Common 2008 Nissan Frontier problems

The Nissan Frontier, known for its no-frills and hardworking nature, has had its fair share of issues over the years, particularly with the 2008 model. One of the most common problems reported by owners is related to the powertrain, with 54 complaints regarding radiator failure and overheating. This issue has led to total transmission rebuilds in some cases, with the problem occurring under 150,000 miles.

Another problem that has affected a number of 2008 Nissan Frontier owners is the fuel gauge reading incorrectly. Some drivers have reported running out of gas in the middle of a trip because their gauge showed a quarter tank while they had much less fuel in the tank. This issue was addressed in a 2010 recall, which targeted trucks that could run out of gas due to the possibility of the tank shells deforming.

The 2008 Nissan Frontier has also been recalled six times, which is within the median range for a truck of this age. However, it is still a significant number of recalls for a single model year.

In terms of reliability, the 2008 Nissan Frontier has been found to be less reliable than the average new car, based on data from 2022 and 2023 models, as well as the Nissan brand scores. This is a concerning finding, as reliability is an important factor for many car buyers.

The 2008 Nissan Frontier has also been known to have issues with the check engine light due to a faulty fuel level sensor. This problem has been reported by a significant number of owners, making it one of the most common issues with the 2008 Frontier.

In addition to these specific issues, the 2008 Nissan Frontier has also been criticized for its cheap-feeling interior trim and the lack of a regular cab option. These issues may not be as critical as some of the other problems mentioned, but they can still impact the overall driving experience and the value of the vehicle.

In conclusion, the 2008 Nissan Frontier has had a number of issues that have affected its reliability and overall quality. From powertrain problems to faulty fuel gauges and recalls, there have been several areas of concern for owners of this model year. While the Frontier is known for its hardworking nature, these issues may give potential buyers pause and lead them to consider other options in the compact pickup truck market.

Any truck would be an improvement! It sounds like you've had a really tough time with your current one. From doors that wouldn't shut properly to multiple replacements of important parts, it's no wonder you're feeling frustrated. It's important to have a reliable vehicle that you can count on, and I hope you find one that meets your needs soon.

Congratulations on your recent purchase of a SE Kingcab v6! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the ride and the power it provides. The quiet interior cabin and smooth ride are definitely impressive features. While the turning radius may be a bit large, it's good to know that the visibility is great, making it easy to drive. With gas mileage of about 18-21 mpg, it's also a decent choice for a truck. It's interesting to hear that you considered the Tacoma or the Frontier, but ultimately chose the Frontier due to its great features and value for money.

  2. Theodore Schinner 2025-07-27

I understand your dilemma. Living in the Northeast and owning a 2WD Frontier (a 2000) myself, I have had a few days each year where I thought to myself, 'I'm getting a 4-wheel drive next time.' However, when the time came, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. As my primary commuter, I couldn't justify the 14 - 19 mpg. Nevertheless, this truck still gives you the feeling of having chosen the 4 X 4, with its high riding position, decidedly big-truck suspension and aggressive styling. If you can come to terms with it, you'll find that the four-cylinder engine is plenty tough enough for weekend chores, hauling a popup and merging onto the highway.

  3. Larry Spencer 2025-07-21

You have over 50,000 miles on your 2008 Frontier and it has performed well. The gas mileage on the highway is about 20.5 mpg and it is good in the snow (4wd). The ride is very smooth on the highway and you have not experienced any mechanical issues to date. However, the turning radius is an issue and it can be hard to park and turn in tight spaces. Additionally, the inside front cabin space is noticeably smaller than a Dakota (you have had 4 Dakotas). The Nissan zip type toneau cover is not the best as the cross bar support brackets break easily, it can't seal well at the corners and thus it leaks, and it is harder to remove than a snap-type cover. Lastly, the standard radio is not as good as it should be (one disc, power is low, no aux audio input). Overall, it sounds like you like your truck.

  4. Murl Kunze 2025-07-13

Great truck for the money! I'm impressed with Nissan, having owned two Tacomas, a GMC, and a Ford in the past 3 years. While it's not perfect, it's definitely better than most. The truck has more power than a Tacoma, although it doesn't have as much back seat room (in a crew cab). It gets respectable mileage, has excellent handling, and comes with well-done factory options like the spray-in bedliner and utilitrack system.

  5. Lucio VonRueden 2025-07-01

After conducting 6 months of thorough research on mid-size trucks, I narrowed down my options to Toyota and Nissan. While Toyota was more expensive by $5000 and had spongy brakes and a low seat position, Nissan offered a cheaper truck with a better seating position, which was important to me as I have a 34 inch inseam. The engine and transmission of the Nissan truck are super smooth, and I love the gentle rumble of the engine when it starts. Additionally, all controls such as the AC and radio are easy to reach, and the big knobs and well-illuminated dash make night driving a breeze. In my opinion, Nissan has surpassed Toyota and made a better truck. The frame is rigid, and the spray-on bedliner, utilitrak, and bed extender make for a great package. The SE power package is perfect for my needs.
