2018 Gmc Canyon problems

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-23
  • VIN: 1GTP6EE14J1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Major potential for deadly fire or explosion. Fuel tank strapped failed after forward strap bolt fell out of threaded cross member where fastened in frame. The failure led to the fuel tank hanging inches off the ground on the freeway stressing fuel pump lines to forward upper tank. Metal grinding noises heard to prompt roadside inspection confirming hanging, unsecured tank full of 26gal of diesel. The tank wedged the fuel tank strap between plastic tank and drive shaft (propeller shaft) with heat and potentially spark as the the metal strap ground into the drive shaft marring and striating the durable metal. Heat and plastic melts, heat and spark with diesel combusts..in addition to risking of dragging tank at highway speed rupturing tank. Upon service at the dealer, mechanic observed the rear bolt to fuel strap was also loose and needed to be secured. GMC Protection Plan denied compensation for coverage as they do not cover "bolts, fuel straps, or manufacturer defects" under advertised "Bumper to Bumper" GMC Protection Plan marketed by GMC dealerships as protection for all non-wearable parts. No warning indicators appeared. My dog was in the truck bed in a camper shell directly above the potentially massive fire or explosion, this could have been catastrophic if it had been ignored. Additionally I was in northern California and southern Oregon when issue presented- potentially causing a major forest fire incident. While my outcome was fortunate in terms of safety, this could claim lives and even massive incidental loss of property. Vehicle has been inspected by local dealer and GM notified, hoping to receive coverage for damaged parts. Interestingly, there was previously a GM recall involving forward fuel strap dislodging and wearing into drive shaft on previous years of GM vehicles. No notable corrosion observed, bolts in question are high on frame secured to protected cross members, occurred at approximately 75K miles. I have photos on another device, if needed.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-29
  • VIN: 1GTG6CEN0J1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: When placing the vehicle in reverse, the infotainment screen goes to full brightness on the reverse camera, making it difficult to see at night by lighting up the cabin causing interior reflections when trying to see out the windows at mirrors or behind the vehicle. There is no way to adjust the brightness setting. This is a pointless feature as the camera becomes the required visual point and is sometimes obscured by dirt or water so the driver is forced to fight the bright useless screen to see out the windows.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-16
  • VIN: 1GTP6DE12J1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was traveling on a two lane highway, a semi in front of me and a truck behind me. A warning message popped up on my dash “Service Emissions System- 65 mi before 65mph max speed”. And within 5 seconds of that message popping up, the engine detuned itself. I pulled over as quick as I could, but I only made it partially out of the road before the engine shut down completely. I couldn’t start the vehicle again to get it the rest of the way out of the road. I was 40 miles from the nearest town on a Sunday. I had to turn on my flashers and sit outside the vehicle for 4 hours until a tow truck was able to come get me. Thankfully at the time of incident I was on a rural highway and I wasn’t hurt, but I could have been seriously injured haha this happened on the freeway or a road in the city. It then sat at the dealership for 3 months following this to get a diagnostic and repair.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-04
  • VIN: 1gtg6cen9j1
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: At age 4 years and mileage 40,000 the engine oil coolant lines failed, causing a loss of oil. Because of the location of these lines in front of and above the front axle, the potential for oil contamination of the tire running surfaces and the brake rotor existed. Fortunately, we did not drive it any distance and were extremely cautious. In looking at the parts, which we have replaced, they show much more corrosive damage than I would have expected for the trucks age. A cursory search online revealed that this is not an uncommon problem for the gm Canyon/Colorado lines.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-07
  • VIN: 1GTG5CEN7J1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The transmission has a rough shift from 1st to 2nd, whether it is upshifting or downshifting, and isn't always predictable. This rough shift often feels like a lurching forwards when it shifts from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st it feels like something hits me in the back and shoves me forward. The 1st to 2nd often makes me feel out of control of the vehicle and while it hasn't endangered anyone as of yet, I am concerned that it will push my into the car in front of me one day. The 2nd to 1st shift also causes me concern for how it may cause me a neck injury if I'm not always focused when I'm close to that shift point. The problem has not be reproduced by a dealer or independent service center, though I do plan to take it when I have the time in the near future. The problem has not been inspected by anyone. There are no warning lights, messages, or other symptom to indicate the problem will occur.

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-18
  • VIN: 1GTH5BEN0J1
  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Transmission slipped almost from start. Took three appointments and two years - If my shop foreman knew the third time, why did he not call and tell me we now know your problem. I finally got fed up and brought it in one more time. Starter from day ONE maybe 50% of time made loud bang when Bendix retracted. Shop refused to take it off!!! I checked ball joint boots. One feels like no grease in it. They 'LOOKED' at it. No answer and nothing was done. Has had 'lifter noise' since new when small acceleration. Noise rate accelerates till shift and then repeats. I'm told they don't hear anything. I am 76 and hard of hearing. Pleeeeeze - don't tell me there isn't any. Not my best day today and felt it's time to say crap is crap.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-01
  • VIN: 1GTP6EE12J1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I have been receiving the “Service Trailer Brake System” error intermittently. The only information I have been have to find around this is a defective wiring harnesses between two modules. This defect is not due to wear/tear and has been reported as a defective part on multiple GMC models. When this service error pops up it is distracting and very unsafe for driving as well as dangerous when towing as the driver has no idea of the trailer brake system is functioning properly..

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-16
  • VIN: 1gtg6cen2j1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Vehicle has less than 25,000 miles. Over the last 3 days, after vehicle is put in park and turned off, the key will not always rotate back to the 'off' position, and can not be removed from the ignition. This has happened at least 6 times over the last 3 days. Managed to remove key by turning vehicle back on and driving back and forth a few inches, then trying again. Took multiple tries on some occasions. With less than 25,000 miles, nothing should be worn out... Safety concerns:The possibility that the key will completely fail to be removable, meaning that if the vehicle must be left unattended, it must be left unlocked and in a condition that it could be started and stolen or driven by a curious child. The possibility that see-sawing back and forth in a parking spot could lead to an accident. The possibility that the vehicle will have to be towed. The possibility of being stranded outside- all my keys are on one ring, if I can't get them out of the ignition, how would I open the door to the house? The problem has not yet been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service station. I will be calling to schedule an appointment. The vehicle or component has not been inspected as of yet. No warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms happened prior to the first incident. When I returned home and had an opportunity, I did an internet search and discovered that the problem is a known issue, and has been reported by others.

Negative 2018 Gmc Canyon car reviews

  1. Bruce Lesch 2025-03-26

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 GMC Canyon Diesel. I've had it for almost 18 months now and have driven almost 32,000 miles. Overall, I really love the truck, especially the diesel engine and the great MPG. It's been a reliable daily driver and I've had no issues hauling a trailer or boat. Of course, like any vehicle, there have been a few minor issues, but they were all fixed under warranty. The only thing that really bothered me was the low height of the front air dam, which made it difficult to go over parking curbs. I'm 6'1

  2. Justen Ruecker 2025-01-29

This model often experiences oil leaks at 40,000 miles due to poorly designed and constructed oil coolant lines. Although GM has not taken responsibility for the issue, it is a common problem that should be addressed to ensure reliability. It is worth considering if there are any other potential issues with this vehicle. Additionally, a new radiator was required at 50,000 miles due to a coolant leak.

  3. Erin Lebsack 2024-11-01

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you recently purchased a truck. I wanted to check in and see how you're liking it so far. If you have any feedback, I'm all ears! :)

  4. Josiah Nader 2024-10-03

Based on my personal experience, I would suggest considering other options before purchasing this vehicle. While I have owned my 2017 Canyon Denali for three years and it has under 40,000 miles on it, I have encountered an issue with the shifter not recognizing when the vehicle is in park, making it difficult to remove the key from the ignition. Although I had to purchase a new shifter after the warranty expired, it still locks up intermittently, requiring me to play with the shifter until it recognizes that it is in park. I have noticed that there are many complaints online about this issue, which suggests that it is not an isolated occurrence. While I believe that a recall is necessary, GMC has not yet addressed the problem. Therefore, I am considering other options for my next truck, such as Ford.

  5. Landen Smith 2024-10-03

I purchased my 2018 All Terrain truck on a Friday evening, and unfortunately did not inspect it thoroughly due to the darkness. Upon further examination, I noticed that the door had paint scraped off from a previous collision, and both rear quarter panels had paint defects, with one having been repainted. Additionally, the truck experiences a terrible vibration at 80mph, and the transmission downshifts abruptly from 2nd into 1st. Despite these issues, I am confident in my decision to shop for a new truck.

Positive 2018 Gmc Canyon car reviews

  1. Adelbert Ritchie 2025-03-29

The headlamp switch and 4wd switch are located on the lower-left dash, but visibility is poor due to the steering wheel. To see the setting, you really have to move your head off the windshield and under the steering wheel. When getting in and out of the truck, it's easy to bump the switches with your knee without realizing it, so it's important to check every time. I've been leasing this truck for 6 weeks now and have noticed that the 4wd seems to drag when first moving. I've accidentally left it on Auto or 4wd High before and had to stop completely to reset it. The same thing has happened with the headlight lamp switch, where I thought I was in auto but was actually in full headlamp mode. As for gas mileage, the best average I've gotten is 16.6, but between 0-40 miles/hour, you're lucky to get 8-12 miles/gallon. The truck is rated for 17 City - 21 Highway, and I've found that on the highway, I can get 18-20 miles/gallon if I play lightly on the gas pedal, with slow acceleration and coasting when reaching top speed. However, you really have to play with the gas pedal to get the most out of it. The transmission shifting from 0-20 miles/hour is not smooth, and you have to barely touch the gas pedal to get a smooth shift. Otherwise, the truck revs from 1500/2000rpm to 3500 and quickly drops back to 1000 rpm, causing the truck to jerk during that shift. My old 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trak was much smoother in this regard. Lastly, I purchased a bed extender and double fold tonneau cover, but the cover hold downs have a poor design and are very tough to clamp on the brackets. You have to have them dead aligned, and if you open the cover and fold it, the hold downs fold in and slide out of position. I took nail polish to mark the correct spot, but I still sometimes miss. I can see the plastic and extended screw mechanism breaking. With the bed extender, the hold downs are behind the side bars of the bed extender, making it difficult to access. Even the service manager didn't know how to use the hold downs. The bed extender is tethered into the tailgate latches, but it feels cheap and won't last long. I wish Ford made a truck this size again. It's a shame that I couldn't find a link on the GMC site to leave my review.I completely understand your frustration with the Ranger being too small and the F150 being too big and not as smooth a ride as the Sport Trak or the Canyon. It would be great if the Sport Trak could make a comeback!

There are a couple of issues with the build quality and shortcuts taken with lighting. The A/C system uses the new R 1234yf refrigerant, which has resulted in a noisy A/C compressor due to the elevated density of the refrigerant. This was also a problem with the Cadillac XTS. While this is a distraction from the quietness accolades given for the cabin noise, it's important to note that the cabin is generally quiet and the truck handles well, making it a pleasure to drive. However, it's worth mentioning that GM could have improved the truck by using LED lights, which would have put them over the top when compared to Nissan and Toyota. Additionally, the 4WD button is in a poor location on the left side below the steering wheel and can't be easily seen by the driver. Overall, I would still buy this truck again given the options.

Your 2017 GMC CANYON SLT 4x4 sounds like an amazing truck! It's great to hear that you had no problems with it and that it provided comfortable long trips with decent gas mileage. The next owner is sure to be very happy with their purchase!

I was a bit disappointed with my Denali truck as it did not come with some features that I expected to be standard, such as front parking sensors, homelink, cross traffic sensors, power mirrors, signal indicators in mirrors, and running boards. However, I found that the Canyon model one step down had these options available and was more affordable. Despite this, I still really like the truck. It has a good suspension, steering response, and plenty of power. The front collision avoidance system could use some improvement, but overall it's a great ride. Although, I do wish it had a better growl. It's important to note that my 2017 Infinity QX 80 safety devices are more advanced than those in the Denali truck.

I recently switched from a Lexus GX470 to this truck because I was looking for something with power and off-road capability, but not too big. I have the diesel version All Terrain, which is absolutely amazing! Even though 90% of my driving is on the highway, my grown-up kids can still fit comfortably in the back. The truck drives great on the highway and it's hard to keep it under 130 KM/H. It also has the gas mileage of a Civic and is as quiet as my Lexus at highway speeds. The high bed sides, along with the diamondback tonneau, make it perfect for carrying things to the cottage. I'm not sure about its durability yet, but I had my Lexus for 15 years and 475,000 Km, so I'm hopeful that this truck will last just as long!
