Common 2001 Nissan Frontier problems
The 2001 Nissan Frontier has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. One of the issues is related to the sunroof, where some owners have experienced rattles and even explosions of the sunroof glass, leading to a lawsuit against Nissan. This issue is attributed to a faulty tempering process used by Nissan since 2008, affecting not only the Frontier but also other models like the Xterra and Sentra.
Another problem reported by owners is related to the EVAP system, causing 'gas splash back' at the pump due to clogs in the system. This issue can lead to gas spills and is a concern for Nissan Frontier owners.
Transmission problems are also common in the 2001 Nissan Frontier, with owners reporting issues such as the transmission going out, stopping working, or having fuel system leaks. These issues can lead to significant repair costs and inconvenience for owners.
Excessive corrosion is another problem reported by some owners, particularly in the 2002 Frontier model. This issue can affect various parts of the vehicle, including the steering system, leading to limited movement and potential cracking of the steering shaft.
Furthermore, the 2001 Nissan Frontier has been reported to have issues with the fuel system, with owners experiencing leaks and other problems. This issue can lead to reduced fuel efficiency and potential safety hazards, such as fuel leaks and fires.
Steering problems are also reported by some owners, with the lower steering column joint developing corrosion that limits movement. If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, it may lead to cracking of the steering shaft, potentially causing a loss of steering control.
In summary, the 2001 Nissan Frontier has several common problems reported by owners, including sunroof rattles and explosions, EVAP clogs and gas spills, transmission issues, excessive corrosion, fuel system leaks, and steering problems. These issues can lead to significant repair costs and inconvenience for owners, and potential safety hazards.
What year was a bad year for a Nissan Frontier?
Nissan Frontiers with automatic transmissions manufactured between 2005 and 2008 have a defective radiator design. The fluid lines for the truck's transmission pass through the radiator. Any leaks or problems with the radiator can instantly destroy both the radiator and the transmission on these Frontier models.
How many miles can you get out of a 2001 Nissan Frontier?
Most owners get 100,000 miles. Some owners, have got over 200,000 miles.
What year Nissan Frontiers had transmission problems?
Transmission Problems
Car Problem Zoo reported that 2005-2008 model years have the most complaints. Similarly, Car Complaints identified Nissan Frontier transmission problems as the number one type of issue with the truck. The radiators in the 2005-2008 Frontier tended to rupture before the truck reached 10,000 miles.
Is Nissan Frontier reliable?
The Nissan Frontier Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 1st out of 7 for midsize trucks.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
- VIN: 1N6ED27Y21C
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I am the original owner of the vehicle which has just 66,000 original miles. I have smelled fuel and had a service engine soon light on for years. I have taken the vehicle into various shops and dealerships who failed to find a fuel tank leak that now turns out to have been from corrosion of the tank flange as early as 5 years after manufacturing. A check of various online owners forums suggests this is a known defect on Nissan Frontier and XTerra trucks. Once gas began physically leaking out of my tank, I contacted the dealer who said my VIN was not part of any fuel tank recall and I would have to pay for any repairs myself. This is a dangerous and irresponsible situation for Nissan Frontier and XTerra drivers which Nissan needs to fix. Other examples of rusted fuel tank flanges. BATTERY WAS FINE..PASSENGERS HAD RECENTLY SAID THAT THEY NOTICED A FUEL SMELL, BUT I CAN'T SMELL (A PHYSICAL HANDICAP OF MINE).; CALLED AAA- IT WAS THEN THAT WE NOTICED THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING OUT OF THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK, THE FUEL PUMP WIRE THAT SUPPLIES POWER TO THE FUEL PUMP WAS BROKEN. CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO A LOCAL GARAGE. CALLED NISSAN DEALER AND HE SAID 'YOUR CAR IS OLD, JUST REPLACE THE FUEL TANK. BUT, THE DESIGN OF THE GAS TANK IS SUCH THAT THERE IS A 'GULLY' WHERE WATER GETS TRAPPED ON THE DESIGN OF THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. NISSAN REFUSES TO ADMIT THAT THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW THAT IS CAUSING THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANKS TO CORRODE; AND THIS IS INDEED A SAFETY ISSUE! AS A MECHANICAL ENGINEER WHO SPECIALIZES IN METALS, IT IS DEFINITELY A POOR DESIGN; I HAVE OWNED AND WORKED ON CARS MY ENTIRE LIFE, AND HAVE NEVER SEEN A FUEL TANK CORRODE THROUGH. ALL OF THE LOCAL MECHANICS/GARAGES IN MY AREA TELL ME "THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM IN NISSAN FRONTIERS- WE FIX THEM ALL OF THE TIME." *TR

This truck not only looks great, it is! I love the front end design, and receive compliments on its look wherever I go, mostly from men. Old and young, they love the look of my Frontier Crew Cab pickup, which is black in color. The chrome looks especially good. While not a large pickup, it is perfect for smaller loads, such as gardening tools and plants, furniture, and even groceries are handy with the extender folded inside neatly!

I recently purchased a truck with 43k miles and it's in great condition. This is our third vehicle, following a Passat for speed and an Explorer for road trips. The truck drives great and I can take turns hard with enough acceleration to pass other drivers. It has a strong 4-cylinder engine and I got 26 mpg on the first tank. After kicking a lot of tires and dealing with many salespeople, I found that this truck had the best combination of comfort, price, and reliability. The dealer was also quite reasonable to deal with, and I would highly recommend them. You can find them at http://www.jaymitsubishi.com/en_US/.

I was looking for a small truck that could handle pulling my boat and had the get-up-and-go of a car. While the 6-disc CD indash is a nice feature, it could use a bit more wattage. The highways around here can be a bit rough, so the ride can be bumpy at times. Unfortunately, the tires are an odd size and only Firestone makes them for the Supercharged model. On the bright side, this truck really shines at highway speeds. The only downside is the gas mileage, which is not great. I drive about 26 miles each way to work, mostly on the highway, and I only average 14mpg. I'm considering going back to a full-size truck. If I'm going to drive a vehicle with 18mpg or less, it might as well be a full-size with a V8...

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your truck! It sounds like you made a great choice based on the styling and reviews. It's wonderful to hear that you haven't had any complaints or trouble in the 13K miles you've driven it.

While this truck may not be for everyone, it has some areas that could use improvement. The 3.3 engine may be underpowered for some, and the gas mileage is not as good as one might expect. Additionally, the handling could be better. However, with proper care and maintenance, this truck can still be a reliable option. That being said, there are other trucks on the market that may better suit your needs. For example, the 98' S10 is a great option that I would highly recommend.

I've had the truck for a couple of years now and, while I've had a few issues with it, it has been a good truck overall. I've put more than my fair share of abuse on it, such as offroading and heavy towing, and it's held up pretty well. I haven't had any major problems with it. One thing that could be improved is the front bumper, which is quite flimsy. I've had to replace it twice after offroading in the snow.

I've been really impressed with this pickup! The only issue I've had is that the rubber seals around the plastic fender flares are coming unglued. I'm hoping it's covered by the warranty. I've driven it for a few 8-hour days and it's surprisingly comfortable for a regular cab bench seat.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share that my dessert runner is 18 months old with 17000 miles. Although I don't drive off road or drive it hard, this week the bearings went out in the engine. However, Nissan is installing a new engine and they assured me that it was nothing I did, it just happens. Thank you for your time!

After 43,000 miles, the rear-end failed due to heavy usage. Despite being used to haul a 1000 pound load 10-12 times, it was only used for light weight items otherwise. The 4 cylinder version may suffer from acceleration underperformance, but it boasts good fuel mileage. It is important to note that the dealership may not readily suggest that a repair may be covered under warranty, but it is important to assert your rights as a consumer.
