Nissan Quest problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Quest is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Nissan for model years 1993–2017 over four generations.

The first two generations (internally designated V40 and V41) of the Quest were short-wheelbase models co-developed and manufactured with Ford, aside its badge engineered Mercury Villager. For model year 2004 and the third generation (V42), Nissan ended its joint venture with Ford, manufacturing the Quest on its own. For model year 2011, the fourth generation (RE52) became a widened variant of the Nissan Elgrand minivan and was now manufactured in Japan. For the preceding generations, the Quest loosely shared its chassis and powertrain with the Nissan Maxima.

Following the decline of minivan sales in North America, Nissan ended sales of the Quest after the 2017 model year.

Common Nissan Quest problems

The Nissan Quest, a popular minivan produced from 1993 to 2017, has been known to have several issues based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most common problems with the Nissan Quest:

  • Airbag deployment system: Some Nissan Quest models had struggles with the airbag deployment system due to a faulty airbag module and bad passenger seat occupancy sensors. This issue led to improper airbag deployment, which could be dangerous during accidents.
  • Transmission problems: Many Nissan Quest drivers consider transmission-related problems the worst thing that can happen to their minivan. The Quest can develop various issues like hesitation when shifting gears, rough transition during a shift, abrupt deceleration, reduced acceleration, and transmission failure. Replacing faulty Nissan Quest transmission parts can be costly, and drivers have reported the problem persisting or returning despite costly repairs.
  • Rattling noises: Of all the engine problems that a Nissan Quest can develop, rattling noises are considered the worst of the lot. These unpleasant noises are often caused by worn-out timing chains, timing chain guides, or timing chain tensioners. While the engine can sometimes still run fine despite the background rattling, it can potentially get damaged.
  • Brake problems: Nissan Quest brakes are generally reliable, but some brake problems can show up fairly often in certain model years. These issues can include brake pedal pulsation, brake noise, and reduced brake performance.
  • Interior accessories: Some Nissan Quest owners have reported issues with general interior accessories, such as power windows, power seats, and climate control systems not functioning properly.

These issues have been reported more frequently in certain model years, such as 2004 and 2007, which are considered the worst Nissan Quest years to avoid due to their higher frequency of problems and higher repair costs.

  • VIN: JN8AE2KP2C9
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The CVT transmission on this vehicle has failed. The vehicle is jerking and and stalls while driving. If I'm at a light stopped and the light changes to go, the vehicle won't move unless I put my foot all the way down on the accelerator then it Jenks and starts to move. I took it to Sheridan Nissan in Delaware, and they told me this has been the issue with the CVT transmission and I need to just get rid of the van. To get a new one put in is over $7000 with just a 12 Mos12,000 miles warranty and they say it may go out again. I was told by another dealership that Nissan new about this problem, but won't fix it. I've noticed that they have replaced CVT transmissions in other Nissan vehicles and other years, but seem to skip the 2012 Nissan Quest. The engine light came on after it started jerking and I had it towed to Nissan and then they told me that the transmission is slipping. They told me I could drive it home, but to "get rid of it because it doesn't have much life left." Please make Nissan recall these transmissions like they did others. If they are all CVT transmissions, why are some being fixed and others being ignored? Please help.

Had checked Cookeville Nissan [XXX] light on and they turned off saying it checked ok after a cold start for $230. It is loud now at 114,998 miles! This auto must have defective parts since Gateway has serviced it regularly. I am concerned about driving. Talked to consumer affairs of Nissan and was told it was over 65,000 miles and not valid. • VIN: JN8AE2KP2G9
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Car need transmission replaced - there is no warning on car that transmission is having major issues (ie no check engine light). My car shakes on turning this has been on going since I purchased the car in 2017. In late 2023 the car did not have as much pick up power like it used to and had a whining noise once you drive for a while (without the power it used to). There were no check engine light warning to date. On 1/12/24 I used auto zone engine diagnostic and following error codes came up - P17FO - CVT JUDDER P17F2 -JUDDER T/C inspection Diagnostic at AAMCO ON 3/25/24 show additional issues that don’t show any warning signs eg check engine light PER AAMCO additional issues: Engine missing cylinder 3,4; and cylinder 1 is misfiring. Transmission juddering around 2nd gear, chain slipping under pressure…transmission having internal mechanical failure. I am not sure if these issues are serious enough to show as check engine. If they should I don’t know why my car check engine light is not on?

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-23
  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-09
  • VIN: JN8AE2KP9H9
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Driving our van out of town, we started having problems with the transmission 2 hours into our drive. We have never had problems out of the transmission. When we accelerate from a stop it would give a shutter and sometimes a pop. It was very dangerous turning into the traffic as it was shuttering you loose power and could get hit. When we stopped at a store where i could check things out at turning the van off. When we started the vehicle it would not go into forward or reverse. We had it towed and had to pay over $4500 to replace the transmission with a new one. The mechanic said they get these all the time because it has a cvt transmission and they are no good. The replaced and refunded a lot of people that had different makes and model. I don’t understand why they don’t on a Nissan Quest . Nissan knows this is a problem. We had our entire family in the van and could have gotten hurt or killed. Nissan needs to do the right thing here and reimburse or replace them.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-17
  • Date Complaint: 2023-07-05
  • VIN: JN8AE2KP4G9
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The control arms on the vehicle malfunctioned and had to be replaced. I typically lost control of steering causing the vehicle to jerk in one direction or the other. This was repaired almost a year ago. I had the vehicle serviced at a independent service center. It could have possible caused an accident had I not been able to counteract the loss of steering. I am currently experiencing this same issue again and was notified in May 2023 that the control arms have once again malfunctioned. There are no warning lights for this issue, I noticed it when the car seemed to need a front end alignment but once I took it to the shop they confirmed that the control arms had malfunctioned. I researched this issue and saw that there was a recall of these exact same parts for 2016 Nissan Quest vehicles used as emergency vehicles. I am concerned that this is some sort of on going issue, that is costing $1600 + on every repair.

Latest negative Nissan Quest car reviews

  1. Malachi Kuvalis 2025-08-24

    Vehicle year: 2013

We decided to try out a Nissan instead of another Honda, but unfortunately, it didn't meet our expectations. The transmission was not to our liking, as it was jerky when starting from a stop and didn't perform well when we needed to quickly merge into traffic. Despite the promise of better gas mileage, we were not impressed with the average of 15.9 mpg according to the computer. However, we were fortunate that this was a lease, so we were able to return it and get an SUV. After returning the lease, we ended up purchasing a Honda Odyssey, which has been a great fit for our family. We particularly love the automatic opening back doors. In our research, we discovered that the 2013 Nissan Quest did not perform well in a new crash test, while the Odyssey did. Overall, we are very happy with our decision to go with the Odyssey over the Quest.

Van has been very economical and useful. It has had no major mechanical problems, and although it was recalled for accelerator sticking issues, it was fixed promptly. However, the issue has resurfaced, and I am concerned about safety. Unfortunately, the paint job was not up to par, and after only 4 months, there were pits all over it down to the metal. Despite being garage-kept and driven only in town, Nissan refused to repaint it, claiming that bugs were the cause. Although the warranty did not cover it, I am still driving it with the pits in the paint. On the bright side, it has 58,000 miles and still runs well, with only oil and tire changes needed. It gets an impressive 26 miles per gallon on the highway, making it great on mileage.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Nissan Quest. When I first saw the style of the minivan, I fell in love with it and decided to purchase it. I read reviews comparing it to other minivans and everything seemed great with the Quest. However, shortly after my warranty expired, I started to notice a whining noise coming from the engine. I took it to the dealership and they kept it overnight, charging me $100 to diagnose the issue. I was surprised to learn that the estimate to replace my timing chain, both primary and secondary, along with the guides was going to cost $3,000! I decided to get a second opinion and was informed that Nissan has known about this issue for years and even has a Technical Service Bulletin out. I had never even heard about a TSB before! I hope this information is helpful to you.

I purchased this car a year and a half ago and have had no issues with it whatsoever. While the upper lumbar of the front seats is angled too far back, making it difficult to press your back against it, I find the interior to be very spacious. Despite the exterior design giving the impression of a sleeker car, I appreciate the amount of room inside. Recently, I took a 1000K mile trip with three adults and three children and found it to be a very comfortable and safe ride. The car has plenty of power and the gas mileage was excellent on the highway. However, it does not perform as well in the city (15/24).

undefinedIf the grandparents want to come with us and the kids, we can all fit in one car. However, I must be honest and say that after spending thousands on frequent and expensive repairs, I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone.

After spending nearly 3 months test driving both used and every new minivan currently on the market, I finally drove the Nissan Quest. Without realizing it, I saved the best for last. My wife and I were both unexcited about purchasing a new van to replace our 10 year old MPV. But after driving the Quest, we were finally able to say goodbye to our old van and sign on the dotted line. The Sienna and Odyssey just didn't have the same quiet and refined ride that the Quest has, nor did they have the same level of quality materials used on the interior. We were truly impressed.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 99 Quest GLE that I bought used in 2002. It was a great deal compared to other used cars from Honda, Toyota, and Dodge. What's more, it came with more luxury features! But the best part is that it fits perfectly in my garage, being 6 inches shorter than the current Odysseys, Siennas, and Grand Caravans. I can easily park it behind my lawnmower and bicycles. Despite its size, it still has three rows of seats, which is perfect for family vacations. The 1999 model even came with a TV/VCR as standard, which my kids absolutely love. And the TV reception is surprisingly good! I used to have a 1998 Mercury Villager, but the 1999 Quest GLE is so much better with side doors on both sides, 6 extra inches of room, and a 15 horsepower boost that makes the performance just fine.

We purchased this vehicle just 2 days ago and I must say, I am extremely pleased with it! It has tons of features that make it stand out from the rest. When I test drove it, I compared it to just about every other car out there and this one was by far the best ride! I even test drove a Honda and a Nissan back to back, but the Honda had too much road noise. We got all the features we wanted with the Nissan and saved $7000 compared to what we would have paid for the Honda! I highly recommend haggling over the phone and email, as it is much less stressful. Good luck!

I really love this vehicle! I've put over 56,000 miles on it since I purchased it approximately 4 years ago and have had no major issues, just normal maintenance. I feel safe no matter where I go, whether it's in the city or on the road. Of course, like any car, it's important to keep up with regular oil changes. The Quest doesn't wear down brakes like some of my previous cars did. Unfortunately, the automatic antenna has stopped working, but the radio still works just fine. In the future, I plan to continue buying Nissan or foreign-made cars. I don't make enough money to take any chances.

We initially had our sights set on the Sedona, Sienna or GC for over 6 months, as we were not looking for a Quest. Although I was already preapproved, I was not convinced about the reliability issue of the three, and the high price but low feature content of the Sienna. However, when we walked into a dealership and test drove a Quest, we were blown away. The comments about high price and limited cargo room were simply not true. The year-end clearance made the price very competitive, and the van is very spacious, with a PERMANENT 3rd row storage and regular 3rd row storage, for a total of 37 cubic feet! After 2.8 years of ownership (and 55K miles), we have found that the mileage has been consistently excellent for a minivan this size, with combined City/Hwy at 23 mpg and pure hwy mpg up to 27.5, depending on how we drive. We have not experienced any rattles whatsoever, and the seats are very comfortable. The available storage is also underrated, with about 37 cu ft available, on par with other vans. The engine and overall performance are the best selling points, as we could drive a minivan fully loaded in the winter and still get up to 27.5 mpg on the highway. Mixed driving is consistently at 23 mpg. After 4 years of ownership (93K miles), we did experience a CEL issue, but it has been resolved, inadvertently caused when we had a quick lube shop do a fuel system cleaning. The carbon build-up/cleaning caused issues with the rear O2 sensors, but I had them cleaned and the CEL has not come back on since. Although I paid below market for the base model, I regret not getting all the Google Play/iOS features. My combined summer mileage has been 22 mpg, but I expect it to improve in the fall. After 7 years of ownership and 154K miles, I have had to replace the alternator at 110K miles and the factory-installed battery at 142K miles, which is not bad. I also changed the spark plugs at 144K miles, which improved my highway mileage from 24 MPG to 27 MPG. Fortunately, there have been no squeaks or rattles, and the upholstery, car paint, and electricals are holding up well. Overall, I have not experienced any mechanical problems.
