1997 Nissan Quest problems
The Nissan Quest is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Nissan for model years 1993–2017 over four generations.
The first two generations (internally designated V40 and V41) of the Quest were short-wheelbase models co-developed and manufactured with Ford, aside its badge engineered Mercury Villager. For model year 2004 and the third generation (V42), Nissan ended its joint venture with Ford, manufacturing the Quest on its own. For model year 2011, the fourth generation (RE52) became a widened variant of the Nissan Elgrand minivan and was now manufactured in Japan. For the preceding generations, the Quest loosely shared its chassis and powertrain with the Nissan Maxima.
Following the decline of minivan sales in North America, Nissan ended sales of the Quest after the 2017 model year.

Common 1997 Nissan Quest problems
The 1997 Nissan Quest, while considered reliable overall, has been reported to have some common problems by its owners. The most frequently reported issue is related to the transmission. The transmission in the 1997 Nissan Quest has been known to slip or fail, causing the vehicle to lose power or even become inoperable. This issue can be costly to repair and may require a complete replacement of the transmission.
Another common problem reported by owners of the 1997 Nissan Quest is related to the starter. Some owners have reported that their vehicle will not start, even after disconnecting the battery and resetting the solenoid. This issue can be caused by a faulty starter motor or a problem with the electrical system.
Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the fuel system, including problems with the fuel pump and fuel injectors. These issues can cause the engine to run poorly or not start at all.
The 1997 Nissan Quest has also been reported to have issues with the brakes, including problems with the brake pads and rotors. These issues can cause the vehicle to have reduced stopping power and can be dangerous if not addressed promptly.
Lastly, some owners have reported issues with the electrical system, including problems with the alternator and battery. These issues can cause the vehicle to have difficulty starting or running, and can also cause the lights and other electrical components to malfunction.
It is important to note that not all 1997 Nissan Quest owners have reported these issues, and some have reported that their vehicle has been very reliable. However, it is important to be aware of these common problems and to have the vehicle inspected regularly to ensure that any issues are caught and addressed before they become major repairs.

I CONTACTED DEALERS IN MY AREA AND WAS TOLD THE REPAIR WAS DONE IN ONE OF THE DEALERS BUT THEY NEVER WANTED TO PROVIDED ANYTHING IN WRITING THAT SHOWS THE REPAIR. COURTESY NISSAN IN TAMPA FLORIDA WAS TERRIBLE AND DIDN'T WANT TO HELP, I CONTACTED NISSAN AT THE 1800 NUMBER AND THIS GUY CHRIS AT EXTENSION 8443 TOLD ME I WAS GOING TO RECEIVE A LETTER SHOWING THE REPAIR BUT I WAITED TWO WEEKS AND NEVER RECEIVED NOTHING, WHEN I CALLED HIM BACK HE NEVER RESPONDED TO MY CALLS AND I SPOKE WITH TAMMY AT EXTENSION 3879 AND SAID WHAT CHRIS TOLD ME WAS A LIE I AM VERY TIRED OF THIS COMPANY LYING TO ME EVERYTIME I CALL ,I JUST WANTED THIS PEOPLE TO BE INVESTIGATED, THEY HAVE A TERRIBLE SERVICE AT THE 1800 NUMBER AND I FEEL LIKE ME AND MY KIDS ARE TRAVELING IN A DANGEROUS VAN, I WON'T RECOMMEND ANYBODY TO BUY NISSAN QUEST OR DEALING WITH NISSAN COURTESY AT TAMPA OR THE 1800 NISSAN NUMBER, I WISH SOMEBODY CAN INVESTIGATE THESE PEOPLE AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, BECAUSE I DON'T THINK IS FAIR TO BUY A CAR WITH A DANGEROUS RECALL AND THEY DON'T EVEN WANT TO PROVIDE INFORMATION IF IT WAS FIXED OR NOT OR AT LEAST HAVE IT CHECK. I WON'T BUY A NISSAN EVER IN MY LIFE, TERRIBLE COMPANY.*JB
SEAT BELTS,CHILD SEAT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-03-14
- Components: SEAT BELTS,CHILD SEAT
- Summary: MY SON RECENTLY GRADUATED TO A BOOSTER SEAT. I PURCHASED COSCO TRAVELER HIGH BACK BOOSTER. MY SON FITS ALL OF THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THIS BOOSTER SEAT. I INSTALLED IT PROPERLY. MY SON WAS IN THE BOOSTER SEAT. AS I WAS DRIVING ALONG THE FREEWAY MY SON DROPPED HIS BOOK ON THE FLOOR. HE LEANED FORWARD TO PICK IT UP FROM THE FLOOR AND THE ARM OF THE BOOSTER SEAT CAUSED THE SEAT BELT BUTTON ON THE LATCH TO DEPRESS, WHICH THUS UNBUCKLED THE SEAT BELT AND CAUSED MY SON TO FALL OUT OF HIS SEAT WHILE REACHING FOR HIS BOOT. THE SEAT BELT UNBUCKLES EVERY SINGLE TIME MY SON LEANS FORWARD AT ALL DUE TO THE "ARM" OF THE BOOSTER SEAT. IT IS MY OPINION THAT IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, THE FORCE OF HIS BODY WEIGHT AGAINST THE SEAT BELT WOULD CAUSE THE SEAT BELT TO UNBUCKLE. THUS THE RESTRAINT WOULD NOT BE RESTRAINING HIM. *NM
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-05-30
- VIN: JN8AR05Y6VW
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: BOUGHT A 97 NISSAN PATHFINDER IN SEPT. 03...SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE ENGINE LIGHT HAS SINCE HAD A MIND OF ITS OWN, TURNING ON AND OFF DEPENDING ON THE CLIMATE OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. I RECENTLY LEARNED THAT IT IS THE EVAP VENT CONTROL VALVE AND O RING WHICH NEED TO BE REPLACED. I HAD TAKEN THE CAR INTO 3 DEALERSHIPS ON THE EAST COAST WHERE I WAS TOLD NUMEROUS OTHER ISSUES WERE CAUSING THE LIGHT. I HAVE PUT $4500 WORTH OF WORK INTO THE VEHICLE ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS A $122 PART THAT SUPPOSEDLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE SPOKEN TO OTHER NISSAN OWNERS (MANY WITH OTHER NISSAN VEHICLES-NOT PATHFINDERS) AND THEY TOO HAVE HAD THIS SAME EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR VEHICLE. THE PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE THROUGH ANYBODY EXCEPT THE NISSAN DEALERSHIPS WHICH MEANS THERE IS NO WAY TO GET A COMPETATIVE PRICE. IN ORDER TO GET THE LIGHT TO SHUT OFF ONCE MY MECHANIC HAS REPLACED THE PARTS I WILL THEN BE FORCED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO PAY THEM TO SHUT IT OFF. I WAS INFORMED BY THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT THIS PROBLEM WOULD NOT EFFECT THE DRIVABILITY OF THE VEHICLE THAT IT WAS AN EMISSIONS SITUATION. ULTIMATELY, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS EMISSIONS INSPECTIONS NOR WILL IT GET DECENT GAS MILEAGE UNTIL THIS PART IS REPLACED.

THEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO ANOTHER SHOP AND THEY FOUND THE PROBLEM. THEN THEY CALLED NISSAN AND WAS TOLD THAT I HAD TO REPLACE THE LONG AND SHORT ROCKER ARMS FOR MY REAR SUSPENSION AND THAT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THAT THIS PROBLEM IS PRETTY DRASTIC CONSIDERING I HAVE ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF MY TRUCK ON HIGHWAY ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. I CHECKED FOR A RECALL MY MY VEHICLE AND DIDN'T HAVE ANY LUCK. SMOKE STARTED COMING OUT OF THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY. PULL OVER ON THE SIDE THE ROAD AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. RAN UP TO THE GUARD GATE AND OBTAINED A FIRE EXTERISHER. TURNED TO THE CAR AND SAW A TWO TO FOUR INCH FLAME COMING OUT OF THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY. I PUT OUT THE FIRE. CHECKED THE FUSE BLOCK FOR A BLOWN FUSE AND THERE WAS NONE. THE FUSE DID NOT BLOW FOR THE AUTOMATIC WINDOW CIRCUIT. PULLED SWITCH ASSEMBLY AND DISCONNECTED THE WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR. PLANNING ON REPLACING THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY AND SIDE PANEL.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2001-11-01
- VIN: 4N2DN1119VD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN THIS VAN. VARIOUS LIGHTS WILL COME ON WHEN I TURN ON THE OPERATING LIGHTS AT NIGHT, BUT SOME WILL RANDOMLY NOT WORK. FOR EXAMPLE, THE LIGHTS ON THE HEATER WILL SOMETIMES COME ON IF I PUSH BUTTONS UP AND DOWN THE PANEL, OR TURN THE FAN OFF AND ON. SOMETIMES I CAN GET THE LIGHTS ON THE AM/FM CASSETTE TO COME ON IF I PUSH VARIOUS BUTTONS FOR THE RADIO STATIONS. THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD HAVE GONE OUT COMPLETELY BY DEGREES. I CURRENTLY HAVE A DARK DASHBOARD. THESE PROBLEMS STARTED HAPPENING THE DAY I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE USED, AND I TOOK IT BACK TO SOMERSWORTH NISSAN (IN SOMERSWORTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE) WHERE I BOUGHT IT. BUT FIRST THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT GET THE PROBLEM TO HAPPEN, SO I TOOK IT BACK EXACTLY WHEN IT WAS HAPPENING ONCE, AND THAT TIME THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT FIX THE PROBLEMS, THAT IT MUST BE ELECTRICAL AND WOULD COST ME A LOT OF MONEY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG AND FIX IT. THIS DEALERSHIP ALSO FORCED ME TO PURCHASING A ONE YEAR WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE, AND WHEN I TRIED TO CANCEL THE WARRANTY WITHIN THE TIME THE CONTRACT ALLOWED, THEY REFUSED TO ALLOW ME TO CANCEL IT, AND SAID, SO SUE US!. THEY KNEW I WAS A SINGLE MOM, WHO WAS TRYING TO FIND A CAR THAT WOULD ACCOMMODATE MY SIX CHILDREN, AND THEY KNEW I COULD NOT AFFORD TO TAKE THEM TO COURT. SINCE PURCHASING THIS CAR THREE YEARS AGO FROM SOMERSWORTH NISSAN IN SOMERSWORTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE, I HAVE BEEN MADE AWARE OF MANY ILLEGAL AND DIRTY BUSINESS DEALINGS WITH OTHERS.*AK

- VIN: 4N2DN1115VD

- Summary: I JUST WANTED TO STATE THAT I HAVE IDENTIFIED WITH MOST OF THE FAILURE PROBLEMS THAT ARE LISTED ON THE COMPLAINT PAGE. THE RIGHT REAR SEAT BELT HAS FAILED, IT WILL NOT PULLOUT OR RETRACT, AND NO ONE CAUSE THIS PROBLEM, IT IS A MALFUNCTION OF THE SAET BELT. THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT FUEL ODOR IN THE VAN FROM TIME TO TIME, NO PARTICULAR TIME NOTED. THE SLIDING DOOR DOES NOT LOCK AND UNLOCK PROPERLY, AND IT WILL LOCK BY ITSELF AND STICK, ALSO IT WILL NOT STAY IN THE OPEN POSITION CONSISTANTLY.MY BRAKE PADS ARE GOING OUT, IT MAY JUST BE NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR, BUT THEY SEEMED TO GO OUT ALL OF A SUDDEN. TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-03-15
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: HAVE A SET OF REGATTA II, 215SR75. @25,000 - 30,000 MILES ON TIRES. EXPERIENCED SHIMMYING AT LOW SPEEDS AND VIBRATION AT HIGH SPEEDS. CHECK INFLATION FREQUENTLY AND PUT AIR IN WHEN NECESSARY. HAD A PASSENGER SIDE REAR TIRE BLOW OUT RECENTLY. APPEARED AS IF SIDE WALLS HAD BURST. NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT IN ALL MY LIFE. (SIDE NOTE: HAD RECENTLY HAD BRAKE PADS REPLACED, THE TIRE IN QUESTION WAS ON THE FRONT, MECHANIC DISCOVERED TIRE TO BE SERIOUSLY OUT OF BALANCE AND HAD DIFFICULT TIME TRYING TO BALANCE IT, WHICH IS WHY HE PUT IT ON THE REAR) AFTER TIRE BLEW OUT THE TIRE DEALER SAID SIDE WALLS WERE PROBABLY WEAKENED BY UNDERINFLATION MOST LIKELY CAUSED BY A SLOW LEAK. THIS EXPLANATION IS INADEQUATE. HE REPLACED THE TIRE AT FULL PRICE MINUS $11.00 AND SAID IT WAS NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE AS THE WARRANTY ONLY COVERED TREAD WEAR. AFTER REPLACING THE TIRE THE VEHICLE (NISSAN QUEST MINIVAN) STILL SHIMMIES AT LOW SPEED AND VIBRATES AT HIGH SPEED. MY CONCERNS ARE: 1. ARE THE THREE REMAINING ORIGINAL REGATTA II TIRES IN IMMENENT DANGER OF EXPLODING LIKE THE OTHER ONE? 2.CONSIDERING THE DIFFICULTY BALANCING THE ONE TIRE THAT BLEW, WAS THAT TIRE DEFECTIVE? 3. COULD THE SAME PROBLEM BE OCCURING IN MY OTHER 3 TIRES CREATING A SERIOUS, DANGEROUS SITATION? *AK

I have successfully resolved several issues with my Quest. The flex pipe was replaced for $360 at Speedy Muffler, which significantly reduced the exhaust noise. Additionally, I improved the smoothness of the transmission by changing the fluid and filter. The air bag light came on one day, but the local Nissan dealer, Doner Nissan in Newmarket, Ontario, cleared the codes for free and suggested that it may have been caused by a low battery. Overall, I am confident in the quality of my Quest and the expertise of the professionals who have helped me resolve these issues.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing mini-van that I've been lucky enough to own. It has been an absolute pleasure to drive, with a smooth ride and great handling. Even after nearly 300,000 miles, it's still going strong with just regular oil changes and plug wires. Recently, we took it on a road trip from sunny Florida all the way to beautiful Seattle, passing through some incredible places like the South Dakota Badlands, Yellowstone National Park, and the Grand Teton mountain range. And you know what? It never let us down, not even once! It gets 25 miles on the highway and 22 around town, which is pretty impressive. I hope you have a chance to experience the joy of owning a car like this little gem. All the best, Roger J. from Fort Myers, Florida.

We bought the van used, with 84,00 miles already on it. Other than the wind noise edmunds mentions, we have had excellent service out of this van. It has great acceleration, fuel economy, and is quite comfortable on long trips. This particular van has the removable center row captain's chairs, which really makes a lot of room for cargo. Best used car I have ever owned.
-
Great minivan! It's been very reliable overall, but there were a few annoying things like the sticking buttons and switches, and the electrically intermittent rear wiper and side windows. The 3.0 6-cylinder engine is strong enough and provides decent gas mileage, while the transmission is also strong and can easily handle mountains. I never had any major issues with this van.
-
The day I saw my Nissan, I was so thrilled! It felt like I was bringing home my baby for the first time, and it truly was! It rides great, feels open and comfortable! Believe it or not, we still have our Nissan, and it still runs well (it's 10 years old) and looks good! I am selling it only to buy another Quest! When talking about selling our van, my 8-year-old starts to cry because this is the only vehicle he has ever ridden in, and he loves it. He gets one seat, and his sister gets the other. Everyone in our family has their place in this van! We love it!! It was truly a blessing from God when we got this van!

Bought it new in 97 and still have it. Although it has had its fair share of problems for 114k miles, I hope to sell it before the transmission sticks. Unfortunately, I would not buy another Nissan again due to excessive engine noise, bad electrical problems (once for rear AC, twice for EGR valves), poor brakes, and frequent tire wearout.
Charlie Rosenbaum 2024-10-19
The gas mileage could be better, with just 23 highway miles and 17 city miles per gallon. Additionally, the engine power may not be as strong as expected for the size of the van. I recently discovered a zooming noise, which I learned is a common problem with Nissan Quest's fuel pump. In the past, I owned a 4-cylinder Mazda that got 24 city and 36 highway miles per gallon. I bring this up because gas prices are currently quite high at $2.38 per gallon in NYC. Overall, it's a comfortable van, but there are some areas for improvement.
