Common Dodge Grand caravan problems
The Dodge Grand Caravan, a popular vehicle for families and fleet operators, has faced numerous problems and recalls in recent years. One of the most significant issues is related to the transmission, with owners reporting harsh shifting and failures.
Brake problems are another prevalent issue, with premature wear and inadequate performance being reported. This not only compromises the vehicle's safety but also adds to the financial burden of owners. One owner mentioned that the brakes wear out faster than expected due to undersized components.
Electrical malfunctions are also a common problem, with malfunctioning power doors, erratic window behavior, and issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). For instance, one owner reported that their 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan has sliding doors that randomly shut on people, and a liftgate that has closed on their head. Such malfunctions pose significant safety risks and can result in expensive repairs.
Fuel system leaks have been a concern in some Vantage-modified 2016-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles, with recalls issued by the NHTSA due to deteriorating fuel pump gaskets. These leaks can pose a serious fire hazard, causing concern among owners.
Seat strikers may fail in crashes, compromising occupant safety during front and rear impact crashes. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to weld failures on the outboard rear seat strikers and front outboard seat strikers in 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles.
Insufficient coating on rear brake caliper pistons in 2018-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles can reduce rear brake performance, increasing the risk of accidents. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to this defect.
The 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan has also faced consumer complaints, including a cracked torque converter in the transmission, which can cause slipping and issues with gear shifting. Dodge has been aware of this issue but has not issued a recall, instead manufacturing a repair kit to fix the fracture. If a vehicle did not receive these needed repairs, owners may face expensive repair bills.
The stock headlights on the Dodge Grand Caravan are noticeably dimmer than a standard vehicle headlight. Some consumers even complained that they were nearly useless. To remedy this, new, higher wattage bulbs will have to be put in the lights, and the regulator chip that was the cause of the recall needs to be replaced. Due to the faulty regulator chip, there are several electrical issues with the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan. The power locks regularly fail, which can be inconvenient, but the bigger issue is that the electrical problems can cause stalling. Some consumers even reported that stalling has happened at highway speeds, which can be incredibly dangerous.
In summary, the Dodge Grand Caravan has faced numerous problems and recalls, particularly related to the transmission, brakes, electrical systems, and fuel system leaks. These issues can lead to costly repairs, safety hazards, and inconvenience for owners.

The first time this occurred we were driving 55mph on the highway and had to safely steer off of three lanes of traffic with our kids in the backseat, at the time we thought it was a fluke. Now this is happening more frequently. It is the exact same issue listed under recall L25 “the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.”

Edmund's criticizes the Grand Caravan as outdated, but come on, give me a break! When it was released, it was cutting edge and others are still trying to catch up. The game changer Stow n'Go? Absolutely! Why pay nearly twice as much for a Sienna or Odyssey (and Edmund's thinks you should)? We recently upgraded from a 2008 Town and Country to a 2019 Grand Caravan SXT and found the updates refreshing and intuitive. The SXT has almost a full 1/3 more horsepower, yet better gas mileage. Plus, it has beautiful leather seats, Bluetooth, auto sliding doors, remote start, and plenty of other features for a no-brainer low price. You know, you can't please everyone, but oh, how this pleases us!

I waited a whole year before posting this review. I bought this vehicle brand new in August 2012 and the transmission recall was spot on and fixed the problem. Although the satellite radio still doesn't work, this van is perfect in every other sense. I'm getting great gas mileage, comfort, storage, and hauling capabilities. It seems like there are some very picky people out there, but this van was way less expensive than the others I checked out before buying. The ride may seem a little stiff, but for what this van can do, it's definitely worth it. If you want a really smooth ride, you'll have to shell out 60k and get a Cadillac. In my opinion, this is a great vehicle for the money and I will definitely get another one. This is actually my 4th Dodge van and, God willing and the creek don't rise, I will get another one when the body changes.

undefinedIf you take a look at the reported defects and service visits on one of the online resources, you'll see that Dodge has made significant improvements in initial quality compared to earlier model years (2008, 2009). The maintenance requirements are also much lower compared to older vehicles. All you need to do is change the oil, tires, and brakes, and there's no more timing belt. The transmission is sealed and the first service is pushed out to 120,000 miles, with plugs at 100,000. Overall, this decreases the cost of driving. Everyone who rides in it comments on how nice it is, but that's the case with most new vehicles. It's a minivan, not a Porsche, so I set my expectations accordingly. It drives well for extended trips, has low road noise, and I think the front seats are the best I've ever seen in a vehicle. They are exceptionally comfortable. The transmission is a 6-speed, which is a dramatic difference from the older vehicles. I don't know how it rates compared to the Japanese or South Korean rivals because I didn't drive them, but it strikes me as a perfectly acceptable driving experience for a minivan. I own a Hyundai and a Chevy as other vehicles, so I don't have brand loyalty other than I buy mainly for value. The Dodge was $9,000 less than the nearest competitor that I could buy. Whatever flaws it may or may not have, they were easily overcome by that price difference. When it comes to resale value, it doesn't hold up as well as Honda or Toyota, but I'd focus on the cost to drive, not absolute resale value. Look at the price difference and consider sales tax, insurance, and financing costs in the equation. If you plan to turn a vehicle over every 3 years, then I'd do the math using data from current model vehicles that are on the market and compare buying one versus the other. If you buy and hold a vehicle, I don't see how resale value matters.- 1 Year Update - No change in the above review after 1-year & 13,000 miles of ownership. I've changed the oil and rotated the tires.nn- 1.5 Year UpdatenNo change in the above review. My wife has put a few beauty marks on it and we are at 57,000 miles now and have swapped out the original tires. I did a transmission service on it at 50,000 miles (only because it was cheap for me to swap fluid/filter - cost like $45) but it continues to be a great buy.nnUpdate 2022: No further changes to notate. I rented from Enterprice Burleson and was pleasantly surprised by the great gas mileage for the size of the vehicle. Although there was no GPS or backup camera, I had a spare and found the road to be smooth. The luggage space was good for our group of 6, but the last row seat was not easy to exit. Overall, it was a good experience.

I absolutely adore my 2012 GC Crew! Although it was a lease/repo/rental vehicle that was rushed from Texas to Alabama, I fell in love with it after only two days of driving. Admittedly, it had a few minor issues such as hesitating while backing up and jerking during shifting, but those were easily fixed. The power sliding doors were a bit sluggish and there was a missing piece on the passenger side vent, but those were also taken care of. It just needed a good detail cleaning, which I took care of myself. Unfortunately, it was discovered that the motor mounts were broken when I took it to the shop last week. However, everything else has been fixed and I should be getting it back this Monday. Although it's disappointing that a 2012 model would have broken motor mounts, I still love my van and can't wait to have it back. The manager even offered to put me in something else if I'm not completely satisfied, which is great customer service!

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read my review. Unfortunately, I have noticed that there have been no significant changes since my last review. I have been experiencing some issues with the transmission, which has been quite concerning. I reached out to corporate regarding this issue, and they mentioned that they extended my Powertrain warranty, but I have yet to receive any written confirmation. Additionally, I have noticed some faint rattling in the suspension, which I find quite unusual. When I took it to the dealership, a technician mentioned that this is a common issue with this vehicle, but I am not convinced that this is normal. I am quite disappointed with the overall performance of the vehicle and I am curious to know if anyone else has experienced similar issues. Thank you for your time.Hi there! I'm currently in touch with the corporate office of Dodge to try and gain a better understanding of this situation.

We went with a used Grand Voyager because we didn't want to make a big payment. Our trade and a 3-year loan resulted in a payment of only $116. At that price, occasional repairs wouldn't be a big deal. The van has been very reliable, with the exception of a problem with the AC system (which we still plan to fix or trade up in the spring). The average mileage is about 16, which I wish were higher.

I got this Pearl Water Blue SE with a two-tone interior in March 2010 as a work truck. It replaced a 2006 Caravan. Although Dodge made some improvements, they fell short in others. The van handles better thanks to bigger tires and minor suspension improvements. However, the 3.3L engine is not very powerful when coupled with the four-speed transmission. If I had a choice, I would've gone for the 3.8L. Once up to speed, it's reasonably stout and stable, and road noise is minimal. I absolutely love the Stow 'n Go and the additional storage places. However, the plastic on this car inside and out scratches/marks easily and is not as nice-looking as my old van, nor is it holding up as well.

Although this van has presented some challenges, I am confident in my ability to address them. I have had the transmission replaced twice, but I have taken steps to ensure that it will not happen again. The air conditioner is currently functioning at one speed, but I am working to improve its performance. The starter has been replaced three times, but I am confident that I have found a solution to this issue. While there have been some issues with gas leakage, I am taking steps to address this problem. Finally, I am addressing the issue of the cracked dash. I am confident that with my expertise, I can resolve these issues and continue to enjoy the benefits of this van.

I bought this vehicle used from a private party with 90k miles on it. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the engine stalling frequently and had to pay $1000 in repairs within the first 6 months. I also had to replace the A/C condenser and water pump. Four months ago, I noticed a brake fluid leak and had to rebuild the rear brakes, which cost me another $400. Last month, the vehicle stopped running again due to a burnt computer, distributor, and battery, which cost me an additional $800. The engine also leaks a quart of oil every week. I have spoken to other Caravan owners who have also experienced transmission problems, and my van had its transmission replaced just before I bought it. However, I have been lucky that the rebuild has held up. Overall, this has been a challenging vehicle to own.
