Common Dodge Grand caravan problems
The Dodge Grand Caravan, a popular vehicle for families and fleet operators, has faced numerous problems and recalls in recent years. One of the most significant issues is related to the transmission, with owners reporting harsh shifting and failures.
Brake problems are another prevalent issue, with premature wear and inadequate performance being reported. This not only compromises the vehicle's safety but also adds to the financial burden of owners. One owner mentioned that the brakes wear out faster than expected due to undersized components.
Electrical malfunctions are also a common problem, with malfunctioning power doors, erratic window behavior, and issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). For instance, one owner reported that their 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan has sliding doors that randomly shut on people, and a liftgate that has closed on their head. Such malfunctions pose significant safety risks and can result in expensive repairs.
Fuel system leaks have been a concern in some Vantage-modified 2016-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles, with recalls issued by the NHTSA due to deteriorating fuel pump gaskets. These leaks can pose a serious fire hazard, causing concern among owners.
Seat strikers may fail in crashes, compromising occupant safety during front and rear impact crashes. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to weld failures on the outboard rear seat strikers and front outboard seat strikers in 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles.
Insufficient coating on rear brake caliper pistons in 2018-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles can reduce rear brake performance, increasing the risk of accidents. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to this defect.
The 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan has also faced consumer complaints, including a cracked torque converter in the transmission, which can cause slipping and issues with gear shifting. Dodge has been aware of this issue but has not issued a recall, instead manufacturing a repair kit to fix the fracture. If a vehicle did not receive these needed repairs, owners may face expensive repair bills.
The stock headlights on the Dodge Grand Caravan are noticeably dimmer than a standard vehicle headlight. Some consumers even complained that they were nearly useless. To remedy this, new, higher wattage bulbs will have to be put in the lights, and the regulator chip that was the cause of the recall needs to be replaced. Due to the faulty regulator chip, there are several electrical issues with the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan. The power locks regularly fail, which can be inconvenient, but the bigger issue is that the electrical problems can cause stalling. Some consumers even reported that stalling has happened at highway speeds, which can be incredibly dangerous.
In summary, the Dodge Grand Caravan has faced numerous problems and recalls, particularly related to the transmission, brakes, electrical systems, and fuel system leaks. These issues can lead to costly repairs, safety hazards, and inconvenience for owners.

The first time this occurred we were driving 55mph on the highway and had to safely steer off of three lanes of traffic with our kids in the backseat, at the time we thought it was a fluke. Now this is happening more frequently. It is the exact same issue listed under recall L25 “the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.”

We had a great experience with our 1997 GC, which only needed an O2 sensor replacement despite having over 150k miles on it. However, we couldn't rely on it for longer trips. After renting a 2011 GC multiple times, we became attached to it and decided to look for one to purchase. Thanks to a helpful rep at a Dodge dealer, we found a 2011 GC Crew that was loaded with features and had an amazing price, much lower than the MSRP of $30k. The 300-mile ride home was a pleasure, with good mileage, smooth handling, and quiet operation. The acceleration, braking, and shifting were all smooth and responsive, without any jerking or clunking. I absolutely love my new car and can't wait to plan a trip just to drive it!

I bought this van brand new with only 13 miles on it. It has been a reliable vehicle for me, with no transmission issues ever. I have taken good care of it by replacing the fluid and filter twice, and changing the engine oil every 3k miles. I have also replaced the shocks, struts, rack and pinion, all the engine gaskets except for the head gaskets, power steering pump, one ABS sensor, one rear wheel bearing, and have done regular brake jobs. Despite having over 270,000 miles on it, it is still going strong and only uses maybe a quart of oil between changes.

Repetitive problem with inside rear view mirror coming loose. The battery life averages around 2 years. The car still rides and handles exceptionally well, even after eight years. It retains its stylish looks. You mentioned that you bought a 2005 for the 'sto & go seating' option.

Vehicle year: 2000
Your family has owned this car for 10 years now, and it's still going strong. The original engine and transmission are rock solid and perform well. The only problems you've ever had were a leaky radiator hose, a bad spark plug wire, and a bad idler. Once the idler and spark plug wires were replaced, it ran like new again! The power steering is very powerful and has a lot of boost. It's very easy to steer, and handles well considering its size. The leaf springs in the rear make loading over a ton no problem, and the engine can haul it adequately. You were able to fit all of your college stuff in there with room for three adults left. The engine made it 350 miles to your dorm and back, as well as a few very long trips (over 600 miles).

Vehicle year: 2000
With two kids and frequent visits from family in Europe, we found the 2000 SE with 75K miles and V6 3.3 engine to be spacious and comfortable. While it is an American made car, we still appreciated its quality. However, we recommend purchasing an extended warranty as we experienced issues with the bord computer and window power switch. Additionally, the brakes could be improved, especially considering it is a family car. Although the mileage in the city is not ideal, it performs well on the highway. Overall, it's a great vehicle for long rides with a big family. Just remember to drive carefully and be mindful of the brakes.

Despite having taken my car to the shop five times for a total of 42 days due to a leak in the sunroof, Chrysler has refused to take responsibility for the issue, claiming that I have not properly maintained the drainage system. However, the new design of the sunroof allows not only water but also dirt, pollen, and tree sap to enter, which quickly clogs the drains. This has resulted in water accumulating in my center console, with the last incident occurring after only 52 days. It is worth noting that my 2005 Chrysler Pacifica with a sunroof, parked in the same driveway as my current car, has never had any issues with leaking. It is clear that the issue lies with the poor design of the sunroof, and I urge Chrysler to take responsibility for their faulty product.

We bought our Dodge Grand Caravan in 11/04 and were initially thrilled with all of its features, especially the 6-disc DVD and stow n go. However, after the first year of ownership, we encountered a number of issues and unfortunately, Chrysler is purchasing our van back due to the lemon laws. We had to replace several parts, including tie rods, sway bars, and seats (due to a broken cable), and there was also a leak in the AC which had to be replaced due to a recall. As a result, we are now considering the Sienna. While it may be more expensive, we believe it will be worth it to avoid spending so much time at the service center.

Vehicle year: 2008
I purchased a 2008 Grand Caravan, but unfortunately, I have experienced some electrical issues with the vehicle. These problems have resulted in costly repairs and towing charges. Some of the issues I have encountered include the horn blowing in the middle of the night, being locked out of the vehicle, windshield wipers turning on for no reason, windows going up and down when the vehicle is parked, the radio changing stations for no reason, lights blinking on and off while parked, and now the ignition system has failed. I was informed by the dealer that the key may be the issue and it will need to be towed in for a system diagnosis. While the cost of a new key and diagnosis is $240 and $90 respectively, there may be additional costs for an entire ignition system and a $90 tow charge. Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful that the vehicle will become more reliable in the future.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2003 Sport Grand Caravan that I bought from an auto dealer in the winter of 2006 with 139000km on it. To prepare for the winter, I put in a new battery before driving it off the lot. Since then, I've put on 50500km and have only had to replace a few parts, including the brake pads, rotor disc, headlamp bulb, wiper blades, and a set of spark plugs. While I have noticed some shuddering in 1st and 2nd gear, it's not too frequent. Additionally, the signal light handle doesn't turn back. Overall, I think this is a reliable car that can last a long time if you take good care of it. Thanks for reading!

Congratulations on your Caravan purchase! It's amazing how well it has held up over the years, with 156K on the odometer and still running okay. Although the 3.0 engine has burned oil since day one due to the leaking seals, it's manageable. The idler pulley may be worn out, but it's cheaper to replace the belt with the next smaller one to fend off squeaking. One of the resistors in the fan switch also went south at 130K, but you can still choose from the other 4 speeds. The 3-speed model of the transmission is rock solid, making it an overall great van for the daily abuse it takes.
