Common 2017 Nissan Frontier problems
The 2017 Nissan Frontier is a compact pickup truck that has been known for its reliability and affordability. However, like any other vehicle, it has its fair share of common problems that have been reported by owners.
One of the most widespread issues with the 2017 Nissan Frontier is the fuel tank overflowing while filling. This problem is caused by a clogged charcoal canister that allows fuel to fill too high and eventually overflow. The fuel tank overflowing while filling is a significant concern for 2017 Frontier owners, with many reporting the issue around 45,000 miles. Replacing the charcoal canister can cost around $200, depending on local labor rates.
Another common problem reported by 2017 Nissan Frontier owners is chipping paint on the front bumper and hood. This issue is caused by the thin paint used on these areas, which tends to chip easily. The only way to properly fix paint chips is by repainting the affected areas, which can cost around $1,000 per panel.
The manual seat not adjusting properly is another issue found on some 2017 Frontier models. The seat rails tend to not lock in properly with the bottom of the seat, leading to the seats feeling loose on the rails. Fixing the issue involves re-aligning the seat, which costs around $150.
While these are some of the most common problems reported by 2017 Nissan Frontier owners, it is important to note that the truck has only one recall, covering the ignition switch. Nissan will replace the ignition switch on affected models for free.
In addition to these common problems, some 2017 Nissan Frontier owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including the failure to recognize phones and upload music from phones. These issues may be related to dusty conditions or other aspects of the electronics or electrical system.
Overall, the 2017 Nissan Frontier is a reliable and affordable compact pickup truck that has been known for its durability and longevity. However, like any other vehicle, it has its fair share of common problems that owners should be aware of. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the 2017 Nissan Frontier.
Is 2017 a good year for the Nissan Frontier?
Overall Rating 7/10 – 2017 is a good year for the Nissan Frontier, although it's still outdated compared to many competitors. Owner reviews praise the off-road performance, strong engines, along with the low ownership costs.
How many miles will a 2017 Nissan Frontier last?
Nissan vehicles are generally known for their reliability and longevity. On average, a well-maintained Nissan can last between 200,000 to 300,000 miles. This means if you drive around 15,000 miles per year, which is the average for most drivers, you can expect your Nissan to last between 13 to 20 years.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-04
- VIN: 1N6BD0CT1HN
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Fuel tank developed leak at the filler neck connection point. The tank is "plastic". Connection neck is "plastic" but a different color than the tank. (Perhaps dissimilar materials that are somehow fused/bonded together.) Fuel spilled from the tank onto my garage floor initially; I moved the vehicle outside. The problem was confirmed by an independent service center. The service center replaced the tank with a new OEM tank. The vehicle is low mileage, garage kept and well maintained. I am reporting this in case there is a manufacturers defect in these fuel tanks. Photo of the fuel tank and filler connection neck area attached.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-14
- VIN: 1N6BD0CT9HN
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Since buying the vehicle new, the airbag light has been on and off throughout the entire time (The vehicle has never been crashed). I have brought it in to multiple dealerships asking for them to take a look at it and have never gotten much feedback other than them resetting it or having replaced wiring due to previous recalls. I was alerted recently of the airbag control unit now needing to be replaced. With Nissan's history of questionable electrical efforts, the component seems like something that may need to be evaluated in some capacity.
WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-07
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1N6AD0ER3HN
- Components: WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: From the first snow fall in Minnesota, I had to drive very slow, there is no traction, or control of the car. I had 2 spin outs, and one person hit me. I do not feel safe in this car, but you won't trade it in for me. I fear for my life, driving in Minnesota winter. The wheels just keep turning, and there is no way to control the car.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-05
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1N6BD0CT9HN
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Hit a cement barrier going 60 mph at a 45 degree angle on the passenger side and only the passenger side curtain airbag deployed.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-23
- VIN: 1N6DD0EV8HN
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: There was a coolant leak. It was leaking from head gasket. When it was being rebuilt there were two head bolts stripped. The truck only has 58,000 miles. We were told that the engin isn't covered by the warranty.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-30
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1N6AD0EV6HN
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The two square head carriage bolts that secure the roof clamp to the rack were poor quality. The heads sheared off which cause the roof rack to rip off from the top of the truck and fly into traffic on the freeway. The items being held by the rack did not exceed the 150 lb limit. When the rack broke free, the kayak and camping bags broke the rear window on my truck, hit my 2 dogs, and landed in the roadway causing cars to swerve to avoid collision. The damage to my truck alone is in excess of $1,000 not including the camping equipment and kayak that have to be replaced as they are irreparably damaged. If traffic were heavier, this incident could easily have caused a major collision as there was a large roof rack and equipment strewn about the freeway. I had to run onto the freeway to remove the items to not cause further collisions. I retained all the broken pieces of the rack and photographed the incident. I read multiple reviews on the website where I purchased the product and this appears to be a common problem. There were no indicators of failure prior to the rack breaking off from my truck and flying onto the roadway. The hardware used to secure the clamp to the crossbar is completely insufficient. There appeared to be no adhesion on the weld that held the head of the carriage bolt to the shaft. The galvanization appeared to be the only thing causing the bolt to stay in one piece prior to it bearing weight.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-01
- VIN: 1n6dd0evxhn
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: As I was driving my truck this morning it stalled on me, two times. The first time I was able to turn the key off and back on again and it started right up. I then drove it about 20 yards (luckily I was in a parking lot) and it stalled again but this time the dash lights remained on even with key out of the ignition. Also I was not able to unlock the doors. I kept turning key back and forth until the truck finally started. I was going to try disconnecting the battery to see if that would help but with the truck running I unhooked the negative side and the truck kept running!!Oh, and I also had the ignition switch replaced a few weeks ago under that recall. This is very unsafe to say the least and I can't believe it's not affecting other 2017 Frontiers.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-29
- VIN: 1n6dd0evxhn
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When I got in my truck yesterday some of the dash warning lights were on and the digital mileage was showing up. This is all without a key in the ignition. I could start it but it cranked a bit. So I opened the hood to disconnect the battery and I could hear that the engine was priming, no telling how long this was going on since I haven't driven it in a couple of weeks. This happened about a month ago as well although that time the radio was playing with no key in the ignition.

- Summary: THE AIRBAG LIGHT STAYS FLASHING AND DOES NOT TURN OFF ON THE TRUCK. I DROVE THE TRUCK WITH MY FRIEND AND WE WERE BOTH IN OUR SEAT BELTS, FOR AN ENTIRE 1 HOUR RIDE THE LIGHT KEPT FLASHING. THE AIRBAG LIGHT STARTS FLASHING AS SOON AS I START THE TRUCK NOW AND DOES NOT SHUT OFF UNLESS I PARK THE CAR AND TURN THE CAR OFF. - Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I TRY AND FILL UP FUEL AND THE PUMP CONSTANTLY SHUTS OFF. I HAVE TO PUMP THE FUEL SUPER SLOW IN ORDER FOR IT TO FILL UP. I HAVE TRIED DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS, SAME ISSUE. I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER AND THEY DID SOME REPAIRS UNDER THE ENHANCEMENT WARRANTY THEY IMPLEMENTED, BUT THE ISSUE STILL EXISTS. THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME $1900 TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK AND OTHER FUEL COMPONENTS EVEN THOUGH THE EXACT SAME ISSUE IS HAPPENING AS DESCRIBED IN THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT FOR THE ISSUE. CODE P0448. THE ISSUE IS BEYOND JUST THE EVAP CANISTER IF THE ISSUE STILL EXISTS AFTER THEY REPLACED IT, SO IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THEY ARE ONLY TRYING TO REPAIR PART OF THE ISSUES EVEN THOUGH IT IS BEYOND THE BASIC FIX, IF IT IS STILL OCCURRING. IF YOU TRY AND FILL UP NORMALLY, THE NOZZLE SHUTS OFF OR THE FUEL SPILLS OUT BECAUSE IT IS DETECTING IT IS FULL EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT.

Hello! I noticed that the review is listed as a 2019 model, but I actually have the 2017 model. I'm not sure how to change it, but I wanted to share my thoughts on the Pro 4x with the luxury options. It's a fantastic truck with full leather heated power adjustable seats, a moonroof, roof rack, touch screen navigation, heated mirrors, great sound, and true off-road suspension. The engine is strong and the handling is surprisingly good. I highly recommend getting the Pro 4x loaded! It's not much more expensive and it's a much nicer truck than the base 4x model. The only thing I wish it had was auto up and down on all 4 windows, or at least both front windows. Currently, only the driver's side has auto down and no auto up. Thank you for reading!

Your 2017 Nissan Frontier sounds like a great truck! I understand your concerns about the new 2022 design, as well as the Pathfinder. It seems like they may have focused too much on fluff and not enough on usability. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I purchased my truck back in October 2017 and had the choice between Toyota and Colorado, both of which were priced around $7000.00 to $8000.00 higher. I was thoroughly impressed with the ride and towing capacity. As a surveyor who travels all over Texas, I tow a 5X10 trailer with an ATV on it and this truck has never let me down. Since retiring, I have put 130,000 miles on it (mostly in the first three years) and have only had to replace two light bulbs and the tires. It still drives as well as it did when it was new and gets around 20mpg on the highway. I have taken it off-road many times and it has proven to be surprisingly tough. I have absolutely no regrets about my purchase.

This truck is not a luxury model, but it is definitely a working man's truck. It has excellent power right out of the gate, and as it shifts through the gears, the changes are smooth and crisp. I was never a Nissan fan, but after driving this truck, I am becoming one. I would definitely buy it again. I was also interested in Ford and Toyota, but I think the Nissan was the best deal.
-
You got everything you needed at a great price! The ride was good and the mileage was impressive. Plus, with 47,900 miles and 0 problems, you really lucked out!

The truck has a large turning radius, which is comparable to my grandfather's deuce and a half. Unfortunately, it suffered hail damage while my other vehicles and my neighbor's Tacoma did not. I noticed that the Nissan dealership keeps all their vehicles under cover, while the Toyota dealership does not. In hindsight, I should have invested in a Toyota, which I believe would have been a better choice.
Leonardo Hayes 2024-09-03
The truck was running smoothly for two months, but then it started to come in and out of gear at highway speeds. Despite the dealer's attempts to fix it twice, the issue persisted and a replacement truck was put on the plate. Unfortunately, after only 5 miles, the new truck also got stuck in gear and could not be fixed. It has been 4 months now and we are still paying for a truck that we don't have. We have spoken to 15 people in a row at the dealer's service department, and while they have apologized for the inconvenience, we are still left without a solution.
Amparo Sauer 2024-04-26
Although I enjoyed the truck, I noticed that the mpg was lower than the 2009 model I had and it didn't have the same acceleration. Unfortunately, I was involved in an accident and discovered that the side curtain airbag on the passenger side was the only one that deployed, despite hitting a k-rail at 60mph. This was quite concerning as there was no passenger in the vehicle at the time.

The dealership's communication regarding the availability of the vehicle was not up to the mark. Despite driving for over two hours, I was informed that the vehicle was sold. It would have been helpful if the website had marked it as pending or sold, or if there was a sign on the truck indicating that it was sold. Additionally, the dealership suggested that I pay more money for more miles for another vehicle. This experience was disappointing and a waste of time.
