2012 Gmc Canyon problems
The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2012 Gmc Canyon problems
Based on the sources provided, here are the common problems with the 2012 GMC Canyon based on complaints from owners:
- In-Dash Entertainment Unit and Dash Bulbs: Some owners have experienced issues with burnt-out bulbs in the in-dash entertainment unit, headlight switch, and drivers door switch panel/cluster. These components needed replacement due to bulb failures.
- Soft Brake Pedal: Early on, some owners faced a "soft brake pedal" issue that was resolved by replacing the master cylinder. This problem was addressed under warranty and did not pose a significant cost issue.
- Passenger Compartment Ventilation System: Complaints have been made about the ventilation system not functioning correctly, leading to issues with air not coming out when the air conditioning is turned on. This problem may indicate a malfunctioning blower motor or resistor, which may need replacement.
- Timing Chain: One of the significant issues reported is related to the timing chain. In the 1st generation GMC Canyon, the timing chain tends to break, causing the engine to fail to start. If the chain breaks while driving, it can lead to severe engine damage, including piston and valve issues. Regular oil changes with high-quality oil are crucial to prevent this problem.
- PCV Hose: Another common problem is the PCV hose, which can become brittle, crack, or collapse, leading to drivability issues and rough engine performance. This issue is often indicated by a check engine light displaying codes P0300 and P0171. Replacing the PCV hose is the solution, which may require removing the plenum to access it.
- Low Idle Speed: Owners have reported issues with low idle speed, causing the engine to work harder than necessary during acceleration. This problem is often caused by a dirty throttle body, leading to the generation of the P0506 code. Cleaning or replacing the throttle body can resolve this issue.
- EVAP Vent Valve: Problems with the EVAP vent valve have been noted, resulting in a check engine light with code P0450 or other EVAP-related codes. Accumulation of debris can prevent the valve from functioning correctly, necessitating replacement. Checking the gas cap for tightness is also recommended to avoid similar issues.
- These common problems highlight various issues that owners of the 2012 GMC Canyon have faced, ranging from electrical and security concerns to mechanical components like the timing chain and PCV hose. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues can help ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-10
- VIN: 1GTD5MFE7C8
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: On all chevy / canyon models 05 thru 12 there is an issue called "passlock" which prevents the vehicle from starting, it will leave you stranded. The failure is the ignition housing with the passlock sensor, not the actual key / tumbler, the part has to be replaced. The problem / failure is so common that you can "google" 2005 thru 2012 chevy colorado gmc canyon passlock issue" and find the root and a how to fix / repair guides. I spent almost $600 at the GMC dealer, they found no error or trouble codes in either on board computer, I showed the service advisor the issue, online diagnosis and suggested the repair. This is so dam common it should be a defective part recall and all repairs and costs covered by GM / GMC
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-18
- VIN: 1GTJ6MFE2C8
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Within past year, 2022 to present vehicle will on average 4-5 times a month fail to start. Key in ignition, to accessory mode than fail to turn over. All indicator lamps on dash display. Door chime sounds. Nothing to indicate a problem. Had GMC dealership troubleshoot. They found no codes and vehicle would start fine for them (of course). New battery had been installed, starter was tested, fuel injectors cleaned. MY online research has found a similar problem with multiple year GMC vehicles beginning in 2009 thru 2014. Ignition lock cylinder issue due to pass lock sensor. Passlock sensor malfunctions thus requiring a 10 minute wait prior to restarting vehicle. A vehicle requiring 10 minute wait time is a safety issue if we needed this vehicle in an emergency. It's my understanding GMC is aware of this issue but considers it a nuisance and not a critical issue. My thoughts are its a safety issue they"re aware of but don"t care.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-04
- VIN: 1GTD5PFE7C8
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The Passcode Anti-theft system randomly triggers when attempting to start the vehicle. When it triggers, the vehicle cannot be started for at least 10 minutes. I have had this system trigger multiple times at home, at the grocery store, and at a gas station. I am afraid that the device will eventually leave me stranded, so I am having the device replace for the cost of over $700.

2012 Gmc Canyon recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2012 Gmc Canyon.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH
- Summary: General Motors is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon vehicles manufactured from November 9, 2009, through August 28, 2012, for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 113, "Hood Latch System." The hood may be missing the secondary hood latch.
- Consequence: If the primary hood latch is not engaged, the hood could open unexpectedly. During vehicle operation, this could obstruct the view of the driver and increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: General Motors will notify owners and instruct them to inspect their vehicle for the presence of a secondary hood latch. Dealers will replace the hood on any affected vehicles, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS LLC
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT
- Summary: GENERAL MOTORS (GM) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 CHEVROLET COLORADO AND GMC CANYON VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 9, 2011, THROUGH OCTOBER 19, 2011, FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NUMBER 208, "OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION." THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN PRODUCED WITH DRIVER SAFETY BELT BUCKLE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TERMINALS THAT DO NOT FIT SNUGLY WITH THE CONNECTOR PINS, CAUSING THE CONNECTION TO BE INTERMITTENT.
- Consequence: THE LOOSE CONNECTIONS MAY CAUSE THE DRIVER TO NOT RECEIVE A VISUAL OR AUDIBLE WARNING THAT THE DRIVER SEAT BELT IS NOT FASTENED, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: GM WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TERMINALS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 7, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438 AND GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.

I also have a Chevrolet Colorado and I highly recommend the 5-cylinder engine for its impressive speed. I personally chose the 4-cylinder engine because it has more horsepower than any other 4-cylinder truck. These cars are so great that you don't even need to read reviews (experts are not always knowledgeable anyway). They are incredibly fun to drive! I have driven my Colorado for 75,000 miles and the only issue I had was a belt squeak, which was easily fixed by changing the belt. That's why I decided to purchase another one. You may also want to consider the Sierra and Silverado models as they currently have huge rebates. I added bigger tires to my truck and it looks amazing now!
-
I just got this truck with less than 2K miles on it, but before that, I had a GMC Sierra 1500 with 156K miles that I traded in through Cash for Clunkers. The improvements in this truck compared to my 90's era truck are simply amazing! Although it's not the 4x4 model, the 4X2 is still great. Unfortunately, the site doesn't allow the inline 5 cyl. engine 4X2 choice for the crew cab. The power of the 225 c.i. engine is fantastic, much better than my old 4.3 liter V-6 could muster. It even has passing power! I was able to leave a Toyota Tacoma in the dust after a traffic merging. The mileage is about 17-18 mpg in mostly city driving, but it's not really broken-in yet. The interior comfort is top-notch, and the truck drives more like a car than a truck. The crew cab is spacious enough for two adults in the rear.
-
I have a truck with over 240,000 KMS, a four-wheel drive, and a five-cylinder engine. I can't complain about the fuel mileage, which is 28 MPG (imperial) on three extended trips of over 6000 miles. The 3.7 ltr, five-cylinder engine has performed well, even when pulling a loaded trailer of over 6000 pounds. For a mid-sized truck, I would compare it to any brand out there. I have a friend with the same truck, but he has the V6 and does not get the same mileage as I do. He also says that the V6 does not perform well when pulling his travel trailer, which weighs in at 4700 pounds. It's one tough little truck. I'm just waiting to get the next one with the diesel.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you were able to find the 09 V-8 model that you were looking for! It sounds like it was definitely worth the effort. With lots of power and the z71 package to hold it in the road, it must be a blast to drive. I hope you continue to enjoy it and have many more fun drives ahead!
-
The Stabilitrac on this truck is truly amazing! I recently drove through a blizzard in the mountains for 7 hours with 1/2 a foot of snow on the highway, and this truck (2wd) with Firestone Winterforce tires handled it like a champ - no slipping or sliding, it drove perfectly. It also gets great mileage, with 20 city and 28 highway. Out of all the 4cyl pickups I test drove, this one was by far the most powerful. Not to mention, it looks great and I've had no problems with it in the 40,000kms I've driven it. While the front seats are comfortable, the rear seat in the extended cab is a bit small and only suitable for children. However, this little 2wd truck can tow my 3000 boat with ease and can even get through surprisingly deep snow confidently. I would definitely buy another one!

I have extensive experience with this model, having owned one for the past 6 years and driven it for over 50k miles. While I have invested a significant amount of money in repairs during this time, including replacing 4 front wheel bearings at a cost of $700 to $900 each, 2 sets of plugs and coils, a water pump, a fuel pump, a bad cruise control switch on the turn signal stalk, broken exhaust heat shields, and recurring evap and random misfire codes, I can confidently say that this model is a reliable and durable vehicle. Unfortunately, due to frame corrosion, I will soon be retiring it at around 150k miles.
