Common Nissan Frontier 2018 problems
The 2018 Nissan Frontier, while not as up-to-date as many other small trucks on the market, has proven to be a reliable vehicle with some minor throttle body and brake wear issues reported.
One of the most widespread complaints is delayed response from the gas pedal, which shows up at around 20,000 miles. This problem is usually caused by a damaged throttle body, reducing the air-to-fuel ratio. Replacing the throttle body typically fixes the problem, costing around $450.
Another common issue is premature brake wear, which tends to show up at roughly 15,000 miles. If you use your truck to tow a trailer or haul a lot of weight in the bed, the front brakes may wear down more quickly than expected.
Additionally, some 2018 Nissan Frontier owners have reported peeling paint, which can be a cosmetic issue that may require repainting or touch-ups to address.
When it comes to recalls, the NHTSA has issued two recalls for the 2018 Nissan Frontier. The first recall affected more than 1.2 million vehicles due to a blank backup camera display image, which increases the likelihood of a collision. The second recall affected more than 150,000 trucks due to an ignition switch that may turn off, increasing the likelihood of a collision
Despite these issues, the 2018 Nissan Frontier has received positive reviews from critics and owners. Consumer Reports praises the truck's nimble handling and strong engine, while Edmunds enjoys the smooth suspension but criticizes the cheap interior. Kelley Blue Book users give the 2018 Frontier a high rating for its comfortable cabin at highway speeds, but note that off-road performance could be better.
In summary, while the 2018 Nissan Frontier has some common problems such as delayed response from the gas pedal, premature brake wear, and peeling paint, it is generally seen as a decent midsize truck with positive reviews from critics and owners. However, potential buyers should be aware of the recalls issued by the NHTSA and consider the costs of any necessary repairs as the truck ages.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-30
- VIN: 1N6DD0ER2JN
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THIS TRUCK IS A 2018 NISSAN FRONTIER THAT HAS ~10K MILES AND IS DRIVEN DAILY. IN THE EVENINGS IT IS KEPT OUTSIDE. RECENTLY, A HORRIBLE ODOR BEGAN COMING FROM THE VENTILATION SYSTEM. I IMMEDIATELY STARTED DISMANTLING THE PASSENGER DASH, REMOVED THE CABIN AIR FILTERS, AND DISCOVERED A DEAD MOTHER RAT AND 4 OFFSPRING IN THE COMPARTMENT ABOVE THE FILTERS. IF I HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM, THE TRUCK WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY UNUSABLE. HOW WERE THEY ABLE TO GAIN ENTRY? I AM GUESSING THROUGH SOME FRESH AIR INTAKE THAT IS OBVIOUSLY OPEN TO THE EXTERIOR. NISSAN NEEDS TO ADD A VERY SIMPLE WIRE MESH COVER TO THE OFFENDING ENTRANCE. TO ALLOW ACCESS TO A FULLY GROWN RAT, IT IS ASSUREDLY 2-3" IN DIAMETER! THANKFULLY, I WAS ABLE TO CATCH THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, IT IS SUMMER, HIGH TEMPERATURES, AND HAD THE TRUCK BEEN LEFT UNATTENDED FOR SEVERAL DAYS, THE RESULTING ODOR MAY HAVE NEVER BEEN REMEDIATED. MY CONCERN IS, IF I CAN'T FIND AND COVER THE OPENING, THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-02-05
- VIN: 1N6AD0EV6JN
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I BOUGHT MY 2018 FRONTIER WITH 40K MILES ON IT BACK IN APRIL 2018. I NOW HAVE ABOUT 56K MILES ON IT. OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS IT GOT HARDER AND HARDER TO PUT GAS IN IT AND FOR A MONTH NOW IT SHUTS OFF MULTIPLE TIMES AND OR SPITS GAS OUT WHEN I TRY TO FILL IT. YES, WHILE FILLING THE TANK THE GAS PUMP WILL SHUT OFF AND GAS WILL SPIT OUT OF THE FILLER TUBE AND SPILL ONTO THE GROUND! TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL DEALER AND ASSUMED IT WOULD BE FIXED UNDER WARRANTY NOT KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS COMMON ISSUE. DEALER LOOKED AT IT AND TOLD ME $1,600 AND SUGGESTED REPLACING FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY, CANISTER FILLER, CANISTER ASSEMBLY, CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY AND EVAP CONTROL SYSTEM PRESSURE SENSOR. THE PAPERWORK SAYS 'PLEASE CHECK AND ADVISE FOUND DTC FOR VENT VALVE P0448 SERVICE BULLETIN NTB15-079.' THEY SAID MY VEHICLE WAS OVER THE 35K GENERAL WARRANTY MILEAGE. I DID ONE MINUTE OF RESEARCH ON THE WEB AND FOUND A TSB AND NISSAN WEBSITE FOR THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT (15YRS/150K). I CALLED THE DEALER BACK AND SAID WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE TSB, THE NISSAN WEBSITE AND THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR 15 YEARS WITH MULTIPLE MODELS OF NISSAN VEHICLES? NOT MUCH OF A RESPONSE EXCEPT YOU CAN CALL NISSAN. I CALLED NISSAN AND WAS ASSIGNED A CASE MANAGER. THEY EXPLAINED THAT THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT WAS VIN SPECIFIC AND DID NOT APPLY TO MY VEHICLE. HE SAID HE WOULD REVIEW THE CASE AND GET BACK TO ME IN 4 DAYS! HE CALLED BACK AND SAID THEY HAD DECIDED NOT TO HELP ME AT ALL WITH THE REPAIR. SO, HERE I AM WITH A 2018 VEHICLE AND NISSAN WANTS ME TO SPEND $1600 TO FIX THIS ISSUE THEY HAVE HAD FOR 15 YEARS. THE SAME ISSUE THEY ARE COVERING FOR THOUSANDS OF OTHER CARS UP TO 15 YEARS OLD WITH THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT. - VIN: 1N6AD0ER5JN
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: VEHICLE WAS STOPPED, FOOT ON BRAKE, EXITING A PUBLIC PARKING LOT, WHEN SUDDENLY ENGINE ACCELERATED RAPIDLY AND WHEELS WERE SCREECHING. THE PASSENGER OF VEHICLE HAD TO PLACE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL, THEN PARK TO STOP VEHICLE FROM MOVING FORWARD. THIS ACTION DID NOT STOP ENGINE FROM REVVING AT EXTREME HIGH SPEED--RATHER, THE ENGINE WOULD SLOW DOWN AFTER ABOUT 3-5 SECONDS. THIS HAPPENED 5 TIMES, WITHIN A 10 MINUTE 4 MILE DRIVE, BUT NOT CONSISTENTLY. DRIVING APPROX. 15-25 MPH BETWEEN STOP SIGNS: BRAKE WOULD BE APPLIED AND THEN ENGINE AND TRUCK WOULD RACE FORWARD. EACH TIME THE PASSENGER WAS REQUIRED TO PUT SHIFT LEVER IN NEUTRAL TO AVOID HITTING VEHICLES OR OBJECTS IN FRONT OF VEHICLE. THE DRIVER WOULD CLEARLY STATE THAT FOOT WAS NOT ON THE GAS PEDAL.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-08-05
- VIN: 1N6ADOCW5JN
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: THE THROTTLE CONTROL, FOOT PEDAL, HAS DEAD SPOTS THAT HAPPEN WHEN LEAVING A STOP SIGN, GREEN LIGHTS, PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC. ALSO CLIMBING A HILL WHEN YOU STEP ON THE GAS NOTHING HAPPENS UNTIL THE TRANSMISSION KICKS DOWN THEN YOU GO TO FAST. THIS HAPPENS OCCASIONALLY. IT IS BETTER IF YOU TURN OF THE OVERDRIVE DID IT STILL HAPPENS. I HAVE HAD IT BACK TO THE DEALER 3 TIMES.DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE TRANSMISSION, REPROGRAMMED THE THROTTLE BODY AND THEN REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY. WHEN I PULL OUT INTO TRAFFIC I DO NOT KNOW IF THE TRUCK IS GOING TO MOVE OR NOT. SOMETIME THERE IS ABOUT A SECOND DELAY UNTIL IT CATCHES AND THEN SOMETIMES IT CHIRPS THE TIRES. I HAVE JUST OVER 1000 MILES ON THIS TRUCK AND DO NOT FEEL SAFE. THIS IS MY FORTH NISSAN FRONTIER, I NEVER EXPERIENCED ANY FEAR IN DRIVING THE OTHER TRUCK. I BELIEVE IT AND ANY OTHERS WITH THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE RECALLED OR THE TRUCKS REPLACED. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE I BOUGHT THE TRUCK.
Nissan Frontier 2018 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the Nissan Frontier 2018.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
- Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2017 Nissan NV200, Sentra, NV3500 Van, NV3500 Bus, NV200 Taxi, NV1500, NV2500 Van, Chevrolet City Express, 2017-2018 Frontier, Versa Note, and Versa Sedan vehicles that have a mechanical (physical) key ignition system. In these models, over time, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the vehicle stalls, it can increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the production information on the ignition switch, and replace it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2018. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669.

Congratulations on your new purchase! It sounds like you did your research and made a great decision with the 2018 Nissan Frontier SV. Despite the fuel economy, it seems like you are really enjoying the truck and all of its features. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

The Nissan Frontier is the best mid-size truck on the market. I've owned two Hardbodies before this one, and I can confidently say that you just can't beat a Nissan truck. They are tough, dependable, and always get the job done.

I recently traded in my 2010 Nissan Frontier SE King Cab 4WD, which I had bought new and put 80,000 miles on, for a new 2018 SV Crew Cab 4WD. I must say, I had absolutely no problems with my 2010 truck. Everything worked perfectly, making it the best vehicle I have ever owned, period.

This is the best truck I have had. I've owned two GMCs, both new, and unfortunately, they have given me nothing but problems. If you're looking for a good little truck, I recommend buying one new. The ride is very good and overall, I cannot find a better truck for the money.

I have a 2018 black midnight edition and it has been reliable on city streets and in the mountains. However, there are some strange flaws that I have noticed. For instance, when driving from Texas to Colorado, the check engine light always comes on about halfway there. At first, I thought this was happening because of the altitude or the cold air, but it would also always turn off about halfway home. In the end though, I have determined that it goes on because not all gas stations in the US offer 87. Sometimes you have to get 86, and that seems to make the engine a little nervous. I have also noticed some transmission-related issues. For example, when I'm at a stop sign waiting for traffic to pass, the truck doesn't move immediately after I step on the gas. After a few seconds of accelerating, it finally jerks and goes. While the vehicle comes with Bluetooth, it doesn't always engage, and the only way to get it to engage is to turn the truck off completely and restart the ignition. This has been particularly annoying when I get a call several minutes into a trip but am not in a good position to stop and restart the car. However, this issue has been a lot better since I updated from an iPhone 6S Plus to iPhone 13 Pro. The steering wheel has some quick access buttons to skip songs, turn up volume, set cruise control, and accelerate/decelerate, but it would be nice to have a play button on the steering wheel, too. The storage compartment under the back seats isn't very useful because the plastic mold under it is very undulated and obtrusive. It would be nice if it was designed to fit a suitcase under there. Lastly, I was disappointed that the car did not come with a factory installed roof rack. Additionally, when the car was on the lot, I assumed it had auto lights because the sensor was in plain sight on the dashboard.I found out that the auto light functionality requires a different blinker handle set up, which unfortunately can be quite expensive. It would be great if safety features like this were standard, especially if Nissan wants to compete with other top players in the truck industry. Although my vehicle came with Hankook tires, I had to switch to another brand because the steel banding inside the tires has been coming apart lately, causing the tires to concave in the middle. This results in a very bumpy ride and puts the driver at risk of a serious blowout. Additionally, I noticed that the USB port does not generate enough power to restart a dead phone. Instead, you have to charge it with the cigarette lighter port, which can be inconvenient. While this is a flaw, it's important to note that the vehicle has many other great features.

The car can be quite skittish on the road, so it's important to keep your eyes on the road at all times. Additionally, there is a strange light (secure light) that flashes on the dashboard every few seconds, regardless of whether the ignition is on or off, the doors are locked or unlocked, or the windows are up or down. It's unclear what this light signifies, as nobody seems to know. If you park the car in the garage, the doors will automatically lock after a certain period of time, which can be inconvenient if you accidentally leave your keys in the ignition. Finally, the alarm buzzer can be difficult to hear if you leave your headlights on and the key in the ignition with the door open. Unfortunately, the dealer has stated that these issues are non-fixable due to the design of the car.

I decided to spend a little more and get the Tacoma. Overall, I think I made a wise choice. Everything about the Frontier just felt average at best. Plus, Tacomas hold their value much better.

This is a great little truck to get you from point A to point B. However, the crew cab has limited leg room for adults. I have owned this truck since November 2018 and it has been reliable. The truck gets a relatively good 20mpg mostly. The back of the bed is pretty small for a truck unless you don't have a lot to haul. The truck tows well but your mpg will drop in performance. One issue I have had is with the hub assemblies, which can be expensive to replace. Unfortunately, Nissan does not cover this and the bumper to bumper warranty is also quite expensive. However, the truck has great features like a backup camera, USB ports, and Bluetooth. It is very economical and has everything a new truck should have. If you are looking for a truck for work, hunting, and fishing, and hauling things, I would not recommend it. But if you just need something to travel and go back and forth to work, I do recommend it. Just keep in mind that if you are a pretty hefty person like myself, you may not be comfortable on long rides. Overall, this truck needs a few upgrades, such as more cabin room, better hub assemblies, bigger and more comfortable seats, and a standard short bed. As far as controls go, everything is good. I have a Silverado with a tire pressure monitoring system and I hate it because the batteries die every 5 to 10 years and have to be replaced or you have to look at a low pressure light the whole time. But that's a whole other story!
