Gmc Canyon problems

gmc logo

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common Gmc Canyon problems

Based on complaints from owners of GMC Canyon cars, common problems include:

  1. AC Blower Inop Due to Failed Resistor: Owners have reported issues with the AC blower due to a failed resistor. This can lead to a lack of proper ventilation and cooling inside the vehicle, especially in hot weather conditions.
  2. Worn Valve Seats May Cause Engine Misfire: Another common problem is worn valve seats causing engine misfires. This issue can result in poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential long-term damage to the engine if not addressed promptly.
  3. Check Engine Light Due to Gas Cap Issue: Owners have experienced instances where the check engine light illuminates due to a gas cap issue. A loose or faulty gas cap can trigger the check engine light, indicating a problem with the vehicle's emissions system.
  4. CD Player Inop: Some owners have reported problems with the CD player in their GMC Canyon. Issues with the CD player can range from CDs not playing properly to the unit not functioning at all, affecting the entertainment system in the vehicle.
  5. Exhaust System Problems: Complaints have been made regarding various exhaust system issues, including muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, and heat shield problems. These issues can lead to increased noise, reduced engine performance, and potential safety hazards if not addressed.
  6. Electrical System Concerns: Electrical problems such as battery issues, electrical loss while driving, and rare reports of fires have been highlighted by owners. Electrical system malfunctions can impact various components of the vehicle, affecting its overall performance and safety.
  7. Transmission Troubles: Transmission problems, including not shifting properly, have been a significant concern among GMC Canyon owners. Issues with the transmission can lead to difficulties in gear shifting, affecting the vehicle's drivability and overall performance.

These common problems reported by GMC Canyon owners highlight a range of issues that can impact the vehicle's performance, safety, and overall driving experience. Addressing these concerns promptly through proper maintenance and repairs is crucial to ensure the longevity and reliability of the GMC Canyon.

Gmc Canyon

Is the GMC Canyon a reliable truck?

According to motorbiscuit.com, the GMC Canyon is the most reliable choice from the GMC brand. It boasts decent scores and excellent customer reports thanks to the low frequency of necessary repairs for the machine. It is tough and will last. Second and third place go to the GMC Terrain and the GMC Sierra 1500.

How long will a GMC Canyon engine last?

You will find that the GMC Canyon reaches around 200,000 miles with excellent care. Thus, high mileage for the vehicle is anywhere around or higher than 150,000 miles. Once it passes this point, it's far more likely that the vehicle will experience issues that are irreparable or more expensive than the Canyon itself.

Are there any recalls on a GMC Canyon?

Vehicles Recalled

GMC Canyon pickup trucks manufactured between Sep. 29, 2022, and Dec. 15, 2023. The problem: Improperly calibrated front camera module (FCM) software could cause the vehicle's AEB system to activate even if there isn't an obstacle present.

What is the most common problem with the Chevy Colorado?

Perhaps the most common issue found in the Chevy Colorado is the tendency for the engine to misfire (or backfire) — something that's been documented to impact models as old as 2004 and as new as 2016.

  • Summary: While driving, the power steering stops working. I was traveling at approx 55 mph with my daughter in the car and the power steering quit. Alert lights came on the dash. I managed to slow down and turn off the highway. I turned the truck off and when I turned it back on it was fine. Drove for another 10 minutes to get home and it went out again at a stop light. I found a place to pull over and turned it off and back on and it stopped doing it again. There is a recall for this issue on this vehicle but evidently mine was not on the recall or was fixed prior to me owning it. I have not checked with the dealership, but I’m assuming it will be a large bill to get it taken care of. Hopefully it does not go out at a bad time.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-12
  • VIN: 1GTG6CEN7N1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Key gets stuck in ignition when attempting to turn off vehicle. This leaves people stranded with their vehicles in hot/cold weather, dangerous areas, etc... Many people have been bypassing this problem by removing steering column and disconnecting a wire that allows the key to be released. But disconnection of said wire allows the key to be removed and shut off at any time, including driving down the highway at 70mph, serious safety hazard for driver and those on the road. Dealer has confirmed this issue and currently working on repairing my vehicle but it is a widespread issue with certain GM vehicles to include the canyon, colorado, camaro, and equinox.
Gmc Canyon 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-22
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-07
  • VIN: 1GTG6CE3XG1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Electric power steering stops working and the power steering assist warning light is illuminated. Once the truck is restarted the problem goes away but will come back at some point while driving. This has happened multiple times at multiple speeds, the first time it happened I was going over 70 MPH. With no power steering it is nearly impossible to turn the steering wheel since I only have one hand available to use on the steering wheel. Had I not had a passenger with me to help turn the wheel I would have crashed. I took the truck to the dealer and they told me it was the same problem that the 2015's had had on a recall but my truck was a early 2016 so I was not part of the recall. The dealer was happy to fix it at a cost of $2916.27 My truck only has 27135 miles, but is to old for warranty coverage.

Latest negative Gmc Canyon car reviews

  1. Bruce Lesch 2025-03-26

    Vehicle year: 2018

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 GMC Canyon Diesel. I've had it for almost 18 months now and have driven almost 32,000 miles. Overall, I really love the truck, especially the diesel engine and the great MPG. It's been a reliable daily driver and I've had no issues hauling a trailer or boat. Of course, like any vehicle, there have been a few minor issues, but they were all fixed under warranty. The only thing that really bothered me was the low height of the front air dam, which made it difficult to go over parking curbs. I'm 6'1

  2. Coty Effertz 2025-03-18

    Vehicle year: 2021

I have the 4x4 Denali Crew Cab, which has a lot of great features. However, I'm disappointed that GMC now charges a monthly fee to use their phone app, which used to be free. It costs $15.00 a month and you can't send destinations or use the remote lock or start without paying. On top of that, GM charges an extra fee for updated maps for navigation, in addition to the OnStar subscription or Sirius XM. Unfortunately, my navigation won't recognize certain destinations like Estes Park or Colorado Texas, and the voice recognition to call someone doesn't work properly. This is a safety issue and I hope it can be resolved soon. The leather seats are basically seat covers and they are quite firm. Although the chrome on the side mirrors looks nice, it creates terrible reflections when I'm photographing wildlife from my vehicle. Overall, I'm frustrated with GM charging extra for things that should be included in the vehicle, especially since it's approaching $50,000. I miss the phone controls from my 2014 Sierra, which worked perfectly. When you invest this much in a vehicle, you expect all the features to work properly. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my Denali and hope that these concerns can be addressed soon.

  3. Brett Casper 2025-03-11

    Vehicle year: 2005

After purchasing the vehicle, it was noted that there was a bad water leakage on the passenger side under the dash that shorted out the OnStar system and caused the computer to error. The problem was found to be a bad lead seam over the windshield. As a result of the computer error, one of the cylinders runs rich, and there is a crack in the exhaust manifold, which has led to a decrease in fuel efficiency to only 11 mpg. Additionally, there have been issues with the remote entry system, as the tumblers in the door and back gate had been miskeyed. There have also been problems with the electrical connectors under the vehicle rusting, leading to a loss of plate lights and other exterior lights. Despite the vehicle being only 18 months old, GM has provided little help. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to assist you further.

  4. Hazle Haag 2025-03-10

    Vehicle year: 2020

I recently purchased a 2020 Colorado and after 4 weeks of driving it, I noticed it began to jerk. Despite my husband's suggestion that it was due to the 4 cyl, it turned out to be something else. While driving 70 on the highway, the jerking became worse and I immediately took it to the dealership. After 4 weeks, they informed me that it needed a new alternator, which was surprising for a new truck. Unfortunately, I had not even made my first truck payment yet. I requested a replacement vehicle, but was told by the repair department manager that it was not possible and GMC does not offer that option. I wrote a negative review on the dealership and filed a complaint with my credit union loan department. I also contacted the dealership's general manager directly. Within two weeks, they found me a new 2020 Canyon, transferred my step bars to the new truck, sprayed my bed and gave me a rubber, sprayed floor lining. I was happy with the replacement and the speed of it, but I still have concerns about the alternator issue. GMC has always been my go-to vehicle, but now I have some doubts.

Hey there! I noticed that you got the SLT with Tow package. That's awesome! It's great that you have 4wd for the winter and all season street biased tires. They're still pretty good off-road too! I understand that you struggled a bit when towing a 4,000 LB dual axle boat, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. Keep up the good work!

The headlamp switch and 4wd switch are located on the lower-left dash, but visibility is poor due to the steering wheel. To see the setting, you really have to move your head off the windshield and under the steering wheel. When getting in and out of the truck, it's easy to bump the switches with your knee without realizing it, so it's important to check every time. I've been leasing this truck for 6 weeks now and have noticed that the 4wd seems to drag when first moving. I've accidentally left it on Auto or 4wd High before and had to stop completely to reset it. The same thing has happened with the headlight lamp switch, where I thought I was in auto but was actually in full headlamp mode. As for gas mileage, the best average I've gotten is 16.6, but between 0-40 miles/hour, you're lucky to get 8-12 miles/gallon. The truck is rated for 17 City - 21 Highway, and I've found that on the highway, I can get 18-20 miles/gallon if I play lightly on the gas pedal, with slow acceleration and coasting when reaching top speed. However, you really have to play with the gas pedal to get the most out of it. The transmission shifting from 0-20 miles/hour is not smooth, and you have to barely touch the gas pedal to get a smooth shift. Otherwise, the truck revs from 1500/2000rpm to 3500 and quickly drops back to 1000 rpm, causing the truck to jerk during that shift. My old 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trak was much smoother in this regard. Lastly, I purchased a bed extender and double fold tonneau cover, but the cover hold downs have a poor design and are very tough to clamp on the brackets. You have to have them dead aligned, and if you open the cover and fold it, the hold downs fold in and slide out of position. I took nail polish to mark the correct spot, but I still sometimes miss. I can see the plastic and extended screw mechanism breaking. With the bed extender, the hold downs are behind the side bars of the bed extender, making it difficult to access. Even the service manager didn't know how to use the hold downs. The bed extender is tethered into the tailgate latches, but it feels cheap and won't last long. I wish Ford made a truck this size again. It's a shame that I couldn't find a link on the GMC site to leave my review.I completely understand your frustration with the Ranger being too small and the F150 being too big and not as smooth a ride as the Sport Trak or the Canyon. It would be great if the Sport Trak could make a comeback!

Hey there! Before you read any other reviews, let me tell you about my experience with this truck. I've owned it since 2007 and have taken great care of it, and it has treated me beautifully in return. The bed is large enough for most jobs and the door is sturdy and reliable. While the engine only has 185hp, it shifts well and the power to weight ratio is impressive. Plus, the engine comes with a fast air intake and can be fitted with a cool air filter to increase power even more. This truck is perfect for light to medium tows and heavy bed work. The interior is simple and can be customized to fit any style. It comfortably fits two people, and while three might be a bit tight, it's definitely doable. The lighting is great and the options for the lights are super easy to use. Even with about 100000 miles on it, this truck still feels brand new. I have the version with less tech and roll down windows, which is perfect for me, but I have a buddy with the more advanced version and it's also great. So, if you saw some things left out, it's for that reason. In the end, I keep this car in mind and it performs above and beyond what others think, and it holds its own in more ways than I listed. If you're considering this truck, don't let any negative reviews discourage you. As long as you take care of it, it will take care of you. I hope this review was helpful!

I've had my truck since February of 2006 and it's been great! The only thing I've had to change is the driver's side headlight due to some moisture. I'm really happy with my fuel economy, which is about 28 mpg on the highway. In terms of power, I even gave a Cadillac CTS with a V6 a run for its money! When I bought this truck, it was the cheapest one on the lot, but with some aftermarket wheels and tinted windows, it now looks like the most expensive one! It's a real head-turner!

I still love this 2015 truck! During my recent 1000 mile trip, I was able to achieve about 27 MPG despite the posted speeds being 75 and traffic always going 80. If I were to slow down to 70, I am sure the MPG would be even better. The sound system is fantastic and the road comfort is like a limo - smooth and stable. Once you get used to the long bed behind, visibility from the driver's seat is good. The Nav system is also good, although the map update can be expensive. I did not update it and have not had any problems as roads do not change all that much. Before my trip, I had the original brakes checked and they were still at 75%. Overall, I am very happy with this truck. However, there are two issues that I hope GM has addressed. Firstly, the climate control can be a bit tricky. You have to set the AC at 70 to get a constant temperature. If it is hot out and you set it at 69, it will freeze you out. Secondly, the driver's seat is not very comfortable for long periods of time, although the passenger seat is perfectly fine. I measured them and they are the same, so it must just be the springs or padding. Despite these issues, I would definitely buy this truck again!

I used to own a 2007 Chevrolet Colorado LT until it was vandalized. I was really happy with how it performed, so I decided to get another one, but with a few more options. I went with the GMC Canyon SLE 4x4. I must say that I am more than satisfied with what GM has added as standards for the 2010 model. The suspension offers a much better ride than my 2WD one did from 2010, and the darker interior looks very nice. I know some people have complained about the simplicity of the interior, but I think everything is efficiently placed, and I feel it has a more rugged look than competing mid-sized trucks. All in all, I wouldn't buy any other mid-size truck over this one.
