2022 Gmc Canyon problems

gmc logo

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2022 Gmc Canyon problems

The GMC Canyon has been a popular choice for drivers seeking a premium midsize pickup since its introduction in 2004. However, like any vehicle, it has had its share of problems over the years. Here are some of the most common issues reported by GMC Canyon owners:

  • Loss of HVAC Blower Speeds: One of the most common problems reported by GMC Canyon owners is the loss of one or more blower speeds in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system.
  • Engine Misfires: Another common problem reported by GMC Canyon owners is engine misfires caused by worn valve seats. This issue has been reported by 73 owners and typically occurs after 107,000 miles. If the engine misfires, the cylinder head might need replacing, which can be a costly repair.
  • Check Engine Light Due to Gas Cap Issue: A worn or loose gas cap can cause the check engine light to illuminate in the GMC Canyon. This problem has been reported by 52 owners and is typically caused by a faulty gas cap. If you suspect this is the problem, take your Canyon to an auto parts store and ask an employee to check the code before paying for a diagnostic test.
  • Transmission Problems: Transmission problems have been a significant issue for GMC Canyon owners, with the 2015 model year being the worst.
  • Power Steering Stopped Working While Driving: This problem has been reported by GMC Canyon owners and can be a serious safety issue. The average cost to fix this problem is $500, and it typically occurs at 69,000 miles.
  • Jerks, Shudders, Chugs, and Slips: This problem has been reported by GMC Canyon owners and can be a serious safety issue. The average cost to fix this problem is not available, and it typically occurs at 13,000 miles.

Overall, the GMC Canyon has had its share of problems, but with a relatively low number of reported problems, it is still a mostly problem-free truck.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-15
  • VIN: 1GTG5EENXN1
  • Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: While driving out of a parking lot, my power steering stopped working and I had to regain control to manually steer the vehicle. After stopping and turning off the engine to check the serpentine belt, the power steering came back on, but the lane departure assist function was no longer working. It appears to be the same problem that some of the 2015 and other GMC Canyon models had. Took it to my GMC dealer for warranty evaluation.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
  • VIN: 1GTG6CEN7N1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Key gets stuck in ignition when attempting to turn off vehicle. This leaves people stranded with their vehicles in hot/cold weather, dangerous areas, etc... Many people have been bypassing this problem by removing steering column and disconnecting a wire that allows the key to be released. But disconnection of said wire allows the key to be removed and shut off at any time, including driving down the highway at 70mph, serious safety hazard for driver and those on the road. Dealer has confirmed this issue and currently working on repairing my vehicle but it is a widespread issue with certain GM vehicles to include the canyon, colorado, camaro, and equinox.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • VIN: 1GTG6FEN2N1

  • Summary: Service Power Steering, Drive with care warning comes on, vehicle looses all power steering. First time it happen was around November 2023. This will happen randomly, at various speeds, sometimes going straight, sometimes turning. Power steering will come back after a few minutes sometimes, a few times vehicle had to be turned off for a hour, but was out for over 3 days one time. During that incident we ran OBD scanner, C0800 code was showing for Power Steering Control Module, recommended repair was the replace battery, even though the battery was good. We went ahead and replaced the battery anyways, issue was not immediately resolved but after running the truck for an hour and then going for a test drive power steering returned a mile down the road. That was around May 11th. Issue hadn’t returned until today, June 22nd where it’s went on and off a handful of time before totally loosing power steering for over 5 hours now. 2015 model years had an issue the power steering rack wiring, dealer said they assume it could be same issue. Connections to the steering rack where check and corrosion was found but they won’t fix because it’s not a recall even though it’s the same corrosion issue the 2015 models had.

Negative 2022 Gmc Canyon car reviews

  1. Skye Johns 2024-09-01

How does the cost compare to that of a full-size truck?

  2. Brycen Vandervort 2024-07-03

The 2022 GMC Canyon AT4 is a good looking truck, but the back is quite small and not very useful. Additionally, the gas mileage while driving at 70 is only 22 mpg and the 4x4 gearing is not quite right.

  3. Mohamed Reilly 2024-04-16

I would love to buy a Canyon, but unfortunately, the backseat is too small for my teenage and adult passengers who are 5 feet or taller. It would be great if the designers could make the MIDSIZE CREW CABS more spacious and realistic for real people. Perhaps a slight slope in the seat would help. Additionally, reducing the truck bed by a foot could increase the Crew Cab knee/foot room and make everyone happy. It would also be nice to have more legroom width-wise between the front seats. If the cup holder and gear shift design were narrower, the driver would not feel so cramped. I must say that I loved everything else in the truck, especially the dashboard, which looked much better than the new Frontier. Lastly, it would be a great addition to have a regular electrical plug in both the backseat and the back bed of the truck.

  4. Charles Hoeger 2024-02-13

I am sorry to hear that you are not enjoying your GMC Canyon Evolution Edition after one year of ownership. It sounds like you have experienced some discomfort with the seats and ride quality, as well as some frustrating electrical issues. I can understand why you would advise others to consider alternative options. Thank you for sharing your honest feedback.

Positive 2022 Gmc Canyon car reviews

  1. Ethel Jerde 2024-11-27

I can tell you really enjoy canyons! It sounds like you've had some experience with them, and even have a new one on order. I think it's great that you've found a small truck that meets your needs, especially since you used to buy a new full-size truck every year.

  2. Ryley Reichel 2024-10-23

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the 2022 Canyon Elevation package. Overall, the ride is good and the fuel economy is impressive. However, I did have some trouble with the blind spot monitoring system. There's only a small inset mirror on the driver's side and nothing on the passenger side, which can be frustrating. Additionally, there are no sensors to help with this. On the bright side, the truck does have a useful setup for trailer braking. One thing to note is that the cruise control is not adaptive, which was a bit disappointing for a truck at this price point. Overall, I think the Canyon Elevation package is a solid choice, but there are a few areas where it could be improved. Thanks for reading!

  3. Stephan Funk 2024-10-06

Hi there! I noticed that the car you're interested in has a few features missing, such as power fold mirrors, rear window auto braking, and dual heater. Don't worry though, we can definitely help you find a car that has all the features you need. Let's chat more about what you're looking for!

  4. Bernardo Volkman 2024-09-22

Had this for 7 months now. Love it. Best truck ever. Low key work horse!

  5. Elmer Hayes 2024-09-20

I can see that you appreciate reliability, power, comfort, style, leather, upgrades, and towing and hauling capabilities. On the other hand, it seems that you are not a fan of transmission skips, Jerry gear shifting and differential, and poor gas mileage.
