Common 2005 Nissan Frontier problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Nissan Frontier 2005, several common problems have been identified:

  • Timing Chain Tensioner Guide Failure:
    • Another prevalent issue with the 2005 Nissan Frontier is the failure of the timing chain tensioner guide. This problem can cause engine damage, with the upper chain developing sharp edges that wear out the tensioner. If left unrepaired, this issue can lead to catastrophic engine failure. The problem was most common in the 2005-2007 models but persisted until 2010.
  • Coolant Leaks and Transmission Damage:
    • Many radiators in the 2005 Nissan Frontier were faulty and prone to leaking coolant fluid. This issue is significant as it can lead to transmission damage, emphasizing the importance of addressing radiator problems promptly.
  • Sunroof Rattles and Explodes:
    • In the 2005-2019 Nissan Frontier models, sunroof issues such as rattling and even exploding have been reported, indicating potential safety concerns.
  • Inaccurate Fuel Gauge Readings:
    • Some owners have experienced problems with the fuel gauge in the Nissan Frontier, where it provides inaccurate readings. This issue can lead to inconvenience and potential fuel-related problems.

These common problems with the 2005 Nissan Frontier highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any signs of mechanical issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

What is the problem with the 2005 Nissan Frontier?

The 2005 Nissan Frontier is notorious for transmission failure. It's actually caused by a faulty seal in the radiator. The radiator leaks, allowing the coolant to get into the transmission. It dilutes the transmission oil, resulting in a complete failure of the transmission.

What year was a bad year for a Nissan Frontier?

Nissan Frontiers with automatic transmissions manufactured between 2005 and 2008 have a defective radiator design. The fluid lines for the truck's transmission pass through the radiator. Any leaks or problems with the radiator can instantly destroy both the radiator and the transmission on these Frontier models.

How many miles does a 2005 Nissan Frontier last?

With proper care and maintenance, this truck is designed to last over two decades and can easily clock more than 200,000 miles or up to 20 years of service. This long-lasting performance is thanks to the Frontier's robust engine, superior corrosion protection, and high-quality production standards.

What year Nissan Frontiers had transmission problems?

Transmission Problems

Car Problem Zoo reported that 2005-2008 model years have the most complaints. Similarly, Car Complaints identified Nissan Frontier transmission problems as the number one type of issue with the truck. The radiators in the 2005-2008 Frontier tended to rupture before the truck reached 10,000 miles.

  • Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 ARMADA, TITAN, INFINITI QX56 AND MODEL YEAR 2005-2006 FRONTIER, PATHFINDER AND XTERRA VEHICLES. THE INTELLIGENT POWER DISTRIBUTION MODULE (IPDM) ASSEMBLY CONTAINS AN ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) RELAY THAT HAS A DIODE FOR ELECTRICAL CURRENT NOISE REDUCTION. THE ECM RELAY MAY ALLOW SILICON VAPOR TO FORM AND, OVER TIME, THE SILICON EVAPORATES FROM THE DIODE MOLDING WHICH CAUSES SILICON OXIDE TO DEVELOP ON THE ECM RELAY CONTACT DUE TO ARCING.
  • Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE ENGINE STALLING INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ECM RELAY INSIDE THE IPDM ASSEMBLY. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 6, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL CAP TETHER PIN ASSEMBLY WITH A MODIFIED ONE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 24, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Negative 2005 Nissan Frontier car reviews

  1. Jovany Lebsack 2024-06-11

The dealer here in Asheville, NC said that the clutch 'got burned out'. I find it strange because I have been driving stick shifts since I was 16 (I'm 57), have driven trucks and cars over 125,000 miles and owned them for over nine years, and have NEVER had a clutch problem. It seems like something's not right here.

Positive 2005 Nissan Frontier car reviews

  1. Aric Jakubowski 2024-10-07

I previously owned a Silverado with the 5.3L V8, but this truck with the 4.0 V6 is just as powerful, if not more so. Living near the city, I wanted something more agile, but still with plenty of muscle for all my excursions, and this truck is perfect for that. The 4WD makes it incredibly capable. I absolutely love the NISMO package, and with that, you really don't have to do anything to this truck, except maybe upgrade to bigger tires. The interior design is spot on, with controls that are easy and straightforward to use. I would highly recommend opting for the Rockford sound system if possible, and the 6-Disc CD Changer is also pretty convenient.

  2. Raheem Homenick 2024-10-05

I recently purchased a 2005 Frontier King Cab in Red with the NISMO package. This truck is amazing! It boasts impressive horsepower and torque, and offers a variety of cool features that you can add on. The ride is smooth and it outperforms other midsize trucks with V6 engines. I opted for the Audio Package, Bed Package with liner, in-cabin microfilter, and alarm to enhance my experience.

  3. Abner Powlowski 2024-09-29

After owning this truck for about a year and a half, I have grown to love it even more than when it was new. I have had the opportunity to haul and tow with it, drive it in deep snow, take it off-road, and load and unload an ATV and a motorcycle several times. With 47,000 Km (~29,200 mi) on the clock, I have come to appreciate the incredible balance that Nissan has struck between car-like handling and performance, and truck-like utility. This is my daily commuter, and I can't say enough about the comfort, handling, versatility, and that incredible engine. I am so glad that I bought a mid-size truck. It gets great MPG and I can even pull a 30ft. camping trailer with an ATV in the back and three passengers with luggage.

  4. Santiago Strosin 2024-08-13

This truck is really powerful for a midsize truck, has okay gas mileage, and looks great. I'm very happy with my purchase.

  5. Zane Koss 2024-08-10

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I absolutely love my Nismo. I've been using it every day on my tobacco farm and it's been a real workhorse. I've taken it through some pretty rough terrain and it's held up like a champ. I even managed to pull a load of 14,500 lbs with ease - it outperformed any half-ton truck I've ever used! I did get stuck a couple of times, but that was only because I sank straight down to the chassis - you could barely see the tires! Overall, I think it's an awesome 4-wheeling machine and definitely worth the investment. Thanks for listening!
