2005 Nissan Quest problems

The Nissan Quest is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Nissan for model years 1993–2017 over four generations.
The first two generations (internally designated V40 and V41) of the Quest were short-wheelbase models co-developed and manufactured with Ford, aside its badge engineered Mercury Villager. For model year 2004 and the third generation (V42), Nissan ended its joint venture with Ford, manufacturing the Quest on its own. For model year 2011, the fourth generation (RE52) became a widened variant of the Nissan Elgrand minivan and was now manufactured in Japan. For the preceding generations, the Quest loosely shared its chassis and powertrain with the Nissan Maxima.
Following the decline of minivan sales in North America, Nissan ended sales of the Quest after the 2017 model year.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-04-04
- VIN: 5N1BV28U55N
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I'VE HAD THIS VEHICLE INTO MY LOCAL NISSAN DEALERS SERVICE CENTER MANY TIMES FOR A LOSS OF POWER. THEY HAD ME REPLACE THE ECU, WHICH HAD TO BE PROGRAMMED, THEN THEY SAID THAT IT WAS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS. I BOUGHT ALL THREE OF THOSE. AFTER THAT IT NEEDED TO BE PROGRAMMED FOR THE AIR/FUEL RATIO. STILL RAN THE SAME. I BROUGHT IT INTO A DIFFERENT SHOP, THEY SAID IT HAD A BAD THROTTLE. MY BROTHER HAD ONE I HAD PUT IN BUT STILL NO POWER, AND HESITATION AT ACCELERATION AND UP HILLS, AND MISFIRES AND BACKFIRES A LOT. ONE OF THE CODES THEY FOUND FOR ME WAS A TIMING ISSUE. MY BROTHER HAS SAME VAN TOLD ME HE HAD TO REPLACE THE TIMING CHAIN. I'VE HEARD A RATTLING AND WHINING NOISE FROM TIMING AREA, SO I LOOKED INTO THIS FURTHER. BACK IN 2004 NISSAN ISSUED A TSB REGARDING THIS ISSUE TELLING TECHNICIANS TO MAKE A "GOODWILL ADJUSTMENT" TO PUSH BACK REPAIRS OF THIS ISSUE UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE SINCE LEARNING ABOUT WHAT COULD HAPPEN SHOULD IT FAIL. I DRIVE MY CHILDREN IN THAT VAN AND BOUGHT IT BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A SAFE AND COMFORTABLE VEHICLE TO DRIVE. APPARENTLY NOT. NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS EVEN TOLD ME THAT THEY WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF REPAIRS. I CURRENTLY AWAIT TO HEAR FROM A SUPERVISOR TO GIVE THEM AN EARFUL AND TO FIND OUT THE REASONS WHY IT WILL NOT BE FIXED. THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL. IF CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO THIS HAPPENS ON THE HIGHWAY (WHICH WE TRAVEL ALMOST EVERY DAY), THIS WOULD LEAVE THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY CRIPPLED AND UNABLE TO STEER OUT OF THE WAY OF ANY DANGER. SOONER OR LATER SOMEONE IS GOING TO BE INJURED IF NOT KILLED IN A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT FROM THIS IF NOT ALREADY. IT'S A SHAME NISSAN DOESN'T SEE THE VALUE OF POTENTIALLY SAVING ITS CUSTOMERS LIVES VS. THE COST OF MAKING NECESSARY REPAIRS. IT SHOULD BE A RECALL. I'LL NEVER BUY A NISSAN AGAIN.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-05-15
- VIN: 5N1BV28U25N
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER

BASED ON RESEARCH A HUGE PERCENTAGE OF NISSAN QUEST, NISSAN MAXIMA AND NISSAN ALTIMA FROM 2005 HAVE THIS ISSUE, AND NO RECALLS WAS ISSUED NOR NISSAN DEALER ACCOUNTABLE FOR PROBLEM. PROBLEM HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY, HAD LACK OF POWER, MOVE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND STOP, PUT CAR IN PARK, TRIED REVERSE GEAR, AND WAS NOT WORKING, TRIED DRIVE GEAR AND IT MOVES FORWARD BUT WITH VERY LITTLE POWER. TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC AND AND AFTER SEVERAL INSPECTION HE TOLD ME I NEEDED TO CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-07-28
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GOES IN AND OUT MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO SEE SPEED, FUEL LEVEL, TEMP, TURNING SIGNALS, RPMS, AND EVERYTHING ELSE NECESSARY TO DRIVE SAFELY. SOMETIMES WHILE THE PANEL COMES BACK TO WORKING PROPERLY IT ENABLES THE OVERDRIVE CAUSING THE ENGINE TO JOLT WHILE DRIVING. DURING RESEARCH I FOUND THERE ARE TOO MANY COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER PEOPLE THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE AND DEALERS QUOTING THEM IN THE 700- THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO FIX, THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL AND A FREE REPAIR AS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND IT'S AFFECTING TOO MANY VEHICLES.

Hi there! We have been using an 05 Quest SE as a company car and have driven over 10,000 miles. We have found that most auto writer reviews are just plain wrong. The side doors and back are actually bigger than competitors, which is a great plus. We have been very impressed with the ride, handling, and feeling of safety in bad weather. The 3.5L engine is also great, and we have logged several tanks of fuel over 26mpg - the EPA highway figure! The average over the first 6,000 miles, including break-in and Winter driving, was 22.8, which is not bad at all. Additionally, the A/C works very effectively. Contrary to reviews, we have found that the second row seats do fold down with headrests in place. Lastly, we have had four different drivers operate this vehicle regularly and they all report that the center-mounted speedo takes 15 minutes to get used to. Thanks for reading!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the SE Quest that I purchased from Trophy Nissan in Mesquite Texas. I was able to get it for a great price of 32200 +TTL, well below Edmunds TMV price. I've had it for 2 months now and I must say, it's been performing really nicely! The power is definitely better than the Toyota Sienna and on par with the Honda Odyssey. The exterior and interior are truly stand out, and mine even has a sunroof and 4 fixed glass roof for the 2nd and 3rd row seats. There are also 2 video screens, lots of reading lights, cup holders, overhead storage, and the back seats are so comfortable that you feel like you're sitting in a 1st class row on an airplane. The interior space is huge, you can easily walk up and down the rows without having to step outside. Thanks for listening to my experience!

I bought my fully loaded 2005 Quest SE on 10/05/04, trading in my 2001 BMW 325i. Almost nine years later, the van has safely taken my family over 101,100 miles and counting. I've travelled across the USA and Canada, usually alone with my four daughters. I've only had two minor issues: a ground fault around 40,000 miles that delayed a trip home for a couple of hours, and a recent alternator failure that required almost 100 miles of towing and a rather costly repair bill. However, alternators do fail and the ground fault was a minor inconvenience. Overall, this van has been exceptional and I highly recommend it.

I've had my minivan for over a year now and I still absolutely love it! It's the 3.5 SE model with all the skylights, bells, and whistles. Mine is a sleek dark gray with a rouge and black interior. Last year, my family and I took it on a road trip from Massachusetts to Washington DC and then to South Carolina. With three kids and all the luggage we brought, there was plenty of room for everyone. The 2 DVD package and navigation system were definitely worth the investment!

I traded in my '01 Volvo V70 T5 wagon for the Quest because the Volvo's rear seats were cramped and it had a tendency to eat ignition coils. With two small children, I wanted a minivan that was comfortable and convenient, so I did a lot of research on used vans before deciding on the Quest. What drew me to it was the durability of the engine/transmission compared to any other minivan, except for the Toyota Sienna, which was more expensive. We've had the Quest for about 4 years now, and it's been a great van. Although the interior materials are admittedly cheap, the engine and transmission have been bulletproof, and the body has held together well. We've only had to replace an engine mount, front struts, and brake pads so far. Recently, it developed a small leak from the rear valve cover gasket, and the pixels on the odometer readout are starting to fade. I've decided not to fix the valve cover gasket since it would be a PITA, and the odometer can be fixed for about $12 with a how-to video on Youtube. It still drives nicely, the AC is ice cold, and everything works. All in all, it's holding up well, considering it's almost 12 years old and has over 160k miles on it. I plan to drive it until it reaches 200k or blows up, whichever comes first. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap, reliable family car or work vehicle.

I purchased this car last year with only 62,000 miles and all service records provided. At first, I thought I had lucked out, but unfortunately, the brakes squeaked constantly and even after the dealer attempted to fix them, the squeaking persisted. Additionally, the CD player broke within a month of purchase. When I went to open the rear gate, the trim that covers the latch came off in my hand, which seems to be a common issue with this model. While on vacation, the check engine light came on at around 78,000 miles. Upon returning home, I contacted Nissan and was informed that the converter was covered up to 80,000 miles. However, since I had taken the car to my local garage instead of a Nissan dealer, they would not honor the warranty. Overall, I have had a negative experience with this 2010 VW and will not be purchasing another Nissan in the future!

This car has had a lot of issues and I would not recommend it. It has required expensive and constant repairs, including replacing front and back shocks, sets of tires and brakes, instrument cluster, timing chain and tensioners, transmission, lower control arms, engine and transmission mounts, and a 65% chance of replacing corroded subframe depending on how frequently you use your AC. The sliding doors internals and power steering pressure hose have also needed attention. Please save yourself from this headache and avoid purchasing it.
Dameon Lowe 2025-09-17
The car has been experiencing multiple issues since it was purchased, including problems with the air conditioning, seats, radio, and transmission. Despite being out of warranty, these issues persist and are often difficult to diagnose due to their intermittent nature. The car even lost power while driving, which was a concerning experience. However, the issue was resolved on its own, only to reoccur the next day. It is clear that the car requires immediate attention and repair to ensure its reliability on the road.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with this van. While I've had some issues with it, I think it's important to note that it only has 93k on it. The catalytic converter broke and needed to be changed, which I think may have been caused by the van being too low. Additionally, the transmission has been acting up, which I've heard is a common issue. The doors can be a bit tricky to open, but with a little effort, they do open. The automatic trunk can be a bit finicky, but I've found that with a little tug, it opens just fine. There are some creaking noises and outside noises, but overall, it's not too bad. The blower motor did go out and the brakes needed to be replaced after 6 months, but that's to be expected with any vehicle. While I do have some regrets about buying this van, I think it's important to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! We purchased this van brand new and have taken great care of it over the past three years. Unfortunately, we've encountered a few issues along the way, including a digital dashboard display that hasn't been clear for some time, a non-functioning heater in the back, and now a failing transmission. We've invested around $5000 in repairs, and despite regular servicing, we're still experiencing problems. We're currently exploring our options for a new vehicle. We did consider taking it to the dealership, but the diagnostic fee of $98 is quite steep. Interestingly, we've heard from a transmission specialist that many others have experienced similar issues, and there may even be a class action lawsuit in the works. Thanks for your understanding!
