Common Nissan Frontier problems
Based on complaints from owners of Nissan Frontier cars, several common problems have been reported:
- Timing Chain Problems: Some Nissan Frontier models may develop problems with the timing chains, resulting in a loud noise coming from the timing chain area. This noise is caused by excess slack in the secondary timing chains and is commonly observed around the 150,000-mile mark. If owners notice a whining or buzzing noise, it is advisable to have the pickup checked out.
- Rusty Distributor Shaft Bearing: Certain models of the Nissan Frontier are prone to rusty distributor shaft bearings. When this bearing rusts, it can seize, causing the engine to stall or fail to start. The typical fix for this issue involves replacing the distributor, with diagnostic costs averaging around $100. This problem can be critical as it affects the starting and running of the engine.
- Transmission Problems: The Nissan Frontier has been associated with transmission issues, particularly in the 2005 model year. The most common problem reported is the radiator causing transmission failure. This issue has an average cost to fix of $3,700 and occurs around 103,000 miles. Other related problems include radiator cracks leaking fluid into the transmission and coolant leaking into and damaging the transmission in subsequent model years.
These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by Nissan Frontier owners, ranging from sensor malfunctions to critical engine and transmission issues. Addressing these concerns promptly and through proper maintenance can help mitigate potential risks and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.
What problems does the Nissan Frontier have?
The Frontier can easily reach 100,000 to 200,000 on its odometer. The Nissan Frontier suffers from a few common problems, which include engine issues, defective airbags, and paint chipping.
Is the Nissan Frontier a reliable truck?
The auto repair database RepairPal gives the Nissan Frontier an overall 4 out of 5 for reliability, placing it at the top of the rankings for midsize pickups. However, there are several exceptions. Nissan Frontiers with automatic transmissions manufactured between 2005 and 2008 have a defective radiator design.
How many miles will a Nissan Frontier last?
200,000 miles
With proper care and routine maintenance, the latest generation of the Nissan Frontier has been built and designed to last over two decades, with many models able to last 200,000 miles and longer.
What are the cons of a Nissan Frontier?
Fuel economy of 18 mpg overall is not a standout among midsized pickup trucks. Handling is relatively responsive and secure, but the steering is too heavy at low speeds. Plus, the steering wheel lacks a telescope adjustment. The ride is stiff and choppy, though it's an improvement over the previous-generation Frontier.

- Date Complaint: 2024-09-20
- VIN: 1N6ED1EK8NN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: We have had multiple occasions when the dashboard read as "System Fault"with multiple warning/indicator lights. 12/12/23, while backing out of a parking space at low speed. 9/12/2024 while at a Red Light, and lightly letting off the brake. 9/13/24 while driving 65 mph . An appt was requested at the dealership of purchase for 9/17/24. An email notification was also received from the truck stating that the ABS System may be malfunctioning. When the alert warning/indicator lights appear, the alert states on the dashboard "Warning" "System Fault" "See Owners Manual" . The system generated email states "Your vehicle's antilock braking system may require service". We only received one notification from the vehicle related to the 9/12/24 alert. On 9/19/24 the dealership could not replicate or find a code related to the ABS System Fault and we were encouraged to bring the vehicle back if it happened again so they could run the code. The dealership would take the vehicle for a longer drive on 9/20/24 to try to replicate the issue. At this point, we filed a complaint with the manufacturer, and have not heard directly from the dealership if they have been able to replicate the warning. The concern for safety is that since the vehicle alerting that the ABS system may be require attention, there may be other electrical issues with the vehicle, along with braking issue concern. There was one occasion on 1/21/2024 with a system error message stating "warning when Parked apply parking brake" the vehicle had just been turned on and put in reverse. There is a large safety concern as this vehicle has had other safety issues including a half latch (where the doors would not open from inside or outside, requiring exiting through alternate door, a parking pawl recall, and transmission issues that we've brought forward in our formal complaint to the manufacturer. Including "Tow" alarm notifications to strengthen the safety concern of electrical issues with this vehicle.

- Date Complaint: 2024-08-18
- VIN: 1N6ED1EJ7NN
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: In December 2021, I purchased a 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-X. The vehicle comes with built-in navigation that, according to their website, should receive map updates quarterly. Since purchasing the vehicle, brand new, there have been no updates to the navigation system nor maps. I have gone back and forth with Nissan support and the dealership only to be told there are no updates. The maps are severely out of date, making a feature that many people rely on useless. Therefore, we are not getting full value of what we are paying for. This is a complaint for numerous Nissan owners as I've found in message board forums. Nissan is not addressing the problem and will not return my messages or address my concern directly.

This truck is not an SUV, but it handles well and has a smooth engine. I even use it to move my 26-foot, 4000-pound travel trailer, and it does so with ease. After a 15000-mile check-up, the mechanics said that the brakes were still new. I have had no problems with it in 20000 miles and still love this truck two years later. The only downside is that chaining up the tow RV can be a bit of a challenge, but I guess you need something to complain about! LOL!

Congratulations on your recent purchase of the 2011 4X4 SV crew cab with the long bed! I'm glad to hear that you've been impressed with the added safety features, good HP and handling of this vehicle. While it may be a tighter fit for you at 6'3'' and 215 lbs, it's great to hear that it's perfect for your 7 and 9 year old boys. I agree that the Nissan far outpaces the Chevy in terms of interior design, comfort and ride. When comparing the Frontier and the Tacoma, I also found the Frontier to be the better choice due to its better HP and more room in the crew cab's rear seat. Plus, the price of the Frontier is much more reasonable than the Tacoma. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I drive my Nismo pick up every day and just returned from a 2200 mile road trip with my wife and a Pomeranian. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I experienced no back pains or discomfort during the trip. The powerful V6 ran smoothly and consistently at 70s and 80s throughout all the southern states, even with a load in the bed. I also had no heating problems during Atlanta traffic jams. Although I had always driven Dodge Dakotas in the past, I must say that I am now a Nissan fan!

It's understandable to feel frustrated when people complain about their purchase without doing proper research beforehand. It's important to educate yourself and know exactly what you're buying to avoid any disappointments. Instead of nitpicking the truck apart, let's focus on providing helpful information to potential buyers. Personally, I traded my 2003 Toyota Tundra with 220K miles in on a 2022 Frontier SV LWB (long wheel base) and I absolutely love it. The drivetrain is faultless, smooth, quiet, and well-built. This is a traditional working-man's truck, not a $100K luxury SUV, but if your expectations are realistic for the Frontier, it's a fantastic vehicle. As a diehard Toyota owner, I chose the Nissan over the Tacoma because of its monumentally better drivetrain and much better driving position, both of which are important for the cross country towing I do each summer. The highway ride is quiet, comfortable, and composed, and the Nissan Zero Gravity seats are very comfortable and supportive. The only downside is a wider turning radius due to the extended wheelbase, but I knew that going in. Overall, I have no regrets with this purchase. I spent months researching and test driving to find the vehicle that met my needs, and I encourage others to do the same.

I bought my Frontier in 2004 when I was 18 and have been driving it almost daily ever since. I've taken it on trips of well over 400 miles and put it through some rigorous Off-Road and Mud trails, and it has gone everywhere I've pointed it. I've had a few mishaps, running into trees and rocks while wheeling, but the body damage was fixed with a little hammer work. I was even rear-ended in it, but barely a dent was left on the rear bumper (the plastic step came loose.) The little Toyota pickup that hit me was destroyed, but my Frontier held up great! Power is perfectly fine, it's a pickup not a race car. I'm running 31 in. tires (compared to the stock size of about 17 in.) and it runs perfectly fine, with no issues. Overall, I think it's a great truck!

This truck is a solid choice overall, with a nice interior. However, the back seat is only suitable for children and not adults. Although I had to replace the supercharger under warranty, I have had minimal functional problems. The gas mileage is not as good as my 93 frontier, but that is to be expected with a high-performance vehicle. The biggest issue I have encountered are the tires. Unfortunately, the high-performance 17-inch tires are not durable and only last 15-18k miles. Additionally, I have experienced many flats on the dirt roads I travel. The only available replacement tire is quite expensive at $220.00 apiece. Despite these issues, the truck looks great. I do find the 4ft bed to be a bit small, especially since I have a cap on mine which eliminates the use of the bed extender. At 54k miles, I had to replace the back springs and need a whole exhaust system. However, I am confident that this truck will continue to serve me well for years to come.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that if you're planning on pulling the rated 3500lbs, the clutch might be a bit weak. You might experience some slipping, even with the pedal fully out, if you're trying to pull a heavy boat out of the lake. However, I do want to mention that it's a great truck overall, although the bed might be a bit too small for my liking.

I purchased the Nissan Frontier for my small business as it was the only small pick-up truck available in the market at the time. Despite having only 500 miles on the vehicle, the transmission locked up and the truck died while I was driving it, which was a scary experience. The dealership had it for a week and said it needed a computer update. Although I was nervous to drive it again, we did, but it broke down again in a few days. This time, the accessory lights on the dashboard went on, the fan in the engine went on, and the truck wouldn't start. We tried using the key fob as instructed by Nissan, but it didn't work. The truck has been at the dealership for a week now, and they are still trying to figure out what's wrong with it. Despite their initial diagnosis of the alternator, I doubted it, and they confirmed that it wasn't the issue. They are now waiting for Nissan to get back to them. I spent $33,000 on this truck right before my business's busy season, so I wouldn't have to worry about the vehicle breaking down. However, I fear that this vehicle will be a lemon and cause ongoing issues. Unfortunately, the lemon law doesn't cover businesses, and I live in Connecticut but purchased the vehicle in Massachusetts.

I purchased my 2009 Nissan Frontier XE King Cab RWD 4-cyl, 5-speed manual as a used vehicle in May 2020 to replace my old Tacoma that was unfortunately totaled in an accident. I was looking for a basic and affordable work truck, and while I couldn't find a Toyota at a reasonable price, I came across this Nissan with 165K miles on it. By October 2020, the truck had 173K miles and unfortunately, the check engine light came on and it started running rough. After reading the trouble code 'P0303' for #3 cylinder misfire, I ordered a new set of Hitachi ignition coils and NGK platinum spark plugs (both OEM spec) along with a set of Beck-Arnley intake manifold gaskets. The intake gaskets were needed because the intake manifold must be removed first to access the coils and plugs - not the best design. After completing the repair, which fixed the issue, I reconnected the battery and found that I had no low beam headlights. After checking the bulbs, relay, and fuses, which were all okay, I took it to the dealer for diagnosis. The body control module (BCM) was not sending a signal to the relay box for the low beam headlights. The dealer quoted me $1540.69 to replace the BCM, which I declined. I am now looking into getting the BCM repaired by an aftermarket company. These are issues that I never had to deal with when I owned my Toyota. It's no wonder why a Tacoma is 30% higher on the used car market, as they don't have nearly as many nitpicking issues to deal with.

I recently purchased a 2017 Nissan Frontier S model in 2018. As someone who prefers a no-frills pickup, I was drawn to this truck's straightforward design and sharp stance. Although I've been a GM truck person for over 30 years, I was turned off by the new body styles with square wheel wells and smurky front ends. After doing some research and reading reviews, I decided to check out the 2017 Frontier. I opted for the extended cab since I don't need rear seats. During the test drive, I was impressed with the truck's appearance and decided to purchase it. However, after driving it for 300 miles, I noticed that the extended doors didn't feel right opening and closing. Upon further inspection, I found that the bolts holding the door hinges were loose. I tightened them up with lock tight and the problem was fixed. I also noticed that some push pins or plastic rivets were missing, which was apparently overlooked at the factory. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my Frontier. Although I've experienced some problems with the OEM sunshade purchased at the Nissan dealership, I'm still satisfied with my purchase. While the turning ratio could be better and the transmission shifting is inconsistent, I find the ride to be comfortable enough. The hands-free calling feature could be improved, and the seats could be more comfortable. Additionally, the black plastic at the tailgate is already showing signs of fading and warping. However, I'm still happy with my purchase and look forward to driving my Frontier for years to come.Overall, this truck may not be the best fit for heavy-duty work and prolonged use. I will need to keep an eye out for any potential issues that may arise. As of 10/10/19, I experienced a low knock and took it to the dealer. They discovered a broken head bolt that was done during assembly. The intake also needed replacing along with a couple of other items. Additionally, the A/C does not cool when in traffic, but can be used again after turning it off and waiting. The fit and finish of this truck could be improved. Currently, I have 7352 miles on this truck, which is relatively low for a 2017 model.
