2000 Nissan Sentra problems
The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.
In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.
The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

Common 2000 Nissan Sentra problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Nissan Sentra 2000, several common problems have been reported:
- Engine Performance: Complaints have been made about the engine's performance, with specific issues like misfires and idle problems being highlighted. Owners have reported changing components like the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, and Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor to address these problems.
- Sensor and Electrical System Troubles: Owners have faced challenges with various sensors within the vehicle, leading to disabled radar sensors, collision sensors, and screens inside the car. These issues affect driving safety and functionality, including features like cruise control. Problems with the remote entry system and radio malfunctions have also been reported, along with instances of the electrical system shutting down while the car is in use.
- Ignition System Concerns: There have been suggestions to inspect the ignition system thoroughly, focusing on checking the connections and grounding of wires, as well as ensuring the proper functioning of coil packs. This is crucial to address issues related to misfires and idling problems experienced by owners.
These problems with the Nissan Sentra 2000 highlight a range of issues that owners have encountered, from engine performance issues to sensor malfunctions and electrical system troubles. Addressing these issues promptly and accurately is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.
What common problem on Nissan Sentra?
Various fluid leaks, overheating, power loss, or CVT failure are also possible due to these mechanical issues. That said, if you suspect that you are having a transmission issue, be sure to get it checked out by your local mechanic as soon as possible.
How many miles can a 2000 Nissan Sentra last?
2000-2006 Nissan Sentra Lifespan: 150,000 miles
However, many engine-related reports (especially for the 2001-2005 Sentra) are on file with NHTSA. Problems like a bad head gasket are expensive to fix (about $1,500, according to RepairPal) and could cut short a vehicle's life.
Are Nissan Sentra a reliable car?
The Nissan Sentra Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 14th out of 36 for compact cars. The average annual repair cost is $491 which means it has lower than average ownership costs. The severity of repairs is average and the frequency of those issues is low, so major repairs are uncommon for the Sentra.
What year Nissan Sentra has transmission problems?
Reports indicate that a defect affecting 2012-2016 Sentras' continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) can cause temporary loss of power and total failures of the CVTs. Many consumers have reported that the CVT can first cause the cars to shake, judder, stall during sudden acceleration, or completely lose power.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-03-01
- VIN: 3N1CB51D7YL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: CAR HAS ALWAYS HAD A SLIGHT IDLE ISSUE..... WHEN U START IT YOU HAVE TO PRESS THE GAS A BIT OR ELSE IT IMMEDIATELY DIES. ALSO SOMETIMES IF YOU COME TO A STOP THE IDLE JUMPS UP AND DOWN..... HASN'T EVER COMPLETELY DIED IN THOSE INCIDENTS. MY COMPLAINT IS ABOUT THE IGNITION COIL FUSE. A BIT OVER A WEEK AGO THE CAR WAS FINE ALL DAY AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN WOULDN'T START. IT ENDED UP BEING THE FUSE. WE REPLACED IT AND THE CAR WAS FINE FOR A WHILE. TODAY I GOT IN IT GO TO WORK AND IT WOULDN'T START. ONCE AGAIN IT WAS THE FUSE. WHILE AT WORK MY HUSBAND REPLACED IT AND IT BLEW AS SOON AS HE TURNED THE KEY TO START THE CAR. WHEN I GOT HOME I TRIED AGAIN..... SAME OUTCOME. I'VE YET TO TALK TO A MECHANIC TO FIND OUT THE PROBLEM BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THERE'S SEVERAL COMPLAINTS OF THIS EXACT PROBLEM WITH MY MAKE AND MODEL OF CAR. I'D LIKE TO RESOLVE ASAP BUT I DON'T WANT TO PUT MONEY INTO A CAR THAT MAY HAVE SOME PROBLEMS EVEN AFTER THIS. I'D LIKE TO KNOW IF I FALL UNDER THE RECALL? *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-06-22
- VIN: 3N1CB51D7YL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR USED ON 6-22-13. THE GAUGES ON MY DASHBOARD STOPPED WORKING INTERMITTENTLY - I WILL BE DRIVING AND THERE IS NO SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, TACHOMETER, GAS GAUGE OR TEMPERATURE GAUGE. THEY ALL STOP WORKING TOGETHER FOR VARIOUS LENGTHS OF TIME, AND THEN JUST "CLICK" ON AGAIN. THE GAUGES SEEM TO BE STUCK IN PLACE ON THE GAS METER BUT THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD JUST FALL TO THE CORNER (LEFT OR RIGHT DEPENDING ON THE ANGLE IT IS ON WHEN IT STOPS WORKING. THE TACHOMETER SOMETIMES FALLS IN THE CORNER AN OTHER TIMES IT JUST FREEZES WHEN IT STOPS WORKING. THE TEMPERATURE GAUGES DOES THE SAME AS THE TACHOMETER. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT MAKES IT STOP OR COMES BACK ON. THE ODOMETER DISAPPEARS WHEN IT GOES OUT AND REAPPEARS WHEN IT COMES BACK ON BUT DOES SEEM TO MAINTAIN THE MILEAGE WHEN SHOWING OR NOT. LET ME KNOW IF THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE CAR OR NISSAN RESPONSIBLE TO REPAIR THE ISSUE. THE LOCAL DEALER SAID THEY DO NOT MAKE THE PART ANYMORE TO FIX THE POSSIBLE ISSUES. *TR

- Summary: MY 2000 NISSAN SENTRA COMPLETELY STALLED WHILE DRIVING ON A SURFACE STREET. FIRST THE RADIO CUT OUT AND THE "AIR BAG" LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN THE CAR STARTED TO SHAKE A BIT, I NOTICED A BURNT PLASTIC SMELL AND ATTEMPTED TO PULL OVER TO A SIDE STREET AND THAT'S WHEN THE CAR LOST ALL POWER--HEADLIGHTS, DASHBOARD, ENGINE, NOT EVEN THE HAZARDS WORKED. I GENTLY TRIED TO ACCELERATE FORWARD AND THE CAR WENT INTO REVERSE INSTEAD, SO I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND CALLED TRIPLE A. THEY TOWED MY CAR TO MY REGULAR MECHANIC, WHO WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME, AND THE NEXT MORNING HE WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR RIGHT UP AND HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO LOCATE ANY PROBLEM SO FAR. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE CAR HAS STALLED. IN 2007, I HAD THE CAR STALL ON ME A NUMBER OF TIMES (ONCE ON THE FREEWAY) BEFORE MY MECHANIC REPLACED THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR. IN 2009, THE CAR STARTED IDLING ROUGHLY BEFORE STALLING AND THAT PROBLEM WAS TRACED TO A FAULTY EGR CONTROL VALVE CIRCUIT. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-07-29
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 3N1CB51D5YL
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: WE HAD A 2000 NISSAN SENTRA GXE, WITH 83245 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH CAR AND IT HAD ALWAYS BEEN REGULARLY SERVICED. ON JULY 29, 2010 AFTER A NORMAL DAY'S ACTIVITIES WHICH INVOLVED DRIVING TO AND FROM WORK AND A SHORT TRIP WITHIN TOWN TO AND FROM THE LOCAL SWIMMING POOL, IT WAS AS USUAL PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY OF OUR HOME AT 8PM. WE LOCKED THE CAR AND WENT INTO THE HOUSE AND WERE SITTING DOWN TO DINNER WHEN AT 8:20PM WE NOTICED A LARGE PLUME OF SMOKE DRIFT BY THE DINING ROOM WINDOW. WHEN WE WENT OUT TO INVESTIGATE WE SAW THICK BILLOWING SMOKE BLOWING OUT OF THE HOOD OF THE CAR. WE COULD ALSO SEE FLAMES UNDER THE HOOD. THE ENGINE WAS ON FIRE. WE DIALED 911 AND THE FIRE TRUCKS ROLLED IN. THE FIREMEN HAD DIFFICULTY OPENING THE HOOD BECAUSE THE HEAT HAD FUSED THE HOOD TO THE BODY AND THEY HAD TO PUNCH HOLES IN THE SIDE AND USE CROWBARS TO PRY THE HOOD OPEN. AFTER A BRIEF DOUSING WITH FIRE RETARDANT FOAM, THE FIREMEN PUT OUT THE FLAMES WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. ONCE THE FLAMES WERE PUT OUT WE COULD SEE THAT THE ENTIRE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS A MASS OF BURNED PLASTIC AND RUBBER AND CHARRED AND TWISTED METAL. THE INSURANCE COMPANY HAS DECLARED THE CAR TO BE A TOTAL LOSS. THANKFULLY NOBODY WAS INJURED AND OUR HOME WAS NOT DAMAGED. WE ARE SHOCKED AND DISMAYED THAT A SUPPOSEDLY RELIABLE COMPACT CAR COULD WITHOUT ANY APPARENT REASON BURST INTO FLAMES AND DIE LIKE THIS ONE DID. *TR

- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: I HAVE A 2000 NISSAN SENTRA AND TWICE NOW THE "PLASTIC DIP STICK HANDLE" HAS BROKEN OFF WHEN A MECHANIC PULLED IT OUT TO CHANGE THE OIL... THEY COULDN'T GET IT OUT AND I HAD TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER... WHO CHARGES AN OUTRAGEOUS PRICE TO GET IT OUT AND REPLACE IT WITH ANOTHER PLASTIC HANDLED DIP STICK THAT BROKE, AGAIN...... WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND PUT A PLASTIC HANDLE ON A METAL DIP STICK? HOW STUPID. THE ENGINE HEATS UP AND COOLS AND PLASTIC UNDER THOSE CONDITIONS WILL BECOME BRITTLE.. I'D RATHER USE A POT HOLDER TO PULL OUT A UNIFORM "METAL" HANDLE PART OF A SOLID METAL STICK THAN HAVE IT BREAK ALL THE TIME WITH A PLASTIC HANDLE. JUST LIKE THAT BP OIL SPILL... ENGINEERS COMPLICATE THINGS WHEN THE SOLUTION IS SO SIMPLE .... PLEASE, HAVE NISSAN RECALL THIS STUPID PLASTIC HANDLED DIP STICK AND REPLACE IT WITH AN ALL METAL ONE,.... I'LL SUPPLY THE POT HOLDER OR RAG TO PULL OUT THE HOT DIP STICK MADE OF METAL.... THANK YOU! *TR

I'm so glad you found the perfect car! It sounds like you did your research and made a great choice. It's wonderful to hear that after 15k miles, you're still loving it. The car seems to have a lot of zip and be really fun to drive. The dash layout is also really good, and it's great to hear that the build quality has been 100% so far.

I bought this car from the only dealer that would give me credit, but I'm actually really happy with it! It starts well, the driver's seat is so comfortable that I don't need a cushion like I do in many other cars I've driven. It looks good and it's FAST - I've even gone over 100 in it! The controls are well laid out and it's altogether a pleasure to drive. While the back seats may look a little cramped, I've actually never sat in them as a passenger and none of my passengers have really complained, so it can't be that bad.

You got this car new for $15K and have been completely happy with it. Although you wish you had gotten the moonroof and VLSD, you are satisfied otherwise. You mentioned that the exterior styling is kind of plain, but not bad looking, and is definitely improved by the spoiler. On windy days, especially at highway speeds, you get a strange whining/buzzing sound from behind the center console, but you have no idea what's loose. You absolutely love the handling, and the engine has plenty of oomph, although the clutch does slip occasionally.

So far, I've been extremely satisfied with this car. It's been reliable, comfortable, and fun to drive. Although the springs are very stiff in the SE model, which may not be ideal for putting on makeup, the performance and cornering that is gained is well worth the harshness of the ride. I would definitely recommend this car. It's quite spacious, easy to insure, and fun to drive.

I've had my car for two years and 20K miles, and it's been great! My wife has a Civic VP, but she's always taking MY CAR! I have the SE Model, and it has tons of get-up-and-go. This car is a great value for someone looking to get their first car or just trying to find something to get around town with. I've only had to take it in for a recall once, and it was done in ten minutes. The only downside is that the back seat is only big enough for my two Jack Russell Terriers. My 6-foot-tall friend hates it because he's always kneeing me in the back of the chair. Other than that, I love it! It was affordable and it's peppy. I would recommend this car to anyone, and I have!

The clutch was defective. The repeated replacement of different sensors may be attributed to engine heat.

Hey there! I'm a bit concerned because my engine light is on and a friend mentioned something about Head and Cylinder Gasket Problems with Sentra/Altimas. I've noticed a loss in power and rougher downshifting, but it could just be due to needing a tune up. My brakes are still tight and good, but I've changed my tires and they still skid and slide under braking. I'm having a bit of trouble changing my 3rd brake light and my speakers blew on my stereo. Unfortunately, the resale value is extremely low at $3500. I'm not a fan of driving in bad weather, so I try to avoid it as much as possible. Thanks for your help!

I purchased this car brand new from the dealership. Unfortunately, I have experienced 5 recalls and several other issues. Like many of you, I have heard the 'chirping noise' that the belts make, and was told that it is normal. While I can deal with an annoyingly noisy car, I could not tolerate the catalytic converter and the PCM (the car's computer) both failing. It is worth noting that they are covered by the Federal Emissions Warranty of 8 years/80,000 miles. However, the dealership (not the one I bought it from) had me spend over $800 on unnecessary repairs. In the end, I decided to trade in my unreliable Sentra for a reliable and safe Civic.

This vehicle served its purpose by providing transportation. Although the interior noise was quite high at highway speed and the seats were very hard and uncomfortable, the motor provided plenty of pickup and the transmission shifted smoothly. Unfortunately, the car is no longer with us after being hit head-on by a DUI driver. However, it provided much protection to the driver, despite significant front-end damage with little interior distortion.
