Common Nissan Frontier problems
Based on complaints from owners of Nissan Frontier cars, several common problems have been reported:
- Timing Chain Problems: Some Nissan Frontier models may develop problems with the timing chains, resulting in a loud noise coming from the timing chain area. This noise is caused by excess slack in the secondary timing chains and is commonly observed around the 150,000-mile mark. If owners notice a whining or buzzing noise, it is advisable to have the pickup checked out.
- Rusty Distributor Shaft Bearing: Certain models of the Nissan Frontier are prone to rusty distributor shaft bearings. When this bearing rusts, it can seize, causing the engine to stall or fail to start. The typical fix for this issue involves replacing the distributor, with diagnostic costs averaging around $100. This problem can be critical as it affects the starting and running of the engine.
- Transmission Problems: The Nissan Frontier has been associated with transmission issues, particularly in the 2005 model year. The most common problem reported is the radiator causing transmission failure. This issue has an average cost to fix of $3,700 and occurs around 103,000 miles. Other related problems include radiator cracks leaking fluid into the transmission and coolant leaking into and damaging the transmission in subsequent model years.
These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by Nissan Frontier owners, ranging from sensor malfunctions to critical engine and transmission issues. Addressing these concerns promptly and through proper maintenance can help mitigate potential risks and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.
What problems does the Nissan Frontier have?
The Frontier can easily reach 100,000 to 200,000 on its odometer. The Nissan Frontier suffers from a few common problems, which include engine issues, defective airbags, and paint chipping.
Is the Nissan Frontier a reliable truck?
The auto repair database RepairPal gives the Nissan Frontier an overall 4 out of 5 for reliability, placing it at the top of the rankings for midsize pickups. However, there are several exceptions. Nissan Frontiers with automatic transmissions manufactured between 2005 and 2008 have a defective radiator design.
How many miles will a Nissan Frontier last?
200,000 miles
With proper care and routine maintenance, the latest generation of the Nissan Frontier has been built and designed to last over two decades, with many models able to last 200,000 miles and longer.
What are the cons of a Nissan Frontier?
Fuel economy of 18 mpg overall is not a standout among midsized pickup trucks. Handling is relatively responsive and secure, but the steering is too heavy at low speeds. Plus, the steering wheel lacks a telescope adjustment. The ride is stiff and choppy, though it's an improvement over the previous-generation Frontier.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-20
- VIN: 1N6ED1EK8NN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: We have had multiple occasions when the dashboard read as "System Fault"with multiple warning/indicator lights. 12/12/23, while backing out of a parking space at low speed. 9/12/2024 while at a Red Light, and lightly letting off the brake. 9/13/24 while driving 65 mph . An appt was requested at the dealership of purchase for 9/17/24. An email notification was also received from the truck stating that the ABS System may be malfunctioning. When the alert warning/indicator lights appear, the alert states on the dashboard "Warning" "System Fault" "See Owners Manual" . The system generated email states "Your vehicle's antilock braking system may require service". We only received one notification from the vehicle related to the 9/12/24 alert. On 9/19/24 the dealership could not replicate or find a code related to the ABS System Fault and we were encouraged to bring the vehicle back if it happened again so they could run the code. The dealership would take the vehicle for a longer drive on 9/20/24 to try to replicate the issue. At this point, we filed a complaint with the manufacturer, and have not heard directly from the dealership if they have been able to replicate the warning. The concern for safety is that since the vehicle alerting that the ABS system may be require attention, there may be other electrical issues with the vehicle, along with braking issue concern. There was one occasion on 1/21/2024 with a system error message stating "warning when Parked apply parking brake" the vehicle had just been turned on and put in reverse. There is a large safety concern as this vehicle has had other safety issues including a half latch (where the doors would not open from inside or outside, requiring exiting through alternate door, a parking pawl recall, and transmission issues that we've brought forward in our formal complaint to the manufacturer. Including "Tow" alarm notifications to strengthen the safety concern of electrical issues with this vehicle.

- Date Complaint: 2024-08-18
- VIN: 1N6ED1EJ7NN
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: In December 2021, I purchased a 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-X. The vehicle comes with built-in navigation that, according to their website, should receive map updates quarterly. Since purchasing the vehicle, brand new, there have been no updates to the navigation system nor maps. I have gone back and forth with Nissan support and the dealership only to be told there are no updates. The maps are severely out of date, making a feature that many people rely on useless. Therefore, we are not getting full value of what we are paying for. This is a complaint for numerous Nissan owners as I've found in message board forums. Nissan is not addressing the problem and will not return my messages or address my concern directly.

This is a great mid-size pickup truck that can easily haul anything a larger truck could. The towing capacity is excellent! I have personally towed fully loaded 6 x 12 foot U-haul trailers from my main home to my second home (about 650 miles one way) with both my current 2016 and my previous 2012 models of the same truck. I had no issues going up long grades or keeping up with traffic. The vehicle handles well, especially in town, and parking is a breeze. It even fits in my garage! The interior trim is what you would expect from a utility type vehicle, but I installed a bed cover and liner, as well as Weathertech floor mats to protect things. The controls work as expected and are arranged logically. Although the Bluetooth interface with my phone needs some serious work (it always sends

Hi there! I've been driving my truck for seven months now and it's been great as my daily driver. So far, I've put a little over 2,000 miles on it and it's been getting a steady 18 mpg. It handles pretty well around town and on the highway, but you do have to pay attention to it as it tends to drift. Steering and turning the Frontier can be a bit of a job, but I installed a spinner ball steering assist on the steering wheel and it seems to help. I really like the 4.0L V6 power, although I was a bit disappointed that it didn't come with a CD player or XM satellite. However, neither of those are a big must-have for me since I use a USB drive with a lot of downloaded music on it. The ride is okay, but the driver's seat is a bit uncomfortable and the lack of a right-side armrest for the driver is an extremely poor design feature by Nissan. Overall, I like Nissan's reputation for dependability and this Frontier fits my needs just fine. Although I don't think I'd buy another Frontier unless they make some much-needed changes and improvements to this vehicle.

Vehicle year: 2020
I found some reviews that mentioned the lack of technology and not-so-great gas mileage when purchasing this vehicle. However, I have to say that my experience has been quite different. In fact, the gas mileage is much better than any Chevy, Ford, or Dodge I've ever owned, averaging at 23. I'm extremely pleased with the performance of this 4-cylinder vehicle, as it has plenty of power and get-up-and-go for my needs. It's also the perfect tow vehicle for our motorhome. The driving experience is comfortable, especially for someone over 6 feet tall, and everything within the cab is easily accessible. The body lines are fantastic, too! I have to give a shoutout to Benton Nissan of Bessemer for being an awesome dealership!

This truck is amazing! It has been running just as well as the day I bought it and has shown no signs of wear and tear. Even during the worst ice storm my area has ever seen last year, the truck was able to power through and overcome every obstacle in its way. Even after being hit by a drunk driver going 50mph, the truck started right up and got me home safely. When I took it to be repaired, we found out that the leaf springs had blown apart, but even then, it still managed to get me home. I absolutely adore this truck and if it ever does finally give out on me, I will definitely be buying another one.

This is a review of the drive train only for the updated Nissan Frontier Pro 4X. The 2022 Frontier has seen many improvements, but the engine and transmission remain the same as the recent 2021 upgrade. The engine is a slight upgrade over the 4.0 L, 6 cylinder, providing more readily available horsepower, a slight improvement in gas mileage, and added responsiveness. You'll definitely enjoy that. However, the transmission is a different story. There seems to be a lot of pressure on all companies to increase their automatic transmissions to 8 or 9 speeds and to alter the computer shift mapping to move the car into as high a gear as possible. They clearly went too far and have developed issues. The car will go to the highest gear, whether it drives well at that gear or not. You'll also find that it won't properly downshift to first gear when you come to a stop sign (or downshift when driving slowly). I've found myself driving with manual mode too often to compensate. While many people may like the transmission, I'm not a fan of 9 speeds. I believe 7 with better downshifting would be better.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car that I bought brand new in 2006, which was actually a 2005 model. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it over the years, including problems with the fuel sending unit, O2 sensors, and starter. Living in California, I recently had to get it smogged, which cost me $1,970.00. On top of that, I had to replace the radiator myself for around $300.00 because it was leaking fluid into the transmission. Now that I've had it smogged and can drive it to have the transmission checked, I found out that it needs to be rebuilt, which will cost a minimum of $2,400.00. All in all, it's been a bit of a costly experience, with almost $6,000 spent so far and barely 100,000 miles on the car. Unfortunately, both the dealer and Nissan USA haven't been very helpful with these issues. Thanks for listening!

I bought this truck because I needed an inexpensive 4wd and the ability to pack a couple of kids in the back when necessary. I have had numerous other Japanese vehicles over the years and have always been impressed with their quality, reliability, and driving satisfaction. However, I have to say that the Nissan is a step below the others. I have also experienced some issues such as the radio light going out (a common problem), driveability problems in damp weather, a 4wd hub issue twice, poor air conditioning, squeaks and rattles, and it's not very comfortable. Additionally, the mileage is poor even with the 5-speed. On the plus side, the paint is good and it has never stranded me. For what I paid, it has probably been a decent vehicle. Would I buy another? Probably not unless the price was a steal.

I strongly advise against purchasing these products as they have proven to be of poor quality. The sensors require frequent replacement and the transmission is prone to failure due to the substandard radiator. Unfortunately, Nissan has not taken any responsibility for these issues. As a result of my negative experience, I have returned to Toyota and will not be purchasing Nissan products in the future. It is worth noting that my truck was involved in an accident and was deemed a total loss.

Vehicle year: 1998
This truck has had persistent mechanical issues since its purchase in 2002 with 30,000 miles. The engine and axle oil leak were fixed under warranty, but the windshield wiper motor failed during a thunderstorm in a remote location, leaving me without wipers. Additionally, the clutch motor has required two repairs within six months, and the clutch itself is expensive to fix due to its location. These recurring problems have made this truck unreliable.
