Common 2003 Nissan Frontier problems

The 2003 Nissan Frontier has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. One of the most significant problems is the steering shaft failure recall, which affects certain model year 2002-2004 Frontier and Xterra vehicles manufactured from July 9, 2001, through October 20, 2004, and January 6, 2005, respectively. Over time, corrosion may form in the lower steering column joint, limiting movement and creating excessive load on the lower steering column shaft. If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, it may lead to cracking of the shaft during low-speed maneuvers that require large steering inputs, potentially causing loss of steering control and increasing the risk of a crash. Nissan plans to begin owner notification in early December once replacement parts are available, and owners will be asked to bring their vehicles to the dealer to have the new parts installed free of charge.

Another common problem with the 2003 Nissan Frontier is the sunroof rattles and explodes issue, which affects certain Nissan and Infiniti models with factory-installed sunroofs made of tempered glass. The lawsuit alleges that these sunroofs are at risk of exploding without warning, leaving occupants a bundle of nerves if the glass shatters while driving. Nissan plans to replace the sunroof glass with laminated glass on affected vehicles.

The 2003 Nissan Frontier has also been reported to have problems with the EVAP system, causing gas splash back at the pump. This issue is likely due to a clog in the EVAP system, which can be frustrating for owners.

In addition to these specific problems, the 2003 Nissan Frontier has also been reported to have issues with the transmission, engine, electrical system, fuel system, and steering. The transmission has been reported to have nine complaints, the engine has eight complaints, the electrical system has eight complaints, the fuel system has eight complaints, and the steering has four complaints. These issues can range from minor annoyances to significant problems that can affect the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

In conclusion, the 2003 Nissan Frontier has several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These problems include the steering shaft failure recall, sunroof rattles and explodes issue, and problems with the EVAP system, transmission, engine, electrical system, fuel system, and steering. Owners of the 2003 Nissan Frontier should be aware of these issues and take appropriate action to address them, such as bringing their vehicles to the dealer for repairs or replacement parts.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-13
  • VIN: 1N6MD27Y63C
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I was driving and my truck started drifting and I felt like I was losing control. Could of caused a very serious and dangerous accident - scared me to death, had just bought this Nissan, and love the brand. Had great tires and brakes just completely done. Brought it to my mechanic and he put it up on the hoist. Frame almost completely rusted out and through in many spots. They were surprised it did not completely come apart! Extremely dangerous and they suspect like Toyota that maybe part of a NHTSA recall. I just checked and did not find one, but there should be, how many other un-safe Frontiers are out there be driven every day by the public. I can send pictures if needed, just need to ask mechanic to put back up on hoist, as he would not let me drive the car and it is still there. Horrific danger!

SUSPENSION,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-10-11
  • VIN: 1N6MD27Y03C
  • Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I HEARD A SUDDEN THUD AND THEN A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR END AS IF A BRAKE HAD HUNG UP,METAL TO METAL.WHEN I EXITED THE VEHICLE THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND A VERY STRONG SMELL OF OVERHEATING OF THE BRAKES OR METAL AND FLUID.UPON PULLING THE WHEELS,OUR COMPANY MECHANIC FOUND NOTHING OF THE SORT TO BE WRONG. I CALLED A FRIEND TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TRAILER-ED TO MONRO MUFFLER AND BRAKE IN MANSFIELD PA,WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THE BEARINGS HAD FAILED IN THE REARS,BOTH INNER AND OUTER. NISSAN USA DETERMINED THAT MY VIN # DID NOT FALL INTO THE RECALL CAMPAIGN EVEN THOUGH IT FELL WITHIN THE SAME MAKE,MODEL AND YEAR WITHIN RECALL CAMPAIGN #02V299000! NISSAN ADVISED ME TO TAKE THE TRUCK TO WILLIAMS NISSAN IN SAYRE PA AND HAVE IT DIAGNOSED THERE. I HAD PREVIOUSLY CALLED THEM BEFORE CONTACTING NISSAN USA WHERE THEY HAD ALREADY ADVISED ME OF THE VIN # NOT BEING WITHIN THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT AN ACCIDENT COULD HAVE OCCURRED IF NOT A FIRE OR BOTH! THIS CAME WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING IN THE VERY EARLY MORNING ON MY WAY TO WORK. I WOULD ADVISE ANYONE WHO OWNS THESE MAKE,MODEL AND YEARS TO HAVE THIS CHECKED AND REPAIRED. I CANNOT BELIEVE NISSAN WOULD NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY IN SUCH AN EXACT CASE AS THIS PARTICULAR RECALL STATES. IN ESSENCE THIS DOES START WITH THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM AND SEALS AS MONRO TOLD ME THE SEALS HAD FAILED! *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-01-09
  • VIN: 1N6ED27Y13C
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: BOUGHT TRUCK NEW IN 2003 ORIGINAL OWNER. AT 36433 MILES CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WAS TOLD FUEL TANK WAS RUSTED OUT NEEDED NEW TANK WHICH WAS REPLACED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY. AT 91989 MILES CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AGAIN COMES ON. WAS TOLD FUEL TANK/EVAP CANISTER VALVE/EVAP CONTROL SYSTEM NEEDED REPLACED AGAIN. AGAIN DONE UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY. AT 120,608 MILES (28589 MILES LATER) CHECK ENGINE CAME ON AGAIN. TOOK TO NISSAN DEALER AGAIN FOR DIAGNOSTIC CHECK AND AM TOLD THAT THERE IS CORROSION AGAIN ON THE FUEL TANK AROUND SENDING UNIT. MAY NEED ANOTHER FUEL TANK, BUT NEED TO DROP TANK AND SEE HOW BAD IT IS. EXTENDED WARRANTY IS EXPIRED AT THIS POINT AND THE CHARGE WOULD BE UP TO ME. I WAS TRYING TO WORK WITH NISSAN TO REPLACE THIS TANK IF NEED BE. I UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS AN OLDER TRUCK, BUT IT IS GARAGE KEPT AND NEVER OFF ROAD IN EXCELLENT SHAPE. THEY WANT ME TO TAKE IT AND HAVE THE TANK DROPPED AT MY EXPENSE. IF IT TURNS OUT TO BE THE TANK THEY WILL THEN DECIDE WHAT THEY MIGHT PAY IF ANY. THEY ARE CALLING IT A GOOD WILL DECISION. I NEED A DEFINITE ANSWER FROM THEM ON HOW MUCH THEY WILL PAY BEFORE I DO THIS AND THEY WON'T DO THAT. MY THEORY IS THAT IF THIS TURNS OUT TO BE YET ANOTHER RUSTED FUEL TANK WHICH WILL MAKE THE FOURTH ONE THEY SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THESE. I HAVE TWO OTHER FRIENDS WITH NISSAN FRONTIERS 2002, AND 2003 WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED PROBLEM FOR I HAVE GOOGLED THIS AND FOUND THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT RUSTED FUEL TANKS ON THESE YEARS AND MAKE OF NISSAN. I AM A 66 YEAR OLD MAN, AND HAVE NEVER IN ALL MY YEARS OF OWNING AN AUTOMOBILE EVER HAD TO REPLACE A FUEL TANK BECAUSE IT WAS RUSTED OUT, LET ALONE 4 OF THEM. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE, AND NISSAN NEEDS TO STEP UP AND ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM ONCE AND FOR ALL. *TR

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-06-28
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I HAVE JUST OVER 100,000 MILES ON MY 2003 TRUCK. I HAVE BEEN FIGHTING RUST ISSUES ALL OVER THE RIG FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS. I WASH AND CLEAN MY TRUCK EACH WEEK AND POLISH TWICE A YEAR. I DO LIVE NEAR THE BEACH, BUT I UNDERSTAND THIS, AND BEING A AIRCRAFT MECHANIC BY TRADE, WORKING WITH AIRCRAFT ON SHIPS AT SEA, KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY SERVICE MY EQUIPMENT. THE RUST COMES OUT UNDER THE PAINT, ALONG THE REAR CAB BRAKE LIGHT, AND ALONG THE FRONT WIND SHIELD, PASSENGER SIDE. THE RIG HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND SINCE I'M RETIRED AND I BOUGHT THE TRUCK NEW, I HAVE TAKEN GOOD CARE OF IT. NISSAN REFUSES TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE, AND I BELIEVE THE PAINT SYSTEM THEY USE NEEDS SERIOUS UP GRADING. *TR

  • Summary: MY VEHICLE FUEL PUMP FAILED AND NEARLY CAUSED ME TO CRASH. I HAVE LOCATED NHTSA # 04V230000 THAT NOTES A RECALL. THE DEALER SAYS THAT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT PART OF THE FAULTY PUMPS THAT WERE PLACED IN THE VEHICLES. I WANT TO ADD THAT THESE OTHER FUEL PUMPS ARE ALSO NO GOOD. I AM IN THE COAST GUARD AND MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN NEAR THE SALTY OCEAN AIR SINCE I'VE OWNED IT (THE SAME REASON FOR THE CORROSION ON THE OTHER PUMPS). THERE SHOULD ALSO BE A RECALL FOR THESE PUMPS. *TR

  • Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: WHEELS:RIM
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A V6 ENGINE, AN INCORRECT SIZE WHEEL RIM FOR THE SPARE TIRE WAS PROVIDED IN THESE VEHICLES. THE WHEEL RIM DOES NOT FIT PROPERLY AS A REPLACEMENT FOR A FRONT WHEEL.
  • Consequence: WHEN INSTALLED ON THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE, THE WHEEL RIM WILL CONTACT THE BRAKE CALIPER CAUSING A LOUD RUBBING NOISE AND COULD RESULT IN WEAR ON THE CALIPER AND/OR WHEEL RIM IF DRIVING CONTINUES. CONTINUED USAGE OF THE SPARE TIRE WHEEL AT THE FRONT LOCATION CAN ALSO RESULT IN LOOSENING OF THE LUG NUTS AND DETERIORATION IN BRAKING PERFORMANCE. THIS COULD EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY TO SEPARATE FORM THE VEHICLE AND RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SPARE TIRE WHEEL RIM WITH A NEW ONE, AND REMOUNT THE SPARE TIRE ON IT. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JANUARY 13, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Negative 2003 Nissan Frontier car reviews

I'm a bit disappointed with how thirsty this truck is. Currently, I'm only averaging around 13.5mpg, which is lower than my previous V8 4wd Tundra. Even when driving conservatively, I was able to average 15mpg on trips with my old truck. It's surprising that this smaller truck consumes more gas than a bigger V8 truck. On my recent trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles, I had to fill up three times. Additionally, I found the Rockford Fosgate sound system to be underwhelming. I ended up adding another amp and replacing the weak subwoofer with better aftermarket items.

Comfort is lacking. Front seats arelousy. Rear seat needs more room. Soundsystem sounds cheap. At first I likedthe ride, but once you inflate the tiresto an appropriate level the ride goesall jiggly on you due to chassisflimsiness. Replaced shocks with decentones which helped but still sucks.Nissan can't fix driveshaft issue after3 tries, common problem I'm told. Runsout of breath on the frreway.

Dumped all auto tranny fluid at 1507 miles due to wedge left in cooler line at factory. Nissan's response was to refill the tranny and suggested purchasing an extended warranty. However, I believe that Nissan should have taken responsibility for their mistake and provided better customer service. Maybe next time, I'll consider buying a Tacoma instead.

For 16 years, I have been driving two NISSAN Trucks - an '84 that I bought used in '89 and a '95 that I bought new. This is my third truck and I have not encountered any problems that were not due to normal wear and tear such as brakes, tires, and clutch. The maintenance costs have been extremely low. Additionally, this truck has many more creature comforts and storage options compared to my past trucks!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2003 Frontier V6. I bought it back in 2005 with only 28,000 miles on it, and now, in 2021, it has over 200,000 miles and is still going strong! This truck has been an absolute workhorse for me. I've hauled trailers here and there, and the V6 engine has been a huge help. While the gas mileage is okay, it's not the best when hauling a trailer. I did have to replace the timing belts and water pump around 100,000 miles, and then again around 170,000 miles. I've also had to make some small repairs here and there, like fixing the valve seals when they started leaking around 170,000 miles. Now, at 200,000 miles, the catalytic converters are starting to go bad, but the truck still runs. Overall, I would give this truck 4-5 stars. The V6 engine gives you some great horsepower when you need it on the highway, and it's been a reliable vehicle for me. While I did end up getting a Dodge 3500 dually, I still have my Nissan for zipping around town and taking my kayaks to the river. Mine is the Desert Runner V6, and while it doesn't have 4x4, it's still a great truck for my needs.

This truck is a great choice for young consumers who are looking for a comfortable and stylish ride. I really appreciate the way the Frontier handles on gravel roads - it's truly impressive. The interior design is eye-catching and the sound system is top-notch. I especially love the power of the supercharger - it really sets my Frontier apart from the rest.

I bought this truck with 54K miles on it and I fell in love with it. It took me a few months to get used to it since I had previously owned a 95 S-10, but now that I have been driving it for several months, I think it's great. The mileage is around 19 since I put a K&N air filter in it. Although it is a little underpowered, it's not too bad. I would probably prefer the supercharged model, but the gas mileage would probably be less. Overall, it's a fun driving truck that feels like a big truck.

  5. Jermey Jaskolski 2024-11-06

I really love this truck! It has been a reliable vehicle for me, with almost 45000 miles on it and not a single problem. The interior is well-designed and doesn't have the cheap look and feel that some other trucks have. It's also very user-friendly. If you switch out the BFG rugged trail tires for a real All Terrain tire, like the Yokohama Geolander A/T+II's, the off-road ability is amazing. The Yoko's solved the problem of having no wet road traction with the BFG's. I ordered mine with the 5spd manual which has a 4LO crawl ratio of nearly 40:1. Gas mileage is good for a 4x4, with an average of 20mpg on the highway and 15-16 in town. Even while towing my '72 240Z on the highway (3300lbs w/trailer) I still averaged 16mpg @ 65-70mph.
