2008 Gmc Canyon problems
The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-02-08
- VIN: 1GTCS149488
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: PURCHASED VEHICLE NEW WITH 417 MILES. FROM THE BEGINNING, THERE WAS A TICKING NOISE AT START-UP, WHICH GRADUALLY WORSENED TO A LOUD KNOCKING AND VEHICLE SHIMMY FOR SEVERAL SECONDS, SOMETIMES REQUIRING MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS TO START. ORIGINALLY, IT WAS ONLY ON COLD START-UP. MULTIPLE VISITS TO THE DEALER RESULTED IN INCORRECT DIAGNOSES OR NO DIAGNOSIS. FINALLY, AT 18,071 MILES, THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS LOOSE TIMING CHAIN AND WORN GEARS. ALL WERE REPLACED BY THE DEALER UNDER WARRANTY. PROBLEM WAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED BUT NOT SOLVED. IT THEN BEGAN TO AGAIN WORSEN THROUGH MULTIPLE TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP, UNTIL 43,384 MILES, WHEN IT WAS ONCE MORE DIAGNOSED AS THE TIMING HAVING JUMPED OR THE CHAINS HAVING STRETCHED. WE DECLINED TO HAVE THE DEALER REPLACE EVERYTHING WITH US PAYING FOR IT, AND HAD OUR OWN MECHANIC DO THE WORK. OUR MECHANIC BELIEVES THERE IS SOME SORT OF TIMING CHAIN DEFECT IN DESIGN OR COMPOSITION, WHICH KEEPS CAUSING/ALLOWING THE CHAINS TO STRETCH.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-07-26
- VIN: 1GTDT43E588
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
- Summary: PASSLOCK SYSTEM THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS AND NOW GETTING WORSE AND IS INTERMITTENT, WHEN I INSERT AND TURN THE KEY SOMETHING HAPPENS MAKING THE THEFT SYSTEM ACTIVATE AND KEEPS THE VEHICLE FROM STARTING FOR EXACTLY 10 MINUTES. RECENTLY I TURNED THE TRUCK OFF TO SAVE GAS WHILE I WAS IN CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC AT A STAND STILL WITH A CONCRETE BARRIER ON BOTH SIDES AND THE TRUCK WOULD NOT START AND THE POLICE WERE GOING TO HAVE ME TOWED, LUCKILY AT STARTED AT 10 MINUTES BEFORE THE TOW TRUCK CAME. IN MY OPINION THIS CAN BE UNSAFE IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS IF THE VEHICLE IS NEEDED FOR ANY TYPE OF EMERGENCY. BELOW I AM PASTING SOMETHING FROM THE WEB, BUT IT IS BASICALLY THE PROBLEM THAT I AND PEOPLE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ARE HAVING. "THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE BEING LED IN CIRCLES BY ANY VEHICLE WITH A PASSLOCK II SYSTEM AND IT IS AN UNSAFE PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. IT PREVENTS VEHICLES FROM RESTARTING IN POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS AREAS WHILE THE VEHICLE RESETS AND CAN PERMANENTLY DISABLE THE CAR IF NOT ADDRESSED. THE PROBLEM LIES IN A DESIGN OVERSIGHT AND CUTTING A MATERIAL COST BY PUTTING IN A CHEAP COMPONENT THAT ANY BASIC CHEMIST COULD TELL YOU WOULD GO BAD WITHIN A YEAR OR TWO. CHANGE YOUR IGNITION SWITCH CONTACT FROM NICKEL TO GOLD PLATED CONNECTORS AND OXIDATION WILL NOT CAUSE FAULTY READINGS TO TRICK YOUR VEHICLES INTO THINKING THAT THEY ARE BEING STOLEN AND SHUTTING OFF THE FUEL PUMPS. REMUNERATION FOR INDIVIDUALS IMPACTED BY THIS FINANCIAL BURDEN FOR THE PURCHASE OF YOUR VEHICLES IS ALSO A REQUEST AS THIS PROBLEM IS A GOLD MINE FOR CAR MECHANICS, BOTH GM CERTIFIED AND FREELANCE, TO TROUBLESHOOT NUMEROUS SYSTEMS BEFORE IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM PROPER."
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-05-01
- VIN: 1GTDT43E288
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: VEHICLE SETS AN "AC OFF" FAULT MESSAGE FREQUENTLY. WHEN THIS OCCURS, THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE GOES TO ZERO AND THE AC DOES NOT WORK. THE TRUCK IS NOT OVERHEATING AND NO OTHER FAULTS ARE SET. NO TROUBLE CODES ARE FOUND DURING SCAN. AFTER SOME TIME (20-50 MILES OF TRAVEL), THE FAULT DISAPPEARS AND THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE AND AC BEGIN WORKING AGAIN. THERE ARE LITERALLY 1,000'S OF MESSAGES ON DISCUSSION BOARDS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ON NUMEROUS WEBSITES ON DIFFERENT GM VEHICLES. PEOPLE HAVE CHANGED ONE, SOME, OR ALL COMPONENTS OF THEIR COOLING SYSTEM TO NO AVAIL. THE PROBLEM SOMETIMES GOES AWAY FOR A FEW HOURS OR A FEW MONTHS, BUT ALWAYS SEEMS TO RETURN. I HAD MY VEHICLE TO THE GM DEALERSHIP IN MAY 2016 AND THE CONDITION WAS UNABLE TO BE DUPLICATED AT THAT TIME. I PAID THE DEALERSHIP TO DO A COMPLETE SERVICING AND INSPECTION OF THE ENTIRE VEHICLE, WHICH INCLUDED THE COOLING SYSTEM. NO ANOMALIES WERE FOUND BY THE DEALERSHIP. SINCE THE PROBLEM CONTINUED, I REPLACED THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR HOPING IT WAS A JUST A BAD SENSOR/CONNECTOR PROBLEM. THIS HAS NOT CHANGED THE CONDITION IN ANY WAY. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS IS POSSIBLY AN ISSUE RELATED TO THE ACTUAL PLACEMENT OF THE TEMPERATURE SENSOR. I'LL EXPLAIN WITH THE FOLLOWING SCENARIO: ONCE THE ENGINE COMES UP TO OPERATING TEMP, THE THERMOSTAT OPENS, AND WHEN THE COOLANT BEGINS TO CIRCULATE, THE TEMP SENSOR IS LEFT EXPOSED, THE TEMP GAUGE TANKS, AND THE SYSTEM KICKS INTO A SAFE MODE. WHILE THIS IS A GREAT SYSTEM SAFE RESPONSE, I AM PREVENTED ME FROM SEEING A REAL OVERHEAT CONDITION. I PERSONALLY LIVE AND WORK IN THE MOJAVE DESERT. IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE TEMPERATURES ARE COMMONLY ABOVE 100 DEG F, A PROPERLY OPERATING VEHICLE COOLING SYSTEM CAN MEAN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH. I CAN'T BE ENTIRELY SURE IF MY COOLANT SYSTEM REALLY HAS A PROBLEM OR IS JUST GIVING FALSE INDICATIONS AT THIS POINT.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-05-31
- VIN: J5323165130

2008 Gmc Canyon recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2008 Gmc Canyon.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: CHILD SEAT
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.
- Consequence: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING 185,903 MODEL YEAR 2004-2009 COLORADO, GMC MODEL YEAR 2009-2004 CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006 I-280, I-350, MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 I-290, AND I-370, PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND UTAH. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE SIMULTANEOUS LOSS OF ALL BRAKE LAMPS OR CAUSE ALL OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY JUNE 2010. A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. IN THE INTERIM, OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE CAN OBTAIN A FREE REPAIR, HOWEVER THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO RETURN WHEN THE NEW DESIGN PART BECOMES AVAILABLE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Hi there! Last August, I purchased my SLE Crewcab, 5 cyl., auto, 4x4 and it has been a lifesaver during this past record snowfall winter. The 4wd and locking rearend made it unstoppable! The truck was originally listed at $25.6K, but after rebates, dealing, and GM points, I was able to purchase it for $18.5K before tax. This was about $10K less than Toyota or Nissan. Although I mainly do city driving and short trips, only 3-4K miles/year, so mpg is not a great concern for me. I am not surprised that it wasn't hitting the EPA ratings considering the few miles on the truck, short trips, cold weather, and use of 4wd. Thanks for listening!
-
This is my first Canyon and I absolutely love it! It has fantastic towing capability and comes with a lot of standard features, such as remote keyless entry, cruise control, and intermittent wipers. I even opted for XM satellite radio, which is a great addition. It's amazing that Canyon offers a leather-wrapped steering wheel, while Toyota makes you pay extra for keyless entry and cruise control on the Tacoma.
-
I've owned my GMC Canyon SLE straight cab 2WD 6' bed for 13 years since it was new. Despite enduring 12 Wisconsin winters and accumulating 140k miles, this truck has held up remarkably well. While it may not be the most flashy or rugged vehicle out there, it has a rare sport package that includes a slammed, wide suspension, low, fat rubber, buckets, console, & 5 speed manual. Although the 185 HP engine may not be the most powerful, the truck handles corners like a dream. I have had some trouble with the heater fan switches, but overall, this truck has been a reliable and enjoyable ride.
-
The truck may lack power, especially after adding larger wheel/tires, but there are ways to improve its performance. I added exhaust, high performance plugs, throttle body spacer, and knn air filter, which all helped quite a bit. The exterior design is fabulous, making it a great looking truck. The auto locker in the rear is a great feature to have, and has saved me a lot, especially when driving in 2-wheel drive. The interior with the vinyl floor is nice and easy to keep clean, with no carpet to worry about staining. However, the seats could be more comfortable. On the bright side, it handles very well around corners. It's worth noting that the manual version has a lower towing capacity. Overall, it's a great truck with some room for improvement.

I have a truck with over 240,000 KMS, a four-wheel drive, and a five-cylinder engine. I can't complain about the fuel mileage, which is 28 MPG (imperial) on three extended trips of over 6000 miles. The 3.7 ltr, five-cylinder engine has performed well, even when pulling a loaded trailer of over 6000 pounds. For a mid-sized truck, I would compare it to any brand out there. I have a friend with the same truck, but he has the V6 and does not get the same mileage as I do. He also says that the V6 does not perform well when pulling his travel trailer, which weighs in at 4700 pounds. It's one tough little truck. I'm just waiting to get the next one with the diesel.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. While the truck is good, it seems to be quite basic. You mentioned that you drive 60 miles round-trip daily for your commute to work. It's unfortunate that the comfort level is minimal compared to the Ford Sport-Trac. However, the wide stance does provide a stable ride, although it can be quite noisy inside. Perhaps better sound-proofing and door gaskets would help with this issue. I understand that it can be hard to see the ignition key due to the big steering wheel center, and that it's difficult to find and connect to the power outlets beneath the dash. It would be great if there were interior storage behind the seats, and if the rear seat headrests didn't block vision out the back window. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us!

Although it has been reliable, I find the design of this truck to be quite useless. The bed is only suitable for firewood, mulch, and other similar items, but it is too thin and not very sturdy. The mandatory 6-foot bed can be quite annoying, as it is not possible to lay down a six-foot ladder flat. Loading construction materials onto this truck can be a real challenge. While the tailgate can be lowered to accommodate 8-foot materials, it is unfortunate that 4-foot wide drywall and plywood cannot fit between or on top of the wheel wells. This can be very frustrating. Additionally, there is a large blind spot when turning left or going around sharp left curves. Overall, I believe that this truck could benefit from some design improvements.

My 2008 GMC Canyon truck has some issues, including non-functional 4x4 and AC, as well as a rotted-out frame. However, I am confident in my ability to address these problems and restore my truck to its former glory.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that I noticed an issue with your car. Unfortunately, frames tend to rot out from front to back over time, and it seems like your rear frame and shackles have completely deteriorated. Even the cross members are gone! It might be a good idea to have a professional take a look at it. Let me know if you need any help finding a reliable mechanic in your area.

I have extensive experience with this model, having owned one for the past 6 years and driven it for over 50k miles. While I have invested a significant amount of money in repairs during this time, including replacing 4 front wheel bearings at a cost of $700 to $900 each, 2 sets of plugs and coils, a water pump, a fuel pump, a bad cruise control switch on the turn signal stalk, broken exhaust heat shields, and recurring evap and random misfire codes, I can confidently say that this model is a reliable and durable vehicle. Unfortunately, due to frame corrosion, I will soon be retiring it at around 150k miles.
