Common Nissan Frontier problems

Based on complaints from owners of Nissan Frontier cars, several common problems have been reported:

  • Timing Chain Problems: Some Nissan Frontier models may develop problems with the timing chains, resulting in a loud noise coming from the timing chain area. This noise is caused by excess slack in the secondary timing chains and is commonly observed around the 150,000-mile mark. If owners notice a whining or buzzing noise, it is advisable to have the pickup checked out.
  • Rusty Distributor Shaft Bearing: Certain models of the Nissan Frontier are prone to rusty distributor shaft bearings. When this bearing rusts, it can seize, causing the engine to stall or fail to start. The typical fix for this issue involves replacing the distributor, with diagnostic costs averaging around $100. This problem can be critical as it affects the starting and running of the engine.
  • Transmission Problems: The Nissan Frontier has been associated with transmission issues, particularly in the 2005 model year. The most common problem reported is the radiator causing transmission failure. This issue has an average cost to fix of $3,700 and occurs around 103,000 miles. Other related problems include radiator cracks leaking fluid into the transmission and coolant leaking into and damaging the transmission in subsequent model years.

These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by Nissan Frontier owners, ranging from sensor malfunctions to critical engine and transmission issues. Addressing these concerns promptly and through proper maintenance can help mitigate potential risks and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

What problems does the Nissan Frontier have?

The Frontier can easily reach 100,000 to 200,000 on its odometer. The Nissan Frontier suffers from a few common problems, which include engine issues, defective airbags, and paint chipping.

Is the Nissan Frontier a reliable truck?

The auto repair database RepairPal gives the Nissan Frontier an overall 4 out of 5 for reliability, placing it at the top of the rankings for midsize pickups. However, there are several exceptions. Nissan Frontiers with automatic transmissions manufactured between 2005 and 2008 have a defective radiator design.

How many miles will a Nissan Frontier last?

200,000 miles

With proper care and routine maintenance, the latest generation of the Nissan Frontier has been built and designed to last over two decades, with many models able to last 200,000 miles and longer.

What are the cons of a Nissan Frontier?

Fuel economy of 18 mpg overall is not a standout among midsized pickup trucks. Handling is relatively responsive and secure, but the steering is too heavy at low speeds. Plus, the steering wheel lacks a telescope adjustment. The ride is stiff and choppy, though it's an improvement over the previous-generation Frontier.

  • VIN: 1N6ED1EK8NN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: We have had multiple occasions when the dashboard read as "System Fault"with multiple warning/indicator lights. 12/12/23, while backing out of a parking space at low speed. 9/12/2024 while at a Red Light, and lightly letting off the brake. 9/13/24 while driving 65 mph . An appt was requested at the dealership of purchase for 9/17/24. An email notification was also received from the truck stating that the ABS System may be malfunctioning. When the alert warning/indicator lights appear, the alert states on the dashboard "Warning" "System Fault" "See Owners Manual" . The system generated email states "Your vehicle's antilock braking system may require service". We only received one notification from the vehicle related to the 9/12/24 alert. On 9/19/24 the dealership could not replicate or find a code related to the ABS System Fault and we were encouraged to bring the vehicle back if it happened again so they could run the code. The dealership would take the vehicle for a longer drive on 9/20/24 to try to replicate the issue. At this point, we filed a complaint with the manufacturer, and have not heard directly from the dealership if they have been able to replicate the warning. The concern for safety is that since the vehicle alerting that the ABS system may be require attention, there may be other electrical issues with the vehicle, along with braking issue concern. There was one occasion on 1/21/2024 with a system error message stating "warning when Parked apply parking brake" the vehicle had just been turned on and put in reverse. There is a large safety concern as this vehicle has had other safety issues including a half latch (where the doors would not open from inside or outside, requiring exiting through alternate door, a parking pawl recall, and transmission issues that we've brought forward in our formal complaint to the manufacturer. Including "Tow" alarm notifications to strengthen the safety concern of electrical issues with this vehicle.

I have gone back and forth with Nissan support and the dealership only to be told there are no updates. The maps are severely out of date, making a feature that many people rely on useless. Therefore, we are not getting full value of what we are paying for. This is a complaint for numerous Nissan owners as I've found in message board forums. Latest negative Nissan Frontier car reviews

  1. Moriah Rippin 2025-11-29

    Vehicle year: 2022

I've been driving my ProX for 6 months. Although I initially loved it, I experienced some issues with the car. One day, it completely died leaving me stranded in a parking lot with multiple error codes and a locked out transmission, engine not starting. I took it to the dealer and they cleared the codes and got it running again, but unfortunately, I still experienced some issues such as ABS warning errors and glitchy performance from the infotainment system. Additionally, the passenger door power lock doesn't always engage/disengage correctly. Despite these issues, the truck handles well and is super comfortable on long drives. The engine has plenty of power for my needs and gas mileage is quite good for a truck (23 highway 19 around town). Adaptive cruise control works great on a flat freeway but slight grade changes cause the transmission to bump the rpms to ridiculous levels, like 5500rpm! Update 8/13/22: Upon purchase I loved my 2022 ProX. Powerful acceleration, solid handling, a thoughtfully designed and comfortable interior and handsome exterior styling made me feel like I had made the right decision. However, around 15k miles the issues began: glitchy infotainment system, intelligent key errors, phantom collision braking, a passenger door that properly locked only 50% of the time, drivers seat changing position by itself with the car off, complete breakdown with the inability to even shift to neutral for towing not once but twice leading to a transmission control module replacement at the dealer, and randomly honking horn when going over potholes. My partner remarked she didn't feel safe in the car, fearing we would be stranded somewhere if we strayed too far from the city. Yesterday I traded for a Tacoma, even taking a financial loss, however I feel it was worth it to get out from under the Frontier. I am confident the bugs will be worked out by 2023 or 2024 but for the 2022 buyer beware.

  2. Augustus Grant 2025-11-25

    Vehicle year: 2001

This is on a 2007 model. Site will not let me change the 2001 mistake. If you're considering purchasing this vehicle, please be aware that there have been reports of leaks into the transmission. Unfortunately, for most people, the problems do not normally start until over 90,000 miles, and then there is no help from the dealer/company. However, I hope this information helps you make an informed decision. Thank you for considering my experience.

  3. Gunner Wisoky 2025-11-24

    Vehicle year: 2017

I would like to share my experience with my Nissan Frontier pickup. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with it in the less than 2 years that I have owned it. It has been in the shop for over 30 days and has stranded us twice on road trips, requiring towing. The catalytic converters have had to be replaced 3 times, and once they even had to replace all four. I requested Nissan to replace the truck under the 'lemon laws', but unfortunately, they denied my request. However, I must say that our local dealership has been great throughout this process. Although I am disappointed with the product, I still appreciate the service provided by the dealership. My family has owned 6 Nissans in the past, but unfortunately, this experience has left a bad taste in my mouth. I would advise anyone to do their research before purchasing a Nissan. Thank you for taking the time to read my experience.

Pros: The truck has a handsome look and is equipped with a famously reliable 4-cylinder engine. It also provides a nice ride, especially with good replacement tires. However, there are some cons to consider. The automatic transmission has low horsepower and towing capacity, and the fuel mileage is unimpressive. Additionally, the OEM tires create excessive road noise and there are lots of irritating rattles at 40,000 miles.

I traded in my Nissan for a Ford Ranger Lariate with only 45,000 miles. All repair and service were done at the dealer. Although Nissan claimed that all rims corrode and brakes rust, I had to replace the brakes at 28,000 miles and the allow rims were corroded. After buying 3 trucks, 3 Maximas, and 1 Murano LE, which we traded in for a Lexus RX350, this is my last Nissan. The truck has a long turning radius and is hard to backup. I had to remove the rear headrest for better visibility. At around $37,000, the cost is way overpriced for what it offers. The sunroof has been a problem since day one, and it has been repaired several times. The rails and guides were replaced just out of warranty, and after several leaks, I had to pay for a repair to their repair. The overall quality is very poor, and the ride is rough. I am looking forward to the new Tacoma 2020.

After considering the new Ranger, the Colorado, and a few different Tacoma’s, I ultimately chose the Frontier. Despite the negative comments from some 'expert' reviews, I found the simplicity of my truck to be its most appealing feature. The truck handles well, has plenty of power, and is surprisingly comfortable. For the price, it's unbeatable. Although I haven’t had the chance to go off-road or tow yet, I have no doubts that it will perform well. The technology is simple and straightforward to set up, and the sound system is outstanding. While the fuel economy could be better (around 17 mpg combined), I'm still happy with my purchase. I've been using it as my daily driver and it's been very satisfying during my daily commute. I have no issues with the 'dated' feel that some reviews mention. **UPDATE 2023** I'm happy to report that my Frontier is still going strong with zero issues. I've taken it on some tough trails and towed around 6,000lbs up the coast. It's been a reliable daily driver with only standard maintenance required.

Hey there! So, I recently rented a 2018 pro4x and took it off-roading in Anza-Borrego state park in southern California. Let me tell you, it was amazing! I was thoroughly impressed with how well it performed. I was originally looking at getting a Wrangler or a ZR2, but their prices are just not justifiable for 90% of the market. My uncle used to own a 1990 Nissan Hardbody V6 with the Mickey Thomson off-road package, and he took that little truck everywhere. It was such a shame when it was totaled in a 5-car pile-up on the freeway at 405,000 miles. Nissan builds reliable trucks at an affordable price, something that Jeep and GM can't seem to do anymore. That's why I jumped at the chance to get a pro4x with the luxury package the second it went on sale. If you're not too concerned about having all the latest and greatest electronics, then an off-roader like this is definitely worth considering!

I recently purchased a new 4X4 Frontier SL crew cab with every available option, including the long bed and 4.0L engine. After considering the new Chevy/GMC and Toyota Tacoma, I ultimately chose the 2015 Frontier SL 4X4 LB crew cab. This mid-size pickup is incredibly reliable and boasts a rock-solid frame. The leather interior, heated seats, and outstanding stereo with navigation make for a comfortable and enjoyable ride. While the gas mileage could be better, the pricing and reliability of this pickup make it an easy choice. Additionally, the Frontier's 4 wheel disc brakes and adjustable tie-down system make it a practical choice for hauling cargo. Overall, I highly recommend this mid-size pickup.

Despite the lackluster magazine reviews, I am thoroughly impressed with my fleet of these trucks. They seemed to be the best value for the money, and unlike the Toyotas, they can be had for around $4000 less than MSRP. I am so satisfied with them that I plan to purchase another fleet of the same truck in three years.
