2004 Gmc Canyon problems
The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2004 Gmc Canyon problems
The GMC Canyon, a mid-sized pickup truck introduced in 2004, has had inconsistent reliability ratings over the years. While the Canyon has many positive qualities, such as a spacious interior and versatile engine options, there have been several common problems reported by owners across various model years.
One of the most significant issues with the GMC Canyon is related to its transmission. From 2004 to 2012, the first generation of the Canyon faced transmission problems, including slipping out of gear unexpectedly, rough shifting, and premature clutch failure. These issues have not been resolved through recalls, and while the 2020 model year has not shown these problems as frequently, GMC has not taken significant action to address the problem.
Safety concerns are another area where the GMC Canyon has struggled. The 2004 model year received poor safety ratings from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), with ratings of "Poor," "Marginal," and "Acceptable" in crashworthiness.
Electrical problems have also been reported by GMC Canyon owners. These issues include the battery dying prematurely and, in rare cases, the vehicle catching fire or experiencing electrical loss while driving. While these electrical problems are relatively rare, they can pose safety risks and may require costly repairs.
In terms of specific model years to avoid, the 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 model years have been identified as having higher rates of complaints and problems, with the 2015 and 2016 models performing particularly poorly in terms of cost of repair, severity of problems, and frequency of issues.
Despite these challenges, there are also reliable GMC Canyon model years. The 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2019, 2020, and 2021 model years have been identified as having lower rates of complaints and problems, with the 2013 and 2014 models being particularly reliable and well-regarded by consumers and reviewers.
In summary, while the GMC Canyon has many positive qualities, it has also faced several common problems, particularly related to transmission issues, safety concerns, and electrical problems. Prospective buyers should carefully research specific model years and consider their individual needs and priorities when choosing a GMC Canyon.

I GOT A RECALL NOTICE IN THE TIME FRAME ABOVE TO BRING IT IN. I TOOK IT TO THEN STANLY GMC IN SHERMAN TEXAS, NOW PARKWAY GMC. THE PARTS MANAGER SAID BECAUSE I WAS OUTSIDE THE MILEAGE THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. TO DAY I SAW AN ARTICLE IN OUR NEWSPAPER ABOUT THE POOR RECALL PERCENTAGE ON YOUR NOTICES. I TOOK MINE IN AS THE ARTICLE SAID YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO DO. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THAT TIME MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS A NUISANCE. I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEM YET AND INTEND TO KEEP THE TRUCK FOR ANOTHER 10 YEARS OR SO. IF I DO EVER DECIDE TO TRADE FOR A NEW TRUCK I'LL KEEP THIS EVENT IN MIND. I'M 72 AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY YOU PUT A LIMIT ON THE TIME BEFORE THE RECALL EXPIRES. A PROBLEM CAN BE A PROBLEM NO MATTER HOW OLD THE TRUCK OR CAR IS AS LONG AS THE ORIGINAL OWNER HAS IT. THANK YOU [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

2004 Gmc Canyon recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2004 Gmc Canyon.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: CHILD SEAT
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.
- Consequence: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING 185,903 MODEL YEAR 2004-2009 COLORADO, GMC MODEL YEAR 2009-2004 CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006 I-280, I-350, MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 I-290, AND I-370, PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND UTAH. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE SIMULTANEOUS LOSS OF ALL BRAKE LAMPS OR CAUSE ALL OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY JUNE 2010. A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. IN THE INTERIM, OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE CAN OBTAIN A FREE REPAIR, HOWEVER THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO RETURN WHEN THE NEW DESIGN PART BECOMES AVAILABLE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS MAY EXPERIENCE THE PERMANENT LOSS OF BRAKE LAMP FUNCTION OR BRAKE LAMPS THAT ARE ILLUMINATED AT ALL TIMES. THE CENTER HIGH-MOUNTED STOP LAMP (CHMSL) IS AFFECTED IN BOTH INSTANCES. ALSO, IF EQUIPPED, THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL BECOME INOPERATIVE. ANY TRAILER BRAKE LAMPS WHICH ARE CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LAMP WIRING WILL MIMIC THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LAMPS WHEN EITHER CONDITION OCCURS.
- Consequence: A FOLLOWING DRIVER MAY NOT KNOW WHEN THE BRAKES HAVE BEEN APPLIED, AND A REAR-END CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH ASSEMBLY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 5, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 OR ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my '04 Canyon. I bought it used with 10k miles and have put over 40k miles on it since then. I've been really impressed with its fuel economy and power. The only issue I had was with the passenger side heated seat, but it's all fixed now. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my truck!
-
It's a great truck! More people should buy good old American know-how. And those beans are really good!

Great to hear that it performs well both off-road and on the road!

I got the 3.5L engine and I highly recommend it! This tough truck is even better with it.

It seems a bit early to provide a complete review as the performance is not quite there yet. Unfortunately, with the air on and four adults, it doesn't seem to have enough power. I also miss having engine gauges for oil, water, and battery. Additionally, with posi in the rear, it tends to slip around in wet weather. Perhaps adding disc brakes in the back would help with this issue. I initially purchased this vehicle to tow a 3100 pound boat, but I am starting to think that may have been a mistake. My previous vehicle was an 02 Envoy, which had plenty of power, but unfortunately, it was in the shop 14 times. The dealer stated that these were new model year problems.
