2009 Nissan Quest problems
The Nissan Quest is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Nissan for model years 1993–2017 over four generations.
The first two generations (internally designated V40 and V41) of the Quest were short-wheelbase models co-developed and manufactured with Ford, aside its badge engineered Mercury Villager. For model year 2004 and the third generation (V42), Nissan ended its joint venture with Ford, manufacturing the Quest on its own. For model year 2011, the fourth generation (RE52) became a widened variant of the Nissan Elgrand minivan and was now manufactured in Japan. For the preceding generations, the Quest loosely shared its chassis and powertrain with the Nissan Maxima.
Following the decline of minivan sales in North America, Nissan ended sales of the Quest after the 2017 model year.

Common 2009 Nissan Quest problems
The Nissan Quest, produced from 1993 to 2017, is known for its well-equipped features and car-like handling. However, it has faced several issues over the years, particularly with its transmission and engine.
Transmission problems are a significant concern for Nissan Quest owners. The Quest can develop various issues like hesitation when shifting gears, rough transition during a shift, abrupt deceleration, reduced acceleration, and transmission failure. Replacing faulty Nissan Quest transmission parts can be costly, and drivers have reported the problem persisting or returning despite costly repairs. In particular, some 2007 Nissan Quest transmissions tend to jerk while driving, accompanied by other transmission issues like hesitation, slippage, and failure to engage gears. Even the improved automatic transmission of late-generation units like the 2016 model year can jerk and hesitate while shifting between gears. Some 2012 Nissan Quests may also develop similar issues that can lead to premature transmission failure.
Engine problems are another common issue for Nissan Quest owners. Rattling noises are considered the worst of the lot, often caused by worn-out timing chains, timing chain guides, or timing chain tensioners. While the engine can sometimes still run fine despite the background rattling, it can potentially get damaged. Many units belonging to the 2004, 2006, and 2007 model years are particularly prone to engine noises.
Brake problems are also a concern for Nissan Quest owners. While Nissan Quest brakes are generally reliable, some brake problems can show up fairly often in certain model years, such as the 2004 model year, which had 4 total recalls, 4 NHTSA investigations, and 129 Technical Service Bulletins.
In summary, while the Nissan Quest is a well-equipped alternative to bigger cars, it has faced several issues over the years, particularly with its transmission, engine, and brakes. Owners of the 2004, 2007, and 2012 model years, in particular, have reported experiencing these issues.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE CITY STREETS, THE CAR WILL START GOING SLOW AND STOP BY ITS SELF AFTER SHOWING THAT THERE IS NOW GASOLINE. - Summary: OUR GAS GAUGE INDICATED THAT WE HAD 1/4 TANK OF GAS. THE TANK WAS EMPTY. WE ENDED UP STRANDED ON THE HIGHWAY IN 80 DEGREE WEATHER WITH TWO YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE CAR TILL AAA WAS ABLE TO BRING US GAS. WE GOT TO THE GAS STATION AND FILLED UP AND THE TANK LITERALLY TOOK OVER 20 GALLONS, WHICH MEANS IT WAS COMPLETELY EMPTY EVEN THOUGH THE GAS GAUGE SAID WE STILL HAD 1/4 TANK. IN ADDITION, ONLY A FEW WEEKS BEFORE, WE HAD JUST REPLACED THE GAS GAUGE WITH A BRAND NEW, NISSAN GAS GAUGE. NISSAN HAS ALREADY ISSUED A RECALL ON 2009 QUESTS FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT APPARENTLY MY QUEST'S VIN IS NOT AMONG THOSE RECALLED, SO THEY WON'T FIX THE PROBLEM WITHOUT MY PAYING A NISSAN DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSIS AND THEN WRITING A CLAIM. I THINK THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND THEY NEED TO EXPAND THE RECALL TO ALL 2009 NISSAN QUESTS. I SHOULD NOT BE CHARGED FOR A FIX THAT IS CLEARLY SPECIFIC TO THIS NISSAN VEHICLE'S PROBLEM. *TR
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-03-24
- VIN: 5N1BV28U49N
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

THEY ADVISED THEY WOULD CONTACT US WITHIN A FEW MONTHS TO DO SO. THEY HAVE NOT CONTACTED US IN ANY WAY. AS FAR AS WE KNOW WE MUST CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN THE GAS LEVEL. WHEN WE CALLED THEY SAID THERE WOULD NOT BE SENDING A LETTER RESCINDING THE FIRST LETTER'S REQUIREMENTS AND THAT ONLY THOSE CAR OWNERS NEEDING REPAIR WOULD RECEIVE A FOLLOWUP LETTER. THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A MINUTE. IF THEY ADVISE YOU BY LETTER THAT YOU MUST TAKE ACTION TO AVOID A PROBLEM, THEN THEY MUST ADVISE YOU THAT SUCH NO LONGER NEEDS TO BE DONE ALSO BY LETTER. PLEASE REQUIRE THEM TO DO SO TO ALL THE CAR OWNERS WHO THINK THEY HAVE A FUEL GAUGE PROBLEM. *TR
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Summary: THIS NISSAN QUEST HAD THE REAR BRAKE PADS CHANGED IN DECEMBER 2014. THIS WILL BE THE 3RD SET (INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL ONES WHEN PURCHASED) OF BRAKES ON THE REAR SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASE NEW AT THE DEALER. THE FRONT BRAKE PADS ARE ALSO ON THEIR 3RD SET. THE DEALERSHIP STATES IT IS MY BRAKING HABITS MAKING THE PADS WEAR OUT SO QUICKLY. THE FRONT BRAKE PADS WEAR OUT AROUND 35,000- 37,000 MILES. THE REAR BRAKE PADS LAST AROUND 40,000 MILES. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS 86,000 MILES ON IT AND WAS PURCHASE NEW. I SPOKE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND INFORMED THEM THAT IF EITHER THE FRONT OR REAR BRAKE PADS WEAR OUT WITHIN THE SAME TIME AS THE PREVIOUS ONES HAD, THAT A NISSAN REPRESENTATIVE WOULD NEED TO INVESTIGATE. WITHIN ALL MY YEARS OF DRIVING AND OWING VEHICLES I HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE BRAKES LIKE I HAVE ON THIS VEHICLE. *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-01-01
- Components: STRUCTURE

THE DRIVER SIDE MANUAL SLIDING DOOR GETS STUCK RANDOMLY, AND ONE MUST PULL ON IT SO HARD (TO GET IT OPEN), THAT ONE IS FEARFUL OF THE HANDLE BREAKING OFF. THIS ISSUE IS NOT AS BAD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AS IT IS THE DRIVER'S SIDE. *TR
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-09-01
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE FRONT ENGINE MOUNT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, AS IT WAS STARTING TO WEAR. THE ENGINE WAS NOT MOVING AT ALL AT THIS TIME. IN DECEMBER 2014 WAS TOLD AGAIN OF THE ENGINE MOUNT AT THE DEALER (ENGINE STILL NOT MOVING). SPOKE WITH MECHANIC REGARDING ISSUE AND WHY HE THINKS IT NEEDS REPLACING. I WAS SHOWN BY THE MECHANIC WHY HE THINKS IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I TOLD THE MECHANIC AND THE SERVICE PERSONNEL THAT WITHIN ALL THE YEARS OF MY DRIVING AND THAT WITH ALL THE VEHICLES I HAVE OWNED I HAVE NEVER REPLACED AN ENGINE MOUNT. ASK MECHANIC IF THIS WAS AN ISSUE WITH ALL NISSAN'S OR JUST THE QUEST, THE RESPONSE I RECEIVED WAS ONLY THE QUEST. *TR

- Summary: WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF PURCHASE OF THIS VEHICLE I HAVE BEEN HAVING SEVERE SAFETY ISSUES ON THIS VEHICLE. IT INITIALLY STARTED OUT AS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WHICH TOOK QUITE SOME TIME TO REPLICATE SINCE A SPECIFIC CHAIN OF EVENTS HAD TO BE FOLLOWED. BUT SINCE THEN, THE PROBLEM CAN BE REPLICATED AT WILL BUT AGAIN ITS BASED ON A SEQUENCE OF EVENTS AND ROAD CONDITIONS. THE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES HORRIBLY AND THERE IS A LOUD RUMBLING NOISE. THE CAR IS DIFFICULT TO HANDLE ONCE THIS VIBRATION STARTS. IT FEELS AS IF THE CAR HAS A FLAT TIRE OR THE AXLE HAS BEEN SEVERELY DAMAGED THUS IMPAIRING STEERING CONTROL. MAY 20TH 2010 WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD THE ISSUE WITH THE QUEST WHILE I WAS ON IL INTERSTATE 57. SEPT, 11 2010 IS WHEN THIS HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE I WAS HEADED TO FLORIDA. OCT. 4TH, 2010 IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON FLORIDA INTERSTATE 275. IT CONTINUED TO OCCUR REPEATEDLY. I REPORTED THIS PROBLEM TO NISSAN ON JULY,18TH, 2011 WITH 31,573 MILES ON THE VAN. THE NISSAN FOLKS DROVE 189 MILES BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE ISSUE. ON JAN. 2, THEY TRIED BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE ISSUE FEB. 1ST, 2012 THE SERVICE MANAGER AND I DROVE 200 MILES IN ORDER TO REPLICATE IT. WE NOTICED THAT THE VDC LIGHT CAME ON. THE GUESSING GAME ON THE NISSAN SIDE CONTINUED. THEY REPLACED THE ABS SYSTEM STOP LAMP SWITCH, AND OTHER ABS RELATED ITEMS. ONCE THEY HANDED US THE VEHICLE STATING THAT THE ISSUE WAS FIXED, WE TOOK IT ON A TEST DRIVE AND WERE ABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM. MAY 29, 2012 I TOOK QUEST BACK IN BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE ISSUE WHILE THE NISSAN FOLKS TOOK IT OUT ON A TEST DRIVE. ON JUNE 18, THE SERVICE MANAGER AND I WENT ON ANOTHER 200 MILES ROAD TRIP AND I WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THIS TIME THEY BLAMED THE WHEEL BEARINGS TO BE THE CAUSE SO THEY REPLACED THAT BUT AGAIN THAT WAS NOT THE CULPRIT AS I WAS ABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM WHEN I TOOK IT ON A TEST DRIVE ONCE NISSAN HANDED ME THE VEHICLE. *TR

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-02-19
- VIN: 5N1BV28U89N
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: WENT ON A ROAD TRIP. OUR NEW NISSAN QUEST 2009 WAS FINE UNTIL AFTER 4 HOURS OF DRIVING AND THEN SUDDENLY THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO SHAKE. IT SHOOK SO BADLY THAT WE THOUGHT WE HAD A FLAT TIRE. IT CONTINUED TO SHAKE UNTIL WE PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. WE WENT BACK ON THE HIGHWAY AND IT WAS FINE FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS AND THEN ACTED UP AGAIN. THE SAME THING HAPPENED. IT WON'T LET US ACCELERATE AND NO MATTER HOW SLOW WE GO IT WAS STILL SHAKING. WE HAD AN INFANT IN THE VAN AND OUR OTHER SON WAS 5 YRS. VERY DANGEROUS TO BE ON THE ROAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AND HAVING TO PULL OVER EVERY COUPLE OF HOURS WHEN IT STARTED ACTING UP. IMAGINE WHEN THERE ARE NO SHOULDERS TO PULL OVER AND THE VAN WAS SHAKING SO BAD THAT YOU CAN'T CONTROL IT. PLEASE RECALL THIS ITEM. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM/ROTORS ETC.*TR
LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-10-06
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: I HAVE CUSTOMER FEEDBACK/CONCERN ON THE NISSAN QUEST 2009. LAST WEEK THE VAN OWNER WAS PUTTING THE KIDS IN THE BACK OF THE VAN AND ASKED THE THREE YEAR OLD TO GET IN THE CAR WHILE SHE WAS HELPING THE OTHER 2 YEAR OLD GET IN AS WELL. THE SLIDING DOOR WAS OPENED, MOVED TO THE END BUT NOT LATCHED IN THE OPEN POSITION. IT WAS A WINDY DAY AND THE DOOR STARTED TO SLIDE DOWN TO THE CLOSE POSITION. THE 3 YEAR OLD CHILD WAS GETTING IN AND HAD HIS HAND BY THE DOOR LOCK HELPING HIMSELF UP. AT THAT TIME, THE DOOR CLOSED VERY HARD WITH THE WIND, PINCHED HIS HAND AND LATCHED CLOSED WITH THE CHILD'S HAND IN BETWEEN. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM TO CHECK HIS HAND. I WORKED AS A DESIGN CONTROLS QUALITY ENGINEER. I AM REQUIRED TO ENSURE WE MINIMIZE ANY POTENTIAL RISK BY BUILDING RISK MITIGATION FEATURES INTO THE DESIGN TO AVOID ANY HAZARDOUS SITUATIONS DUE TO ANY PRODUCT FAILURE OR USER HANDLING. THUS, I AM WRITING TO INQUIRE HOW YOU CAN USE THIS FEEDBACK TO ELIMINATE THIS SAFETY CONCERN? THE QUEST IS MOST LIKELY USED BY FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN. IF THE DOOR SLIDES ITSELF TO THE CLOSE POSITION AND LATCHES CLOSED WITH A KID'S HANDS IN BETWEEN AND THERE IS NO SENSOR TO PREVENT THE DOOR FROM CLOSING, OR SOME INDICATION TO THE USER THAT THE DOOR IS NOT LOCKED IN THE OPEN POSITION, OR A WAY TO ENSURE THE DOOR IS ONLY CLOSED BY HUMAN HANDLING, I AM CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT THEY COULD DO IN THEIR PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT TO ELIMINATE THIS POTENTIAL HAZARD FROM HAPPENING? *TR

Your Quest is awesome! It has great gas mileage ranging between 27-30 MPG on the highway, and tons of space. The acceleration is phenomenal! For maximum performance, we recommend using 5W-30 Valvoline SynPower Oil or Castrol Edge (Synthetic Oil). You won't have any problems with it at all. It's absolutely the best Mini-Van option on the market. You got a great deal that Ford, Toyota, nor Honda could match. The fold-down rear seating options come in handy for moving days or hauling delicate items. With a great amount of features for the base model, this van has it all. If the opportunity arises, we would definitely buy it again!
-
With a large family of 4 children, we have to drive a mini-van. However, the Nissan Quest is not your average mini-van. It feels like you're driving a luxurious car, not just a soccer mom vehicle. The interior is amazing, my husband and I even argue over who gets to drive it. I highly recommend this van to anyone in the market for a new mini-van with a large family.
-
After looking at all the minivans available, we finally stopped at the Quest. I test drove it and absolutely loved it! The Quest drives like a car and is incredibly comfortable. The interior is spacious and the seats are very comfortable. Although the gas mileage is average for a minivan, I have no complaints. I highly recommend this van to anyone looking for a great deal compared to the Odyssey and Sienna. Additionally, I appreciate that all the seats can fold flat without having to be removed from the vehicle.
-
The Quest is a van that's enjoyable to drive and can accommodate everyone and everything, with multiple seating arrangements that don't require removing any seats or headrests. The ride is smooth and effortless, yet still fun. While we're still getting used to the navigation system, the 3-D view it offers is great. We highly recommend the Quest to anyone considering buying a minivan.

We recently upgraded from our beloved 2000 Quest SE, and I have to say, I was worried about letting it go. However, this new car's performance and ride quality have exceeded our expectations, and we couldn't be happier. Even though our old car was fully loaded, this upgrade is definitely worth it. This is our third car, and we can't seem to stay out of it! I was able to get an unbeatable deal on it, which made it very affordable compared to what Honda was offering. When comparing the options in the Quest SE, the only Honda model that could come close is the Touring, but the price was ridiculously high. We are thrilled with our new Nissan!

Within the first year and a half, I had to take my van back to the dealer for quite a few fixes. There was a missing piece in the braking component, which they promptly replaced. They also had to replace the seals for the sliding door and hatch, and the visors broke off just by opening them, but they were replaced as well. My van was bogging while driving and the check engine light came on, so I had to tow it back to the dealership. They changed out the cylynoids and two major components for the A/C, which used to come on only when it felt like it. Unfortunately, when I went to pick up the van after the A/C repair, it wouldn't start. In the end, I couldn't lemon law it because I didn't have 3x for the same problem. So, I traded the van in for a 2009 Altima. Wish me luck! :)
Jesus Fahey 2024-08-22
I agree with everyone who has had problems with this van. The interior quality is cheap, with mirrors and visors that easily break, and the AC that zips sues. The driver and passenger windows stop working, but the very rear vent windows work. I changed out the motor, controller, fuses (inside and out), and they still don't work. The rear end went out, the power steering pump went out, and the siding on the interior seats started coming off. In my opinion, this van is horrible and I would not recommend buying it, new or used.

We purchased our van in 2008 with the hope of owning a brand new vehicle. Unfortunately, within a year, we experienced some issues such as the mirror visor breaking off, the armrest falling off, and the rubber seals on the side doors coming off. Today, while driving, I heard a flapping noise and noticed that the metal insert on top of the van, where you would have the racks, was flapping on the side of the van. I had to pull over to avoid it hitting someone else's vehicle. It seems like the vehicle is made cheaply, considering the short amount of time we've had it.
Guillermo Mills 2024-04-10
In 2008, we purchased a brand new Nissan Quest and initially enjoyed every aspect of it. However, after about a month, we began experiencing some issues. The windows would whistle as we picked up speed (although the dealership claimed it was normal), and we had some problems with the AC not working properly (which the dealership fixed). Unfortunately, as time went on, the van started to have more and more issues. The passenger side mirror cover on the visor fell off, the body rattled, the passenger side window motor stopped working, the brake disks warped and had to be replaced, and the paint would scratch or the body would dent at the slightest touch. While the features are nice, the van is built too cheaply. We are looking forward to getting rid of it!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2008 van that I purchased used with only 500 miles on it. I was initially surprised that someone would trade in a vehicle with such low mileage, but I was really drawn to the style and the lay down 2 row seats. However, after taking it on a long ride of over 100 miles, I found that the ride was quite hard and it left my kidneys aching for two days. I went back to the dealership and they were really helpful, trying different things like exchanging the tires, using nitrogen, and adjusting the tire pressure and seating positions. While some of these things helped, I still couldn't get completely comfortable. I spoke to managers and other salespeople, but unfortunately, we couldn't find a solution. We even tried switching from leather seats to cloth, but that didn't make a difference either.
