1995 Nissan Quest problems
The Nissan Quest is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Nissan for model years 1993–2017 over four generations.
The first two generations (internally designated V40 and V41) of the Quest were short-wheelbase models co-developed and manufactured with Ford, aside its badge engineered Mercury Villager. For model year 2004 and the third generation (V42), Nissan ended its joint venture with Ford, manufacturing the Quest on its own. For model year 2011, the fourth generation (RE52) became a widened variant of the Nissan Elgrand minivan and was now manufactured in Japan. For the preceding generations, the Quest loosely shared its chassis and powertrain with the Nissan Maxima.
Following the decline of minivan sales in North America, Nissan ended sales of the Quest after the 2017 model year.

Common 1995 Nissan Quest problems
The Nissan Quest, produced from 1993 to 2017, has been a popular vehicle in the used car market. While many consider it one of the better minivan models, it has its share of problems. The 2004 and 2007 model years have been reported as the most problematic. Transmission issues are common, with drivers experiencing hesitation when shifting gears, rough transitions, abrupt deceleration, reduced acceleration, and transmission failure. Replacing faulty Nissan Quest transmission parts can be costly and the problem may persist or return despite repairs. Some 2007 Nissan Quest transmissions tend to jerk while driving, accompanied by hesitation, slippage, and failure to engage gears. Even late-generation units like the 2016 model year can experience jerking and hesitation while shifting between gears. Some 2012 Nissan Quests may also develop similar issues leading to premature transmission failure.
Engine problems are also common, with rattling noises being considered the worst. These noises are often caused by worn-out timing chains, timing chain guides, or timing chain tensioners. While the engine can sometimes still run fine, it can potentially get damaged. Many units belonging to the 2004, 2006, and 2007 model years are particularly prone to engine noises.
Brake problems can also occur in the Nissan Quest. While generally reliable, some brake problems can show up fairly often in certain model years. It's important to address any brake issues promptly for safety reasons.
The first-generation Quest, produced from 1993 to 1998, has solid reliability ratings. However, due to their age, these Quests may have issues related to aging parts. It's recommended to only consider these models if your budget doesn't allow for a more recent vehicle. The 1995 Nissan Quest is a good option, but it's advisable to skip the first two years of the Quest to avoid the problems typically found in the first years of an all-new vehicle.
In summary, the Nissan Quest has several common problems, particularly with its transmission and engine. It's important to thoroughly research safety ratings, fuel economy, and other factors before buying a Nissan Quest. The 2004 and 2007 model years are considered the worst, with the 2007 model year having the most transmission jerking complaints. The 2004, 2006, and 2007 model years are also prone to engine noises.
What is the most common problem in the Nissan Quest?
Common problems of the Nissan Quest include transmission troubles, engine problems, and brake problems.
Is a Nissan Quest a reliable car?
The Nissan Quest Reliability Rating is 3.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 5th out of 8 for minivans.

- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1995 NISSAN QUEST. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. AFTER HAVING THE STARTER AND BATTERY REPLACED, THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY WOULD ALSO TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 236,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 260,000.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-01-01
- VIN: 4N2DN11W5SD
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: (THIS IS MY THIRD COMPLAINT REGARDING THE SAME ISSUE. SEE EARLIER COMPLAINTS (10208146 AND 10208146) FOR ADDITIONAL DETAILS.) THIS IS THE SEVENTH (7TH) TIME THE FRONT-PASSENGER-SIDE LAP BELT RETRACTOR (MOUNTED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR POST / BODY FRAME) HAS JAMMED OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS OR SO. FOR THE 6TH REPAIR/REPLACEMENT (AND NOW THE 7TH WHICH IS PENDING ARRIVAL OF YET ANOTHER REPLACEMENT PART) I WENT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP, BUSAM NISSAN, 1501 EAST KEMPER ROAD CINCINNATI, OH 45246 (513) 771-8100. THE 6TH UNIT THEY INSTALLED LASTED ONLY ABOUT 2 WEEKS BEFORE JAMMING EARLY THIS YEAR. THEY THEN CONFIRMED THE FAILURE AND THE DEALERSHIPS SERVICE MANAGER SAID THEY WOULD GET WITH THE FACTORY BEFORE SIMPLY PUTTING IN YET ANOTHER WAREHOUSE-STOCKED "CURRENT-DESIGN" BELT RETRACTOR THAT WOULD LIKELY HAVE THE SAME FAILURE AS ALL THE OTHERS. AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS I CHECKED IN TO ASK WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ORDERED PART. THEY SAID THE FACTORY HAD YET TO RESPOND WITH A BETTER/PERMANENT SOLUTION. I SAID FOR NOW I'D RATHER GO AHEAD AND GET ANOTHER WAREHOUSE-STOCKED "CURRENT-DESIGN" ONE RE-INSTALLED THAN CONTINUE TO OPEN-ENDED WAITING WITH NO WORKING BELT AT ALL. AND I'D KEEP COMING BACK FOR REPAIRS TO GET THE FACTORY'S ATTENTION SINCE IT COSTS THEM EACH TIME A DEALERSHIP GETS REIMBURSED. AT PRESENT I'M AWAITING THAT WAREHOUSE-STOCKED "CURRENT-DESIGN" REPLACEMENT UNIT TO ARRIVE. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT BUSAM NISSAN TENTATIVELY AGREED WITH ME THAT IT MIGHT BE THAT THE LUBRICANTS HAVE DRIED OUT, BUT THAT HE COULD NOT "EXPERIMENT" WITH IT, SUCH AS GENTLY WARMING UP A UNIT IN AN OVEN TO SEE IF IT WOULD POSSIBLY HELP ANY INTERNAL LUBRICANTS RE-DISTRIBUTE AND ALLOW THE MECHANISM TO PROPERLY RELEASE. HE SAID THAT HIS OR MY DOING SO WOULD END ANY FREE FACTORY REPLACEMENT POSSIBILITIES AND FIXES. AGAIN, I DOUBT I'M THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM IF THIS UNIT IS USED IN OTHER NISSAN MODELS AS WELL. *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-11-28
- VIN: 4N2DN11W4SD
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: WE HAVE A 1995 NISSAN QUEST AT 75,000 MILEAGES THAT IS WELL MAINTAINED AND RUNS VERY SMOOTHLY. WE DROPPED OFF THE CAR TO APPLE NISSAN IN YORK PA ON 11/26 FOR A PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE (CHANGE OF TIMING BELT, WATER PUMP, THERMOSTAT, ALL DRIVING BELTS) OF ITS ENGINE. AFTER WE PAID $848 AND DROVE IT HOME, I FOUND THE COOLANT IN THE RESERVOIR WAS TOTALLY EMPTY SO I ADDED COOLANT ON THE FOLLOWING TWO DAYS TO MAINTAIN IT AT A PROPER LEVEL. ON THE THIRD DAY (11/28) WHEN I DROVE THE CAR TO WORK, ITS CRANKSHAFT BROKE AND THE WHOLE ENGINE WAS DESTROYED. THE TOTAL DRIVING DISTANCE IS LESS THAN 50 MILES AFTER THE SERVICE. THE NISSAN DEALER BLAMED NISSAN INC. HAD DESIGNED THE CRANKSHAFT TOO SMALL SO THE SHAFT IS EASY TO BREAK AND COULD BE BROKEN ANYTIME LIKE A TV AND MINE WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE, WHILE NISSAN USA SAID THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED SO IT COULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. NONE OF THEM WOULD TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY, WHETHER THE BROKEN SHAFT WAS DUE TO IMPROPER SERVICE OR IMPROPER DESIGN BY NISSAN. AS A RESULT, WE BECAME A VICTIM WHO HAD TO DECIDE EITHER PAYING ADDITIONAL $4,670+TAX FOR THE REPAIR OR LETTING THE CAR ($4500 VALUE BEFORE THE SERVICE) TOWED TO A JUNK YARD. ASSUMING A DESIGN FATIGUE LIFE OF A CRANKSHAFT IS 150,000 MILE, THE PROBABILITY OF THE EVENT OCCURS AT 75,000 MILES WITHIN 50 MILES DRIVING IS LESS THAN 0.1%. WITHOUT THE SERVICE, WE MIGHT STILL DRIVE THE CAR SMOOTHLY. ON THE NISSAN USA SIDE, THEY WERE AWARE THAT THE CRANKSHAFT WAS TOO SMALL SO THEY INCREASED THE DIAMETER IN 1996 MODELS. WHY DIDN'T THEY WARN THE FIRST OWNERS SO THAT I COULD HAVE A CHOICE TO EITHER TRADE IN THE CAR OR LET THE CAR NATURALLY DIE WITHOUT SPENDING ADDITIONAL MONEY FOR NEW TIRES (3 WEEKS AGO) AND THE ENGINE SERVICE? THE OTHER FAULTY CRANKSHAFT CASES CAN BE FOUND AT HTTP://TOWNHALL-TALK.EDMUNDS.COM/DIRECT/VIEW/.EE93B52/1938 HTTP://WWW1.EPINIONS.COM/AUTO-REVIEW-CCC-AD8A28C-396533D0-PROD2. *TR
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-04-15
- VIN: 4N2DN11W5SD
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: (THIS IS MY SECOND COMPLAINT LODGED ON THIS SITE REGARDING THE SAME ISSUE. SEE MY EARLIER COMPLAINT FOR ADDITIONAL DETAILS ON THE POSSIBLE CAUSES.) THIS IS THE FIFTH/5TH TIME THE FRONT-PASSENGER-SIDE LAP BELT RETRACTOR (MOUNTED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR POST / BODY FRAME) HAS JAMMED OVER THE LAST 5-6 YEARS OR SO. THE REPLACED PART IS WORKING FOR SHORTER AND SHORTER PERIODS BEFORE ANOTHER FAILURE. COULD THIS BE DUE TO AGING OF THE STOCK OF REPLACEMENT PARTS? SEE NISSAN DEALERS RECORDS FOR EXACT DATES: FALHABER NISSAN, INC. 8680 COLERAIN AVE. CINCINNATI (GROSBECK), OH 45251 (513) 385-1400 (SALES, SERVICE, BODY SHOP). IT WILL NOT EXTEND MORE THAN ABOUT 8-12 INCHES BEFORE THE RATCHET MECHANISM "CATCHES" AND PREVENTS THE SEAT BELT FROM REACHING OVER TO THE BUCKLE BY THE CENTER CONSOLE. ON THE SURFACE THERE SEEMS TO BE NOTHING UNUSUAL ABOUT THE INSTALLATION -- THE UNIT IS BOLTED IN, AND THE BELT SIMPLY FEEDS THROUGH A SLOT IN THE TRIM PLASTIC. IN FRUSTRATION I DISCOVERED I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO EXTEND A FEW TIMES MORE BY VERY RAPIDLY SNATCHING THE BELT UNTIL IT WOULD CATCH, I SUPPOSE SIMULATING THE DECELERATION OF THE VEHICLE DURING AN ACCIDENT (AND THE ACCELERATION OF THE SPRING WINDING MECHANISM TRYING TO RESTRAIN A "BODY" FROM FLYING THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD). THEN AFTER RETRACTING FULLY THE BELT WOULD THEN EXTEND FULLY FOR A ONE-TIME USE, BUT ONLY TO SEIZE UP AGAIN AFTER RETRACTING. BUT THIS WORKED FOR ONLY A VERY BRIEF PERIOD (COUPLE OF DAYS) THEN EVEN THAT WOULD NOT WORK. FROM MY OWN EXPERIENCE I SUSPECT THIS PROBLEM IS MORE PREVALENT THAN THE FEW RECORDS ON THIS WEB SITE WOULD INDICATE. I SUSPECT THE ENGINEERS AT THE FACTORY ARE NOT GETTING THE FEEDBACK THEY NEED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM FROM THE DEALERSHIPS THAT (I PRESUME) ARE REIMBURSED BY NISSAN FOR REPEATEDLY PERFORMING THIS FREE-TO-THE-CONSUMER SERVICE. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-11-19
- VIN: 4N2DN11W4SD
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: THE NISSAN QUEST VAN HAD A STRUCTURAL FAILURE OF THE CRANKSHAFT. I FOUND THAT NISSAN BEGAN BUILDING MOTORS WITH 23 MM CRANKSHAFT IN 1993, BUT CHANGED TO 25 MM CRANKSHAFT IN 1996 DUE TO THE LACK OF STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SMALLER PART. I HAD TO REPLACE THE MOTOR AT A COST OF $3400. I FELT THAT SINCE THE ORIGINAL PART WAS DEFECTIVE THEY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF REPAIRS. I HAVE THE DEFECTIVE PART. *AK

FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-11-05
- VIN: 4N2DN11W2SD
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER
- Summary: I HAVE A 1995 NISSAN QUEST VEHICLE THAT HAD A SAFETY RECALL FOR A CRACKED FUEL TANK VENT HOSE THAT COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE A FIRE. THE RECALL WORK WAS PERFORMED IN JUNE 2001 WITH THE RECALL NOTICE STATING THAT THE HOSE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED TO PREVENT THE HOSE FROM CRACKING AND CAUSING A FUEL LEAK. ON NOV. 5TH 2004, MY VEHICLE FAILED IT'S ANNUAL STATE EMISSIONS TEST, WITH THE REPORT SAYING THAT I HAD A FUEL SYSTEM LEAK. THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP DISCOVERED THE FUEL TANK VENT HOSE CRACKED AND LEAKING AND CHARGED ME $170 TO REPLACE IT. I PROTESTED THE CHARGE BECAUSE THE RECALL WORK WAS SUPPOSED TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. THIS SAFETY RECALL IS NOT EFFECTIVE. NISSAN TOLD ME THAT THE RECALL WORK IS ONLY WARRANTED FOR 1 YEAR. MY CONTENTION IS THAT THE RECALL SHOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS FROM HAPPENING AND THE LATEST WORK SHOULD BE COVERED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR NISSAN WOULD AGREE TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE EXPENSE. SINCE THE HOSE SHOULD NOT HAVE CRACKED AGAIN, I WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE EXPENSE. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE RECALL WORK WAS NOT EFFECTIVE.*AK
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-06-16
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: I BOUGHT A 1995 NISSAN QUEST VAN WITH 30,000 MILES ON IT ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO(1999-2000). MY COMPLAINT IS THAT EVERY WINTER ON VERY COLD DAYS, WHEN WE TURN THE HEAT ON IN THE MORNINGS YOU CAN SMELL A VERY BAD RAW GAS SMELL. AFTER THE ENGINE WARMS UP IT WILL USUALLY GO AWAY BUT NOT ALWAYS AND SOMETIMES WHEN YOU COME TO A STOP IT WILL START AGAIN. I AM TALKING ABOUT A VERY STRONG GAS SMELL, NOT JUST A LITTLE BIT. IT IS ENOUGH THAT SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE IT'S SO BAD. SOMETIMES WE ROLL THE WINDOWS DOWN, WHICH IS NOT VERY COMFORTABLE SEEING THAT IT USUALLY HAPPENS ON THE COLDEST DAYS. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO A LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP 2 OR 3 TIMES AND THEY HAVE FIXED ALL THE RECALLS AND BULLETINS PUT OUT BY NISSAN ON PROBLEMS RELATED TO THIS. THESE NEVER WORKED. I ALSO TOOK IT TO ANOTHER AUTO REPAIR SHOP 3 TIMES TO HAVE IT FIXED. NOTHING HAS WORKED TO THIS POINT. THIS IS A LITTLE UNSETTLING THAT THE MANUFACTURER OF THE VEHICLE CANNOT EVEN FIND THE PROBLEM AND I CAN'T KEEP POURING MONEY INTO THIS VEHICLE AND NOT SEEING ANY RESULTS. NOR DO I FEEL COMFORTABLE ABOUT MY FAMILY RIDING AROUND IN THIS VEHICLE.*AK

1995 Nissan Quest recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 1995 Nissan Quest.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINIVANS. THE FUEL TANK VENT HOSE ALLOWS AIR TO VENT FROM THE FUEL TANK DURING REFUELING. CRACKS HAVE DEVELOPED IN THE VENT HOSE. IF (1) THE FUEL TANK IS OVERFILLED, NOT ALLOWING EXCESS FUEL IN THE VENT HOSE TO FLOW BACK INTO THE TANK, (2) THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN ONLY A SHORT DISTANCE AFTER REFUELING AND, (3) THERE IS SUBSEQUENTLY SIGNIFICANT HEATING OF THE FUEL TANK, THE FUEL IN THE TANK CAN EXPAND INTO THE VENT HOSE AND LEAK FUEL.
- Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE VENT HOSE.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TAIL LIGHTS
- Summary: THE REAR LAMP SOCKET MAY NOT ILLUMINATE BECAUSE THE METAL CAN IN THE LAMP SOCKET MOVES OR SEPARATES FROM THE PLASTIC SOCKET HOUSING.
- Consequence: THIS CAN RESULT IN MALFUNCTION OF THE STOP OR REAR RUNNING LAMPS. CENTER HIGH MOUNT STOP LAMP FUNCTION IS UNAFFECTED. REAR LAMP MALFUNCTION CAN RESULT IN FOLLOWING DRIVERS NOT BEING ALERTED TO THE SUBJECT VEHICLE'S PRESENCE OR INTENDED ACTIONS, PARTICULARLY IN THE CASE IN WHICH BOTH LAMPS HAVE MALFUNCTIONED.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REVISED REAR LAMP SOCKET AND WIRING ASSEMBLIES.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: AN OUT-OF-SPECIFICATION CONDITION IN THE SEAT CABLE ROLLER PULLEY ASSEMBLY CAN ALLOW THE CABLE THAT CONNECTS THE SEAT ADJUST LEVER TO THE LATCH TO BE PINCHED IN THE ROLLER ASSEMBLY.
- Consequence: CONSEQUENCE OF NON-COMPLIANCE: THIS CONDITION CAN PREVENT THE LATCH ON THE LEFT SIDE FROM FULLY ENGAGING THE SEAT RAIL. THIS DOES NOT COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENT OF FMVSS NO. 207, "SEATING SYSTEMS."
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PULLER ASSEMBLY IN THE THIRD ROW SLIDING BENCH SEAT LATCH ASSEMBLY.

Hi there! I've been driving this van for about 2 months now. It had 191,000kms on it (146,923mi) when I bought it from my neighbour at 180,000 (138,461mi). He bought it new with only 2kms (1.5mi) on it and he never had any major problems with it. I just wanted to let you know that there was a recall on the motors for '95 Quests at 120,000kms (92,307mi). Recently, we had to replace the tires and we were up in Mindon, Ontario when the fuel pump blew. So, in the past 2 months, we've had the tires and fuel pump replaced. Thanks for listening!

This has been a great dependable vehicle. You've taken good care of it with regular oil changes, tune-ups, and maintenance. You couldn't ask for a better vehicle. It's great to hear that you plan to keep it for quite a while, especially since it only has 66,000 miles on it!

I really appreciate this van. It's amazing that we've driven almost 200,000 miles and only had one major repair, which was fortunately covered under warranty. The engine is still running strong, the exterior paint still looks great, and it still rides smoothly even after all these miles, many of which were on backroads and in the mountains.

My husband and I purchased this van about 2 years ago when our son was born. At the time, we owned a Buick Century but quickly realized that we needed a larger vehicle to accommodate our son and 4 dogs. We bought it with 115k miles on it and it now has close to 136k miles. We had to replace the tires, sway bar end links, and speed sensor, but that was due to poor maintenance from the previous owner. I absolutely adore my van and if I could afford a new one, I would buy it in a heartbeat. It has been an extremely reliable vehicle and I consider it my baby.

We've had this minivan for 7 years and 125,000 miles, and it's still going strong! Unlike our friend's Chrysler Town and Country, which started rattling at 40,000 miles, our minivan has no rattles and handles and brakes well. The ride is good, but it could use a bit more power. We've only had a few issues with it, such as the air conditioning and motorized seat belt on the passenger side failing, as well as having to replace a radiator. Other than that, everything runs like new. However, as our kids have grown up, we need more room, and that's where GM minivans come in - they have substantially more leg room. Thank you for considering our experience with this minivan!
