Common Nissan Frontier problems
Based on complaints from owners of Nissan Frontier cars, several common problems have been reported:
- Timing Chain Problems: Some Nissan Frontier models may develop problems with the timing chains, resulting in a loud noise coming from the timing chain area. This noise is caused by excess slack in the secondary timing chains and is commonly observed around the 150,000-mile mark. If owners notice a whining or buzzing noise, it is advisable to have the pickup checked out.
- Rusty Distributor Shaft Bearing: Certain models of the Nissan Frontier are prone to rusty distributor shaft bearings. When this bearing rusts, it can seize, causing the engine to stall or fail to start. The typical fix for this issue involves replacing the distributor, with diagnostic costs averaging around $100. This problem can be critical as it affects the starting and running of the engine.
- Transmission Problems: The Nissan Frontier has been associated with transmission issues, particularly in the 2005 model year. The most common problem reported is the radiator causing transmission failure. This issue has an average cost to fix of $3,700 and occurs around 103,000 miles. Other related problems include radiator cracks leaking fluid into the transmission and coolant leaking into and damaging the transmission in subsequent model years.
These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by Nissan Frontier owners, ranging from sensor malfunctions to critical engine and transmission issues. Addressing these concerns promptly and through proper maintenance can help mitigate potential risks and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.
What problems does the Nissan Frontier have?
The Frontier can easily reach 100,000 to 200,000 on its odometer. The Nissan Frontier suffers from a few common problems, which include engine issues, defective airbags, and paint chipping.
Is the Nissan Frontier a reliable truck?
The auto repair database RepairPal gives the Nissan Frontier an overall 4 out of 5 for reliability, placing it at the top of the rankings for midsize pickups. However, there are several exceptions. Nissan Frontiers with automatic transmissions manufactured between 2005 and 2008 have a defective radiator design.
How many miles will a Nissan Frontier last?
200,000 miles
With proper care and routine maintenance, the latest generation of the Nissan Frontier has been built and designed to last over two decades, with many models able to last 200,000 miles and longer.
What are the cons of a Nissan Frontier?
Fuel economy of 18 mpg overall is not a standout among midsized pickup trucks. Handling is relatively responsive and secure, but the steering is too heavy at low speeds. Plus, the steering wheel lacks a telescope adjustment. The ride is stiff and choppy, though it's an improvement over the previous-generation Frontier.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-20
- VIN: 1N6ED1EK8NN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: We have had multiple occasions when the dashboard read as "System Fault"with multiple warning/indicator lights. 12/12/23, while backing out of a parking space at low speed. 9/12/2024 while at a Red Light, and lightly letting off the brake. 9/13/24 while driving 65 mph . An appt was requested at the dealership of purchase for 9/17/24. An email notification was also received from the truck stating that the ABS System may be malfunctioning. When the alert warning/indicator lights appear, the alert states on the dashboard "Warning" "System Fault" "See Owners Manual" . The system generated email states "Your vehicle's antilock braking system may require service". We only received one notification from the vehicle related to the 9/12/24 alert. On 9/19/24 the dealership could not replicate or find a code related to the ABS System Fault and we were encouraged to bring the vehicle back if it happened again so they could run the code. The dealership would take the vehicle for a longer drive on 9/20/24 to try to replicate the issue. At this point, we filed a complaint with the manufacturer, and have not heard directly from the dealership if they have been able to replicate the warning. The concern for safety is that since the vehicle alerting that the ABS system may be require attention, there may be other electrical issues with the vehicle, along with braking issue concern. There was one occasion on 1/21/2024 with a system error message stating "warning when Parked apply parking brake" the vehicle had just been turned on and put in reverse. There is a large safety concern as this vehicle has had other safety issues including a half latch (where the doors would not open from inside or outside, requiring exiting through alternate door, a parking pawl recall, and transmission issues that we've brought forward in our formal complaint to the manufacturer. Including "Tow" alarm notifications to strengthen the safety concern of electrical issues with this vehicle.

- VIN: 1N6ED1EJ7NN

- Summary: In December 2021, I purchased a 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-X. The vehicle comes with built-in navigation that, according to their website, should receive map updates quarterly. Since purchasing the vehicle, brand new, there have been no updates to the navigation system nor maps. I have gone back and forth with Nissan support and the dealership only to be told there are no updates. The maps are severely out of date, making a feature that many people rely on useless. Therefore, we are not getting full value of what we are paying for. This is a complaint for numerous Nissan owners as I've found in message board forums. Nissan is not addressing the problem and will not return my messages or address my concern directly.

This is my second Frontier Crew Cab. My first one, LE 4x4, was 10yrs old and I loved it. 64,000 miles in fabulous condition, until someone ran a red light and hit me head on. Insurance company gave me $17,000 for it, all true. So I knew I wanted another Frontier. Even though the mileage still stinks, it's what I wanted. Nissan fixed the turning radius problem of my 2008. The sunroof is nice and the dual climate control helps. I don't understand why there's no push-to-start yet. Ugh. I'm not a fan of leather seats, but i'll give it a whirl. If Nissan comes out with the European model in the US soon, I already have a buyer for this Frontier.

Your truck runs very well! It has great power and comfort, and has been reliable and fun to drive. I love the fender flares, front bars, side bars, and luggage rack - they make the truck look and feel rugged. As a proud owner of my first Nissan Truck, I highly recommend this truck to anyone looking for style, comfort, and reliability. I've only needed to get oil changes and a new air/gas filter installed in the past 5 years of ownership. Thank you for choosing Nissan!

Hi there! When I was looking to buy my first news vehicle, I knew I wanted a truck. I did a lot of research on recently produced 4x4 mid-size trucks, hoping to find an American-made one that fit my criteria. After all my research, I decided to buy a brand-new '07 Frontier with only 205 miles on it. I was spoiled for a few years owning a '78 International Scout II, but I've put my Nissan through the same paces and it's held up pretty well. At 37,000 miles, I did need to replace the clutch, and now at 78,000 miles, I'm needing to open the transfer case because the 4x4 won't disengage all the way. So, I'm a bit frustrated and wondering why these things are breaking. Can you help me out?

Vehicle year: 2019
I've driven many vehicles in the past, including a Dodge Ram 1500 when they first came out. However, I switched over to a smaller vehicle due to commuting and gas prices. Unfortunately, I totaled my Honda CRV, but I wanted to feel a heavy truck that made contact with the road from my steering wheel after this terrible ordeal. This truck does exactly what it says it'll do. If you're looking for a good old pickup truck at a reasonable price, this is your truck. Plus, my dogs love it, and I have five!

I purchased this truck from a Nissan Service Technician with 35,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I later discovered that the technician had installed some Firestone recalled tires on it, which caused a blowout at 60,000 miles even though the tread was at 60%. Additionally, the clutch began to act up, and after Nissan quoted me $2200 for the job, I decided to do it myself. When I dropped the transmission, about 2 quarts of water poured out because someone on the assembly line had completely sealed the bell housing. As a result, all the clutch components were rusted. While I don't recommend buying from Nissan, I do recommend Phoenix Friction. I replaced the flywheel, rear main seal, clutch, etc. If you have a Nissan manual transmission, I suggest crawling under it with a 1/4 drill bit and poking a hole in the 6:00 position in the bell housing to ensure it's clear. Other than those issues, this truck is by far the best 4-wheel drive vehicle I have driven. It's great for hunting and off-roading, and I can go where others fear to go. Although the 4-cylinder engine is underpowered, I don't mind taking my time going up hills. Lastly, the engineer at Nissan who positioned the PCV valve (which requires taking off most of the front engine components to change it) should be horsewhipped. It seems that all the headliners during those years failed, but I was able to re-upholster mine for about $50.00 and added some middle supports which cured the sagging. I also reduced the road noise by adding sound deadener in the doors and behind the headliners, which resulted in a 50% reduction in road noise.

I traded in my Nissan for a Ford Ranger Lariate with only 45,000 miles. All repair and service were done at the dealer. Although Nissan claimed that all rims corrode and brakes rust, I had to replace the brakes at 28,000 miles and the allow rims were corroded. After buying 3 trucks, 3 Maximas, and 1 Murano LE, which we traded in for a Lexus RX350, this is my last Nissan. The truck has a long turning radius and is hard to backup. I had to remove the rear headrest for better visibility. At around $37,000, the cost is way overpriced for what it offers. The sunroof has been a problem since day one, and it has been repaired several times. The rails and guides were replaced just out of warranty, and after several leaks, I had to pay for a repair to their repair. The overall quality is very poor, and the ride is rough. I am looking forward to the new Tacoma 2020.

Congratulations on your 4th Nissan Frontier purchase! It's great to hear that you were able to get a good deal on your 2013 model. Although it may not have all the bells and whistles, it's impressive that you were able to get such good gas mileage by shifting at 2200 rpm. It's unfortunate to hear about the cab leak in your previous truck, but it's good advice to check the seams before purchasing. It's also understandable that the manual transmission proved to be too much in Seattle traffic, but it's great that you were able to trade it in for a new Frontier with an automatic transmission. Thank you for sharing your experiences with Nissan trucks, it really gives insight into the quality control of the company.

My Frontier has less than 10,000 miles and the air conditioning is not functioning properly. Despite taking it to Peoria Nissan twice, they were unable to fix the issue. I contacted Nissan corporate to file a complaint, but they claimed that the new auto air conditioning is supposed to run like that. However, I strongly disagree and believe that the air conditioning is not working as it should. If anyone knows a lawyer we can contact, please let us know. Thank you.

We chose to purchase a Nissan because we believed in its superior quality and expected it to last us for at least a decade. Unfortunately, after only four years and almost paying off the truck's loan, we encountered a common manufacturer defect that other forums have reported. At high mileages, Frontiers may experience a break in the radiator, causing coolant to mix with transmission liquid. Despite being loyal Nissan customers and regularly servicing our truck, we were still affected by this issue. As a result, we had to pay approximately $6k, which was disappointing after taking such good care of our vehicle.
