Common Dodge Grand caravan problems

The Dodge Grand Caravan, a popular vehicle for families and fleet operators, has faced numerous problems and recalls in recent years. One of the most significant issues is related to the transmission, with owners reporting harsh shifting and failures.

Brake problems are another prevalent issue, with premature wear and inadequate performance being reported. This not only compromises the vehicle's safety but also adds to the financial burden of owners. One owner mentioned that the brakes wear out faster than expected due to undersized components.

Electrical malfunctions are also a common problem, with malfunctioning power doors, erratic window behavior, and issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). For instance, one owner reported that their 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan has sliding doors that randomly shut on people, and a liftgate that has closed on their head. Such malfunctions pose significant safety risks and can result in expensive repairs.

Fuel system leaks have been a concern in some Vantage-modified 2016-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles, with recalls issued by the NHTSA due to deteriorating fuel pump gaskets. These leaks can pose a serious fire hazard, causing concern among owners.

Seat strikers may fail in crashes, compromising occupant safety during front and rear impact crashes. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to weld failures on the outboard rear seat strikers and front outboard seat strikers in 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles.

Insufficient coating on rear brake caliper pistons in 2018-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles can reduce rear brake performance, increasing the risk of accidents. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to this defect.

The 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan has also faced consumer complaints, including a cracked torque converter in the transmission, which can cause slipping and issues with gear shifting. Dodge has been aware of this issue but has not issued a recall, instead manufacturing a repair kit to fix the fracture. If a vehicle did not receive these needed repairs, owners may face expensive repair bills.

The stock headlights on the Dodge Grand Caravan are noticeably dimmer than a standard vehicle headlight. Some consumers even complained that they were nearly useless. To remedy this, new, higher wattage bulbs will have to be put in the lights, and the regulator chip that was the cause of the recall needs to be replaced. Due to the faulty regulator chip, there are several electrical issues with the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan. The power locks regularly fail, which can be inconvenient, but the bigger issue is that the electrical problems can cause stalling. Some consumers even reported that stalling has happened at highway speeds, which can be incredibly dangerous.

In summary, the Dodge Grand Caravan has faced numerous problems and recalls, particularly related to the transmission, brakes, electrical systems, and fuel system leaks. These issues can lead to costly repairs, safety hazards, and inconvenience for owners.

Latest negative Dodge Grand caravan car reviews

  1. Wilfred Pfannerstill 2025-05-12

    Vehicle year: 2010

I'm glad to hear that you're overall pleased with your vehicle. After driving 12k miles, you've shared some of your thoughts with us. It seems that the city driving mpg is overstated, as you're averaging 14 mpg (12 mpg with A/C on). This is quite different from what Dodge claims, which is disappointing. You've also experienced a couple of well-documented issues with the vehicle. At 7k miles, the front rotors had to be machined, but it was taken care of quickly. At 11k miles, the front wheel bearings had to be replaced because the car sounded like a jet at speeds above 30 mph. Additionally, the rear windshield wipers were making a screeching sound, but the part was ordered and replaced. Lastly, the transmission seems to have trouble finding the right gear in stop-and-go traffic, mostly guessing wrong, but you can manually shift. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Although the ride and handling are nice, the mileage is poor and the vehicle is quite noisy. Unfortunately, this is the third and final Dodge product that I will be purchasing. In my experience, the air conditioning on all of them spews mold spores into the cabin and the drive trains are subpar. I have already traded this vehicle for a Montana EXT, which I find to be a much better value for the price.

Besides the transmission issue, the van would be great. I noticed that the transmission can be jumpy at low speeds and it also makes a whining noise after a 120 mile trip.

No serious problems so far! It's worth noting that there is a bit of wind noise near the upper doors' corner when it's windy, and when it's raining, water collects inside the cavity of the left side rear view mirror, which can make a 'running water' noise. However, I'm happy to report that I performed the M38 transmission update and it's shifting much better now. Of course, there's always room for improvement, but I did notice a small stain of oil sediment near the head gasket of the 4th cylinder, so I'll keep monitoring that. Additionally, there is a slight vibration on the steering wheel when braking moderately, but with heavy braking, there are no issues. I must say, the Michelin tires are a great match for this minivan, and it drives very well. It's also very quiet inside, and everything is in working order. On average, I'm getting 19.5 MPG in the city, and on the freeway, I got the best mileage of 24.3 MPG at 75mph. Overall, I'm very satisfied!

Major repairs starting at 5.5 years and 98k miles is not acceptable. It's frustrating when the AC dies, and there are front tie rod issues. I've also noticed a constant 'rattling' on every bump, but the service department never seems to find an issue. The serpentine belt has also been problematic. I was surprised at how quickly the vehicle rusted, especially since I've been driving Fords and haven't seen that. We've decided it's time for a change.

This van has it all! I completely disagree with those who say that the 3.3 is 'underpowered'. I mean, come on, are they trying to race in a minivan? Recently, I took my family camping in the mountains with the van loaded to the gills, and it performed just fine. Above all else, the Stow n' Go is the best seating option for my family. I absolutely love it! By the way, I was wondering if Edmunds plans on updating their review of this van with another one in the future. It seems a bit harsh to not recommend a product based on a sampling of just one. What do you think?

I have spent a significant amount of money on repairs, tows, rentals, and replacements for my Dodge all-wheel drive SUV. Unfortunately, the vehicle has had recurring issues with the serpentine belt, tensioner, and transmission, which have required multiple replacements and recalibrations. Additionally, the vehicle's low clearance has caused issues with the belt getting ripped off in winter conditions. The radio and windows have also experienced electrical problems. Despite these challenges, I am looking forward to upgrading to a Nissan SUV.

Handles well and really holds the road, especially with AWD. The gas mileage is impressive, getting 23-24 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg around town. I love the convenience of the electric doors and tailgate, which make loading and unloading a breeze. Even with the tailgate closed, I was able to carry 3 4x8 plywood sheets! The seats are also easy to remove, which is great for someone like me who has some arthritis. I actually sold a fully loaded Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer to buy this car and I don't regret it one bit, especially since I was only getting 12-14 mpg with the Expedition. The entry is also very easy. The only minor issue I have is the short throw of the regular beams at night. Overall, I'm very happy with this car!

At 11430 miles, the check engine light came on with P0128 indicating a stuck thermostat. The dealership initially diagnosed the issue as a computer problem, but upon further inspection, it was determined to be a thermostat issue. After updating the computer, I noticed some issues with the transmission shifting, particularly a 'thud' sound when shifting from first to second gear with the Econ button on, and hesitation when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. Despite my initial thought that the computer needed to re-learn parameters, the issues persisted after 3500 miles. I returned to the dealership for further assistance.

I have a 2015 Grand Caravan SXT with navigation. I really love the look of both the exterior and interior of the Dodge, which I find more appealing than those of Toyota or Honda. The ride and handling of my car are great, and I appreciate the dash and console, as well as the two glove compartments (the upper one even has a USB port inside). The fold-in-the-floor middle seats are a fantastic feature that Toyota and Honda should have included in their vans. The navigation system is simple and easy to use, and I also appreciate the Bluetooth feature. Unlike my sister's 2016 Honda CRV, which has a confusing navigation system and a car phone that always calls the wrong person, my Dodge's hard drive allows me to save my favorite songs or bands, and the radio will notify me if they are playing on a different station. It's also very easy for a tall person like me (I'm 6 foot 1) to get in and out of the van. The power sliding doors and tailgate, as well as the driver, passenger, and back seat heating and air conditioning controls, are all great features. The dash is laid out nicely, and the full console is a plus, although I do wish it had a bigger armrest. Overall, the van is very quiet and has minimal road noise. However, I do wish the air conditioning was colder and had a sync feature, so I wouldn't have to adjust each temperature control separately. The seats could also be a bit wider for larger people, and the little armrest is not very comfortable. I think a bigger armrest on the console, like the one in the new Kia, would be a great addition. The third-row back seat is uncomfortable, and I wish it could be adjusted for and aft, as well as for the seatback angle. Finally, all the information is displayed in one small digital gauge in the dash, which can be inconvenient when trying to check the mileage, trip odometer, miles left till empty, or any of the other functions. The car does not have power seats, blind spot monitoring, or backup sensors. To get the safety equipment, you had to get the RT model. However, my car does have a backup camera, which comes with the navigation. If you want all the safety gear, you have to buy the top of the line, which comes with leather, but I personally dislike leather. One last thing, why doesn't the car have auto headlights? It took me a while to learn to turn on and off my headlights. The daytime headlights are so bright that you can easily drive without headlights. The MPG is not the best, but my aunt's Honda Odyssey is not great either. On the bright side, my car has a 10-year warranty and an 8-year bumper-to-bumper warranty, plus tracking if my car is stolen. I paid 29,000 out the door for my van, and you cannot get a Honda or Toyota anywhere near that price with power doors or tailgate. The transmission does shift a lot, but besides that, I like the power of the car. For the price I paid, I feel like I got a really nice van. Is the Dodge as nice as the Honda or Toyota? For the most part, yes! Their seats are nicer and they do ride quieter, but they cannot match the versatility of the Dodge. This is the first time I have ever bought a Dodge. I have always bought new Toyotas. My last car was a 1998 Avalon that I had for 17 years, but I think that Toyotas are ugly today, same with the Hondas. Lastly, I bought a van and I have no kids. I love how my van can carry anything I want, and it's not a truck. Don't skip looking at minivans just because of what people think. Minivans are far more practical than an SUV, truck, or car. Do yourself a favor and test drive one. They ride like a car and can carry 7 people in comfort, for the most part. Plus, with the seats down, you can go shopping and bring home almost anything a truck can. The only issues I have had were the driver's side window power regulator, which went out twice. The Dodge dealership fixed the regulator in 2 hours. No cost to me as my car has a 10-year warranty. Just this last month, I heard a loud bang and couldn't figure out what caused it. Eventually, I noticed that my headrest had popped open. My headrests have a feature that deploys them like an airbag in case of an accident. I went online to check this out and it seems that many manufacturers that use this design have issues with the headrests going off while driving. Besides these two issues, my car is running like new. I really like my van and am very happy with my purchase. I change my oil every 3,000 miles and keep up with any maintenance, and so far, most of the cars I have bought last me a long time. As of 12-29-2018, I still have no problems besides the ones I described before. I still really like my minivan and would buy one again. In fact, if you have never owned a minivan, then do yourself a favor and buy one. I will never go back to a car, SUV, or truck. A minivan beats them all. As of 10-15-2023, 9 years later, there are still no major problems. Love my van!
