2005 Gmc Canyon problems

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2005 Gmc Canyon problems

Based on complaints from owners of the GMC Canyon 2005, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Stalling: Owners have reported instances of the engine stalling, which can be a significant safety concern while driving. This issue can lead to sudden loss of power and control over the vehicle, posing a risk of accidents.
  2. Engine Misfires: Another prevalent problem is engine misfires, which can result in poor performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential damage to the engine components over time. Addressing this issue promptly is crucial to maintain the engine's health.
  3. Hesitation: Hesitation in acceleration or response to throttle input has been reported by owners. This can lead to unpredictable driving behavior and compromise the overall driving experience and safety of the vehicle.
  4. Starting Issues: Some owners have faced difficulties with the engine refusing to start, which can be frustrating and inconvenient, especially in critical situations. This problem can be indicative of underlying issues with the vehicle's electrical or fuel system.
  5. Brake Caliper Noise: Loud squealing noises when hitting the brake pedal have been a common complaint. This issue, often traced back to the stock brake calipers, can affect driving comfort and may indicate brake system problems that need attention.
  6. Climate Control Malfunction: Owners have reported problems with the truck's air conditioning system not working correctly. Issues with the climate control system can lead to discomfort for occupants, especially in extreme weather conditions.
  7. Transmission Problems: While not specific to the 2005 model year, transmission issues have been a recurring problem in GMC Canyons. Complaints include slipping torque converters, rough shifting, and premature clutch failure, which can impact the vehicle's drivability and overall performance.

Addressing these common problems promptly through proper maintenance, timely repairs, and, if necessary, seeking professional assistance can help ensure the optimal performance and safety of the GMC Canyon 2005.

Yes, I work at a gm dealership and see this issue often, they are very similar to the Toyota trucks that had rusted frames replaced under recall. No it has not been inspected but they're is no way that it would pass an annual inspection, therefore the truck is rendered useless. There were no warnings that the frame was almost rotted in half. Very dangerous situation.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-12-10
  • VIN: 1GTDS196X58
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY 2005 GMC CANYON CONTINUES TO HAVE ISSUES WITH THE PASSLOCK II SYSTEM. NO MODIFICATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE IGNITION SWITCH, KEYS, OR ANY OTHER ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE PASSLOCK PREVENTS ME FROM STARTING MY TRUCK BECAUSE FOR SOME REASON THE COMPUTER THINKS IT IS TRYING TO BE STOLEN. THE LAST TIME THIS ISSUE OCCURED, MY TRUCK WAS PARKED IN MY GARAGE. WHEN ATTEMPTED TO START, THE TRUCK CRANKED BUT DID NOT START AND THE PASSLOCK LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD TO SIT AND WAIT FOR 10 MINUTES UNTIL THE LIGHT WENT OFF. THE PROBLEM WAS I WAS TRYING TO DRIVE MYSELF TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM BECAUSE I HAD JUST BEEN BITTEN BY A DOG.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-09-21
  • VIN: 1GTDT196558
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I TOOK MY TRUCK TO A LOCAL SHOP TO HAVE THE FUEL SYSTEM LOOKED AT AFTER I STARTED SMELLING FUEL. THE SERVICE MANAGER CALLS ME THAT EVENING AND REQUEST I LOOK AT THE TRUCK WHILE IT IS ON THE LIFT SO I CAN SEE THE FRAME FOR MYSELF AS THE FUEL SYSTEM WOULD BE THE LEAST OF MY CONCERNS ONCE I SAW THE FRAME. THE REAR OF THE FRAME FROM THE REAR SPRING HANGER BACK IS ROTTED AWAY ON A 12-YEAR-OLD TRUCK THAT HAS NO BODY RUST AND SOME RUST ON THE OTHER PARTS OF THE FRAME AS TO BE EXPECTED FOR THE AGE. I HAVE ATTACHED PICTURES OF THE SPRING HANGER DETACHED FROM THE FRAME DUE TO THE LACK OF STRUCTURAL SUPPORT AND PICTURES OF THE BAD FRAME SECTION AND THE REST OF THE FRAME ALONG WITH A PICTURE OF THE TRUCK. I HAVE OWNED THE TRUCK SINCE IT WAS NEW AND TAKEN CARE OF IT AND AM TROUBLED THAT A STRUCTURAL ITEM SUCH AS A FRAME ONLY IN ONE SECTION, THE SAME SECTION, ON BOTH SIDES IS IN SUCH BAD SHAPE THAT THE MECHANIC RECOMMENDED THAT I REPLACE THE FRAME. I KNOW I LIVE IN AN AREA THAT RECEIVES SNOW AND THE ROADS ARE SALTED BUT CLEANED MY TRUCK FREQUENTLY TO WASH THE SALT OFF OF IT BUT A TRUCK WITH 112,500 MILES THAT IS 12 YEARS OLD SHOULD NOT HAVE A STRUCTURAL FAILURE WHILE ALL OTHER PARTS INCLUDING THIN SHEET METAL ARE STILL IN GREAT SHAPE AND HAVE NOT BEEN PAINTED. THE ONLY REPAINTED ITEMS ON THE TRUCK ARE THE HOOD (AFTERMARKET) AND TAILGATE. SO WHY DOES THIS TRUCK HAVE A ROTTED STRUCTURAL COMPONENT?
2017-05-23

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-05-22
  • VIN: 1GTDT136358
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: 2005 CREW CAB GMC CANYON Z85 SLE - LOCALIZED FRAME DETERIORATION DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST COMPLETELY THROUGH THE BOX FRAME. NO OTHER AREAS ON FRAME DISPLAY MORE THAN SURFACE RUST. PRESENT FROM DRIVERS SIDE REAR DOOR TO ABOVE THE FRAME ELEVATION CHANGE, INCLUDING THE MOUNTING BRACKET FOR THE REAR LEAF SPRING. HOLES AND SEAMS COMPLETELY OPEN IN AFFECTED AREAS. STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY COMPROMISED AT JOINT OF CAB TO THE BED OF TRUCK. VEHICLE IS STILL FUNCTIONAL BUT DAMAGE TO THIS AREA DOES NOT ALLOW FOR TRUCK TO BE USED AS INTENDED. ANY SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT IN BED MAY CAUSE FRAME TO COLLAPSE. NOT RELATED TO ANY SPECIFIC INCIDENT. NO FAILURE TO OPERATE AT THIS TIME.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-02-17
  • VIN: 1GTDS196X58
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY TRUCK IS EXHIBITING AN ISSUE IN WHICH THE GM PASSLOCK SYSTEM DISABLES THE FUEL AND ENGINE BECAUSE OF SOME MALFUNCTION. THIS SYSTEM IS INTENDED TO DISABLE THE FUEL SYSTEM ON A VEHICLE IF IT DETECTS THAT THE IGNITION HAS BEEN TAMPERED WITH OR IN IMPROPER KEY HAS BEEN USED TO TRY AND START THE VEHICLE. MY ISSUE IS THAT INTERMITTENTLY WHEN I TRY TO START MY TRUCK WITH THE FACTORY KEY, THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM ENGAGES AND DOES NOT ALLOW ME TO START MY TRUCK. I HAVE TO WAIT 10 MINUTES IN ORDER FOR THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM LIGHT TO TURN OFF ON THE DASHBOARD. SOMETIMES MY TRUCK WILL START AFTER THIS 10 MINUTE LOCKOUT PERIOD. IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE WHERE MY TRUCK WILL FAIL TO START AFTER THE FIRST LOCKOUT PERIOD AND I HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER 10 MINUTES. ONCE THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM ALLOWS ME TO START THE ENGINE, MY TRUCK RUNS FINE WITH NO ISSUES. IN MY OPINION, THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. IN ANY EMERGENCY SITUATION, I WOULD HOPE TO DEPEND ON MY TRUCK STARTING. THIS MALFUNCTIONING PASSLOCK SYSTEM PREVENTS ME FROM STARTING MY TRUCK. MY GREATEST ISSUE WITH THIS SITUATION IS THAT MY TRUCK IS NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT IS AFFECTED BY THIS. A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH OF "GMC CANYON PASSLOCK" WILL SHOW PAGES UPON PAGES OF FORUMS OF OTHER TRUCK OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I LIVE IN AN AREA OF THE COUNTRY WITH A HIGH RISK OF FOREST FIRES. I KNOW FRIENDS WHO HAVE BEEN EVACUATED FROM THEIR HOMES IN THE PAST. I HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT THIS MALFUNCTION OF MY TRUCK COULD GREATLY IMPACT MY ABILITY TO EVACUATE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

STEERING,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-08-01
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GTDT196758
  • Components: STEERING,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: HIT 3 DEER IN HIGH SPEED COLLISION. MY AIR BAGS DIDN'T FUNCTION. THEN RESEARCH ONLINE SHOWED I HAVE TIKATA AIRBAGS. THEN I NOTICED MY BRAKES IF WET OR HAVE ICE ON ROTORS, WHEN BRAKING, I GET TERRIBLE SQUEAKING NOISE AND FRONT END WILL SHIMMY OR VIBRATE. REAR BRAKES TOO. AND MY POWER STEERING STARTED MAKING NOISE, LIKE A RUBBING SOUND A FEW MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT TRUCK, THOUGH NO FLUID LOSS OR STIFFNESS IN STEERING. I KNOW THESE AIR BAGS ARE DANGEROUS, METAL PARTS HAVE KILLED A FEW PEOPLE. WHY WASN'T I NOTIFIED BY AUTOMAKER ABOUT WHAT AIRBAGS WERE INSTALLED IN MY TRUCK!? I NEED FIXED. I DO A LOT OF MOUNTAIN DRIVING. I WOULD LIKE THEM TO WORK PROPERLY. AND THESE STRANGE NOISES REALLY BUG ME. I CAN'T BE BREAKING DOWN DEEP INTO MOUNTAIN ROADS WHEN I WORK OR TRAVEL. MUCH HIGHWAY TRAVELING TOO. THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS NEVER WORKED, SINCE TWO WEEKS AFTER BUYING TRUCK. IF COMING UP TO HILLS WHEN SET, THEN AS YOU DRIVE UP & DOWN MORE HILLS, IT WILL SELF EXCELLERATE! NOT SLOW DOWN ON DECLINES. VERY SCARY A COUPLE OF TIMES. VERY DANGEROUS! ENGINE WOULD JUMP INTO PASSING GEAR. I HAVE THE 5 CYLINDER 3.5 MOTOR. AUTOMATIC, SLE EXTENDED CAB 4X4. SHOULD I GO BACK TO DEALER TO GET FIXED?

2010-11-18
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: CHILD SEAT
  • Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.
  • Consequence: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: GM IS RECALLING 185,903 MODEL YEAR 2004-2009 COLORADO, GMC MODEL YEAR 2009-2004 CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006 I-280, I-350, MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 I-290, AND I-370, PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND UTAH. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.
  • Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE SIMULTANEOUS LOSS OF ALL BRAKE LAMPS OR CAUSE ALL OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY JUNE 2010. A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. IN THE INTERIM, OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE CAN OBTAIN A FREE REPAIR, HOWEVER THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO RETURN WHEN THE NEW DESIGN PART BECOMES AVAILABLE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

The valve line has had to be rebuilt twice due to undersized valve springs at 12,000 miles. However, this issue can be resolved by adjusting the valve spring strength to ensure proper valve recovery. While the 5 cylinder engine provides sufficient power, it may encounter issues in the future. Therefore, it would be beneficial to offer the 6 cylinder engine as an option. Additionally, it would be ideal to offer 16 inch tires instead of the current 15 inch ones.

I am confident in my decision to seek a new truck after experiencing multiple issues with my current one. Despite my initial admiration for its appearance, the truck has required frequent visits to the shop, including a replacement engine and head at only 25,000 miles. Although this repair was covered under warranty, I am now facing another issue with the head at 65,000 miles. Additionally, the brakes and tires needed replacement within 25,000 miles, and the air conditioning system and CD player have also proven to be problematic. Despite following all recommended GM services, the truck has not lived up to my expectations. I am currently exploring my options and will be contacting GM to address my concerns. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my truck so far. I purchased it in October and have already put 4110 miles on it, but it's been a great ride. The fuel mileage wasn't great at first, but like other owners have mentioned, it's improving as it breaks in. The handling is pretty good for a truck and the ride is decent, although it can be a bit stiff since mine is the 4x4 z-71. The inline-5 motor has plenty of power, but it could use a stronger sound. While it's more powerful than the old 4.3L v-6, it doesn't quite have the same powerful sound. I previously drove a 4.3L powered 2000 Blazer 4x4 4door and I do miss that extra 25lb-ft of torque that the 4.3L has over the inline-5. I haven't had a chance to try out the 4wd yet, but it seems pretty strong. Thanks for listening!

I purchased this truck as a gift to myself for my 50th birthday and BA degree graduation, and it has exceeded my expectations. Although I experienced a minor issue with a squeaky radio, the dealer provided a kit that resolved the problem. The vehicle has been reliable and only required one recall visit to the shop. I ensure to follow the recommended oil change schedule to maintain its longevity. However, I have noticed that the molding around the rear tires is coming loose, which is a concern. Overall, I am thoroughly impressed with this truck, and it provides a comfortable ride (even my carpooler mentioned that the heated leather seats have helped his back more than his chiropractor!).

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new truck! It sounds like it has a lot of great features, like the powerful engine and the easy-to-use interior controls. It's also great to hear that it's handling your towing needs well. And the fact that it's more fuel-efficient than your old truck is definitely a plus! Thanks for sharing your positive experience with the GMC Canyon, and I hope you continue to enjoy it for years to come!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with this truck. I was lucky enough to find it used with only 20,000 miles on it, and it's been great so far! The previous owner took really good care of it, and it shows. I'm getting a consistent 26 mpg with the 3.5 and auto trans, which is amazing for a truck this size. I really can't complain - it's a well-built, reliable truck. Plus, it's American-made! I looked at other brands, but I truly believe that the GMC is just as good as any other truck out there. Thanks for listening!

I'm thrilled to share my experience with my 2005 GMC Canyon Crew Cab (with all the goodies). It has been a superb performer, providing me with reliable, comfortable, and substantial rides. The fit and trim are good on the upgraded version with leather seats, etc. (not excellent, but good). I'm particularly fond of the sun/moonroof, which is a must-have for me as a convertible owner in California. Although I've been a Ford fan for the last twenty+ years (including F-150 & Rangers), this GMC Canyon is encroaching on that favored status. I must admit that the low-speed torque is lacking somewhat in this 3.5l truck, but to me, it's not a big deal. The auto transmission is smooth, as is the 5-cyl. engine. I'm also impressed with the DRLs, which are a great safety feature.
