Common Dodge Grand caravan problems
The Dodge Grand Caravan, a popular vehicle for families and fleet operators, has faced numerous problems and recalls in recent years. One of the most significant issues is related to the transmission, with owners reporting harsh shifting and failures.
Brake problems are another prevalent issue, with premature wear and inadequate performance being reported. This not only compromises the vehicle's safety but also adds to the financial burden of owners. One owner mentioned that the brakes wear out faster than expected due to undersized components.
Electrical malfunctions are also a common problem, with malfunctioning power doors, erratic window behavior, and issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). For instance, one owner reported that their 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan has sliding doors that randomly shut on people, and a liftgate that has closed on their head. Such malfunctions pose significant safety risks and can result in expensive repairs.
Fuel system leaks have been a concern in some Vantage-modified 2016-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles, with recalls issued by the NHTSA due to deteriorating fuel pump gaskets. These leaks can pose a serious fire hazard, causing concern among owners.
Seat strikers may fail in crashes, compromising occupant safety during front and rear impact crashes. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to weld failures on the outboard rear seat strikers and front outboard seat strikers in 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles.
Insufficient coating on rear brake caliper pistons in 2018-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles can reduce rear brake performance, increasing the risk of accidents. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to this defect.
The 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan has also faced consumer complaints, including a cracked torque converter in the transmission, which can cause slipping and issues with gear shifting. Dodge has been aware of this issue but has not issued a recall, instead manufacturing a repair kit to fix the fracture. If a vehicle did not receive these needed repairs, owners may face expensive repair bills.
The stock headlights on the Dodge Grand Caravan are noticeably dimmer than a standard vehicle headlight. Some consumers even complained that they were nearly useless. To remedy this, new, higher wattage bulbs will have to be put in the lights, and the regulator chip that was the cause of the recall needs to be replaced. Due to the faulty regulator chip, there are several electrical issues with the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan. The power locks regularly fail, which can be inconvenient, but the bigger issue is that the electrical problems can cause stalling. Some consumers even reported that stalling has happened at highway speeds, which can be incredibly dangerous.
In summary, the Dodge Grand Caravan has faced numerous problems and recalls, particularly related to the transmission, brakes, electrical systems, and fuel system leaks. These issues can lead to costly repairs, safety hazards, and inconvenience for owners.

Now this is happening more frequently. It is the exact same issue listed under recall L25 “the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Vehicle year: 2013
I purchased a 2013 Grand Caravan SXT with about 10,000 miles on it. In my opinion, any minivan without some version of Stow&Go is not worth considering. I frequently fold down the second row seats and I wouldn't want to have to remove them to free up space. This would leave me unable to haul passengers in that area. On the plus side, the car has great power and good gas mileage. I get 27 miles per gallon at 70-75 mph (although town mileage is not great). The ride is quiet and smooth, and it was much less expensive to buy than a Honda or Toyota. However, there are a few things I dislike. The 6-speed transmission is okay, but not as smooth or predictable as it could be. The driver's seat needs more rearward travel as legroom is limited. Despite these issues, I still love the car. At 60,000 miles, I did have some problems with the transmission and rear shocks. The dealer replaced the shocks twice at no cost to me, and the transmission was rebuilt once. Although it shifts decently now, it's still not great and I hope to have it reprogrammed again soon. As of August 2016, I have 69,000 miles on the car and I would absolutely love it if it weren't for the transmission. It's a real pain and I'll probably have to pay to have it reprogrammed every 15-20K miles. However, the car has been very dependable and inexpensive to maintain. I finally cured the rear shock noise by installing Monroe shocks at my own expense after the warranty ended. To date, the only out of pocket repair cost has been for one set of tires and oil changes. Although I am still not satisfied with the transmission behavior, it has remained reasonably good (maybe 6 on a 1-10 scale) after the last reprogramming just before the warranty ended. At 103,000 miles, just out of warranty, I did experience a couple of issues. One was a failed oxygen sensor, which is not unusual at this mileage. The other was a door lock actuator for one of the sliding doors, which still works to lock/unlock that door (usually; it has stuck a couple of times such that the door won't unlock), but makes a buzzing or grinding noise that is annoying. Unfortunately, the cost to fix is $1000. However, after checking the cost of the part and observing the difficulty of the fix via YouTube, I realized that it was not as crazy as I initially thought. The body remains tight and rattle-free, and the interior is holding up well.

If you have kids, a minivan is a must. I chose this van because I think other minivans are made for small people. However, being 6'5, this van fits me great. My son loves it too, and even when I have my seat adjusted, he still has plenty of room.

I'm on my fifth minivan now and I have to say, they've come a long way since the old days. I opted for the AVP with some upgrades and just got back from a long trip where I got an impressive 20 mpg in the city and 29.5 mpg on the highway, with 24.7 mpg in mixed situations. What's even more impressive is that after 60000 miles, I haven't had a single mechanical issue. It's amazing that such a big vehicle can get such great gas mileage on the highway. The only thing I wish is that it didn't ride quite so much like a bus. Unfortunately, it doesn't have much resale value, but I don't understand why such a high-quality vehicle is subject to such disdain. Personally, I love it. I use the stow and go seats in different positions every day and find the handling to be great. The cab forward design makes it easy to see the road and park, and even though the ride can be a little bouncy, it's not too bothersome. The base seats are surprisingly comfortable and I find it much easier to see the road at night than in a sedan. Overall, it's the best value in a vehicle, period. My only complaint is that the transmission tends to shift out and then back down in the hills.

This vehicle has been a reliable companion for the past 20 years, and it's still going strong! Since I live only 10 minutes away from work, the mileage has been kept low, and it currently has 120,000 miles on it. The V-6 engine still runs great and provides plenty of pep. The gas mileage averages around 14 MPG. I've owned it for 13 years and have never had any issues with the engine or transmission. The power windows and front seat still work perfectly. Unfortunately, the speaker wires for the radio have become disconnected. The only major problem I had was when one of the transaxles broke. Additionally, the roof and hood paint peeled, which was a common issue for this year's model. Despite this, the interior has held up fine, except for the ceiling covering, which has come loose and hangs down over the front seats and along the sliding door.

Great vehicle! It's amazing how little maintenance it needs. With only two fluid changes and one water pump change, it still manages to get 24 MPG on the highway and 21 around town (3.3/FWD). Plus, it only needs a quart of oil every 3K miles.

This car has been a source of frustration since day one. However, it's important to note that there are some known issues with the tensioner and the Transaxle Control Module, which have been addressed in Technical Service Bulletins. Despite these issues, I have found that the removable seats are sturdy and the car handles well. Overall, while there have been some challenges, I believe that with proper maintenance and attention to known issues, this car can still be a reliable and enjoyable vehicle.

Although I invested a significant amount of money into this vehicle, I experienced several issues within a short period of time. Despite replacing multiple parts, including 2 ECM units, 2 alternators, EGL valve, battery, brake pads, and starter, I still encountered problems. In my personal experience, this has been the least satisfactory Dodge product I have owned. However, I understand that others may have had different experiences with this model.

It's clear that you had high hopes when you bought this van, but unfortunately, it seems like you've had a lot of problems with it. It's frustrating when things keep popping up, especially when it's a family vehicle that you rely on. It sounds like you've had to deal with a lot of issues, from the catalytic converter to the air conditioner and the front doors. And now, with the white smoke and oil coming from the tailpipe, it's understandable that you're feeling concerned. I hope that you're able to get to the bottom of this issue and find a solution soon. It's important to have a reliable vehicle for your family, and I'm sure you'll be able to find one that meets your needs.
Sylvester Schmidt 2025-02-16
Vehicle year: 2019
This van is a quiet, powerful, and massive storage vehicle that really eats up the miles. The console storage has multiple compartments that are great for keeping your belongings organized. The navigation system is easy to use and non-intrusive, which I loved on an Italian Jeep too. However, the USB charging is extremely slow and the iPhone audio runs through Bluetooth instead of the USB. The handsfree Bluetooth phone connection has a voice-driven interface that can be difficult to use and potentially dangerous. The second-row floor storage is great with or without the seats, but it does require the front seats to be moved all the way up. Overall, I think rental car fleets should keep these vans forever!

Hi there, we've had a bit of trouble with our SE model van. Unfortunately, we've had to take it in for repairs a few times now, including a recent issue where the engine light came on and it wouldn't shift into second gear. We've noticed that a few other SE vans are also being repaired for similar issues, including one with only 38 miles on it. We've owned the vehicle for 5 months now, but have only been able to drive it for a total of 2 months, not consecutively. The dealership has offered to put in one more transmission before considering a refund. As a family that has traditionally only bought Dodge vehicles, we're a bit disappointed with this experience. Thanks for listening.
