1999 Nissan Quest problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Quest is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Nissan for model years 1993–2017 over four generations.

The first two generations (internally designated V40 and V41) of the Quest were short-wheelbase models co-developed and manufactured with Ford, aside its badge engineered Mercury Villager. For model year 2004 and the third generation (V42), Nissan ended its joint venture with Ford, manufacturing the Quest on its own. For model year 2011, the fourth generation (RE52) became a widened variant of the Nissan Elgrand minivan and was now manufactured in Japan. For the preceding generations, the Quest loosely shared its chassis and powertrain with the Nissan Maxima.

Following the decline of minivan sales in North America, Nissan ended sales of the Quest after the 2017 model year.

Common 1999 Nissan Quest problems

The Nissan Quest, produced from 1993 to 2017, is a popular minivan with its share of problems. Transmission issues are the most common and considered the worst by many drivers. The Quest can develop various problems like hesitation when shifting gears, rough transitions during a shift, abrupt deceleration, reduced acceleration, and transmission failure.

Another common problem is engine noises, particularly rattling noises, which are often caused by worn-out timing chains, timing chain guides, or timing chain tensioners. These unpleasant noises can potentially damage the engine, and many units belonging to the 2004, 2006, and 2007 model years are particularly prone to engine noises.

Brake problems are also a concern for some Nissan Quest drivers. While the brakes are generally reliable, some brake problems can show up fairly often in certain model years. For instance, the 2004 Nissan Quest has a high number of recorded complaints related to general brake problems.

The 2007 Nissan Quest is considered the worst model year due to a higher number of complaints, more severe problems, and higher repair costs. The most-reported problem for the 2007 Quest is transmission jerking while driving, with an average cost to fix of $2,300 and an average mileage of 104,000 mi.

In summary, transmission issues, engine noises, and brake problems are common problems in the Nissan Quest, with the 2007 model year being the worst due to a higher number of complaints, more severe problems, and higher repair costs.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-10-23
  • VIN: 4N2XN11T7XD
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 1999 NISSAN QUEST ON THE INTERSTATE THE FIRST TIME THE DRIVER FRONT BRAKE LOCKED UP. SHE DROVE THE VEHICLE TO STONES RIVER NISSAN OF MURFREESBORO, TN WHERE THEY REPLACED THE BRAKE CALIPERS, HOSES, ROTORS, AND PADS. THE BRAKE PADS WORE OUT AFTER ONLY 8K MILES. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DIFFERENT SHOP TO HAVE A TIRE REPAIRED AND THE PADS REPLACED AND THE DRIVER'S FRONT LOCKED UP AGAIN ON THE TECHNICIAN WHILE ROAD TESTING HIS REPAIR. THIS SHOP INSISTED ON REPLACING THE DRIVER FRONT BRAKE HOSE DESPITE KNOWING IT WAS RELATIVELY NEW. THIS DID NOT WORK & THEY REPLACED THE BRAKE CALIPER (AGAIN) AND GAVE UP AFTER IT LOCKED UP YET AGAIN. THEY TOWED IT TO SR NISSAN, WHO DIAGNOSED A BAD MASTER CYLINDER & REPLACED IT. DRIVER FRONT BRAKE STILL LOCKED UP AT THE SHOP, NOW DIAGNOSING BAD ABS ACTUATOR THEY SAY WAS CAUSED BY THE SEALS INSIDE THE MC DETERIORATING. MY OPINION IS THAT THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT, IF PARTICULATES FROM A MC CAN FLOAT AND CLOG AN ABS ACTUATOR TO THE POINT THAT LOCKUP OF AN INDIVIDUAL BRAKE OCCURS. ABS IS SUPPOSED TO PREVENT LOCKUP, NOT CAUSE IT. THE BRAKES ARE ACTUALLY FORD DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION. I KNOW SOMEONE WHO ALSO HAD A FORD EXPLORER AND THE PASSENGER FRONT BRAKE LOCKED UP ON HER INTERMITTENTLY LIKE MY WIFE'S HAS. THE ABS ACTUATOR IS NOT AVAILABLE NEW ANYMORE, MY ONLY RECOURSE IS TO INSTALL A JUNK PART WHICH IS MOST LIKELY DEFECTIVE. I THINK BOTH COMPANIES NEED TO BE INVESTIGATED AND I THINK NISSAN SHOULD HAVE TO FIND A NEW PART AND PAY FOR INSTALLATION COSTS. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-03-19
  • VIN: 4N2XN11T0XD
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 NISSAN QUEST. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THE ENGINE SHUT OFF. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE; HOWEVER, IT SHUT OFF AGAIN AND WAS TOWED TO A MECHANIC. TWENTY MINUTES AFTER THE ENGINE SHUT OFF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. FOUR MECHANICS HAVE DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP WAS BLOWN AND CAUSED BY THE IGNITION. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED WITH A BLACK BOX ON THE RIGHT SIDE UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL. THE BLACK BOX ALLOWED THE DEALER TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF IF THE PAYMENTS WERE NOT MADE. A MECHANIC ALSO STATED THAT THE BLACK BOX SHOULD BE CHECKED AND COULD ALSO HAVE CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE DEALERS MECHANIC QUOTED HER $1,000 TO REPLACE THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND ORDERED THE PART FOR A HIGHER PRICE THAN QUOTED WITHOUT HER APPROVAL. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 155,000.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-08-10
  • VIN: 4N2XN11T3XD
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: IN MAY 1999, NISSAN CORP SOLD ME DEFECTIVE NISSAN QUEST. EVERY 2-3 YEARS THIS VEHICLE DEVELOPS EXCESSIVE CARBONOUS DEPOSITS IN THE PART OF THE ENGINE CALLED THE THROTTLE-BODY ASSEMBLY. THESE DEPOSITS CAUSE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO REQUIRE INCREASED EFFORT TO PUSH THE PEDAL ACCELERATOR DOWN (STICKY PEDAL). BEING THE ONLY OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE, I ALREADY HAD TO CLEAN THE THROTTLE-BODY 3 TIMES. THIS DEFECT WAS RECOGNIZED AND SETTLED BY NISSAN CORP IN CLASS ACTION IN 2003, PLEASE SEE THE COPY OF THE FIRST PAGE OF SETTLEMENT LETTER ENCLOSED. MY DEALERSHIP, ROTHROCK, IN ALLENTOWN PA CLEANED THE THROTTLE FOR THE LAST, 3RD TIME IN DECEMBER 2003 AT NO CHARGE, PLEASE SEE THE COPY OF INVOICE ENCLOSED. THE THROTTLE NEEDS TO BE CLEANED AGAIN. MY LATEST DISCUSSION WITH NISSAN REP, ERICA, 1-800-647-7261 EXT 57741, FILE N 5812745 WAS ON 8/10/07. NISSAN REFUSES TO CLEAN AT NISSAN'S EXPENSE EXPLAINING THAT A DIAGNOSIS MUST BE PERFORMED FIRST FOR $70.00 PER HOUR. I CONSIDER THIS NISSAN?S OFFER AS A DECEPTIVE WAY TO AVOID THE RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX THE NISSAN'S DEFECT AT NO CHARGE TO ME. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-03-01
  • VIN: 4N2XN11T1XD
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: THE GAS PEDAL ON MY 1999 NISSAN QUEST STICKS QUITE OFTEN, SUCH THAT YOU MUST JAM YOUR FOOT ONTO THE PEDAL TO DEPRESS IT. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AS WHEN YOU DO JAM THE PEDAL THE CAR MUST ACCELERATE QUICKLY INTO TRAFFIC. MY MECHANIC LOOKED AT THE PEDAL AND COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEM WITH IT, SINCE IT WOULDN'T STICK WHEN HE WAS TESTING IT. HOWEVER, IT DOES GET STUCK VERY OFTEN. I'VE SEEN POSTINGS ON THE WEB FROM OTHERS WHO ALSO STATE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. I WOULD LIKE TO JOIN THE GROWING LIST OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS TROUBLE IN CASE THERE IS A MAJOR ISSUE (I.E., DEATHS ON THE ROADWAY) RESULTING WHICH CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO BE RECALLED.* JB

Negative 1999 Nissan Quest car reviews

Hi Nissan, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share some feedback with you regarding my experience with your minivan. While I have owned and loved many Nissan cars in the past, I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with this particular model. I believe that with some upgrades, it could be just as excellent as your other vehicles. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my thoughts.

  2. Willy Goldner 2024-10-15

It seems like the engine is not performing as well as it could be. Despite the dealership's efforts, it still sounds quite rough and can be a bit jerky when accelerating. Additionally, it seems to consume more fuel than expected. We understand how frustrating this can be and we would like to help you find a solution.

Positive 1999 Nissan Quest car reviews

  1. Abelardo Fisher 2024-10-08

It's great to hear that you're interested in this vehicle! It's fuel efficient, has great quality, and runs very smoothly compared to the Plymouth Voyager. Additionally, it's very comfortable and versatile - you can fold down the back seats to transport larger items, or even remove them entirely.

  2. Soledad Wolff 2024-08-22

Nissan makes a great van! This is actually my second Quest. It has tons of room, drives great, and looks good. I do have one complaint though, the brakes. Unfortunately, they needed to be completely redone in less than a year. But overall, I'm still impressed with the vehicle. It's not cheap, as I lease it, but you definitely get what you pay for!

  3. Chester Gerlach 2024-06-08

I was hesitant about becoming a 'minivan mom', but I absolutely love my van! It's perfect for long trips as the kids can watch movies and there's plenty of space to keep them from getting too close to each other. I managed to buy it at a great price, which made me wonder if there were any issues with it, but over a year later, all I've had to do is fill it with gas and change the oil. It's a very reliable and comfortable vehicle, even for my family of six!

  4. Esteban Howell 2024-05-16

I had a great experience with my Nissan van. It was very comfortable and reliable, and I enjoyed being one of the first to drive the 99 SE Quest as a first year model. Although I did experience some issues, they were to be expected with a new model, and the Nissan dealers were fantastic at resolving them. In fact, I was so pleased with my experience that I recently turned in my 99 SE Quest lease (Convenience & Leather package) for a 2002 SE Quest lease (Comfort/Convience, Auto Diming mirror and Protection Package). I'm excited to see how this one performs and will be sure to report back!

  5. Jeffrey Mitchell 2024-05-11

I have a GLE van with all the bells and whistles, including a sunroof. I love how it drives like a car, unlike other vans we tried that felt like trucks. The handling is great and we've had very few problems thanks to regular maintenance. We recently had to replace the radiator and will soon need to replace the cv boots and struts, which is normal for a vehicle with 120k miles. It's a wonderful car for families and the kids love the TV. I usually keep the back seat pushed up against the middle row, but it's easy to push it back when I have extra passengers. The car has lots of vroom vroom.
