Common 2022 Nissan Frontier problems
The Nissan Frontier 2022 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues range from electrical problems to transmission concerns and even some design flaws.
One of the most common problems reported is related to the electrical system. Some owners have experienced issues with their keyfobs and door locks not working correctly. This has led to the inconvenience of having to manually open and lock doors, causing frustration for owners who expect their vehicles to function properly.
Another electrical issue reported is related to the battery and BCM (Body Control Module). Some owners have experienced their vehicles not starting due to the BCM going to sleep. This issue has been resolved by disconnecting both battery terminals and holding them together for 30 seconds before reconnecting them. However, this issue has been known to recur, causing concern for owners who have to rely on their vehicles for daily use.
The transmission has also been a source of concern for some Nissan Frontier 2022 owners. Some have reported that their vehicles prematurely downshift at low speeds, causing a constant hunt for the correct gear. This issue has been intermittent, with no codes stored, making it difficult for dealers to diagnose and resolve the problem. Nissan is aware of the issue but has not yet provided a fix.
In addition to these issues, some owners have reported design flaws. For instance, the air conditioner drain hose has been known to drain behind the glove box, causing a harness to short out. This issue was not covered under warranty, causing frustration for owners who had to pay for the repairs themselves.
Lastly, some owners have reported issues with the seats. The seat back has been known to move slightly, causing concern for those who want their seats to remain stationary. This issue has been reported on both the driver and passenger sides.
In summary, the Nissan Frontier 2022 has been reported to have several common problems, including electrical issues, transmission concerns, design flaws, and seat movement. While some of these issues have been resolved, others remain unresolved, causing frustration for owners who expect their vehicles to function properly.

Are Nissan Frontiers reliable?
The Nissan Frontier scores generally high reliability ratings across model years. The auto repair database RepairPal gives the Nissan Frontier an overall 4 out of 5 for reliability, placing it at the top of the rankings for midsize pickups. However, there are several exceptions.
What are the cons of a Nissan Frontier?
Fuel economy of 18 mpg overall is not a standout among midsized pickup trucks. Handling is relatively responsive and secure, but the steering is too heavy at low speeds. Plus, the steering wheel lacks a telescope adjustment. The ride is stiff and choppy, though it's an improvement over the previous-generation Frontier.

The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been made aware of the failure via email; however, the contact had not received a response. The failure mileage was 34,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- VIN: 1N6ED1EK8NN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: We have had multiple occasions when the dashboard read as "System Fault"with multiple warning/indicator lights. 12/12/23, while backing out of a parking space at low speed. 9/12/2024 while at a Red Light, and lightly letting off the brake. 9/13/24 while driving 65 mph . An appt was requested at the dealership of purchase for 9/17/24. An email notification was also received from the truck stating that the ABS System may be malfunctioning. When the alert warning/indicator lights appear, the alert states on the dashboard "Warning" "System Fault" "See Owners Manual" . The system generated email states "Your vehicle's antilock braking system may require service". We only received one notification from the vehicle related to the 9/12/24 alert. On 9/19/24 the dealership could not replicate or find a code related to the ABS System Fault and we were encouraged to bring the vehicle back if it happened again so they could run the code. The dealership would take the vehicle for a longer drive on 9/20/24 to try to replicate the issue. At this point, we filed a complaint with the manufacturer, and have not heard directly from the dealership if they have been able to replicate the warning. The concern for safety is that since the vehicle alerting that the ABS system may be require attention, there may be other electrical issues with the vehicle, along with braking issue concern. There was one occasion on 1/21/2024 with a system error message stating "warning when Parked apply parking brake" the vehicle had just been turned on and put in reverse. There is a large safety concern as this vehicle has had other safety issues including a half latch (where the doors would not open from inside or outside, requiring exiting through alternate door, a parking pawl recall, and transmission issues that we've brought forward in our formal complaint to the manufacturer. Including "Tow" alarm notifications to strengthen the safety concern of electrical issues with this vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-01
- VIN: 1N6ED1EJ7NN
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: In December 2021, I purchased a 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-X. The vehicle comes with built-in navigation that, according to their website, should receive map updates quarterly. Since purchasing the vehicle, brand new, there have been no updates to the navigation system nor maps. I have gone back and forth with Nissan support and the dealership only to be told there are no updates. The maps are severely out of date, making a feature that many people rely on useless. Therefore, we are not getting full value of what we are paying for. This is a complaint for numerous Nissan owners as I've found in message board forums. Nissan is not addressing the problem and will not return my messages or address my concern directly.

- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: 1. Case #[XXX] filed with Nissan. The vehicle 'ADAS' is unreliable and a safety hazard. Warning indicators illuminate for no apparent reason. Sometimes for a brief period, and sometimes the indicators remain illuminated until the vehicle is turned off. Standard and Adaptive cruise controls will not function. When standard and adaptive cruise control is used the shifting in the vehicle is atrocious. The unit will downshift and the engine RPM displays 5000. Up shifting continues with 4000, 3000, 2000, and finally 1850 RPM respectively and the set cruise speed is obtained. 2. Integrity of the 'ADAS', 'Standard cruise', and 'Adaptive cruise' are unreliable. As an operator the actions of the unit are in consistent and endanger the operator. 3. Two dealers have addressed the 'ADAS' issue. One installed a fix. The second further serviced the unit. Uftring Nissan Service Invoice '[XXX]'. 4. No manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others have inspected the vehicle. 5. Warning lamps, messages, and other symptoms have been present since delivery. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-08
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1N6ED1EJ6NN
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I do not know what caused this to happen. There were no warning lights or messages. Prior to this incident the transmission would rev/speed up on its own for a few seconds (I don't know if this is relevant). Salesperson told me about this and said it was nothing to worry about. The vehicle is equipped with a sensor that brakes if you come to close to an object. This sensor has definitely worked in the past. I was backing up down a long driveway, approximately 50 yards. When I took my foot off of the gas pedal, it did not slow down. Instead it sped up and was uncontrollable. I looked down to make sure my foot was on the brake which it was. I then used both feet to push down on the brake but that did not work either. The vehicle did not stop until it ran into a building. If somebody would have been behind me they would have died or been seriously injured. If the building would not have been there, I might have died or been seriously injured due to the vehicle accelerating at a high speed on its own and the brakes failing to stop the vehicle. This incident happened yesterday so it has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or inspected by the manufacturer or insurance. It happened on private property and will not be inspected by the police.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
- VIN: 1N6ED1EJ5NN
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: 2022 vehicle, have owned for less than two years. All cameras stopped working, even rear view camera when in Reverse. Went to dealer, and was quoted $5000 to fix issue, replace AVM control unit (Part # 284A1-9BU1A) Not covered under factory warranty due to having too many miles. It is a common issue to that particular model (2022 Frontier Pro-x) from what I've gathered online. I think it's definitely a safety concern not having a rear view camera and outrageous I would be expected to pay $5000 to fix the issue without even being certain the problem will happen again in another two years
POWER TRAIN,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-23
- VIN: 1N6ED1EK5NN
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SEATS
- Summary: I was out hunting, and positioned the truck on a down hill slope to look down onto a unit I wanted to watch. When I put the truck into park it started rolling forward. Once I hit the bakes it stopped. Then obviously I moved the truck. Because of concern. Also the drivers seat lays back on its own, after use you get back into the truck, you have to activate the button to set the seat back in its previous position.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-22
- VIN: 1N6ED1EK1NN
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: When cruise control is active vehicle ramps to 6000 rpm to gain 1-2 mph going up slight inclines and even straight away. This also occurs when going around another vehicle while cruise control is active. This is a major safety issue as this could cause loss of control of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealership and was inspected by a mechanic. The mechanic stated there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. I was told this on 2 occasions when bringing this to the dealerships attention. This has been happening each and every time cruise control is active.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-29
- VIN: 1N6ED1EK3NN
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: On 8/26/23, I came upon a red light and stopped. Vehicle immediately would not go into gear, all dash lights and check engine light were flashing, and fan motors were running loudly. Error message said automatic transmission error. The vehicle could not be turned off for approx. 10 minutes. Had to push the vehicle off of the roadway. I was able to restart the vehicle after 2 hours. On 8/28,23, the exact same thing happened and I was stuck in the lane of traffic. All dash lights and check engine light were flashing. Error message said automatic transmission error. Would not go into any gear. The vehicle could not be turned off for approx. 10 minutes. I had the vehicle pulled out of the roadway, then towed to dealership on 8/28/23. The dealership contacted me on 8/29/82 and stated they could not duplicate the error and there was nothing else they could do at that time. My concern is that this happens again in a more dangerous setting.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-14
- VIN: 1N6ED1EK4NN
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Door does not always open when unlocking. Door opens partially, but does not unlatch. I have to enter the truck from the passenger side & use the inside handle to open it. Issue us intermittent, and has happened approximately 15 to 20 times over the past year.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-01
- VIN: 1N6ED1EK3NN
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: Driver's side powered seatback randomly tilts backward, losing the seat settings that the driver has set. Nissan and other Frontier owners say it is because of the way the driver gets in and out of the vehicle, especially by 'heavier drivers', and claim the driver hits the controls with the back of their leg when getting in or out of the vehicle. This requires the driver to adjust the seat each time this happens. I'm one of those 'heavier drivers', and have also noticed that on a few occasions, the seatback slowly tilted back while driving. Because Nissan said it would require a redesign of the seats, my dealer, with the approval of a Nissan regional technician, installed an on/off power switch that cuts the power to the seats so once you set the seat position and turn off the power, the seat doesn't move.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-13
- VIN: 1N6ED1EK8NN
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: The truck's computer control system suffered a catastrophic failure after intermittent warning for ABS brakes and Emissions. After this failure the truck was left stranded in the pouring thunderstorm - it wouldn't start, waring lights for just about everything and couldn't be towed as the electronic transmission was locked in park with no manual overrides. Had it occurred on a highway it could have caused serious dangers. After 2+ weeks the dealer hasn't been able to diagnose the problems, repair or return the truck. Complaints have been filed with Nissan Consumer Affairs.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-14
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1N6ED1FJ9NN
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: On July 14, 2023 at approximately 07:15 am, my 2022 Nissan Frontier SV caught on fire. I got home from work at approximately 07:05 am. There were no signs of a possibility of a fire. The front left corner of the truck was destroyed along with other things that melted from the fire. The damage at this time is approximately $27,000. The truck is being investigated as a thermal incident through Nissan USA. They say it will take approximately 8 weeks to finish. At this time it is unsure as to the cause of the fire. You will also see a picture of warning lights from May 10, 2023. I was told not to worry about them because the front sensor was probably wet. Nissan could not trace a problem code.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-14
- VIN: 1N6ED1EK8NN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: UNKNOWN. HAD THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE LAST YEAR FOR SUDDEN "SYSTEM FAULT" warning along with check engine, collision avaoidance and braking disabled, TCS OFF, ABS, and several other lights. I have been told the dealer could not find the problem, which is odd because nissan connected services logs data from my truck and emails me when there is a fault, like abs system failure see dealer, I have had the truck to the dealer no less than 4 times when it was actually check and a few other they refused to even look at it. The last visit i had the warning lights all come on and i took it to another dealer and demanded they scan it with out shutting it off which would cause the system to reset and then they could find the fault again. This is frankly dangerous I have had the system fail in low traction / high wind areas where it was dangerous to be drving like that.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-18
- VIN: 1N6ED1CM5NN
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle has significant lag when trying trying to accelerate quickly. It also surges wildly on occasion when cruise control is engaged. It has happened both on slight inclines and when cornering. Both of these events are outside of operator control and could cause an accident. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer and there are no warning indicators. The vehicle is available for inspection. It seems like there may be a programming issue in regards to the electronic throttle, speed sensors, and transmission.

Negative 2022 Nissan Frontier car reviews
Positive 2022 Nissan Frontier car reviews
-
As someone who has owned two previous Frontiers (a 2007 SE CC 4x2 with 213,000 miles over 11 1/2 years, and a 2018 SV CC 4x2 with 61,000 miles over 3 1/2 years), I can confidently say that my 2022 SV CC 4x4 premium is the best of all three. I've been driving Frontiers for 15 years, and Nissan has finally given me almost everything I've been looking for in a new truck. The interior is a breath of fresh air, with a clean design that's well laid out and easy to keep clean. The seats are more comfortable than in previous Frontiers, and the gauge cluster is clean and easy to read. All controls are in the right place and within reach while driving. The addition of driver assist and adaptive cruise control is long overdue and much appreciated. The leather seats are of much higher quality, with a better fit, feel, and trim than in previous versions of the Frontier. The Fender sound system is a giant step above the stock SV unit and, in my opinion, should be optional for all trims. Cup and bottle holders are plentiful, and there are better Some people complained about Nissan reusing interior items from other vehicles and not everything being brand new. However, in my opinion, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The interior is well thought out, fresh, and very nice. So what if they used a button or switch from a car from last year? Overall, I give it an 8/10 for the interior. The exterior is awesome and really has that 'I mean business' truck look. In my opinion, it's the best mid-sized truck out there and better than the previews of what is coming. No other mid-sized truck looks as good and yet simple. The GM twins look like SUVs, Toyota isn't bad except for that hideous front end, and Ford is too rounded, even the new one still looks like a baby wannabe truck. Of course, Nissan's bed is still the best in the business. The factory spray-in bedliner is the toughest and cleanest looking, and the utili-track system is bar none the best in the truck world. Finally, the painted grill and complete removal of the 1950s chrome is about time! Overall, the design is sleek yet rugged, chiseled yet soft. They did a really good job on the looks department. This is what the ugly Titan should have looked like. A big minus for me was the removal of the bed floor utili-track rails. I have always used them in the past. Thankfully, my 2018 was totaled, and knowing I was going to buy the 2022, I pulled the floor tracks out of my old truck and installed them in my new truck. I got the tailgate letters, which help in the looks department, but Nissan does not have the grill letters (should have been a set). The Sport bar looks great, but some people knock Nissan as Australia's Navarra (frontier) has a sport bar and can have a tonneau cover. The US Frontier cannot have both, nor does Nissan provide a tonneau cover as an option like Australia.I really appreciate the honest feedback provided in this review. It's great to hear that the driving experience has improved significantly compared to the previous model. The steering is spot on and provides good feedback while driving. The ride is much better and the suspension is not loose or spongey like other trucks. The powertrain is responsive and smooth, providing plenty of power to get up and go. It's also great to hear that there have been no issues with dependability so far. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!Overall, I would like to give a 9/10 rating for dependability, based on my 15 years of owning and driving Frontiers. However, I do believe that Nissan could improve their warranty by offering a 10 year 150,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. Nissan has built solid trucks that have few problems, and a better warranty would attract more customers. Overall, I would give a 5/10 rating for the warranty.

This truck has good handling and decent fuel mileage, but its quality is not impressive. There have been issues with warning lights and intermittent electrical problems, as well as recalls for fogging headlights and taillights, transfer case seal leaks, exhaust rust, and brake pulse. With only 32000 kms, I would recommend considering a Toyota or GM truck instead. This truck may not hold up to heavy use.

There hasn't been any improvement in front passenger crash survivability, which remains at 3 stars. This means that you are twice as likely to be fatally injured in this truck compared to a 5-star rated one. The truck uses direct injection without the ability of the port to wash the valves through detergents in gasoline. While gas mileage is not stellar in the city, it reaches 25mpg at 65mph on the highway. However, it has dropped to 16 in the city. According to consumer reports, the reliability is less than average.

I recently purchased a 2022 Frontier straight off the hauler. Unfortunately, I noticed a small ding on the passenger side rear door. Upon closer inspection, I found that the door had 7 or 8 wavy areas and outward protruding dents. Although it wasn't noticeable when looking straight into the door, it was visible from the passenger rear or passenger front down the vehicle. I brought this to the attention of the dealership less than 24 hours after purchasing the truck. They offered paint-less dent repair, but unfortunately, their PDR guy said it was a 'factory defect' and wouldn't touch it. The door was repaired twice within a month of me buying it, but with each attempted repair, it looked even worse. The door skin was replaced the second time, and with so many layers of paint, the door had a purple tint rather than the pearl blue. If the complete door had been replaced the first time, I would still be driving it. Unfortunately, Nissan Consumer Affairs was not helpful, and I never made it back to the dealer to have the driver door repaired. The best thing I ever did was to sell that headache to Carmax.

The 2022 Frontier Pro-4X is a great truck, but unfortunately, the bed panels leave something to be desired. The gaps between the tailgate and bedside are not even close, and the tops of the bedside panels are opened so much that the gaps can't be adjusted out at the tailgate. The opening around the closed tailgate is so large that you can look through the gaps from inside or outside. Despite having a factory spray-in bed liner, it seems that Nissan chose to cover up poor workmanship where the panels are mated. When I installed a high-end Tonneau cover, I had to install additional weather stripping around the tailgate opening to stop water and dust leaks. I contacted the Tonneau cover company about the problem and spoke with their engineering department head. He explained that Nissan provides the bed assembly to them to use as their template to manufacture the Tonneau cover, but the bed lacked much work in its panel fit. I also called Nissan to explain the fit issue, and a representative from TN called and left a message for me to call back. Unfortunately, I missed his work hours by 10 minutes and had to leave a message on his voicemail, but I never received a return call. This is my 5th new Nissan purchase, and while it's the first with poorly fitted panels, I hope that Nissan can address this issue in the future.

To truly understand the Nissan truck, it's important to experience it firsthand. However, it's worth noting that the truck's narrow frame and top-heavy design can make it a bit tricky to handle, especially with off-road shocks on the highway. It's important to exercise caution when driving this vehicle. Additionally, some components of the truck are made of plastic and the bead-lock rims are for show only. The raised hood can also make it difficult to see the front of the truck, and the back seats are quite small. However, the truck does offer some great features such as dual climate control, although it may not be as effective in such a small space. Overall, the Nissan truck is a solid choice for those in the market for a new vehicle. The HP/Engine of this toy truck is excellent, with zero pause! Even though it doesn't need to be as powerful as a turbo, it's still fun to punch it. However, with gas prices at $5 a gallon, it might be best to keep it parked in your driveway. It's great that this toy truck doesn't use a CVT transmission, and hopefully, it will have a resale value of at least 30%. Unfortunately, some dealers are overcharging and not allowing internet customers to see the window stickers for the two high trims. It's frustrating that the roof is 4 inches too low for the extra 5 inches of length, making it difficult for taller drivers to see when driving into the sun. Additionally, the 2022 Frontier PRO 4X doesn't have 4WD mode settings like snow, ice, sand, and rain, which is a shame. However, it's important to note that Nissan has had 17 years to redesign a completely new truck. Let's hope they continue to invest in building a real truck here in the US. In summary...It's disappointing to see that Nissan hasn't offered a diverse range of truck options, such as engine choices, a new ladder frame, a manual stick shift, or a 6-foot bed on a PRO trim. It's also puzzling why a PRO trim would be offered without 4WD and a rear locking differential. However, it's important to note that Nissan may have faced challenges in investing and retooling their manufacturing plants to build a truck with multiple options. Overall, while the 2022 Frontier truck may not be what some were hoping for, it's still worth considering for those in the midsize truck market.
