Common Nissan Frontier problems

Based on complaints from owners of Nissan Frontier cars, several common problems have been reported:

  • Timing Chain Problems: Some Nissan Frontier models may develop problems with the timing chains, resulting in a loud noise coming from the timing chain area. This noise is caused by excess slack in the secondary timing chains and is commonly observed around the 150,000-mile mark. If owners notice a whining or buzzing noise, it is advisable to have the pickup checked out.
  • Rusty Distributor Shaft Bearing: Certain models of the Nissan Frontier are prone to rusty distributor shaft bearings. When this bearing rusts, it can seize, causing the engine to stall or fail to start. The typical fix for this issue involves replacing the distributor, with diagnostic costs averaging around $100. This problem can be critical as it affects the starting and running of the engine.
  • Transmission Problems: The Nissan Frontier has been associated with transmission issues, particularly in the 2005 model year. The most common problem reported is the radiator causing transmission failure. This issue has an average cost to fix of $3,700 and occurs around 103,000 miles. Other related problems include radiator cracks leaking fluid into the transmission and coolant leaking into and damaging the transmission in subsequent model years.

These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by Nissan Frontier owners, ranging from sensor malfunctions to critical engine and transmission issues. Addressing these concerns promptly and through proper maintenance can help mitigate potential risks and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

What problems does the Nissan Frontier have?

The Frontier can easily reach 100,000 to 200,000 on its odometer. The Nissan Frontier suffers from a few common problems, which include engine issues, defective airbags, and paint chipping.

Is the Nissan Frontier a reliable truck?

The auto repair database RepairPal gives the Nissan Frontier an overall 4 out of 5 for reliability, placing it at the top of the rankings for midsize pickups. However, there are several exceptions. Nissan Frontiers with automatic transmissions manufactured between 2005 and 2008 have a defective radiator design.

How many miles will a Nissan Frontier last?

200,000 miles

With proper care and routine maintenance, the latest generation of the Nissan Frontier has been built and designed to last over two decades, with many models able to last 200,000 miles and longer.

What are the cons of a Nissan Frontier?

Fuel economy of 18 mpg overall is not a standout among midsized pickup trucks. Handling is relatively responsive and secure, but the steering is too heavy at low speeds. Plus, the steering wheel lacks a telescope adjustment. The ride is stiff and choppy, though it's an improvement over the previous-generation Frontier.

  • VIN: 1N6ED1EK8NN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: We have had multiple occasions when the dashboard read as "System Fault"with multiple warning/indicator lights. 12/12/23, while backing out of a parking space at low speed. 9/12/2024 while at a Red Light, and lightly letting off the brake. 9/13/24 while driving 65 mph . An appt was requested at the dealership of purchase for 9/17/24. An email notification was also received from the truck stating that the ABS System may be malfunctioning. When the alert warning/indicator lights appear, the alert states on the dashboard "Warning" "System Fault" "See Owners Manual" . The system generated email states "Your vehicle's antilock braking system may require service". We only received one notification from the vehicle related to the 9/12/24 alert. On 9/19/24 the dealership could not replicate or find a code related to the ABS System Fault and we were encouraged to bring the vehicle back if it happened again so they could run the code. The dealership would take the vehicle for a longer drive on 9/20/24 to try to replicate the issue. At this point, we filed a complaint with the manufacturer, and have not heard directly from the dealership if they have been able to replicate the warning. The concern for safety is that since the vehicle alerting that the ABS system may be require attention, there may be other electrical issues with the vehicle, along with braking issue concern. There was one occasion on 1/21/2024 with a system error message stating "warning when Parked apply parking brake" the vehicle had just been turned on and put in reverse. There is a large safety concern as this vehicle has had other safety issues including a half latch (where the doors would not open from inside or outside, requiring exiting through alternate door, a parking pawl recall, and transmission issues that we've brought forward in our formal complaint to the manufacturer. Including "Tow" alarm notifications to strengthen the safety concern of electrical issues with this vehicle.

I have gone back and forth with Nissan support and the dealership only to be told there are no updates. The maps are severely out of date, making a feature that many people rely on useless. Latest negative Nissan Frontier car reviews

  1. Paxton Gislason 2024-11-29

    Vehicle year: 2002

I have owned three Frontiers, but unfortunately, I have experienced a number of issues with them. Despite my disappointment, I am confident in my decision to trade in my current Frontier and will be exploring other options in the future.

  2. Trevion Nienow 2024-11-28

    Vehicle year: 2022

This truck has good handling and decent fuel mileage, but its quality is not impressive. There have been issues with warning lights and intermittent electrical problems, as well as recalls for fogging headlights and taillights, transfer case seal leaks, exhaust rust, and brake pulse. With only 32000 kms, I would recommend considering a Toyota or GM truck instead. This truck may not hold up to heavy use.

  3. Sheldon Hammes 2024-11-23

    Vehicle year: 2007

The Frontier King Cab is a decent truck, but it does have some flaws that are worth noting. If you plan on having passengers in the back, I would recommend going with the Crew Cab instead. While the interior may look a bit cheap, it's important to remember that this is a truck. One minor issue I've noticed is that the clock radio can be difficult to read in bright sunlight. Additionally, I have heard some noise coming from under the dashboard and when spinning the tires, but it's not a major concern. The truck's wide turn radius can be a bit of a hassle, but overall it's a nice vehicle. The fuel mileage could be better for a 6 cylinder engine, and my brakes tend to squeak quite a bit.

  4. Brendan Towne 2024-11-12

    Vehicle year: 1999

Your 1998 Frontier has been a very reliable truck, even though the nearest Nissan dealer is 87 miles away and you have never had to tow it! The Nissan plastic decal on the tailgate refused to stay on after two tries at dealership gluing. You finally had them take it off and buff the paint under it (at your expense!). The radio light is starting to go on and off. You have yet to take it off-road, but it's nice to know the four-wheel is there, especially in Montana! Make sure that you have a person in the know wire yours for a trailer! You feel that you got your money's worth. Not great gas mileage - but better than a V-8.

  5. Rolando Ullrich 2024-11-09

    Vehicle year: 2006

I recently purchased a 2006 truck with 66,500 miles. During the test drive, everything seemed fine until about 10 miles in when the gas gauge appeared to be empty and the check engine light came on. I quickly pulled into a gas station and put in $10, only to find that the gas gauge indicator showed 3/4 full. When I returned the truck, the owner mentioned that he had been having that issue for approximately 3 years and had heard there might be a recall. The next day, I verified the error code and found the recall on the internet. I contacted my local Nissan dealer, but unfortunately, I was informed that my truck did not have this recall, even though the recall outlined was exactly the problem. I had the recall fixed, which cost me $500 out of pocket. After the service, the manager suggested that I replace my radiator because the coolant and transmission fluid could leak and cause transmission failure. I bought a new radiator and I am in the process of replacing it. Despite these issues, my family has been loyal to Nissan for a long time, but we are now considering other options. My wife currently drives a Nissan, but it won't last long in our driveway. It's a shame because I was about to consider buying the new Nissan Titan Diesel.

I recently traded in my 2017 Nissan Titan for my fourth Frontier, an SV Crew Cab 4x4. I have always been a fan of the Frontier and have never had any problems with the ones I've owned. I'm not an expert and I don't get paid for reviews, but I can confidently say that I love the Nissan Frontier. It handles well, is fun to drive, and is quick. Despite having the same body style since 2006, it remains reliable and even has Bluetooth for my phone. I am absolutely in love with my new 2021 Nissan SV 4X4 and would give it 5 stars without hesitation. I've even owned two Datsuns before they changed their name.

We purchased our Frontier during the recession when dealer inventories were sparse. We needed to replace an industrial model S-10 and this truck came loaded with options. In the 9 years since, it has only required its recommended maintenance and a front brake repair. Everything still works perfectly. Although it was very competitively priced as a new truck, our primary issue with it is its unwieldy handling in town. However, on other roads it performs well and has been our go-to car for long trips since we bought it. Until recently, it consistently averaged nearly 20 mpg. We have even used it for heavy hauling on occasion without any struggling or deterioration in its handling.

My pickup was incredibly reliable, which is typical of Nissan. This was my second Nissan, and I never had a problem with either. After over three years, I have not had to have any repairs done to my Frontier whatsoever. I'm thinking of trading it in for a Titan only because I want more space.

So far, I've been really happy with my '07 Frontier. It has a quiet ride, zippy performance, and a fairly comfortable driving position. I have had only one recurring problem, which is a malfunctioning tire pressure sensor. However, it was finally fixed after the third visit to the dealer. I owned a comparable Tacoma before this truck, but I like my Nissan far better.
