2001 Nissan Quest problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Quest is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Nissan for model years 1993–2017 over four generations.

The first two generations (internally designated V40 and V41) of the Quest were short-wheelbase models co-developed and manufactured with Ford, aside its badge engineered Mercury Villager. For model year 2004 and the third generation (V42), Nissan ended its joint venture with Ford, manufacturing the Quest on its own. For model year 2011, the fourth generation (RE52) became a widened variant of the Nissan Elgrand minivan and was now manufactured in Japan. For the preceding generations, the Quest loosely shared its chassis and powertrain with the Nissan Maxima.

Following the decline of minivan sales in North America, Nissan ended sales of the Quest after the 2017 model year.

Common 2001 Nissan Quest problems

The Nissan Quest, manufactured from 1993 to 2017, is known for its comfortable ride and car-like handling. However, certain model years have specific issues that owners have reported more frequently than others.

One of the most common problems across various model years is transmission-related issues. These problems include hesitation when shifting gears, rough transitions during shifts, abrupt deceleration, reduced acceleration, and transmission failure. Replacing faulty transmission parts can be expensive, and drivers have reported the problem persisting or returning despite costly repairs. In particular, some 2007 Nissan Quest transmissions tend to jerk while driving, accompanied by other transmission issues like hesitation, slippage, and failure to engage gears. This problem can make the minivan impossible to drive safely.

Engine problems are also common, with rattling noises being considered the worst of the lot. These unpleasant noises are often caused by worn-out timing chains, timing chain guides, or timing chain tensioners. While the engine can sometimes still run fine despite the background rattling, it can potentially get damaged. Many units belonging to the 2004, 2006, and 2007 model years are particularly prone to engine noises.

Brake problems can also be an issue in certain model years. While Nissan Quest brakes are generally reliable, some brake problems can show up fairly often in certain models. Few things are scarier than the brakes acting up during driving.

The 2004 and 2007 model years appear to be the worst for the Nissan Quest, with a high number of complaints and issues. The 2004 model year has the most overall complaints, while the 2007 model year is considered worse due to other possible factors such as higher repair cost or more problems at lower mileage.

In conclusion, while the Nissan Quest is generally considered a good minivan, certain model years, particularly 2004 and 2007, have more issues than others. Transmission-related problems, engine noises, and brake issues are common complaints across various model years.

THE NISSAN DEALER FURTHER STATED, WHEN A CUSTOMER WHOSE VEHICLE IS UNDER WARRANTY HAS THIS SAME PROBLEM, THEY DO NOT REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THE CD PLAYER IS REPLACED WITH ANOTHER. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-01-18
  • VIN: JN8DR07Y01W
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2001 NISSAN PATHFINDER 3.5L 4WD SE MODEL STARTED MISFIRING AT 89,000 MILES, WHICH THE JEFF WYLER NISSAN DEALERSHIP IN OHIO ADVISED ON REPLACING AN IGNITION COIL. CAR RAN OK FOR 2 WEEKS, THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AND THIS TIME IT WAS A VALVE TIMING SENSOR. REPLACED THAT AND 2 WEEKS LATER MORE MISFIRING, AND THE SAME DEALER SAYS IT'S ANOTHER IGNITION COIL. A LITTLE RESEARCH SHOWS THERE ARE OVER 2500 PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ENGINE TYPE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUES (MAXIMAS), AND OTHER CAR MANUFACTURERS NOT HAVING THIS ISSUE. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS DEFECT AND NEEDS SERIOUS SCRUTINY OR LEGAL ACTION.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-09-02
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: THE PASSENGER'S SIDE AUTOMATIC WINDOW STARTED MAKING A GRINDING NOISE, SLOWED AND EVENTUALLY STOPPED WORKING. I HAD TO PULL THE WINDOW UP WHILE WORKING THE BUTTON. THE SAME DAY THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW WAS MAKING THE SAME SOUNDS AND ALSO FAILED. I TOOK OFF THE INSIDE OF THE PASSENGER'S DOOR, I NOTICED THAT A PLASTIC PIECE HOLDING A METAL CABLE ON THE WINDOW REGULATOR HAD BROKEN IN HALF. WHEN I CHECKED THE DRIVER'S DOOR I SAW IT HAD BROKEN IN THE SAME SPOT. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO CATCH THE PROBLEM BEFORE BOTH MOTORS BURN OUT. THE FAILURE CAUSED THE CABLE TO TANGLE AROUND THE REGULATOR'S WHEEL ASSEMBLY, IT KINKED AND FRAYED THE CABLE. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND PURCHASED BOTH ASSEMBLIES AT A VERY STEEP PRICE. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A DESIGN FLAW AND SHOULD ALSO BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY RECALL FOR THE MANUFACTURER. *NM

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-04-08
  • VIN: 4N2ZN15T71D
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: MY MIDDLE DRIVERS SEAT BELT CLIP HAS BROKEN. ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO THE SLEEVE IT IS IN STARTED TO SLIP AND COME LOOSE. UNTIL IT FINALLY CAME OFF AND FEEL APART. I WENT TO THE DEALER, AT FIRST THEY TOLD ME IT WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY THEN WHEN I TOLD HIM IT HAD A LIFETIME WARRANTY HE CHECKED ON IT AND SCHEDULED ME WITH A SERVICE APPOINTMENT IN A WEEK. WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN FOR SERVICE, I WAS TOLD THEY NEEDED TO ORDER A PART AND IT WOULD TAKE A WEEK OR SO. IT HAS NOW BEEN 16 DAYS AND I HAVE NOT BEEN TOLD THE PART IS IN. WHEN I CALLED THEY PUT ME TO PARTS, BUT NO ONE ANSWERED AFTER 5 MINUTES. I CALLED THEM BACK AND DID NOT GET ANY ANSWER FROM THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. NO ONE SEEMS CONCERNED THAT MY MINI VAN, WHICH IS USED TO HAUL CHILDREN, DOES NOT HAVE A WORKING SEAT BELT. *JB

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-10-05
  • VIN: 4N2ZN16TX1D
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: THE DRIVER'S SIDE AUTOMATIC WINDOW SLOWED AND EVENTUALLY STOPPED WORKING. BECAUSE OF THE FAILURE WE HAD TO LEAVE OUR VEHICLE IN A PUBLIC PARKING LOT AT ONE POINT WITH THE WINDOW FULLY OPEN. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND INVITES THEFT AMONG OTHER THINGS. ONE MONTH LATER THE PASSENGER'S SIDE WINDOW WAS MAKING THE SAME SOUNDS AND ALSO FAILED. WHEN I TOOK OFF THE INSIDE OF BOTH DOORS, THE EXACT SAME FAILURE HAD OCCURRED. A PLASTIC PIECE HOLDING A METAL CABLE ON THE WINDOW REGULATOR HAD BROKEN IN HALF IN THE SAME SPOT ON BOTH WINDOWS. THE DRIVER'S SIDE FAILURE WAS SO BAD THAT IT ALSO CAUSED THE WINDOW'S MOTOR TO BURN OUT. I CAUGHT THE PASSENGER'S SIDE WINDOW'S SYMPTOMS IN TIME BEFORE IT HAD A CHANCE TO DESTROY THAT MOTOR. THE FAILURE ON THAT SIDE CAUSED THE CABLE TO TANGLE AROUND THE REGULATOR'S WHEEL ASSEMBLY. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A DESIGN FLAW AND SHOULD ALSO BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY RECALL FOR THE MANUFACTURER. *NM

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-03-12
  • VIN: 5N1ED28T11C
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: EXHAUST MANIFOLD. I HAD TO CALL NISSAN HQ BACK BOTH TIMES JUST TO GET AND ANSWER THAT YES IT IS COVERED AND NO THEY CAN'T FIX IT. I AM COMPLETELY OVER NISSANS FAULTY WORKMANSHIP. I TOOK MY X IN TO HAVE THE 60K MAINT DONE AND THEY HAD THE NERVE TO TELL ME ABOUT MY BRAKES, BUT DIDN'T TELL ME ANYTHING ABOUT THE CRACKED MANIFOLD. THEY EVEN TOLD ME THAT THEY SAW IT BUT DIDN'T THINK IT WAS ANYTHING TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT. IF IT WASN'T FROM THE DEALER CHARGING ME FOR OVERFILLING MY TRANS FLUID AND NOT TIGHTENING A TRANS HOSE FITTING, I WOULD HAD DROVE THE THING UNTIL THE NEXT TIME TO CHANGE THE OIL AND NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE CRACK IN THE MANIFOLD OR RAN THE TRANSMISSION DRY. NOW THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT IT IS MY FAULT FOR NOT KEEPING AN EYE ON IT. I ASKED THE LADY AT HQ'S, IF I HAD TAKEN MY X IN WITH 60K MILES ON IT AND THEY HAD FOUND THE CRACK WOULD IT BE COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY? SHE TOLD ME NO THEN WENT ON TO TELL ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO BRING IT IN ON 59999K AND IT WOULD HAD BEEN. I HAD TAKEN IT IN PRIOR TO THE 60K TO WHICH THE DEALER DID NOTHING OR NOTED NOTHING. THEN AFTER FINDING THE TRANS FLUID LEAK I TOOK IT BACK IN WHICH WAS ABOUT 3 DAYS LATER. WHEN I TOOK IT BACK IN IT WAS OVER THE 60K. NOW AFTER THE DEALER QUOTED ME 4 DIFFERENT PRICES RANGING FROM 300-1500 DOLLARS ON REPAIRING THE EXACT SAME THING (EXHAUST MANIFOLD). I AM PAYING MORE FOR GAS DUE TO THE LOW MILEAGE FROM THE CRACKED/FAULTY MANIFOLD. I CONSTANTLY SMELL EXHAUST DURING TRAVELING(STOPS). AT TIMES IT IS TO THE POINT THAT I MUST KEEP THE WINDOWS OPEN. *NM

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-05-09
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 4N2ZN15T21D
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY 2001 NISSAN QUEST VAN, TRAVELLING AT BETWEEN 30 AND 35 MPH, A DRIVER OF A FULL-SIZED PICKUP TRUCK COMING FROM A SIDE STREET, DIDN'T SEE HIS STOP SIGN. HE WAS ALSO TRAVELLING AT APPROXIMATELY 30-35 MPH. I NOTICED HIM ONLY IN TIME FOR MY FOOT TO REACH THE BRAKE PEDAL BEFORE IMPACTING THE PASSENGER SIDE OF HIS TRUCK AT THE REAR OF THE PASSENGER DOOR. THE IMPACT SPUN HIS VEHICLE 180 DEGREES AND MINE ABOUT 25, FROM THE DIRECTION OF ORIGINAL TRAVEL. IT TOOK APPROXIMATELY 1 SECOND FOR MY VEHICLE TO DECELERATE FROM 35 TO 0. THE IMPACT TO MY VEHICLE WAS FROM THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE ACROSS THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE DAMAGE WAS ENOUGH TO PUSH THE RADIATOR BACK AT ABOUT A 35 DEGREE ANGLE FROM VERTICLE. I SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES AND THE OTHER PASSENGERS SUSTAINED NO TREATABLE INJURIES. IN MY OPINION THE AIRBAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED, BUT DIDN'T. THIS IS THE REASON FOR MY COMPLAINT.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-10-05
  • VIN: 4N2ZN16T41D
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: WE HAVE HAD REPEATED ISSUES WITH THE ELECTRICAL WINDOWS, VIDEO CASSETTE PLAYER, RADIO CONTROLS ON THE STEEING WHEEL, VEHICLE DIFFICULT TO GET OUT OF PARK, A RATTLING IN THE FRONT WHEEL AREA. A MONTH AGO, THE ELECTRON FUSE BLEW IN THE VEHICLE CAUSING THE VEHICLE NOT TO START, WHEN THE FUSE IS REPLACED IT BLOWS AGAIN. WE WERE TOLD THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS HAS GONE BAD - THIS VEHICLE ONLY HAS 34,000 MILES ON IT! WE WERE TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WE COULD HAVE DONE TO PREVENT IT FROM GOING BAD - "IT JUST WENT BAD". THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN INOPERABLE SINCE OCTOBER 5, 2004 - WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR A NEW WIRING HARNESS, NISSAN SENT THE WRONG PART TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE. THE CORRECT PART WE ARE TOLD IS ON BACKORDER INDEFINATELY - NISSAN HAS NO IDEA WHEN THE PART WILL BECOME AVAILABLE. A SUPERVISOR FROM NISSAN HAS FAILED TO RETURN MY PHONE CALLS AND THEY WILL NOT COVER THE REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS 38 MONTHS OLD (EVEN THOUGH IT ONLY HAS 34,000 MILES ON IT). HOW CAN A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD HAVE A PART, THAT THE VEHICLE WILL NOT RUN WITHOUT, BE ON BACKORDER INDEFINATELY? AND, HOW CAN A MAJOR WIRING PART GO BAD SO SOON AND NISSAN NOT BE LIABLE FOR IT? *AK

Negative 2001 Nissan Quest car reviews

  1. Jovany Morar 2024-09-25

    1. Nice catch! I noticed some repeated alignment issues. 2. The leather seats are definitely worth the extra money, as well as the moonroof, upgraded stereo, and VCR. 3. The visibility is great, but it can be a bit challenging to maneuver in parking lots. 4. The steering wheel controls for the stereo are incredibly helpful. 5. The running boards, alloy wheels, and silver color add some sporty details to the otherwise solid design. 6. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by some electrical problems with the rear windshield wiper. The service department has not yet resolved these difficulties. Additionally, there are some other electrical issues, such as the overdrive on/off switch and the digital readout for the stereo and clock, which are both working intermittently. 7. I'm happy to report that I have never experienced any engine, brake, or transmission problems.

  2. Macey Gerlach 2024-09-19

That's a really nice car, although it may be a bit pricey.

  3. Carter Okuneva 2024-06-02

During the first 8000 miles, I had to return the car for warranty repair 5 times, all of which were related to a/c problems. The last 3 visits were due to gas leaks, and if it had required a 4th visit, the CA lemon law would have applied. Although I initially thought it was a good value for my need to seat 7, I would not purchase it again due to its poor quality. With 14000 miles on it, the windows rattle, the tailgate sags, the tires lose 5lbs of air every 2 weeks, there are strange metallic sounds when the engine starts, and a musky odor emanates from the air vents. However, I am hopeful that it will last until I can afford to trade it in.

  4. Ross Torphy 2024-01-15

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with this vehicle. I was initially drawn to its sleek and stylish design, but unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it in the 1 1/2 years I've owned it. For example, shortly after purchasing it, a door sensor malfunctioned and caused the car to think a door was open when it wasn't. Additionally, the sliding door window came loose and made an annoying noise until it was replaced. I also noticed that the passenger door window makes a noise when going up or down, but the dealer says there's nothing wrong with it. Overall, I think there's room for improvement, but I still appreciate the van's attractive appearance. Thanks for listening!

Positive 2001 Nissan Quest car reviews

  1. Craig Tremblay 2024-11-06

This mini van has been excellent for us! We bought it brand new in 2000 and have put about 55K miles on it since then. It is fully loaded and everything still works perfectly. We have only done regular maintenance on it. While the gas mileage could be better, I have had a blast driving it. It's the ultimate 'MOM' mobile, with removable middle seat captain chairs and a rear seat that can be moved right up in front to haul lots of stuff.

  2. Lawson Upton 2024-11-01

I love this van! While it may not be an Odyssey, it offers great value for the price and equipment. The TV is a fantastic bonus and it rides really well. I've already taken it on five trips to Florida (a 9-hour journey) and my kids absolutely adore it.

  3. Glen Carroll 2024-10-22

Positive thoughts: This vehicle has great gas mileage, is comfortable and spacious, and comes with good features. It's also easy to work on when changing spark plugs, especially when compared to other minivans. Negative thoughts: However, it's worth noting that there may be some knock sensor problems that are difficult and expensive to fix if you take it to a mechanic. Additionally, the motor mounts may wear out every 6 months or sooner if you drive it on a daily basis.

This is our second Quest, the first being a 1997. It responds and handles well on turns with decent power for a minivan. We absolutely love its versatility. It can fit everything from luggage to a full-size recliner. Our grandkids adore the video system. The only issue we've had is that one of the side door windows occasionally becomes unlocked. Overall, we highly recommend it over the Toyota or Honda minivans.

This GLE comes fully loaded with a 3.3L V-6 engine, leather and burlwood trim interior, a 6-CD changer with an upgraded sound system, a VCR (although it should have been a DVD), power everything including driver seat memory, and many other features that make it a joy to drive. After about a year, the city mileage has improved considerably from around 15 mpg to 20 mpg. However, the electronic mileage fuel calculator is not accurate and should not be relied upon. So far, there have been no major issues with the car, and I hope it stays that way. The warranty will expire in a couple of months, and I plan to take it in for a few service advisories, such as side-window latches that loosen, noises from the rear suspension, and a seat belt recall. Overall, I have had no issues regarding tire quality.

The engine is easy to work on. We have only experienced a few engine issues since purchasing the vehicle and they were both easy and cheap to fix ourselves.
