1994 Nissan Quest problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Quest is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Nissan for model years 1993–2017 over four generations.

The first two generations (internally designated V40 and V41) of the Quest were short-wheelbase models co-developed and manufactured with Ford, aside its badge engineered Mercury Villager. For model year 2004 and the third generation (V42), Nissan ended its joint venture with Ford, manufacturing the Quest on its own. For model year 2011, the fourth generation (RE52) became a widened variant of the Nissan Elgrand minivan and was now manufactured in Japan. For the preceding generations, the Quest loosely shared its chassis and powertrain with the Nissan Maxima.

Following the decline of minivan sales in North America, Nissan ended sales of the Quest after the 2017 model year.

Common 1994 Nissan Quest problems

The Nissan Quest, produced from 1993 to 2017, is known for its spacious interior and car-like handling. However, certain model years have been plagued with specific issues that have caused frustration for owners.

One of the most common problems across various model years is transmission-related issues. The Quest can develop various issues such as hesitation when shifting gears, rough transition during a shift, abrupt deceleration, reduced acceleration, and transmission failure. Replacing faulty Nissan Quest transmission parts can be costly and drivers have reported the problem persisting or returning despite costly repairs. For instance, some 2007 Nissan Quest transmissions tend to jerk while driving, accompanied by other transmission issues like hesitation, slippage, and failure to engage gears.

Another issue that has affected various model years, particularly the 2004, 2006, and 2007 models, is engine noise. These unpleasant noises are often caused by worn-out timing chains, timing chain guides, or timing chain tensioners. While the engine can sometimes still run fine despite the background rattling, it can potentially get damaged.

The 2004 model year has received the most overall complaints, but the 2007 model year is considered the worst due to other factors such as higher repair cost or more problems at lower mileage. The most-reported problem for the 2007 model year is transmission jerking while driving, with an average cost to fix of $2,300 and an average mileage of 104,000 mi.

In addition to transmission and engine issues, the 2004 model year has been associated with engine stalling, failing engine mounts, and fuel injector problems. These issues can cause thumping in the floor, drivability concerns, and potential engine failure.

Brake problems have also been a concern for certain model years, with some brake issues showing up fairly often in certain models. Few things are scarier than brakes acting up during driving, so it's crucial to address any brake issues promptly.

When considering a used Nissan Quest, it's essential to research the specific model year and be aware of any common issues that may arise. This knowledge can help potential buyers make informed decisions and budget for potential repairs.

  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TAIL LIGHTS
  • Summary: THE REAR LAMP SOCKET MAY NOT ILLUMINATE BECAUSE THE METAL CAN IN THE LAMP SOCKET MOVES OR SEPARATES FROM THE PLASTIC SOCKET HOUSING.
  • Consequence: THIS CAN RESULT IN MALFUNCTION OF THE STOP OR REAR RUNNING LAMPS. CENTER HIGH MOUNT STOP LAMP FUNCTION IS UNAFFECTED. REAR LAMP MALFUNCTION CAN RESULT IN FOLLOWING DRIVERS NOT BEING ALERTED TO THE SUBJECT VEHICLE'S PRESENCE OR INTENDED ACTIONS, PARTICULARLY IN THE CASE IN WHICH BOTH LAMPS HAVE MALFUNCTIONED.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REVISED REAR LAMP SOCKET AND WIRING ASSEMBLIES.

Negative 1994 Nissan Quest car reviews

  1. Brock Herzog 2024-06-29

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 94 car. I bought it back in 98 with only 61k miles on it, and now it has over 210k miles! Throughout the years, I've had to replace a few things like the axels, water pump, brakes and rotors, alternator, spark plugs, all belts, hoses, tires, blower motor, and battery. I've also learned that when it's above 80 degrees, it's best to use premium fuel or let it idle for half an hour before driving 10 miles to avoid stalling. The first time it happened was in heavy traffic in Kansas City during the summer of 99, but I quickly learned my lesson. Despite a few minor issues like the rear air/heater having an electrical problem and the driver's shoulder strap not retracting, it still runs great and doesn't use any oil between oil changes. Overall, I'm confident it will hit 300k miles and beyond! Thanks for listening.

Positive 1994 Nissan Quest car reviews

  1. Alexander Daniel 2024-10-15

Congratulations on your new van! It sounds like you've already had some great experiences with it, adding 600 miles in just 3 weeks. From your description, it seems like the van is in good condition, with excellent performance and fuel economy on the highway. It's great to hear that the dash is clean and easy to read, and that the body is still in great shape. It's clear that you have a lot of love for your van, and we hope it continues to serve you well. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Rickie Mraz 2024-09-29

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I've had my quest for about 10 years now and it's still running great! Occasionally, the automatic transmission will take a few seconds to shift into drive, but that's never been a problem for me. After all, I only paid $1,100 for it! Currently, it has almost 160k miles on it.

  3. Kayleigh Kreiger 2024-09-14

The Quest is a sedan with some extra space, and even after 110k miles, the V6 is still smooth and potent once revved up. It has little body lean and still rides nicely. The interior design is incredibly easy to configure for people or cargo hauling, and it has some nice creature comforts with great ergonomics. This Quest has been a faithful everyday driver, abused with everything from freeway commutes to shuttling kids to road trips. I highly recommend the Quest to anyone looking for a minivan and will definitely be buying another one when this one dies on me. That won't be for a while since it's pretty darn reliable.

  4. Bertha Jacobs 2024-08-04

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with this car that I bought new for my family. It has been a reliable companion for many years, running smoothly and quietly. The only issues we've had have been with the electrical system. Unfortunately, the fan on the heater/air conditioning stopped working and we've had trouble finding a mechanic who can fix it without charging exorbitant fees. After three hours of searching, we decided to live with it as it is. Despite this setback, I'm determined to reach 200,000 miles on this car - that's my goal for this Quest! While it may not be the most stylish car out there, it has outlasted any other car I've owned in the past 50 years, and for that, I'm truly grateful.

  5. Sammie Stoltenberg 2024-08-04

I recently purchased a used 1994 Nissan Quest from the original owner (my father) and I must say, it has been a welcome change from driving an SUV for the past 5 years! The drive is smooth and quiet, and the storage capacity of the minivan is impressive. Overall, I would rate this vehicle a 9.0. It's a great choice for former SUV owners!
