2007 Gmc Canyon problems

gmc logo

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2007 Gmc Canyon problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2007 GMC Canyon, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Timing Chain: The timing chain in the 2007 GMC Canyon is a critical component that can fail, leading to severe engine damage. Regular oil changes with high-quality oil are essential to prevent premature timing chain failure. When the timing chain breaks, it can cause the engine to stop running, potentially damaging pistons and valves. Attention should also be paid to the camshaft phaser actuator, which can fail and mimic symptoms of a bad timing chain.
  2. PCV Hose: The PCV hose, located behind the intake, is prone to becoming brittle, cracking, or collapsing in the 2007 GMC Canyon. This issue can result in drivability problems, rough engine operation, and trigger specific trouble codes like P0300 and P0171. Replacing the PCV hose is the only solution to resolve this issue, which may require removing the plenum for access.
  3. Low Idle Speed: A common problem in the 2007 GMC Canyon is a low idle speed, often caused by a dirty throttle body. This issue can lead to the engine working harder than necessary during acceleration. Cleaning the throttle body or replacing it, if severely contaminated, is crucial to address the low idle speed concern.
  4. EVAP Vent Valve: The EVAP vent valve, located near the spare tire, is part of the emission system in the 2007 GMC Canyon. Accumulation of debris can hinder its proper functioning, leading to issues like a check engine light with the code P0450. Replacing the EVAP vent valve is the recommended solution, along with ensuring the gas cap is not loose or worn out.
  5. Blower Motor Resistor: Problems with the blower motor resistor can manifest as issues with the air conditioning system in the 2007 GMC Canyon. Symptoms include no air coming out, lack of hot or cold air, or malfunctioning settings. Worn-out wires or a burnt-out resistor may require replacement, along with checking the blower motor for any related issues.

These common problems in the 2007 GMC Canyon highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any warning signs to ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

THE LAST YEAR OR SO THE TURN SIGNAL AND BRAKE LIGHTS HAVE PULSES WHERE THEY DECIDE TO NOT WORK CORRECTLY. THEN WORK FINE FOR MONTHS, BEFORE ACTING UP AGAIN. WE ACTUALLY HAD OUR CANYON IN AT THE GMC DEALER IN DEC 2019 FOR LOOS INTAKE MANIFOLD REPAIR, 2ND TIME IN LAST 9 MONTHS.. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD US WE ALSO HAD NO BRAKE LIGHTS. I SAID I DID NOT KNOW THAT AND I WAS NOW CONCERNED HOW LONG THEY HAVE NOT BEEN WORKING, AND THAT WE HAVE HAD INTERMITTENT TURN SIGNAL ISSUES A NUMBER OF TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR. COMES AND GOES. I THEN ASKED IF THERE WAS ANY BRAKE LIGHT OR LIGHT SWITCH RECALL ON OUR CANYON. I SAID I REMEMBER SEEING A RECALL NOTICE ON CONSUMER REPORTS. HE SAID THEIR IS NO RECALL ON OUR CANYON. THEY SAID THEY FIXED THE BRAKE LIGHT WITH A NEW BRAKE PEDAL BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. TONIGHT THE LIGHTS STARTED ACTING UP AGAIN. WHEN PUSH BRAKE PEDDLE, LEFT TURN SIGNAL TURNS ON. LEFT TURN SIGNAL WAS ALSO INTERMITTENT FUNCTION, OCCASIONALLY THIS LAST WEEK. TONIGHT IT HAD A HARD TIME FIGURING OUT HOW TO WORK, FLASH CORRECTLY. THEN, WHILE DRIVING HOME TONIGHT AND WITH MY KIDS FOLLOWING ME IN THEIR SUV, WHEN WE GOT HOME THEY SAID THE CANYON NEEDS TO STAY PARKED UNTIL REPAIRED. THEY SAID MY TURN SIGNALS AND BRAKES LIGHT ARE TOTALLY MESSED UP AND NOT WORKING. NO LEFT RUNNING LIGHT, NO LEFT BRAKE LIGHT, AND RIGHT BRAKE LIGHT ON FULL BRIGHTNESS THE WHOLE TIME. THEY COULD NOT TELL WHEN I WAS BRAKING OR USING THE TURN SIGNALS. INTERESTING HOW THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER DID NOT RECOMMEND TO US THAT THEY REPLACE THE LIGHT SWITCH ANYWAYS, JUST TO BE SAFE.

THERE WAS EXHAUST RESIDUE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA OF THE 1ST AND 5TH CYLINDER PORT INDICATING THAT EXHAUST GAS WAS BEING DISCHARGED INTO THE ENGINE BAY. THE FAILURE IS AN ALARMING SAFETY EVENT BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL FOR HOT EXHAUST TO CAUSE A FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND THE POTENTIAL FOR ASPHYXIATION DUE TO CONTAMINATED CABIN AIR. THIS IS ALSO AN ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL FAILURE BECAUSE A PORTION OF THE EXHAUST GAS ISS BYPASSING THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS. THE OWNER IS THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND ALL EQUIPMENT IS ORIGINAL. HE IS A DEGREED MECHANICAL ENGINEER AND HAS WORKED IN AUTOMOTIVE COMPONENT MANUFACTURING. GM WAS CONTACTED DIRECTLY AND THE OWNER DIRECTED TO SEE THE DEALERSHIP. THE OWNER PROVIDED THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE ATTACHED PHOTOS BUT THEN REFUSED TO INSPECT THE VECHICLE WITHOUT FIRST COLLECTING A "DIAGNOSTIC FEE." THE OWNER REFUSED.

UPON REPAIR DIAGNOSIS, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT WIRES THAT TRAVEL BETWEEN THE BODY AND THE LEFT SIDE HALF DOOR -BEHIND THE DRIVERS DOOR WERE BROKEN FROM THE DOOR OPENING AND CLOSING. SINCE THIS HALF DOOR IS USED VERY LITTLE, THERE IS A DEFECT WITH THE QUALITY OF WIRE THAT CANNOT WITHSTAND FLEXING BY OPENING AND CLOSING THE DOOR. THESE WIRES CONTROL THE PRE TENSIONER ASSEMBLY IN THE HALF DOOR. WHEN THE WIRES ARE BROKEN IT DISABLES THE ENTIRE AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM. WIRES WERE NOT PHYSICALLY DAMAGED BY ANY OTHER MEANS. THESE WIRE SHOULD NOT BE BROKEN ON THIS AGE VEHICLE WITH LITTLE USE.

  • Summary: VEHICLE CRANKS BUT DOES NOT START. SECURITY LIGHT FLASHING. AFTER 10 MINUTES WITH KEY ON AND SECURITY LIGHT OFF AFTER TURNING OFF THEN CRANK ENGINE STARTS. HAPPENED AT LEAST 15 TIMES. NOW, ENGINE SOMETIMES WILL CRANK ITSELF IN THE "ON" POSITION AND WILL NOT START AND SECURITY LIGHT FLASHING. HAPPENED THREE TIMES AND FINALLY AFTER THREE 10 MINUTE KEY ON WAIT CYCLES IN A DARK PARKING LOT SECURITY LIGHT STOPPED FLASHING AND STARTED AND MADE IT HOME. VEHICLE VERY UNRELIABLE NOW. I AM TIRED OF HAVING A VEHICLE THAT THINKS THE OWNER IS TRYING TO STEAL OWNED VEHICLE. AND AUTO CRANK IN THE ON - NOT START- POSITION WITHOUT RUNNING. HOW DO I BYPASS THIS AWFUL SYSTEM WITHOUT ANOTHER CAR PAYMENT TO ANOTHER AUTOMAKER? THIS DEFECT IS DANGEROUS AND HAZARDOUS WHEN STOPPING FOR FUEL AND HAVE TO LEAVE ENGINE ON OR HOLDING UP CUSTOMERS UNTIL ENGINE STARTS. ALSO HOLDING UP VEHICLES ON A FERRY BOAT. VERY EMBARRASSING WHEN FRIENDS AND CO WORKERS HAVE TO WAIT TILL VEHICLE DECIDES TO START AND RUN. AND BEING LATE TO WORK. I DO NOT WANT NEW PARTS THAT WILL FAIL AGAIN, I WANT IT BYPASSED. SEND ME A KIT WITH DIRECTIONS ASAP! *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-09-03
  • VIN: 1GTCS199178
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: ---ISSUE WITH THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM--- SPORADICALLY, WHEN KEY IS INSERTED INTO THE IGNITION AND TURNED, THE VEHICLE PASSLOCK ENGAGES AND CUTS OFF FUEL TO THE VEHICLE. YOU MUST WAIT APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES FOR SECURITY LIGHT TO QUIT FLASHING AND THEN TRY TO START VEHICLE AGAIN. THE 10 MINUTE CYCLE HAS HAPPENED BACK TO BACK, AS MANY AS THREE TIMES IN MY EXPERIENCE. THE PROBLEM GETS WORSE IN TEMPERATURES BELOW FREEZING OR HIGH HUMIDITY. THE PROBLEM EXIST WITH BRAND NEW, NEVER USED, FACTORY KEY AS WELL AS THE NORMALLY USED KEY. THIS ISSUE IS VERY INCONVENIENT, BUT DOES RAISE VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY CONCERNS. THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE HAS A STANDARD TRANSMISSION. IF VEHICLE IS ACCIDENTALLY STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION DURING SHIFTING, AND THE PASSLOCK PROBLEM OCCURS, YOU WOULD BE UNABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THIS WOULD POSE IMMEDIATE DANGER TO THE PEOPLE IN THE VEHICLE, AS WELL AS, ANY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. *TR

2007 Gmc Canyon recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2007 Gmc Canyon.

2010-11-18
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: CHILD SEAT
  • Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.
  • Consequence: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
2009-07-29
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: GM IS RECALLING 185,903 MODEL YEAR 2004-2009 COLORADO, GMC MODEL YEAR 2009-2004 CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006 I-280, I-350, MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 I-290, AND I-370, PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND UTAH. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.
  • Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE SIMULTANEOUS LOSS OF ALL BRAKE LAMPS OR CAUSE ALL OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY JUNE 2010. A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. IN THE INTERIM, OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE CAN OBTAIN A FREE REPAIR, HOWEVER THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO RETURN WHEN THE NEW DESIGN PART BECOMES AVAILABLE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
2006-08-11
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: WHEELS:RIM
  • Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND TRUCKS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 110, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS." THESE VEHICLES HAVE AN INCOMPLETE TIRE RIM DESIGNATION ON THE CERTIFICATION/TIRE LABEL LOCATED ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR EDGE. IN ADDITION, THE LABEL MAY ALSO BE MISSING THE TIRE LOAD RATING ON THE LABEL. ALTHOUGH THIS INFORMATION IS NOT REQUIRED BY THE STANDARD, IF A TIRE OF A LESSER LOAD RATING IS INSTALLED, THE TIRE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN THE LOADS ENCOUNTERED DURING USE.
  • Consequence: IF A CUSTOMER REPLACES A WHEEL AND ONLY RELIES ON THE RIM SIZE DESIGNATION THAT IS INDICATED ON THE LABEL, A WHEEL THAT IS OF A DIFFERENT RIM CONTOUR DESIGNATION MAY BE INSTALLED. IT MAY BE DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE TO MOUNT THE TIRE ON A WHEEL WITH THE WRONG CONTOUR. IF THE TIRE IS MOUNTED ON THE WHEEL WITH THE WRONG CONTOUR, THE WHEEL AND TIRE MAY NOT PERFORM AS INTENDED, WHICH COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: A LABEL THAT WILL CORRECT THE LABEL ORIGINALLY INSTALLED WILL BE MAILED TO CONSUMERS ALONG WITH INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. THE CUSTOMER WILL HAVE THE OPTION FOR DEALERS TO INSTALL THE LABEL. THE RECALL BEGAON ON NOVEMBER 7, 2006. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2239, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, AND GMC TRUCKS AT 1-866-996-9463.

Negative 2007 Gmc Canyon car reviews

  1. Marco Kirlin 2025-01-08

Although it has been reliable, I find the design of this truck to be quite useless. The bed is only suitable for firewood, mulch, and other similar items, but it is too thin and not very sturdy. The mandatory 6-foot bed can be quite annoying, as it is not possible to lay down a six-foot ladder flat. Loading construction materials onto this truck can be a real challenge. While the tailgate can be lowered to accommodate 8-foot materials, it is unfortunate that 4-foot wide drywall and plywood cannot fit between or on top of the wheel wells. This can be very frustrating. Additionally, there is a large blind spot when turning left or going around sharp left curves. Overall, I believe that this truck could benefit from some design improvements.

Since purchasing this truck in September 2007, we have unfortunately had to take it to the garage 7 times. We had to replace the speakers, headlights, and turn signals. Our local mechanic advised us to rotate the tires every 5,000 miles due to known front axle issues with this model. As predicted, our tires wore out prematurely. Despite being labeled as a vehicle to avoid by consumer reports, we decided to take control of the situation and purchased a reliable Subaru instead.

I have been driving 80 miles to work one way, but unfortunately, my truck has been out of commission for the past 3 weeks due to multiple issues. Despite having only 22000 miles on it, I have had to replace the valve seal, fuel injector twice, and finally the cylinder in the engine went bad all in 1 week. Although I appreciate the gas mileage, I am now considering trading it in for a more dependable vehicle that better suits my needs. Additionally, I have found that the back seat is not very roomy. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hi there! I noticed that I have had an ABS/Traction Control fault problem with less than 1500 miles on it. Also, the wheels look like they are plastic wheel coverings. However, I am still very happy with the SLT package!

You bought this truck in January 2009 with just under 150,000 kms and it seems to have been dependable for the previous owner. You really like the ride, the design and the interior, which does not look or feel cheap at all. Although the controls are old school, you don't mind. However, you think that some better newer technology would be nice, such as a heated steering wheel (to go with the heated seats) and auto-up and down capabilities for the front windows from the driver's seat.

I must admit, I was initially interested in a Tacoma xtra-cab, but I ended up purchasing an American truck with more features and at a better price. While the fit and finish may not be on par with Toyota, it comes pretty close. My only minor complaint is some freeway wind rush from the driver's side 1/2 door, but it's not a major issue. If you opt for the sunroof (which I think is pretty cool and unique), a wind deflector is recommended. The interior is simple, but I don't find it to be cheap-looking. The factory 6-disc player sounds great too. The 2.9l engine is the best 4-cylinder I've ever experienced, and it gets decent mileage. Plus, it cost $8000 less than a Tacoma! With the money I saved, I can even afford to buy a new Titus Mtn. Bike...

Hi there! Last August, I purchased my SLE Crewcab, 5 cyl., auto, 4x4 and it has been a lifesaver during this past record snowfall winter. The 4wd and locking rearend made it unstoppable! The truck was originally listed at $25.6K, but after rebates, dealing, and GM points, I was able to purchase it for $18.5K before tax. This was about $10K less than Toyota or Nissan. Although I mainly do city driving and short trips, only 3-4K miles/year, so mpg is not a great concern for me. I am not surprised that it wasn't hitting the EPA ratings considering the few miles on the truck, short trips, cold weather, and use of 4wd. Thanks for listening!

I've been driving a Canyon for about a year now, and I have the low-end model with an automatic transmission. I find it to be a great vehicle with plenty of power, good fuel economy, and an overall comfortable ride. I'm a bit confused by comments about poor build quality, as I find this unit to be built far better than any other units I looked at, including the Japanese units, and for a whole lot less money!

I purchased this truck for my courier business and I've been really happy with it so far. The interior is comfortable, although it would be great if the seats could recline backwards. I think they don't because it's an extended cab, but that would be a nice feature. The exterior styling is head-turning everywhere I go. I have a Silver Birch model with an A.R.E. Cab High cap and I get many compliments. The fuel economy is excellent. Pure highway driving between 60 & 65 MPH, on cruise control with automatic, results in 24-26 MPG. Even with a highway/city mix, I still get over 20 MPG. Pizza delivery driving, however, results in about 11 to 13 MPG. The truck is rated 13 city, 17 hwy.

I bought my Canyon just 5 years ago and, apart from regular maintenance, I had to have the valves redone at 30,000 miles under warranty. After all these years of driving this truck, it still gets great gas mileage and has never left me stranded. I really like the I-5 engine with MP3 player, and it looks good as GM has always had nice designs. I am definitely getting the new model Canyon!
