Common 1999 Nissan Frontier problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Nissan Frontier 1999, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Problems: Transmission issues are a significant concern with the Nissan Frontier, particularly in the 2005 model year. The radiator has been reported to cause transmission failure, with the average cost to fix this problem around $3,700. Additionally, radiator cracks leaking fluid into the transmission and coolant leaking into and ruining the transmission have been reported in subsequent model years, such as 2006 and 2007.
- Check Engine Light Due to Faulty Fuel Level Sensor: Another common problem reported is the Check Engine Light illuminating due to a faulty fuel level sensor. This issue can lead to inaccurate fuel level readings and may require sensor replacement to address the warning light and ensure accurate fuel level monitoring.
- Braking System Issues: Owners have reported concerns with spongy or soft brake pedals, indicating potential issues with the braking system. Spongy brakes can pose safety risks and may be linked to excessive corrosion. Addressing brake pedal issues promptly is crucial to ensure safe driving conditions and prevent potential accidents.
- Engine Mount Problems and Poor Acceleration: Some Nissan Frontier drivers have experienced engine mount issues leading to poor acceleration. This can affect the vehicle's performance and drivability, requiring inspection and potential repairs to resolve the issue and restore optimal acceleration capabilities.
- Airbag and Seat Belt Safety Concerns: Reports have highlighted problems with seat belt latches and non-deploying airbags in certain Nissan Frontier vehicles. These safety issues can compromise occupant protection in the event of a collision, emphasizing the importance of ensuring all safety systems, including airbags and seat belts, are functioning correctly to maintain vehicle safety standards.
- Starter Malfunctions: Defective starters have been identified as a common problem in the Nissan Frontier. If the vehicle fails to start, it is essential to diagnose whether the issue lies with the starter or other components like the battery, battery cables, or the neutral safety switch. Proper troubleshooting is necessary to determine the root cause of the starting problem and facilitate appropriate repairs.
These common problems reported by owners of the Nissan Frontier 1999 highlight various mechanical and safety issues that may require attention and maintenance to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and safety on the road.
What year was a bad year for a Nissan Frontier?
Nissan Frontiers with automatic transmissions manufactured between 2005 and 2008 have a defective radiator design. The fluid lines for the truck's transmission pass through the radiator. Any leaks or problems with the radiator can instantly destroy both the radiator and the transmission on these Frontier models.
What year Nissan Frontiers had transmission problems?
Transmission Problems
Car Problem Zoo reported that 2005-2008 model years have the most complaints. Similarly, Car Complaints identified Nissan Frontier transmission problems as the number one type of issue with the truck. The radiators in the 2005-2008 Frontier tended to rupture before the truck reached 10,000 miles.
Is Nissan Frontier reliable?
The Nissan Frontier Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 1st out of 7 for midsize trucks.
How many miles will a 2000 Nissan Frontier last?
Most owners get 100,000 miles. Some owners, have got over 200,000 miles. Maintenance, should make some difference in how long it will last. Oil and filter is cheap.

I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE TRUCK (NTB04-062C) THAT COULD CAUSE THE FUEL PUMP TO STOP WORKING. I VERIFIED WITH NISSAN OVER THE PHONE THAT THE TRUCK WAS DEFINITELY INVOLVED IN THE RECALL. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO A LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP (SOUTHLAKE NISSAN IN MERRILLVILLE, IN). AFTER KEEPING THE TRUCK THERE FOR A WEEK AND TELLING ME THAT THEY HAD TO ORDER PARTS, THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY COULD NOT PERFORM THE RECALL BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT RUNNING. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED HOME TODAY. THIS RECALL IS SPECIFICALLY FOR AN ISSUE THAT IS KNOWN TO CAUSE A NO START CONDITION. HOW CAN I GET THE RECALL PERFORMED IF THEY WILL NOT WORK ON IT IF IT WON'T START? I NOW HAVE PAID OVER $300 IN TOWING CHARGES AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY WORK DONE.

COMPLAINT FILED WITH FIRESTONE, AND TIRE SENT TO THEM AT MY EXPENSE. THEY REFUSE TO ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY, AND CLAIM LOW INFLATION AND AGE ARE THE CAUSES OF THE PROBLEM (NOT SURPRISING SINCE THE TIRE NEEDED INFLATING EVERY WEEK). THEY WANT ME TO PAY TO HAVE TIRE SENT BACK TO ME, BUT HELL WILL FREEZE OVER BEFORE THAT OR BEFORE I STOP TELLING ANYBODY WILLING TO LISTEN ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE AND FIRESTONE'S RESPONSE. *JB

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing truck I bought with only 40k miles. It now has 145k miles and the only issue I had was with the muffler, but I replaced it and the truck has been performing like new ever since. As a snowboard instructor, I take this truck to the mountains during winter and it's just perfect for it! I even replaced the stereo with a nice Eclipse deck, new speakers, and a sub, making it even more comfortable. I've also hauled a 20ft boat with it and it had no problem at all. This truck has plenty of torque! :)
-
This truck is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a reliable and reasonably comfortable vehicle. With 80000 miles on the clock, it has proven to be a trustworthy companion. The handling is good, and it performs exceptionally well in winter conditions. Despite being a truck, it still manages to get a respectable 21 miles to the gallon in mixed driving. While there were some issues with the AC in the first year, it was quickly resolved under warranty. Although one of the front wheel locking hubs has become hard to turn, it still functions well. With the largest truck bed of any pick up, it can haul a lot of stuff. Mine is a four-cylinder, five-speed model, which provides enough power for most jobs. Overall, this truck is a solid choice that will serve you well for years to come.
-
I've had my truck for about 2 years now and I absolutely love it! It has 62,000 miles on it and even though it has a 4 cyl., 5 spd. manual, which some might consider a little weak, it still has enough pep to make driving it a lot of fun. I'm happy to say that I haven't had any major problems with it so far. The only issues I've had have been small things like buttons on the stereo popping off and the handle to the driver's seat adjustment coming off. Recently, the driver's side window has started to give me some trouble, but overall it's been a very reliable truck. The 4WD has allowed me to explore some really cool areas, although it doesn't have the clearance of a Toyota. Unfortunately, there are no cheap fixes for this, but it's still great for just piddling around in. I really hope I never have to sell mine!
-
I have driven this
-
A very good value. I'm glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your truck! You've put it through a lot and it's great to hear that it's held up so well. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Your 1998 Frontier has been a very reliable truck, even though the nearest Nissan dealer is 87 miles away and you have never had to tow it! The Nissan plastic decal on the tailgate refused to stay on after two tries at dealership gluing. You finally had them take it off and buff the paint under it (at your expense!). The radio light is starting to go on and off. You have yet to take it off-road, but it's nice to know the four-wheel is there, especially in Montana! Make sure that you have a person in the know wire yours for a trailer! You feel that you got your money's worth. Not great gas mileage - but better than a V-8.

This truck has been reliable in terms of not breaking down, but I have had some issues with the front end, such as loose torsion bars and sway bar end links breaking loose three times. Currently, my steering needs an alignment. When I took it to Foothill Nissan for an automatic transmission service, they overfilled it, causing it to leak all over the undercarriage. Additionally, my driver's side window has always rattled, and the windows fog up easily, unlike other trucks I have had. The heat always comes out of the vent, even when set to cold, and the front fenders dent easily. Despite these issues, it is a great-looking truck, and I believe that with some improvements to the quality, it could be even better.

Hi there! I noticed that you've had to replace quite a few parts on your truck, including the throttle body, power steering hoses, o2 sensors, struts, ball joints, the whole brake assembly, and sway bar links. It can be frustrating when things keep breaking, but I'm here to help. Let's see if we can find a solution together!

I bought my Frontier used in 1999 and have put 104,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I've had a lot of issues with this truck, from the wires behind the radio mysteriously melting to problems with the brakes, clutch, tailgate latch, muffler, radiator, and more. It's been a frustrating experience, but I'm finally trading it in tomorrow. YIPPIE! Looking back, I probably should have done it sooner, but I kept hoping each problem would be the last. It's worth noting that I may have just gotten a lemon.

I purchased this vehicle the day after I totalled my Sentra, as I wanted a car that could carry furniture and big boxes, and sit higher up off the ground (my 97 Sentra was so low). While there are obvious differences between the two vehicles, such as gas mileage and interior space, I was surprised to find that I only got 25 or 26 mpg on the highway, rather than the expected 2 or 3 mpg more. Despite this, it is a great truck for city driving, although it is not particularly comfortable for long trips and can only carry one other person. There is an occasional noise that sounds like a lid is rattling under the hood, possibly the heating manifold cover, but I am confident that it is nothing serious. I bought it used at 44k miles and have found that it shifts and handles smoothly at high rpm.
