2017 Gmc Canyon problems

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

  • VIN: 1GTG5CEN7H1
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: The transmission shudders terribly. It is available for inspection. It is unsafe because while in traffic situations, it doesn't get up to speed correctly. It is as if it can't find the gear, it feels like it is about to stall. It is not dependable to stay at a speed, or increase speed. The dealership said that changing the transmission fluid would help, and it did for a while. The problem came back, we had the fluid changed again. The problem came right back again.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-03
  • VIN: 1GTG6DEN4H1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The central control screen goes through a rapid, seemingly random series of "ghost touch" control changes. It cannot be stopped or shut down. It often changes the language of all screens in the vehicle (I cannot read French), shifts the instrument panel screen from speedometer to any of a large number of random screens, changes rear camera settings or deactivates it, changes bluetooth and telephone settings, and any of dozens of other actions many of which have a direct and immediate impact on vehicle safety. It serves as a terrible driver distraction because the driver has to do whatever they can to keep the screen from making unsafe changes to the vehicle settings. The driver's attention is divided between whatever the screen is doing and what is happening on the road.

The contact stated that the vehicle was towed to the dealer where the failure was diagnosed as the diesel particulate filter would not complete a burn. A manual regeneration was completed. The contact stated that the failure recurred after 2,500 miles in November 2022 and the vehicle was taken to the dealer, Kelley Buick GMC (255 W Van Fleet Dr, Bartow, FL 33830) where another manual regeneration was completed. The contact stated that the dealer informed him that if the failure reoccurred, he would need to purchase a filter for $2,000. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to inform when a burn was needed as other diesel vehicles were equipped with the burn alert system along with a switch to complete the burn. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated there were no recalls for the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000.

Upon inspection, it was discovered that a hair-like fiber was present coming from the exhaust pipes. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who informed that the temperature gauge and exhaust system was faulty and needed to be replaced. The hair-like fibers were not identified. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-15
  • VIN: 1GTG6DEN2H1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: After 5 years and 2 months of ownership of this vehicle, at ~52,000 miles it began to develop a shudder in the driveline, that I originally ascribed to an imbalanced rear wheel. After checking the rear wheels for balance, that cause was ruled out. I took the vehicle back to the GMC dealer where I had purchased it new. They claimed that the cause of the problem was a defective transmission fluid that somehow became contaminated with water. They offered to flush the entire transmission and install new 100% synthetic transmission fluid for a cost of $770. When I complained about a vehicle with 52,000 miles developing transmission problems the dealer consulted with GMC, and then agreed to flush and replace the allegedly defective fluid without cost. Upon further investigation, it appears as though the origin of the issue is not due to the nature of the fluid, but rather the use of an undersized torque convertor in this 8-speed transmission, which began in the 2017 model year. The smaller size and inadequacy of this torque convertor design is the root cause of this shudder, which not only has presented itself in the 2017 GMC, but also in corresponding GMC/Chevrolet models using the same transmission. The danger of a transmission failure can have catastrophic safety consequences for the driver, passengers as well as the motoring public, not to mention a very large transmission replacement charge for the owner. There is currently a Class Action lawsuit in the State of California for this notorious "Chevy Shake."

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-04
  • VIN: 1GTG6DEN2H1
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuel/Emissions: I have a 2017 GMC Canyon; I am not able to fuel the truck without the use of a funnel. As soon as I start fueling, it shuts off and "spits gas" on my clothes. When I do use the funnel, it takes me almost 20 minutes to fuel the truck. I have read in forums that it is a common occurrence with the 2017 Colorado and Canyons. I have tried to explain to the dealer that it may have a clogged evap canister. The dealership was dismissive and said it was a purge valve. The dealership changed the valve but failed to fix the issue. I returned to let them know and was told it would be days before anyone would look at the vehicle even though I did call and was told to bring it. Two things, evap canister is part of the emissions system and is to cut down on the emissions, and secondly, the gas gets everywhere when it "spits" it out because the vapers have no where to go. This is the only vehicle my wife and I have and is a good truck. There are plenty of forums such as coloradofans.com on line where others have the same issue. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-27
  • VIN: 1GTG6EEN0H1
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My key frequently gets suck in the ignition. During this event, I cannot remove the key and the vehicle will NOT shut down electrically (motor turns off). I have had it in the dealer shop 3 times for this same issue. I have had the key lodged at times for several hours which may require battery assistance. The "repairs" were made at Ideal buick GMC in Frederick, Maryland but the problem persists. I have read online blogs describing this problem by other owners. What can I expect as far as actually resolving this issue?

GMC confirmed and repaired the 2015 and 2016 model years; but, has so far refused to acknowledge or repair my 2017 model; even though, from information available to me, it is the same part with the same problem. The dealership quoted me $2,500 for repairs.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-03
  • VIN: 1GTG6DEN9H1
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I have a fuel leak coming from the top of the fuel tank and running down the side of the tank. The leak occurs when the vehicle is running so it's appears to be coming from the high pressure fuel line or top of the fuel pump. It appears to be exactly what is described in NHTSA Campaign Number 18V358000 and in GMC Recall 18188 however GMC Customer Support told me recall 18188 only applies to the 2018 year model and not my 2017. When I search for recalls on NHTSA by VIN it tells me 0 unrepaired Recalls. My wife and I both smelled gasoline Friday afternoon when we returned from a trip. We have not driven the vehicle since. I started the vehicle and let it idle in our driveway and after a couple of minutes fuel began to leak and run down the side of the gas tank.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-31
  • VIN: 1GTP6DE18H1
  • Components: ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: This is the 2nd time this has happened. The 1st time making a left onto route 23 from route 296 in Windham NY. Almost got T-Boned. Stalled wouldn't start. Waited 5 minutes and it started again. Ran rough then died again thankfully in a more opportune spot. MY car randomly & without warning loses all power and electric and shuts down. The 1st time I had it towed to Matthews GMC (where I purchased 4 pick ups) and they stated it was a NOX sensor and repaired it. Saturday this happened again while driving at 55 MPH and stalled on a blind curve (very scary). I left a complaint on this website to hopefully prevent a fatality. I thought I would recieve a response from you the NTSB but didn't. I went online and noticed there a a number of folks that had the same problem. Do you wait for fatalities before action is taken??

I have dealer appointment for Wednesday August 4th 2021 to have it checked.

Negative 2017 Gmc Canyon car reviews

  1. Rollin King 2024-11-21

I've been driving trucks and SUVs for over 25 years, and while this one is definitely a looker, I've found the engine to be quite sluggish when going up the hills of Western Pennsylvania. Despite this, it does ride nicely over 55 and has a good amount of space. The front seats could be more comfortable, but overall it's a decent ride. The Bose audio is just okay, although I did notice a speaker rattle when I turned up the volume. Since it's a company truck, I can't complain too much, but I do think it would benefit from a V8 engine given its weight. I also found the brake assist while going downhill to be a bit unnecessary, as I'm confident in my own braking abilities.

  2. Lon Brekke 2024-10-12

My 2016 GMC Canyon with 90k miles experienced a catastrophic transmission failure despite minimal towing (< 1,000 miles). However, after conducting thorough research, I have found that this Diesel drivetrain has received numerous complaints and negative reviews. The repair cost of $5,700 is necessary to address this issue with confidence.

  3. Zackary Schmitt 2024-08-29

My truck has had some issues, such as leaking water into the cab and problems with the four-wheel drive not working properly. Unfortunately, it has been in the shop multiple times for these issues. However, I have found a solution to the moisture problem by using humidity control devices. I am hopeful that the current repair will finally fix the four-wheel drive issue. Overall, I have had some challenges with my truck, but I am optimistic that they will be resolved.

  4. Carey Lind 2024-08-04

The truck is too high, making it difficult for me and my wife to reach the bottom of the bed without a stool. I had to add a receiver hitch and a 6Hi there! Have you considered buying a used 2012 Canyon? They tend to be a lot cheaper and come with 15

  5. Godfrey Considine 2024-07-25

Firstly, I would like to bring to Edmunds' attention that the model with a Diesel engine is not listed. Despite this, I must say that I love the vehicle. However, I was disappointed when the protruding portion of the rear wheel area was blasted by gravel on the first gravel road I went on. It would have been helpful if the vehicle had mud flaps on the front. Perhaps it would be beneficial for dealers to recommend or even install mud flaps. I kindly suggest that GMC considers this oversight. Thank you.

Positive 2017 Gmc Canyon car reviews

  1. Quinn Kunze 2024-11-22

Good fuel mileage between 20 and 27. Great turning radius. Comfortable ride overall. I was involved in an accident where I was hit in the passenger front tire and flipped on its side. The car was totaled, but thankfully my son and I both walked away with minor injuries. Having Onstar was great.

  2. Isac Hills 2024-11-10

I've had this truck for a year and a half and I absolutely love it! I purchased it specifically to tow my 6500 pound boat twice a year. I didn't want a full-size pickup with lower mpg and a larger size, even though it would tow better. My Canyon tows my boat with ease and gets right up to speed on the highway. The interior is plenty comfortable for me at 5'10'', but if you're a bigger guy, it might be a little tight. I average 19.5 mpg with everyday driving and 24.5 mpg on the highway. Even though this is a midsize truck, it's still a strong, powerful, and heavy-duty vehicle. I'm excited to lease another one once my current lease is up. I highly recommend the Canyon or Colorado!

  3. Roy Kilback 2024-11-06

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my truck that I purchased back in October 2015 with only 20k miles. Despite having to go to the dealer for 3 recalls, I've only needed oil changes and tire rotations. It's actually my first truck and I'm pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it is. It also tows my 2,000lb boat much better than my SUV did. The only issue I've had is with the transmission shifting a bit funky when accelerating from 20-30MPH, but overall it's been a super vehicle. On my work commute, I average 22MPG and have even gotten 28MPG while cruising the coast at 60 MPH. Thanks for listening!

  4. Randy Pfannerstill 2024-11-01

I had the opportunity to test drive the Canyon Denali this week and overall, I really liked the truck. However, I did have some trouble finding a comfortable driving position due to the lack of adjustment in the power seat and the front of the seat being too tall. Unfortunately, this issue made me decide not to purchase it. Despite this setback, I still think it's a nice truck overall. It's worth noting that while this is a Denali, the seat could use some improvement.

I've only had the Canyon for a few weeks now, but I'm already loving it! I decided to go with the 2016 model since there weren't many changes made to the 2017 version. Even though I wasn't originally looking for a diesel, after doing some research, I realized it was the right choice for me. One of the major factors was the reduced pricing - I was able to buy it for 37K + fees, which was a great deal. If it had been over 40k, I would have gone with the Sierra instead. So far, I'm really impressed with how easy it is to park compared to a full-size truck, and it fits perfectly in my garage. The crew cab has plenty of room for my family of four, and the fuel mileage is a huge plus. I also love the exterior design - it looks like a smaller version of the Sierra, which is really cool. The leather interior, infotainment system, and backup camera are all great features too. I can't wait to tow something or take it up into the mountains and hear the purr of the duramax! However, I do have one complaint - the driver's seat doesn't have enough adjustments and isn't very comfortable on longer drives. I'm an average build, so I was surprised by this. I ended up buying a cushion at Costco for some extra padding. Also, the cubbies in the doors are completely useless and the hard plastic feels a bit cheap. Overall though, I'm really happy with my purchase!
