2023 Gmc Canyon problems
The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2023 Gmc Canyon problems
The 2023 GMC Canyon has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to its infotainment system and engine.
- Engine Overheating: Some owners have reported that their 2023 GMC Canyon's engine has overheated, requiring towing to a dealership for repair. In one case, the engine overheated due to a coolant hose clamp not being properly installed, leading to a tow and repair.
- Fuel Injector Replacement: Another issue reported by owners is the need for fuel injector replacement. In one case, the number 1 cylinder went out, requiring a fuel injector replacement. However, the dealership informed the owner that the necessary part, a seal spacer, was not in stock and did not even have a part number yet due to its newness. The dealership estimated that it could take 2-3 months to get the part in and fix the truck, leaving the owner with a rental car and still making truck payments.
- Connectivity Issues: Some owners have reported connectivity issues with Bluetooth and SiriusXM, which can be frustrating for those who rely on these features for their daily commute or work.
- Low Sales: The 2023 GMC Canyon has experienced low sales, with a 14.2% decrease in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. This is partly due to production issues and delays caused by the pandemic, semi-conductor chip shortage, and other supply chain issues. These issues have led to a wait time of six months or more for a new 2023 Canyon, causing some potential buyers to cancel their orders.
In summary, the 2023 GMC Canyon has several common problems, primarily related to its infotainment system and engine. These issues can be frustrating for owners and may affect the vehicle's safety and reliability. Additionally, low sales and production issues have affected the availability of the vehicle, causing delays and cancellations.

Having issues now with auto braking system activating for no reason did this multiple times almost got rear ended on NY State thruway because it activated with no cars near me once it activates it causes the truck to go into a limp mode (won't go over 30 mph) and starts vibrating like it needs a tune up. The radio and digital display often dissappear for no reason can tell speed. I almost got a ticket from state trooper for unsafe stopping i explained everything and was told i could get a safety violation for defective equipment and to take it garage and drive it till its fuxed , the windows have rolled down a couple of times while it's parked and won't go back up. Headlights often flicker when driving auto low beam/high beam rarely works. Every time it goes to dealership they say they can't duplicate the problem. It's really scary when you're doing 70mph and the auto brake engages. I'm literally afraid to drive it. I have a 14 year old truck with 230,000 miles I don't smell coolant or have these kinds of issues Seems to be a lot of electrical problems going on service advisor said he saw notices for bcm, front facing camera total of 6 issues. Nothing seems to resolve issues but dealerships aren't doing anything just saying can't duplicate problem also paint is chipping every where The issues started around 5300 miles and continuing

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The theft alarm has gone off five times since I purchased the vehicle in September, dealership has been noted and has been in there for it and still goes off. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-08
- VIN: 1GTP6EEK9P1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Blind zone detection system and door latch system failures. The blind zone detection system is inconsistent and at times remains on with bright lights impairing the drivers ability to see at night. With this inconsistency the driver cannot rely on it properly detecting vehicles within the blind spot. Another known issue is the inability to put down windows with the drivers side door. The alert for this is to service the door latch system which typically comes on while driving the vehicle. This limits the driver being able to safely respond to traffic stops from emergency personnel as well as the ability to evacuate the vehicle through the window if necessary. The dealers that have reviewed these issues say they cannot replicate or fix them.

While turning around in a Michigan left turn, system went off and brakes applied abruptly until I was at complete stop. No vehicles or persons were in front of me. There was a car following closely behind which almost hit me. Fast forward a few weeks later and now forward collision system inop light illuminated on dash and will not go off.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
- VIN: 1GTP6DEK9P1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Blind spot warning system continues to illuminate when traveling on two lane roads with no objects in the blind spot(false positives). Especially the passenger side. I continue to be distracted while driving to check the mirror to see what is there, nothing. Then while traveling on multi-lane highways, both sides will sometimes not illuminate when there is a vehicle present in the blind spot. Both of these examples also happen more often after dusk or during dark/cloudy days. I have not taken into dealer yet for repairs but will soon. No system warning of malfunction on dash, just the false positive lights on side mirrors.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
- VIN: 1GTP6DEK9P1
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: While slowly driving, like when parking or trying to park vehicle in garage, it will randomly surge when almost at complete stop forcing vehicle to lunge forward requiring operator to apply quick additional firm braking. It almost feels like vehicle is creeping in 2nd gear and decides to downshift into 1st gear just before coming to a stop and engine applies slightly more throttle. I have almost hit garage wall and other vehicles in parking lots due to this issue. Again, it is intermittent but is alarming when happens. I have not had vehicle in for repairs yet but concerns dealer will not be able to duplicate. No warning lights on dash for this issue.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-14
- VIN: 1GTP6FEK0P1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The AC does not work properly. I constantly have to dial the temperature to be comfortable. I sometimes take my eye off the road to do this temperature adjustment. The GM dealer has tried various fixes but the temperature control is still a problem.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-18
- VIN: 1GTP6DEK6P1
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The roof of the vehicle crackles and pops when it is in the blowing section of an automatic car wash. We have never had any experience like this before. The roof of the truck is so flimsy that it was actually dented by the hard blowing of air. I don’t feel like this car is solidly constructed and safe.

GMC dealer states brake master cyclinder failure and vehicle should not be driven. Vehicle left at dealer while awaiting replacement master cyclinder. Unknown if this is a widespread problem causing brake failures in GMC and Chevy new model Canyons and Colorados.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-24
- VIN: 1GTP6DEK4P1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The screen in the Truck doubles in picture, freezes and/or shuts down completely. This leaves you with out control of your GPS, radio, blue tooth, head light control and backup camera. Research on the internet has proven this seems to be an accruing problem in this truck, with some even losing their speed information. So far it has resolved itself after a while on its own, thankfully, but each time it happens the black out is lasting longer. In order for the dealership to recognize this problem we must drive to them when its occurring, which hasn't been possible. Owning this truck for 2 months and the issue of losing the computer system has occurred 4 times, this vehicle is not a daily driver.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-22
- VIN: 1GTP5BEK1P1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: During normal operations the truck will come to a complete stop. I turned off the ABS and it still happens. It caused a major incident today while I was driving 50mph and it brought me to an abrupt stop on the highway. It’s happened many times but today the driver behind me avoided my truck by an inch. I was then followed y that driver for half a mile when I immediately exited the highway.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-22
- VIN: 1GTP6DEK8P1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Emergency Collison fault problem on the 2023 GMC Canyon Failure Date: 10/22/2023 Driving approximately 45mph while car in front is approximately 50 yards ahead driving at a matched speed as my vehicle and without any prior warning the forward collision alert activated flashing red light on windshield and automatically applying full braking until the truck came to a complete abrupt stop in the center lane of rush hour traffic causing other drivers behind to swerve narrowly avoiding serious accident. I manually DE-activated the automatic braking but kept forward alert on until the truck could be brought to the dealership for diagnosis. Forward alert went off erroneously multiple times the following days without any rhyme or reason. Not until the final day before the scheduled service appointment did the system DE activate itself indicating an issue with the forward collision. Dealer now has vehicle in their possession and confirmed a fault issue. They are working with GM on a solution, but no luck yet.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-25
- VIN: 1GTP6DEK4P1
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The contact owns a 2023 GMC Canyon. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the “Service Safety Restraint System” message was displayed. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 150.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-28
- VIN: 1GTP6DEK7P1
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: GM is pushing updates over the air that are permanently disabling the backup camera by damaging the camera control module. Not sure yet how long we’ll have to wait for the part. I’ve heard of many that have been waiting months. They should not be pushing out defective software when it takes out the safety equipment.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-22
- VIN: 1GTP6BEK0P1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Driving approximately 45mph while car in front is approximately 50 yards ahead driving at a matched speed as my vehicle and without any prior warning the forward collision alert activated flashing red light on windshield and automatically applying FULL braking until the truck came to a complete abrupt stop in the center lane of rush hour traffic causing other drivers behind to swerve narrowly avoiding serious accident. Had the cars been following closer or an 18 wheeler been behind me during this incident, the outcome could have been much worse. Most issues occurred while it was either raining or damp outside. Dealer now has vehicle in their possession and confirmed a faulty component that is on backorder with no date. Truck has had multiple other electrical issues since purchase 3 months ago. ~200 miles dealer replaced faulty HVAC module. ~4500 miles Forward collision alert as described above. Since day one there have also been Issues with trailering harness intermittently not working causing trailer brakes to not function while towing. (Yet to be diagnosed by dealer) Lastly Left turn signal would stick causing turn signal to stay on until manual deactivation. Dealer confirmed faulty turn signal and is in the process of replacing while it is in for service.

- Summary: The contact owns a 2023 GMC Canyon. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, while making a right turn, the left turn signal activated and blinked three times. The contact stated that the Adaptive Cruise Control intermittently activated the brakes independently, and the Forward Collision Avoidance system activated and forced the vehicle to stop abruptly, almost causing a crash. The Forward Collision Avoidance warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the parts to repair the vehicle were on backorder. The failure mileage was approximately 2,251.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-30
- VIN: 1GTP6EEK2P1
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: While driving to work today in fog, the vehicle auto headlights sensed enough light and turned off. Because it was foggy outside I did not feel safe only driving with DRLs on so I attempted to turn on the headlights using the touchscreen controls. The headlights would not turn on. I have video evidence of the headlights not responding to the touch controls and remaining off despite trying to turn them on. I am thrilled with my new GMC Canyon AT4! After owning two Chevrolet Colorado Z71s (2016 with the V6 and 2018 with the baby Duramax), which I absolutely loved, I decided to upgrade to the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 in Volcanic Red. I must say, my new truck is incredibly comfortable and capable. Not only is it the most beautiful truck I have ever owned, but it is also the most beautiful truck I have ever seen. The exterior is stunning, and the interior is well-appointed with the latest technology. People can't help but stop and stare when they see it. I am confident that it will perform exceptionally well, and it fits perfectly in my garage, on city streets, and on Utah mountain dirt roads. I couldn't be happier!
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned that you rode rough. Is everything okay? Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
-
Congratulations on your 52nd vehicle and your first GMC! I must say, the build quality, quietness, driveability, and overall awesomeness of your AT4 is truly top-notch. It's no surprise that people are curious about it - even full-size truck guys, Tacoma guys, and other small truck owners are impressed. I understand that some people complain about the headlight button not being physical, but there's a 'cheat button' on top of the touchscreen that you can hit to see all light options. Plus, with the auto light button, you hardly ever need to think about it. The ride is as smooth as an SUV, and it's just as quiet too. What's not to love? I agree that gas mileage isn't a top priority for a truck, but running premium in it has helped you average 23mpg, which is pretty impressive. While the 2024 TRD Pro Tacoma looks great, I have to say that the lower model 2024 Tacomas don't quite compare. Overall, the AT4 is a solid buy with its 310hp and impressive towing capacity of 7700 lbs.

I've always been a full size truck guy, owning nothing but 1500 Silverados or Sierras my entire life. However, my 2012 Silverado 2500HD extended cab was not a fun drive to load the kids up and go anywhere that wasn't within 20 minutes of the house. It rode and handled so rough at higher speeds, not to mention the limited space and getting about 10mpg. When I saw the new style of the canyon, I knew immediately that's what I wanted. In my opinion, it's the best looking mid-size truck on the road. I bought the AT4 with trailer package and people are always coming up to me complimenting me on it and asking questions. It rides better and quieter than any truck I've ever owned, even better than my wife's 2021 Grand Cherokee. It also has more interior room than my other truck. The front passengers don't even have to adjust the seat when they get in due to the car seat in the back. The interior has plenty of room. My wife and I recently drove it to the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee for our anniversary (about 600 miles) and it operated flawlessly with plenty of power. Although some people feel it should get better fuel mileage for a midsize truck, for me, 18-21 mpg is twice what my 2500HD was getting and was a non-issue. The only issue I've had is my phone wouldn't connect on the 2nd day after I got it. Turned out to be an upgrade issue that my truck hadn't received yet due to it being parked in the garage. Once I backed it out of the garage, the radio upgraded the software and I've had zero issues since. I'm at 8,000 miles and couldn't be happier with this truck so far.

I’ve owned an AT4X for just over 6 months now and I absolutely love it! The dealer handled an ecu recall/update and now I’m enjoying slightly better fuel economy. The ride quality is excellent on the road and my limited experience with the truck off-road and in snow has been outstanding. The transmission shifts properly and the truck provides plenty of power. Although I do think GM could have done better with driver and passenger door storage, that’s just nitpicking. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and would give GM an A+ rating.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Canyon! While it's great to hear that the truck looks sporty and has a quick engine, it's disappointing to hear that the mileage isn't any better than your previous V8 GMC full size. Additionally, it sounds like the ride is stiff and bouncy, and there are some issues with lack of head room and storage space. It's good to know that the back seats are better suited for kids than adults. Your feedback is valuable and will help others make informed decisions. Thank you!

I recently purchased a 2023 GMC Canyon with high hopes and expectations, but unfortunately, my experience has been less than ideal. At just 317 miles on the odometer, the check engine light illuminated, signaling the beginning of a seemingly endless cycle of issues. It's disappointing that a brand-new vehicle would already experience such a critical problem. However, I contacted the dealership, and they assured me that they would take care of the issue under warranty. Although it was inconvenient to bring in a brand-new vehicle for repairs, the dealership was helpful in arranging alternate transportation during the time it took to fix the problem. While this incident has left me with lingering doubts about the overall reliability of the 2023 GMC Canyon, I am hopeful that the dealership's response is indicative of GMC's commitment to quality and customer service. In conclusion, while my experience with the 2023 GMC Canyon has been less than ideal, I would still recommend thoroughly researching this model before making a decision. GMC has the potential to improve its quality control and customer service, and I hope to see positive changes in the future.
