2016 Gmc Canyon problems

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2016 Gmc Canyon problems

Based on complaints from owners of the GMC Canyon 2016, several common problems have been reported:

  • Torque Converter Failure: Another common problem is the failure of the torque converter, often accompanied by shuddering, especially at low speeds. The severity of vibrations tends to increase over time, potentially leading to power steering issues. Once the torque converter starts failing, replacement is usually necessary as repairs are not effective.
  • Power Steering Problems: The power steering system in the GMC Canyon 2016 has been reported to have intermittent issues or complete failure. When the power steering fails, there might be minimal warning signs, posing a safety concern for drivers. Addressing power steering problems promptly is crucial to ensure safe driving conditions.
  • Airbag Recalls: Recalls have been issued for the 2016 GMC Canyon due to airbag deployment issues in high-speed crashes. Improper inflation of the driver's frontal airbag during second-stage deployment poses a risk of injury to occupants. Owners were advised to contact Chevrolet or GMC customer service for a free replacement of the driver's frontal airbag module.
  • Console Compartment Latch Failure: Another recall involved the console compartment lid latch assembly, which could fail to keep the compartment door closed in a crash. This issue violates safety standards and increases the risk of injury to occupants if the contents stored in the console become projectiles during a collision. Owners were offered a free replacement of the console compartment door latch assembly to address this safety concern.

These reported problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise with the GMC Canyon 2016 to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
  • VIN: 1GTG5DE38G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I bought my 2016 GMC Canyon back in 2018 with 40k miles on it. After couple of months, I noticed that when traveling at approx 70MPH front wheels are shaking violently. I did wheel alignment and other wheel check but still there. Lately, power steering stabilitrak keep showing up on my panel. Since it can’t be resetted, Im literally driving like arm wrestling in the middle of the road specially during parking. After many years of wondering of what the wheel vibration is causing, electronic Rack and Pinion issue was the result of diagnostic conducted by Schumacher Chevrolet here in West Palm Beach, FL. They quoted me 3K for the repair.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-22
  • VIN: 1GTG6CE3XG1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Electric power steering stops working and the power steering assist warning light is illuminated. Once the truck is restarted the problem goes away but will come back at some point while driving. This has happened multiple times at multiple speeds, the first time it happened I was going over 70 MPH. With no power steering it is nearly impossible to turn the steering wheel since I only have one hand available to use on the steering wheel. Had I not had a passenger with me to help turn the wheel I would have crashed. I took the truck to the dealer and they told me it was the same problem that the 2015's had had on a recall but my truck was a early 2016 so I was not part of the recall. The dealer was happy to fix it at a cost of $2916.27 My truck only has 27135 miles, but is to old for warranty coverage.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-27
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1GTG6DE37G1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: On [XXX] at approximately 5:30p, I was driving normal highway speed when I saw what I thought was exhaust trailing behind. There were NO dash warning lights, engine temperature showing normal range, car was performing normally. I pulled over to shoulder, turned off car, released the hood latch. My husband tried to open hood but it was too hot. We then realized it was smoke coming from under hood, not exhaust. Smoke began to come inside car through vents. I quickly exited the car, and within a minute the entire front end engine area was engulfed in flames. 911 was called, fire, police, highway patrol responded. Fortunately there was no injury to myself or husband. There was also concern of starting a brushfire risk here in SoCal, but it was all extinguished thoroughly. Truck was towed to Al’s Towing, 475 W Vermont Ave, Escondido CA 92025, ph 760-745-5933. A report has been filed with our insurance USAA, inspection by adjuster is pending. I also notified Temecula GMC, where I purchased vehicle from, of the incident. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
  • VIN: 1GTP6DE18G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Power steering failed twice during a turn on two separate drives, nearly causing an accident both times. A power steering warning was displayed on the dash. I was able to move the vehicle to the side of the road, and normal power steering function returned following a restart of the vehicle. It is my understanding that the 2015 model year was recalled for the same reason, and that the 2016 model year contains the exact same problematic part.

  • VIN: 1GTG6DE3XG1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I have been having the same problem many people have been having with the same vehicle type. I will be driving and this has happened 4 times now and once on the freeway! Were I am driving, and all of the sudden the power steering cuts out, and I get all the warning lights come on. I had to pull over, or find a spot to pull over and turn the vehicle off and turn back on. Now I see there was a recall for this issue on the 2015 canyons but not for the 2016, and this needs to be recalled there are going to be people dying if you do nothing, and GMC will have a class action suite and this regulatory agency shall have serious legal redress against you should you do nothing, even though you know there is a serious issue and that multiple complaints have been filed and GMC is well aware of this! I do smell legal redress coming for you and GMC...

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
  • VIN: 1GTG6CE33G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: While driving my 2016 GMC Canyon today May 1st, I am experiencing the following... power steering/stabilitrac control lights come on and loose power steering. sometimes it will reset after turning off the truck and restarting but this is happening more and more often which is a major safety issue when considering this occurs randomly at any given point while driving. I have experienced this issue in the past few years at all different mileages and then it doesn't happen for a long time but always ends up having the same issue. I have been doing research and found this exact same problem is why there was a recall on the 2015 GMC canyons referencing the steering torque sensor assembly and cover. I have also researched the cost to repair out of pocket and it quite expensive. This recall for the older models needs to be updated to include all 2016 models as there are many more complaints about this happening on 2016 models as well. just search google and there you go. I have already called GM and got nowhere. Extremely frustrated as this shouldn't be happening and i as the consumer should not be having to pay out of pocket for a manufacturer error they refuse acknowledge. Thank you,

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-18
  • VIN: 1GTG6DE36G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I have lost my power steering while driving over a dozen times in the previous month. Fortunately, it usually happens when I am not attempting to negotiate a turn. However, it did happen once when I was turning into a parking lot, but luckily it was at a low speed. I could not negotiate the turn without the power steering, so I stopped and turned the car off to reset it. I have found that if I stop, park and turn the car off, the power steering immediately resumes upon restarting the vehicle. In some cases, I have lost the power steering again within the next few minutes. Usually, the problem won't happen again for the remainder of the drive.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-21
  • VIN: 1GTG6DE39G1
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I have had this repeated issue since i purchased my 2016 GMC Canyon in 2020. The power steering goes out at different speeds with NO indication . The lights that appear on dash are power steering and stabilatrax. I have had the battery and all connectors replaced and now the rack and pinion that the sensor is in. These repairs have been very costly and this situation has been very dangerous as it happens without any warning. Just when i thought it was fixed with a new battery and cables it quit again in heavy traffic and i was almost hit by 2 vehicles. It has been in 3 different repair shops and now at a Chevrolet Dealership. They have ordered the parts twice and the 1st 1 came to them broken from the Factory, This part was recalled for all 2015 models, but not the 2016? Receiving broken parts even shows that there is an issue. I have read on some of your sites from others posting about their 2016 Colorado and Canyons having this same issue. Please look into this and try to help me if possible. I am beyond frustrated. Thank you very much

  • Summary: Without any notice the stabiltrak and service power steering message will come on while driving and the power steering will stop working. While researching it looks like this issue was resolved with a recall on the 2015 models which has the same components as the 2016 version. This is a life-threatening issue when you are driving on a busy road and have to make a turn or swerve to avoid an accident and it looks like many are online sharing the same concern and asking for a recall. This has happened 3 times in the past year and resets when you turn the vehicle off for a short time and start it back up,

Negative 2016 Gmc Canyon car reviews

  1. Cade Emmerich 2024-09-19

My truck has had some issues, such as leaking water into the cab and problems with the four-wheel drive not working properly. Unfortunately, it has been in the shop multiple times for these issues. However, I have found a solution to the moisture problem by using humidity control devices. I am hopeful that the current repair will finally fix the four-wheel drive issue. Overall, I have had some challenges with my truck, but I am optimistic that they will be resolved.

  2. Devante Corkery 2024-08-01

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my previous vehicle. I owned it for 5 years and recently traded it for a new Ranger. While I loved the size, ride, and utility of the vehicle, I did have some trouble with the transmission and accelerator. Despite taking it to the dealer several times, I was told that everything was in spec and that the issues were normal. However, I did find some helpful comments from others who had similar experiences. I just wanted to give you a heads up that the '15 and '16 model years may have some transmission issues. Overall, I still felt that the vehicle was solid after 5 years. Thanks for listening!

  3. Tavares Blanda 2024-06-18

I am sorry to report that my experience with the Duramax and my truck was not a positive one. I purchased a 2016 GMC Canyon with a certified warranty from a dealer, but unfortunately, the motor threw a rod at only 48K miles. While GM did replace the motor, I began experiencing weekly computer error codes and issues with the plugs under the hood. When I reached out to the GMC Midwest Regional Rep to discuss these issues, I was disappointed to hear that the regional manager was not customer-facing. After weeks of frustration, I finally received a call from an outside regional manager, but unfortunately, he was unwilling to extend my warranty to cover the computer issues. Despite this negative experience, I was initially drawn to the revamped Canyon and Colorado and had hoped to remain loyal to GM. I have to give them credit for catching my eye, but as Paul Harvey would say, that's not the whole story. When I travel, reliability is a must, and in my opinion, the Canyon's weak computer system is not ready for prime time and will not meet my expectations. Unfortunately, it took a hit and left me stranded in a foreign place. It's truly disappointing to have to say this, but if you're looking for reliability, I don't think you'll find it in this GM offering.

The truck is too high, making it difficult for me and my wife to reach the bottom of the bed without a stool. I had to add a receiver hitch and a 6Hi there! Have you considered buying a used 2012 Canyon? They tend to be a lot cheaper and come with 15

My 2016 GMC Canyon with 90k miles experienced a catastrophic transmission failure despite minimal towing (< 1,000 miles). However, after conducting thorough research, I have found that this Diesel drivetrain has received numerous complaints and negative reviews. The repair cost of $5,700 is necessary to address this issue with confidence.

Features are much better than those of competitors' vehicles. The V6 has enough power to get moving and haul loads.

This is the best truck I have ever driven! It's exceptionally quiet, has plenty of power, and handles well in all weather conditions. Although, the transmission can't decide what gear it wants to be in when I make a turn and very slowly accelerate, which causes a slight hesitation. But all things considered, I still give it 5 stars!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2016 SLE w/ All Terrain. I'm a little over 1,000 miles in and I must say, I'm really enjoying the truck! The remote start is awesome, although I am overusing it a bit so it did ding the gas mileage. Overall, I'm getting around 19 miles per gallon, but on highway only trips it gets around 21/22. I think the All Terrain tires probably don't help with the gas mileage, but they sure do look great! I had experience with a Ford Ranger in the 90s and as expected, this is light years beyond. In some ways, it exceeds the interior of the Mercedes I traded in, although the Mercedes did have some bells and whistles this does not, such as dual zone climate control. While some reviewers do not like the infotainment, I think it works quite well and like it better than the Mercedes, and the voice activation is really easy to use. I did notice on some hilly highway driving it had to downshift to keep up at 65/70 mph, but otherwise have had no problem with power or acceleration. I'm coming from Xenon headlights versus the Halogen that comes standard here and I will probably look into brighter lights at some point. Overall, I love the look, comfort and capability of this truck and I'm very happy with the purchase. Thanks for listening to my experience!

Although the truck required two visits to the shop within the first five weeks, I am still satisfied with its overall performance. However, I must express my disappointment with the leather seats, which are not comfortable for long drives. In contrast, my previous truck, a 2016 model with cloth seats, allowed me to complete a 9100-mile trip in just three months. Unfortunately, after trading it in for a 4x4 and driving 2600 miles, I experienced leg circulation problems on several occasions. It is clear that these seats are not designed for extended periods of driving.

Good fuel mileage between 20 and 27. Great turning radius. Comfortable ride overall. I was involved in an accident where I was hit in the passenger front tire and flipped on its side. The car was totaled, but thankfully my son and I both walked away with minor injuries. Having Onstar was great.
