Common 2015 Nissan Frontier problems

The Nissan Frontier, a popular midsize pickup truck, has been known to have several common problems across its 2015 model year. These issues have been reported by numerous owners and are worth considering if you're in the market for a used Frontier.

  1. EVAP Issues: The Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) is responsible for capturing and storing fuel vapors from the fuel tank. In the Nissan Frontier, there have been reports of EVAP-related problems, such as the vehicle erratically spamming the dashboard warning message .
  2. Fuel Leaks: Some 2015 Nissan Frontier owners have reported fuel leaks, which can be caused by various factors, including faulty fuel lines, fuel injectors, or the fuel pressure regulator .
  3. Timing Issues: Timing problems in the Nissan Frontier can be caused by the timing chain and tensioner. The VQ40DE timing chain, in particular, has been known to face issues, so it's essential to be mindful of this component when considering a used Frontier .
  4. Transmission Slipping Out Of Gear Into Neutral: This issue affects many 2nd generation Frontier models, including the 2015 model year. The problem can be attributed to a misaligned shifter assembly or a small steel spring that becomes stuck inside the shifter, physically preventing it from engaging drive .
  5. Engine Stalling: Some owners have reported instances of the engine stalling, which can be caused by various factors, including electrical issues, sensor malfunctions, or fuel system problems .
  6. Car Going Into Limp Mode: Limp mode is a safety feature that reduces the vehicle's power and speed to prevent further damage when a severe issue is detected. In the Nissan Frontier, this can be caused by various problems, including transmission issues, engine problems, or electrical faults .
  7. Engine Fire: There have been reports of engine fires in the 2015 Nissan Frontier, which can be traced back to a wire harness used to install a circuit breaker that could cause a short circuit near the A-pillar .
  8. Wiring Harness Issues: Wiring harness problems can lead to various issues, including electrical faults, short circuits, and even engine fires. In the 2015 Nissan Frontier, a wire harness used to install a circuit breaker has been identified as a potential problem .
  9. Issues With The Rearview Camera: The rearview camera in the Nissan Frontier has been reported to have issues, which can affect visibility and safety when reversing .
  10. Ignition Switch Issues: Ignition switch problems can lead to various issues, including difficulty starting the vehicle or the car stalling while driving. In the 2015 Nissan Frontier, there have been reports of ignition switch-related problems .
  11. AEB Issues: Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB) systems are designed to help prevent or mitigate collisions. In the Nissan Frontier, there have been reports of AEB-related problems, which can affect the vehicle's safety features .
  12. Shifter Assembly Issues: The shifter assembly in the Nissan Frontier has been reported to refuse to shift in various ways, which can affect the vehicle's drivability and safety .
  13. The Car Rolling Away When In Park: This issue is a serious safety concern, as it can lead to the vehicle rolling away and causing accidents. In the 2015 Nissan Frontier, there have been reports of this problem, which is attributed to a faulty parking pawl or a malfunctioning brake system .
  14. Tank Splashing Fuel Out While Refueling: This issue affects models from 2014 to 2018, where the vehicle either won't accept more fuel or occasionally sends it back out. This problem is attributed to the fuel tank pressure becoming unstable when the tank reaches a specific level of capacity .
  15. Seats Issues: The seat anchor points on 2014 Nissan Frontier models appear to be attached to the car's body as intended, which can increase the risk of injury during a collision. Additionally, there is an issue related to loose seat belt brackets, where the seat belt anchor can easily break in a crash, resulting in the loss of seat restraint and thereby raising the risk of injury .

THE ENGINE RACES, YOU PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL HARDER, DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR MORE, RACING THE ENGINE EVEN MORE... ONCE THE CYCLE STARTS YOU MUST USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE OR THROW IT INTO NEUTRAL TO PREVENT FORWARD MOTION. THEN FINALLY TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE 'BRAKE' -WHICH ALSO RELEASES THE ACCELERATOR. THE BRAKES NEED TO ENGAGE BEFORE THEY DEPRESS TO THE SAME PLANE AS THE ACCELERATOR.

Negative 2015 Nissan Frontier car reviews

  1. Moshe Abshire 2025-01-08

I've been driving my Nissan truck for a year and a half now, and it has clocked 43500 miles. My daily commute is 48 miles each way to work, and I get an average of 16MPG. I bought this truck for a few reasons, and after some negotiation, I managed to get it for $27,300, which is a great price for a well-equipped 4x4 truck. Although other manufacturers have updated their small trucks, you could hardly do better than this one. The seats are comfortable, and the seat warmers are a nice touch. The web material is also nice, but the back seat is too small for long trips with even small-medium sized passengers. I have three kids, and it works out for shuttling them to and from school. However, on longer trips, they tend to complain. The storage under the rear seat is a nice feature. Recently, I found a puddle of rainwater inside the truck after returning from vacation. The antenna for the XM radio had come loose, and water leaked into the truck from the roof. Fortunately, there was no headliner damage. Despite being 18 months old, the dealer wouldn't fix it due to the mileage, and neither would Nissan. (Nissan's customer service is poor.) The truck runs well and has good power. For a rear-wheel-drive truck, it handles well, and the ABS works great. I have the rails in the truck bed, which is a nice option. When I added gasoline and maintenance estimates, it was by far cheaper than the Colorado or the Toyota.

  2. Tad Berge 2024-10-16

I am writing this because my Frontier has only 87,000 miles on it, which is not even close to being considered an old truck by today's standards! I followed all the service intervals suggested by the manufacturer, but now the check engine light is on after Concord Nissan serviced it. I have been going back and forth with them, only to find out that they are not fixing the check engine light problem. It seems like they are just turning the check engine light off without properly fixing the problem. Now, I am out $2,200 and have no solution. I am left with no choice but to contact the state of California DMV office and all appropriate agencies about this, which could take a long time. However, I am hopeful that this issue will be resolved soon.

  3. Marcelo O'Kon 2024-07-19

When I first bought the vehicle, it had an oil leak which was promptly repaired. Then, there was a fuel leak which was also taken care of under warranty. Later, I had to replace the bad engine mounts, which were also covered under warranty. Now, at 27,000 miles, I am experiencing some transmission slipping and I am planning to take it back to the dealer. I must say that the dealer has been great throughout all these issues and I would definitely buy from them again.

  4. Orin Auer 2024-05-09

Just when it reached the 90,000-mile mark, all the electrical (cruise control, airbags, Bluetooth, and radio control) on the steering wheel broke. We paid approximately $350.00 for the repair. It hurt me bc I hadn't even finished paying it. However, It is a nice size truck for a lady, Not too low and not too high. I owned a Jeep Wrangler for 14 years. Took it all over Texas and it gave me trouble until her 12 anniversary with more than 200,000 miles on it. I think the next vehicle will be a Jeep.

  5. Mavis Nienow 2024-03-11

I was searching for a new truck to replace my current vehicle, which has served me well for 44 years. I'm not sure if Nissan would be the right choice for me, though. While the six-cylinder engine has an iron block and aluminum heads, which could cause head gasket failure due to different rates of expansion and contraction, the timing chain is much better than a timing belt. However, Nissan has a poor rating for servicing their vehicles, which is a negative. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a manual transmission to go with the six-cylinder engine, which was a deal-breaker for me. Lastly, I was concerned about the parts and repair situation in fifteen years, so I decided to look for an older truck that might be more durable and offer me a few more good years. It's still unclear whether an older or newer truck would be better for my needs. It's like looking for a Baptist preacher in the Vatican - a difficult task from the start.

Positive 2015 Nissan Frontier car reviews

  1. Orlando Daniel 2025-01-09

I think this is a great truck! It offers excellent value compared to the Tacoma and the Colorado, which I find overpriced. It's becoming increasingly difficult to find small trucks these days, but this one is a solid and strong vehicle that sits higher than you might expect. The front seats are very comfortable, although I wouldn't recommend the back seats for kids - the extended cab (king cab) seats that flip down aren't the most comfortable. If you have a family, I'd suggest going for a crew cab. The truck has a full-sized feel, and I paid around $35k for it, which included a 100k warranty and all taxes. I love the way it looks, and the interior is nice too. My only complaint is that it doesn't have auto headlights - what's up with that? I have to remember to turn on my lights, which is something I haven't had to do in years. But overall, it has everything one would need, including navigation, a back-up camera, Bluetooth, and heated seats. I highly recommend it! Also, I'd like to add that my husband is 6'3 and 220, and he's very comfortable in this truck.

  2. Armando Will 2024-11-19

The 2015 Frontier SV with a 6-cylinder engine and automatic transmission boasts much better fuel efficiency than previous trucks. It has lots of power, is very comfortable, and provides a good ride while remaining quiet. With only 46k miles, it runs like new and is cheaper than a Toyota. I particularly appreciate the smaller doors behind the regular doors, which make using the space behind the seats much easier. In my opinion, it is better than the 4-door cab because you don't lose bed space. The V-6 engine provides more than adequate power for most uses, including towing small trailers and boats. Additionally, the seats are very comfortable.

  3. Monroe Heller 2024-11-05

Gas mileage is not great and the tire pressure monitor needs to be set at a lower pressure due to the rear tires wearing in the middle of the thread with no weight in the rear. However, I recently traded for a 2018 Ram which can carry a larger load, has the same mileage, and is more comfortable.

  4. Joshuah Hammes 2024-10-14

I bought a new Frontier SV crewcab back in 2015 because it was the most uncomplicated and best-priced option at the time. Now, 220,000 kms (138,000 miles) later, I'm still impressed by its simplicity and durability. Basic maintenance, such as oil changes, air filters, brakes, and tires, has been all that's needed. The only other repairs required were for the rear axle vent and a rear axle seal due to the plugged rear axle vent. I can't express enough how impressed I am by this truck. In fact, I recently purchased a low-mileage 2019 Pro4X, which will be my nice retirement truck, as my 2015 has slowly become a well-used and dinged-up work truck. While Frontiers may not be the coolest mid-size truck, I have to say that it has proven to be the lowest operating cost and most reliable truck I've ever owned.

  5. Ashton Medhurst 2024-09-16

I checked out Edmunds every day for three weeks while searching for a used pickup. Edmunds helped me become familiar with the prices and features available in my local market inventory. I appreciated that Nissan didn't make many annual changes and that parts were affordable. To determine if I wanted to buy this particular high-mileage (115,000) truck, I scheduled time with a mechanic and took it there during the test drive. For just $59, the mechanic provided me with a written evaluation, which took about an hour. The car lot that was selling the vehicle agreed to do everything on the list, including a transmission flush, oil and filter change, differential check, new wiper blades, and other things. It was fantastic to have the written list to support my request. Update: I purchased this 2015 pickup in the summer of 2020, and more than 3-1/2 years later, it's still going strong. Thank you, Edmunds, and thank you, Mr. Mechanic!
