2002 Nissan Quest problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Quest is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Nissan for model years 1993–2017 over four generations.

The first two generations (internally designated V40 and V41) of the Quest were short-wheelbase models co-developed and manufactured with Ford, aside its badge engineered Mercury Villager. For model year 2004 and the third generation (V42), Nissan ended its joint venture with Ford, manufacturing the Quest on its own. For model year 2011, the fourth generation (RE52) became a widened variant of the Nissan Elgrand minivan and was now manufactured in Japan. For the preceding generations, the Quest loosely shared its chassis and powertrain with the Nissan Maxima.

Following the decline of minivan sales in North America, Nissan ended sales of the Quest after the 2017 model year.

  • Summary: NISSAN ALTIMA - CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON NOVEMBER 2006. NISSAN DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER SENSOR COULD BE BAD AND NOT NECESSARILY THE PART. NOVEMBER, 2008 VEHICLE FAILED STATE EMISSIONS TEST - TOLD IT WAS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. NISSAN DEALERSHIP STATES THE WARRANTY RAN OUT AT 80K MILES - THE CAR HAS 83K MILES. HAVE NOT HAD THE CAR LOOKED AT BY DEALERSHIP MECHANIC YET FOR FEAR THE ESTIMATED $1000 REPAIR COULD TURN INTO AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT AT A MUCH HIGHER COST. *TR

  • VIN: 1N4BL11D62C
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: SINCE 09/07 I HAVE PAID MORE THAN $2500.00 TO REPLACE, CHANGE, CHECK, AND MAINTAIN THE OIL IN MY CAR. I KNOW HAVE TO CHANGE MY OIL EVERY 1,500 MILES INSTEAD OF EVERY 3,000 SO IT WONT BURN OUT THE ENGINE. IT IS A 2002 ALTIMA BUT APPARENTLY THE "VIN" NUMBER IS NOT ONE THAT WAS IN THE RECALLED NUMBERS YET IT IS HAVING THE EXACT PROBLEM THAT THE OTHER WERE RECALLED FOR. HOW IS IT THAT RANDOM NUMBER ARE CHOSEN TO FIX AND OTHERS ARE LEFT TO SHELL OUT AND MORE LIKELY HAVE TO BUY A NEW (OF COURSE NOT A NISSAN AT THIS POINT) CARE. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-11-17
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: MY NEW CAR WAS PERFORMING AS IT WAS SUPPOSED TO AND MAINTENANCE WAS BEING COMPLETED ON A REGULAR SCHEDULE. MY VEHICLE STARTED TO CUT OFF DURING OPERATION IN 2004/5. IT WOULD HAPPEN IN THE DRIVEWAY, EXPRESSWAYS, ETC. IT DIDN'T MATTER. I TOOK IT TO THE NISSAN DEALER AND THEY CLAIMED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. NEXT MY HEADLIGHT BEGAN TO BLOW A BULB EVERY 2,0000-3,000 MILES. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED IT. THIS OCCURRED IN 2005. MID- JULY TO LATE NOVEMBER 2006 MY CAR BEGAN TO STALL IN COLD/WARM WEATHER. I TOOK IT TO THE NISSAN DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND. MY CAR STARTED TO CONSUME OIL AT AN ALARMING RATE IN APRIL 2007. IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER YET AGAIN AND I WAS TOLD IT HAD INTERNAL ENGINE DAMAGE AND THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE EXTERNAL COMPONENTS. I WAS QUOTED $4,000-$4,200 FOR A REPLACEMENT ENGINE. I HAVE ALWAYS GOTTEN MY REPAIR WORK AND OIL CHANGES AT NISSAN DEALERS AND NOW WHEN MY EXTENDED WARRANTY IS GONE I AM TOLD I NEED TO BUY AN ENGINE. THIS IS UNFAIR AND COSTLY. I CANNOT USE THE CAR FOR WORK COMMUTES OR TO GET TO SCHOOL. NISSAN HAS BEEN TOLD MANY TIMES ABOUT THEIR PRODUCT FAILURE AND THE MECHANICS BASICALLY ONLY CARE THAT YOU BUY/NOT BUY A MOTOR. I SHOULD NOT BE PAYING FOR THIS CAR WHEN IT IS CLEARLY A MECHANICAL DESIGN DEFECT THAT HAS CAUSED ME SO MUCH TIME, MONEY AND PAIN. I LEFT IT AT MY SISTER'S APARTMENT FOR 3 MONTHS BECAUSE IT WOULD START AND CUT OFF, IF AT ALL. I DROVE THE CAR THE OTHER DAY AFTER TRYING TO GET IT STARTED FOR 2 DAYS. IT DROVE LIKE A DREAM. NOW I CAN'T GET IT STARTED TO EVEN GET TO AND FROM ANYWHERE. I HAVE NUMEROUS REASONS FOR THINKING NISSAN SHOULD BE LIABLE. WHATEVER THEY ARE CURRENTLY DOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS OKAY BUT THERE ARE LOTS AND LOTS OF ENGINES DAMAGED DUE TO THESE RECALL ITEMS THAT WERE NOT HANDLED BY THE DEALERS AND NISSAN PROPERLY. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-06-01
  • VIN: 4N2ZN17T62D
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL OCCURRENCES WHEN I WENT TO START MY VEHICLE AND THE RADIO WOULD NOT COME ON AND THE CLOCK ON THE RADIO WOULD NOT DISPLAY THE TIME. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS A BLOWN FUSE. I REPLACED THE FUSE BUT THIS EVENT KEPT OCCURRING OVER AND OVER AGAIN. ONE DAY IT WAS RAINING AND THE RADIO WOULD NOT COME ON NOR WOULD THE TIME BE DISPLAYED ON THE SCREEN AND THEN I FOUND OUT MY WIPERS WOULD NOT WORK EITHER. SO WHENEVER THIS OCCURRED AGAIN, I WOULD CHECK THE WIPERS AND FIND OUT THAT WHEN THE RADIO WAS NOT WORKING, NEITHER WOULD THE WIPERS. I WOULD HAVE TO STOP THE VEHICLE, START AND STOP THE ENGINE REPEATEDLY UNTIL THE RADIO WOULD COME ON. ONCE THAT HAPPENED, MY WIPERS WOULD BEGIN WORKING TOO. THIS IS STILL AN ONGOING PROBLEM. MY WIFE HAD THE VEHICLE AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR MAINTENANCE AND WHEN SHE LEFT, THE RADIO WAS NOT WORKING SO SHE PULLED BACK INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND STOPPED THE VEHICLE, TALKED TO THE SERVICE AGENT. HE WENT OUT AND STARTED THE VEHICLE AND THE RADIO WAS WORKING. THERE IS DEFINITELY AN ELECTRICAL SHORT SOMEWHERE IN THIS VEHICLE. *JB

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-09-14
  • VIN: 1N4AL11D02C
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I WAS INFORMED BY NISSAN THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM 12/03. I FOLLOWED UP AND HAD IT REPAIRED OR REPLACED , AT THIS POINT I'M UNCERTAIN WHAT HAPPENED. TODAY, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS INOPERABLE AND IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY 800.00 TO REPLACE IT. THIS IS A DEVICE THAT IS APART OF THE ENGINE EXHAUST RECALL THAT WAS DONE IN '03. BECAUSE 2 YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE THE RECALL WAS DONE, I AM NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY AND I AM FORCED TO MAKE ANOTHER COSTLY REPAIR. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE NUMEROUS RECALLS AND REPAIRS ON THE "NORTH AMERICAN CAR OF THE YEAR!" *NM

I JUST HAPPENED TO CHECK FOR RECALLS AND THE RECALL HAS STATED THAT MY ISSUE IS DUE TO A DEFECT AND IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT. THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY. I CONTACTED NISSAN WHO, OF COURSE, IS NO HELP AND WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN # WAS NOT A PART OF THAT RECALL. THEY COULDN'T EVEN TELL ME WHERE MY RECALLS WERE EVEN REPAIRED. I WISH MORE PEOPLE WOULD LET THE NHTSA KNOW ABOUT THIS & ADVISE ANYONE YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH NOT TO BUY A NISSAN. IT'S NOT WORTH IT!! *NM

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-05-05
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I'M THOROUGHLY DISGUSTED WITH THE DESIGN AND QUALITY OF THE HEADLIGHTS ON MY 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. WITHIN 6 MONTHS I'VE NOW SPENT $600 ($300 EACH INCLUDING LABOR) TO REPLACE BOTH HEADLIGHTS ON MY AUTO ALL BECAUSE IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO REPLACE A $6 BULB. THERE IS A SEVERE DESIGN FLAW AND SHOWS LACK OF QUALITY PRODUCED BY NISSAN. APPARENTLY NISSAN IS NOT CONCERNED ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THEIR PRODUCT AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION ONCE THE PAPERWORK IS SIGNED AND THE DEAL IS DONE ON THE SALE OF THEIR AUTOS. I PLAN TO RETURN TO TOYOTA FOR MY NEXT AUTO PURCHASE.

WHEN I LOOKED OUTSIDE MY VAN WAS COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES AND WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED FROM THE FIRE DAMAGE. PREVIOUS SERVICE HISTORY INCLUDED: CHECK OF DRIVERS SIDE POWER WINDOW FOR OUT OF TRACK PROBLEMS AND PROBLEMS WITH ELECTRICAL (CONSOLE LIGHTS AND TAIL LIGHTS) ACTING IMPROPERLY WHICH THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULD NOT RE-DUPLICATE. WORKED WITH AUTUMN AT NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, VERY RUDE AND UNHELPFUL. • Summary: THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY PARTS ON THIS ALTIMA ARE DEFECTIVE AND HAD TO BE REPLACED ON BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE OF THE CAR. PRIOR TO REPLACEMENT THE LIGHTS WERE REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES. BUT THE ACTUAL DEFECT CAUSED BY THE LIGHTS BEING TOO HOT AND THEN MELTING THE PLASTIC WAS NOT BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION UNTIL EXPENSES HAD BEEN INCURRED ON REPLACEMENT OF THE LIGHTS SEVERAL TIMES. WHENTHE LEFT SIDE WAS PROPERLY DIAGNOSED FINALLY, THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY BUT THE DEALER DENIED REPLACEMENT AND REFUSED TO ATTEMPT ANY SOLUTION. DUE TO THE EXPENSE OF REPLACING THE LIGHTS AND THE LEFT HEAD LIGHT ASSEMBLY PART, I HAD TO WAIT TO REPLACE THE RIGHT SIDE. THE PARTS COMPONENTS FOLKS SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE. MORE IMPORTANTLY NISSAN SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. SEVERAL MECHANICS INCLUDING ONE SERVICE PERSON AT THE NISSAN DEALER TOLD ME THEY HAD SEEN SEVERAL ALTIMAS WITH THIS PROBLEM BUT UNTIL THERE WAS A RECALL THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO.*AK

  • Summary: I WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT TODAY AND THE BRAKES NOT WORKING HAD A LOT TO DO WITH IT. AS I NOTICED A CAR IN FRONT OF ME, I APPLIED MY BRAKES ONLY TO FIND THAT IT DIDN'T DO ANYTHING AND WENT TO THE FLOOR SO I TRIED AGAIN (STILL ABOUT TO HIT ANOTHER CAR) AND THEY WORKED FINE. I AM WAITING TO HEAR IF THERE WAS A FAILURE WITH THEM, BUT THE FACT THAT THEY WORKED THE SECOND TIME LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THEY WILL FIND NOTHING WRONG.....I KNOW THERE ARE OTHER BRAKE COMPLAINTS WITH NISSANS, SO I HOPE THIS WARNING HELPS. ALSO, I WAS GOING AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 50MPH AND WHEN I HIT THE CAR AHEAD, THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. IT WAS A FRONTAL HIT, MORE TO THE RIGHT SIDE, AND NEITHER AIR BAG WORKED. NO INJURIES BUT MY NECK AND BACK HURT. I HAVE JUST REPAIRED SO MUCH ON MY SENTRA, AND I AM NOT HAPPY WITH THE PROBLEMS I HAVE INCURRED WITH NISSAN, WE'LL SEE IF I EVER BUY ANOTHER.*AK

Negative 2002 Nissan Quest car reviews

  1. Philip Greenfelder 2024-09-21

The Quest is not a flashy car that will turn heads or zoom around town, but it has always been reliable. As an older couple, my spouse and I appreciate the luxury of heated leather seats and a VCR, but what really sold us was the affordable price. It provides just enough hauling room for our needs, and we feel like we're riding in style.

  2. Friedrich McLaughlin 2024-04-02

Hey there! I noticed that you mentioned the van has a bit of a smell. Is there anything I can do to help freshen it up for you?

  3. Lee Herzog 2024-02-19

Just picked up this van and I think it's a great deal. Nissan did an amazing job keeping this design fresh until the new 2003 model appears (rumored anyway). The interior is a huge improvement over the old model and the size is perfect for in-town/parking garages. The Nissan P/up, Altima, and Sentra I had were all reliable and never gave me any problems.

Positive 2002 Nissan Quest car reviews

  1. Mose Kuphal 2024-11-27

Of all the new vans we have seen on the road and have looked in the web, we liked 3 of them the best. We have road tested the Toyota Sienna, Honda Oddesey, and Nissan Quest. We wanted a van with an attractive exterior so as we can feel proud to drive and own the vehicle. The Nissan Quest exterior looks much better than the other two although the Sienna was close for us. The Interior had to look attractive also or we would not buy the Van. The Nissan Quest had the best looking interior. Very attractive control panel!! Love it! The driving was good, the ride is smooth and overall the Nissan Quest was the best!! We bought the Nissan Quest!!

  2. Oscar Hane 2024-11-22

This van is something else! It has great power and the TV feature is fantastic. I can't wait to see the new remodeled Quest that Nissan has in store, but for now, this van will do. Great job Nissan! As for Bill, let's focus on the positives of the van for now.

  3. Jeffry Willms 2024-11-05

Fun to drive...as fun as a minivan can be.

  4. Tillman Wilderman 2024-11-03

I'm so glad to hear that you've had a trouble-free first year of ownership! The Quest really caught my attention because of its reputation for long-term durability and low up-front cost. While it may not be the newest model out there, it still has a lot of great features. The engine may be a little old and weak, but it still has decent low-end torque. And while the body may groan and moan a bit, I think it adds character to the van. Personally, I love the interior, handling, and overall appearance of the vehicle.

  5. Arjun Crist 2024-09-08

This is my third Quest. They have all been great vehicles. It's fantastic that it even pulls my 21-foot bay boat with ease. The kids absolutely adore the entertainment system (our second), and my wife and I can now have a conversation without any interruptions from the kids.
