2015 Gmc Canyon problems

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-24
  • VIN: 1GTG6BE30F1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: While driving, the power steering stops working. I was traveling at approx 55 mph with my daughter in the car and the power steering quit. Alert lights came on the dash. I managed to slow down and turn off the highway. I turned the truck off and when I turned it back on it was fine. Drove for another 10 minutes to get home and it went out again at a stop light. I found a place to pull over and turned it off and back on and it stopped doing it again. There is a recall for this issue on this vehicle but evidently mine was not on the recall or was fixed prior to me owning it. I have not checked with the dealership, but I’m assuming it will be a large bill to get it taken care of. Hopefully it does not go out at a bad time.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
  • VIN: 1GTG6CE36F1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The power steering will intermittently fail at random times. I can feel the change in the steering wheel, followed immediately by the warning message on the screen above the wheel reading "Stabilitrak Failure" and 4 loud chimes from the speakers. This first happened in June of 2022. When I turned the truck off and on again, the same warning appeared on the screen but power steering was restored. This didn't happen again until earlier this year (Feb 2024). This issue happened a few times at low speed, during which it was extremely difficult to steer. I narrowly avoided an accident both times due to quick breaking. I learned about recall bulletin 15595A which describes this issue for my make, model and year. I contacted GE about this issue but they pushed back continuously referencing the fact that my VIN was not part of the recall. They eventually agreed to inspect my truck to determine if my issue is the same as the recall, but only if I paid $250 for a diagnostic. I went to the dealership today and the manager told me everything would be out of pocket, including any repairs. He was not willing to note my case # 9-12939029688 and explicitly stated "this won't be covered no matter what". I left without performing the diagnostic so as not to waste time and money, as it was clear GM had not been communicating with the dealer as they promised during our phone calls. Currently my power steering fails almost every time I drive, typically within 20 minutes of starting up.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-12
  • VIN: 1GTG6CE39F1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I experienced the loss of power steering while driving. It was almost impossible to steer the vehicle while driving. I went on line and noticed a recall for my exact vehicle of the exact problem. The recall bulletin 15595A, was dated February 2016 and explained that the steering gear torque sensor cover assembly was to be replaced. However, apparently my VIN number was not listed. I went to the dealer and it was diagnosed with Code C0545(power steering problem). The dealer recommended the same repairs as the recall notice. The dealer showed no interest in contacting GM to see if this can be fixed by this recall. They claimed because of the year and mileage that they would not move forward with this. I contacted GM myself and explained the situation. I was told that GM would not cost assist with this problem. I find it odd that GM recognized this issue as a real safety hazard on the same make, year and model of my vehicle and refuses to assist in the repairs. The mileage and year has nothing to do with this problem. The problem was and is an existing problem with this particular vehicle. This issue is a sporadic issue and and started approximately [XXX] and continues. I feel this problem is an existing problem with all of these year, makes and models whether the VIN number was listed or not!! It's an accident waiting to happen!! STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-07
  • VIN: 1GTG6BE3XF1
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My wife drives this vehicle. Ever since the 2021 recall "fix", we've been having intermittent issues with two errors; service stabilitrak light and loss of power steering in the truck. This poses major safety issues as my wife is not strong enough to drive without power steering. Once the vehicle is turned off, it resets and the other goes away, but comes back randomly while driving. Latest incident listed below. We've had it looked at multiple times just to have an inability to reproduce the issue at the dealership or shop, except for this most recent time. They said the fix that was done for the safety recall in 2021 didn't actually fix the issue, which was the steering rack needing replaced at $1600. It's unbelievable to think the GM will not actually fix a known safety issue across many Colorados and Canyons (quick Internet search will prove the vastness of the issue). As you can see from the uploaded recall letter, this is the exact issue that still has not been addressed with a fix. Whatever they did before did not fix it at all.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-10
  • VIN: 1GTG6CE38F1
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,WHEELS
  • Summary: While driving my 2015 GMC Canyon my power steering service light goes on and I have no power steering making difficult and dangerous to control my vehicle. Also, at the same a service stabilitrak light goes on. I'm aware of a recall for this problem as been issued for 2015 GMC trucks but so reason my truck is not included in this recall even though I am experiencing the same problems for which the recall was issued. I have taken my vehicle to a GMC service center and am satisfied with their findings. I feel this is a dangerous situation as my steering goes out without warning which could lead to a crash. I think my vehicle should be included in this recall and repaired with no cost to myself.

  • Consequence: If the vehicle experiences a brake fluid leak it can increase the stopping distance, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the front-brake calipers if necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 9, 2015. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), or 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). GM's number for this recall is 14888.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks manufactured January 6, 2014, to April 1, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the hooks that secure the driver's and/or front passenger's seat frame may not have been properly attached to the vehicle body during assembly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 207, "Seating Systems."
  • Consequence: If the seat-frame attachment hooks are not secured properly, the seat may not be adequately anchored to the vehicle, and in the event of a crash, the seat occupant could be at an increased risk of an injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seats, correcting their installation as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on June 2, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15150.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015 Chevrolet Colorado vehicles manufactured September 15, 2014, to January 21, 2015, and 2015 GMC Canyon vehicles manufactured October 3, 2014, to December 9, 2014. The affected vehicles have a front driver air bag inflator that may be misaligned to the air bag module backplate. This can cause the inflator to separate from the backplate during a deployment.
  • Consequence: If the inflator separates from the back plate in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, this may cause the air bag or steering wheel components to separate and be propelled into the interior compartment, potentially seriously injuring the driver or other occupants. Additionally, the air bag may fail to properly inflate, increasing the risk of injury to the driver.
  • Remedy: GM has notified owners, and dealers will inspect the driver air bag module inflator for proper alignment, replacing the air bag, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 19, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15037.

In the affected vehicles, the driver air bag connections may have been wired incorrectly. This could reverse the deployment sequence and disrupt the deployment timing of the driver air bag. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
  • Consequence: If the driver air bag does not deploy as designed, there is an increased risk of driver injury in the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM), free of charge. The recall began on October 6, 2014. Negative 2015 Gmc Canyon car reviews

Be cautious when considering the GM Canyon. While it may have some positive features, my personal experience with this vehicle has been less than satisfactory. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this vehicle due to poor dealer and manufacturer support. The transmission is also a concern, and the location of the drive selector is not ideal. On the other hand, the adjustability of the driver seat is a positive aspect. Overall, I would not purchase this vehicle again and would instead consider a different option. It is important to note that my experience may not be representative of everyone's, and I encourage you to do your own research before making a decision. Thank you for considering my perspective.I currently own 6 vehicles between personal and business. While I have had some issues with my GM Canyon, I believe that American manufacturers have come a long way since the 70s and 80s. Perhaps they could benefit from government subsidies, but I still have faith in their ability to compete with the likes of Toyota and Nissan. Unfortunately, my dealer did not mention any bulletins when I purchased my vehicle, and I have experienced some transmission problems. However, I am confident that GM will address these issues and work to find a solution. While the Canyon may not be the best value for everyone, I believe it has its merits and is worth considering.

I appreciate the long bed and the great MPG. However, the seating could be more comfortable and the engine is both noisy and sluggish. Additionally, I experienced brake issues at 15k and fuel system issues at 30k.

I purchased my 2015 GMC Canyon, ext cab WT in November 2015 with only 600 miles on it. Although it is the WT version, it is the upgraded version with power windows, locks, remote, air, and the V6 complete with the tow package capable of towing 7,000 lbs. The 2nd Gen truck looks awesome and great looking inside and out. However, I have had some issues with the transmission and computer. It's not as smooth as I would like it to be. For example, when driving on the highway, anything between 55 up to 70 and then needing to slow down and then pick back up on speed, it starts to chug and surge like it's struggling for the gear or running out of gas. It does the same thing when trying to climb a hill or going around a corner. I've had it into the dealership three times, had the computer upgraded, and talked with them several times on the phone, but they still don't have a fix. Although I have had some issues, I still appreciate the power of the engine. I would have gladly exchanged the 22+ MPG for 17 or 18 MPG to have it shift right. Overall, I would recommend considering other options before purchasing this truck. As of today, it only has 10,000 miles on it, and I'm still not happy, so I'm trading it in for a Jeep G.C. This was my first GMC, and I was disappointed with the issues I faced. However, I am excited to have purchased a Tacoma 2 years ago and LOVE it. I plan on keeping it until 500k miles are on the clock! As of June 2022, I have not received any feedback or word from GMC. I have talked to others at the gas pump once in a while, and they say they have the same issues. I hope GMC takes customer feedback seriously and works to improve their trucks.

This is my 3rd truck and it's the best yet! However, I do wish it had a CD player. :)

  2. Davin Hoeger 2024-11-12

The truck is a little sluggish with the 200 HP inline 4 cylinder, but it does tow 2500 pounds very well. I'm happy to hear that the interior has held up well and that it has been mechanically sound.

I recently sold my 2015 base model GMC Canyon extended cab truck and upgraded to a 2020 Honda Ridgeline truck. The Canyon was an excellent daily driver and still running strong with 114,381 miles on it. If you need more storage room in the back, I would suggest getting the 4 door. Additionally, I found that the 6 cylinder was a better fit for the Canyon as it seemed too heavy for the 4 cylinder. While the automatic transmission could be somewhat erratic, overall this truck served me well. However, it was just time for me to get another truck.

I am writing this review because I believe that the 2015 GMC Canyon has been unfairly characterized as having poor reliability for too long. While my truck, which I factory ordered, has been subject to numerous recalls, none of them required more than visual inspection by the dealer except a couple. I did have the steering wheel replaced under warranty because it often made a clicking noise while under way and I noticed quite several other owners were having the same issue. Replacing it solved the problem. There were two recalls involving the airbags, as I remember, and required actual replacement of at least one of them. Remember, however, that Takata airbags were a much larger issue than just these vehicles, although I don't think the GMC recalls for these airbags were related to flying shrapnel. Finally, GM issued a recall that required the dealer to replace a steering component that is designed to solve the potential of failed power assist, though I had never experienced any similar problem. I expected some recalls from a first year, totally new model, so I was prepared for that. Obviously, most buyers would NOT be and that is fully understandable. Out of the roughly 65 vehicles I've owned, only three, including this truck, were brand new, and this one was the only one that required so many recalls. Incidentally, this truck was produced with the six speed automatic that so many owners complained about. The problem was that the programming for the transmission was designed to make it upshift as soon as the engine could handle it so that it was always in the highest possible gear. It was also reluctant to downshift even when pressing on the accelerator and when it did downshift, it would sometimes skip a gear or two causing the truck to leap forward at a high RPM. This lead to all sorts of drivability issues, obviously. My guess is that GM programmed it that way to maximize fuel economy and raise the fleet average so they could sell more less economical vehicles. Fortunately, after a while, GM released an updated program to the dealers that let them fix most of these problems. I had my truck updated and now it up and downshifts as you'd expect a proper automatic to shift. Since then, I have had no drivability issues. It's worth noting that some other buyers have had problems with the A/C system, infotainment system and even the engine. However, I have had no problems at all with anything other than those items already mentioned. Keep in mind that the V6 engine was used across a broad section of GM's fleet and has a reputation for outstanding dependability and service. It is smooth, powerful and economical to operate. Also, keep in mind that the 2015 Canyon and Colorado paired that engine with a six-speed auto and not the eight-speed that was introduced later and suffered some serious issues. Now, let me tell you a little more about my particular truck. It is now more than 7 1/2 years old, has always been garaged, and has never really been used as a truck (except when I use it to put my 7,500-pound boat in and out of the water near my house). It currently has just less than 15K miles. So, I will be the first to admit that it has had an easy life so far and that has, no doubt, contributed to my satisfaction with it. It is a loaded SLT extended cab with everything on the list of options except the driver assist which was too unsophisticated, in my opinion, to justify the extra expense. You can no longer even order an extended cab in the top of the line (now Denali) trim. It is a perfect size to park easily, but still matches most SUVs for size and still fits in the garage. I drive a total of five vehicles, including a Lexus LS and a Shelby Mustang. This truck drives straight and true, making it less tiring to drive on long trips than its competitors. Although the driver's seat is a bit too firm and smaller than expected, it remains a great long distance driver. The interior looks great and slightly luxurious, but some owners have complained about premature splitting of the driver's seat cover. However, I have not experienced this issue with mine. The extended cab has two small rear seats that would accommodate small children at best, and I would have removed them when ordering if possible. Additionally, the extra two rear doors can rattle a bit on bumpy surfaces, but this truck is surprisingly quiet overall. While unloaded, it rides like a truck due to the leaf springs in the back, but with a bit of load in the bed or during highway driving, it is extremely comfortable and confident. In my experience, the 2015 Canyon is not a bad choice if you get one that has had all the recalls addressed. It is arguably the best looking mid-sized truck to date, fun to drive, easy to live with, and gets reasonable gas mileage. I plan to keep mine as long as ICE vehicles are practical, which I think will give me another 15 or 20 years. Please note that this review is for an SLT extended cab LB with a V6 and 6-speed auto.

You may have noticed that the ride can be a bit stiff on washboard roads, but on the bright side, the gas mileage is actually better than what the EPA states.
