it can be an endless money pit.

Wow, I've owned a lot of cars in my life - 18 to be exact! Unfortunately, the worst ones were either this car or the Cadillac I owned. I bought this car used in 2005 with only 27K miles on it, but I only owned it until 2006. It wasn't a great experience, to be honest. In just 6 months, I had to replace the power windows with new motors, and the door wouldn't open due to cheap plastic clips in the door for the connection to the handle. There were also rattles in all the plastic, and the motor was burning oil due to bad piston rings. Even the seat adjuster broke and wouldn't hold the recline adjustment, and I only weighed 135LBS at the time! To top it off, the MPG was awful, even when compared to a Roush Mustang. Unfortunately, it even left me stranded twice. But hey, we all have our bad car stories, right?

I love driving this car! It reminds me of my childhood and combines the power of my 1965 GTO with the reliability of my 1994 Camry. It's fast when you want it to be and still gets great gas mileage. My daughter was impressed when she drove it for the first time, which says a lot about the car. It also gets a lot of compliments from the 'tuners' around my neighborhood. It's definitely worth the money.

  2. Gabriel Rosenbaum 2024-10-02

Great car! It's the best value if you're looking for performance and overall quality. It's 10 times better than the Civic and it's definitely not a Neon. It gets 28-30 mpg and while the 6 speeds could be spread out better at the bottom end, it's just a thrill to drive. It's quick, comfortable, and the standard audio is great. I can't say enough how much I fall in love every time I see it and climb behind the wheel.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I bought the 2003 Spec V yesterday in Molten Silver (Base Package). I'm really happy with it so far! One of the best improvements over the 2002 model is the seat covers. The previous 'loud' lava color has been replaced by a more classy silver/gray with a matching stitch on the steering wheel. It looks a whole lot better, especially with black or silver exterior.

  4. Arturo Pollich 2024-07-28

The Spec-V is a powerful car for its class. The six-speed transmission is awesome, but it can be a little jumpy. As someone who has been driving stick for years, I was hoping for a smoother transmission on this new car. I have Continental ContiSport tires from the dealer, which have been rated poorly for wet roads, but so far they have held up well in rainy conditions. The suspension is really tight. Overall, the car is excellent for its class and value. It has a very sporty look while also being practical and getting pretty good gas mileage.
