1996 Nissan Quest problems
The Nissan Quest is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Nissan for model years 1993–2017 over four generations.
The first two generations (internally designated V40 and V41) of the Quest were short-wheelbase models co-developed and manufactured with Ford, aside its badge engineered Mercury Villager. For model year 2004 and the third generation (V42), Nissan ended its joint venture with Ford, manufacturing the Quest on its own. For model year 2011, the fourth generation (RE52) became a widened variant of the Nissan Elgrand minivan and was now manufactured in Japan. For the preceding generations, the Quest loosely shared its chassis and powertrain with the Nissan Maxima.
Following the decline of minivan sales in North America, Nissan ended sales of the Quest after the 2017 model year.

Common 1996 Nissan Quest problems
The Nissan Quest, manufactured from 1993 to 2017, is a popular minivan in the used vehicle market. While it is considered one of the better minivan models, it does have its share of problems, depending on the specific model year. The 2004 and 2007 model years have received the most complaints, with issues tending to show up earlier, being more likely to be serious, or costing more to repair in the 2007 model year.
One of the most common problems with the Nissan Quest is transmission-related issues. These can include hesitation when shifting gears, rough transitions during a shift, abrupt deceleration, reduced acceleration, and transmission failure. Replacing faulty transmission parts can be costly, and drivers have reported the problem persisting or returning despite costly repairs. In particular, some 2007 Nissan Quest transmissions tend to jerk while driving, accompanied by other transmission issues like hesitation, slippage, and failure to engage gears. This can make the minivan impossible to drive safely.
Another common problem with the Nissan Quest is engine noises, particularly rattling noises. These are often caused by worn-out timing chains, timing chain guides, or timing chain tensioners. While the engine can sometimes still run fine despite the background rattling, it can potentially get damaged. Many units belonging to the 2004, 2006, and 2007 model years are particularly prone to engine noises.
Brake problems can also occur in the Nissan Quest. While the brakes are generally reliable, some brake problems can show up fairly often in certain model years. These can include issues with the brake pedal, brake lines, and brake rotors.
Lastly, the 1996 Nissan Quest has modest owner reports and few NHTSA-filed complaints about the fuel and cooling systems. However, most problems involve things like a malfunctioning hatch lid, which is a significant matter but does not include more vital systems.
In summary, the Nissan Quest has several common problems, including transmission-related issues, engine noises, brake problems, and fuel and cooling system issues. The 2004 and 2007 model years have received the most complaints, with issues tending to show up earlier, being more likely to be serious, or costing more to repair in the 2007 model year. It is essential to be aware of these potential issues when considering purchasing a used Nissan Quest.

THE GAS ODOR WOULD COME ON MAINLY WHEN THE A/C WAS ON. I CONTACTED CUSTOMER SERVICE AT THE DEALER AND ALL THEY COULD TELL ME IS THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. 1 YEAR LATER AFTER LIVING WITH THIS GAS ODOR MY VAN EXPLODED AND THE ENTIRE ENGINE BURNED. - VIN: 4N2DN11W7TD
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: MY QUEST WOULD TAKE A LONG TIME TO GET HEAT INTO THE INTERIOR. RECENTLY IT STARTED OVERHEATING AS WELL. I REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT, BUT ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS SAY TO INSTALL THE THERMOSTAT SO THE SPRING IS FACING TO THE INSIDE OF THE ENGINE. HOWEVER, THE T'STAT LISTED FOR THIS VEHICLE WILL NOT FIT WITH THE SPRING TO THE INSIDE OF THE ENGINE; AND THE ORIGINAL T'STAT (I DON'T THINK IT HAS EVER BEEN REPLACED - IT HAD NISSAN ON IT) WAS INSTALLED WITH THE SPRING END FACING THE HOSE END. SO I INSTALLED A SHORTER T'STAT SO THE SPRING WOULD FIT TOWARD THE ENGINE. NOW THE INTERIOR GETS HEAT QUICKLY, BUT THE ENGINE STILL OVERHEATS. THE RADIATOR CAP HAS BEEN REPLACED, AND THE COOLING SYSTEM FLUSHED. THE PROBLEM EPRSISTS.
1996 Nissan Quest recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1996 Nissan Quest.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINIVANS. THE FUEL TANK VENT HOSE ALLOWS AIR TO VENT FROM THE FUEL TANK DURING REFUELING. CRACKS HAVE DEVELOPED IN THE VENT HOSE. IF (1) THE FUEL TANK IS OVERFILLED, NOT ALLOWING EXCESS FUEL IN THE VENT HOSE TO FLOW BACK INTO THE TANK, (2) THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN ONLY A SHORT DISTANCE AFTER REFUELING AND, (3) THERE IS SUBSEQUENTLY SIGNIFICANT HEATING OF THE FUEL TANK, THE FUEL IN THE TANK CAN EXPAND INTO THE VENT HOSE AND LEAK FUEL.
- Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE VENT HOSE.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINI VANS. THESE VEHICLES WERE PRODUCED WITH POWER WINDOWS THAT CAN BE CLOSED AFTER THE IGNITION KEY IS TURNED TO THE "OFF" POSITION AND THE RIGHT FRONT (PASSENGER) DOOR IS OPENED. THIS DOES NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS 118, "POWER-OPERATED WINDOW SYSTEMS."
- Consequence: THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR UNSUPERVISED CHILDREN TO OPERATE THE POWER WINDOWS, INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY TO THE CHILD.
- Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A LABEL REMINDING OWNERS NOT TO LEAVE CHILDREN UNATTENDED BECAUSE THE POWER WINDOWS CAN OPERATE FOR 15 MINUTES AFTER THE VEHICLE IGNITION HAS BEEN TURNED OFF UNLESS THE DRIVER'S DOOR IS OPENED. ALSO INCLUDED ARE INSTRUCTIONS DESCRIBING HOW AND WHERE THIS LABEL IS TO BE INSTALLED. IF AN OWNER PREFERS, THEIR DEALER CAN INSTALL THIS LABEL FOR THEM.

This has been a great dependable vehicle. You've taken good care of it with regular oil changes, tune-ups, and maintenance. You couldn't ask for a better vehicle. It's great to hear that you plan to keep it for quite a while, especially since it only has 66,000 miles on it!
Marcellus Kohler 2024-11-22
The Nissan Quest is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned! I have about 125000 miles on mine now, and it has served our purpose very well in every aspect you can imagine. However, I am looking for something different because I have three boys, and it is just a little small for a family of five.
Jess VonRueden 2024-11-18
Our Quest will be 7 years old in September. As a family of 6, we have truly enjoyed our mini van. It has never given us any trouble. We are just starting to search for a new car, only because mom is ready.
Vinnie Hills 2024-11-11
You've been doing great with this van!
Harry Treutel 2024-11-09
We've had this minivan for 7 years and 125,000 miles, and it's still going strong! Unlike our friend's Chrysler Town and Country, which started rattling at 40,000 miles, our minivan has no rattles and handles and brakes well. The ride is good, but it could use a bit more power. We've only had a few issues with it, such as the air conditioning and motorized seat belt on the passenger side failing, as well as having to replace a radiator. Other than that, everything runs like new. However, as our kids have grown up, we need more room, and that's where GM minivans come in - they have substantially more leg room. Thank you for considering our experience with this minivan!
