Common Dodge Grand caravan problems

The Dodge Grand Caravan, a popular vehicle for families and fleet operators, has faced numerous problems and recalls in recent years. One of the most significant issues is related to the transmission, with owners reporting harsh shifting and failures.

Brake problems are another prevalent issue, with premature wear and inadequate performance being reported. This not only compromises the vehicle's safety but also adds to the financial burden of owners. One owner mentioned that the brakes wear out faster than expected due to undersized components.

Electrical malfunctions are also a common problem, with malfunctioning power doors, erratic window behavior, and issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). For instance, one owner reported that their 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan has sliding doors that randomly shut on people, and a liftgate that has closed on their head. Such malfunctions pose significant safety risks and can result in expensive repairs.

Fuel system leaks have been a concern in some Vantage-modified 2016-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles, with recalls issued by the NHTSA due to deteriorating fuel pump gaskets. These leaks can pose a serious fire hazard, causing concern among owners.

Seat strikers may fail in crashes, compromising occupant safety during front and rear impact crashes. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to weld failures on the outboard rear seat strikers and front outboard seat strikers in 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles.

Insufficient coating on rear brake caliper pistons in 2018-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles can reduce rear brake performance, increasing the risk of accidents. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to this defect.

The 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan has also faced consumer complaints, including a cracked torque converter in the transmission, which can cause slipping and issues with gear shifting. Dodge has been aware of this issue but has not issued a recall, instead manufacturing a repair kit to fix the fracture. If a vehicle did not receive these needed repairs, owners may face expensive repair bills.

The stock headlights on the Dodge Grand Caravan are noticeably dimmer than a standard vehicle headlight. Some consumers even complained that they were nearly useless. To remedy this, new, higher wattage bulbs will have to be put in the lights, and the regulator chip that was the cause of the recall needs to be replaced. Due to the faulty regulator chip, there are several electrical issues with the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan. The power locks regularly fail, which can be inconvenient, but the bigger issue is that the electrical problems can cause stalling. Some consumers even reported that stalling has happened at highway speeds, which can be incredibly dangerous.

In summary, the Dodge Grand Caravan has faced numerous problems and recalls, particularly related to the transmission, brakes, electrical systems, and fuel system leaks. These issues can lead to costly repairs, safety hazards, and inconvenience for owners.

    Vehicle year: 2012

I purchased this vehicle new in July of 2012. I had previously owned a '99 Caravan Sport which was great, but unfortunately, this one did not meet my expectations. After another 60 days, I noticed a clattering/rubbing sound from the engine compartment at low speed, which increased and decreased in time with RPM's. The dealer service manager said it was

We purchased the car in 2009 and unfortunately experienced some rusting around the wheel wells about a year later. Although it was still under warranty, the issue persisted even after repairs were made. We have been in contact with the dealership and Chrysler to resolve the issue, but it has been a bit of a process. The only other minor issue we have experienced is some sticking with the driver side passenger door. Overall, the car has been mechanically reliable. However, due to the rust issue, we have decided to explore other options. We appreciate your understanding and hope to find a resolution soon.

This vehicle was leased for my family to drive. As a mechanic, I have had some challenges with it over the last 3 years. We have had to replace the brakes and tires a few times, and have had some issues with suspension components, tie rod ends, and ball joints. Unfortunately, the ABS system stopped working at 28,000 miles. However, the stow and go feature is great, it tows well, and is fairly fuel-efficient. While I personally don't enjoy driving this car, I would recommend that anyone considering purchasing it used should have it thoroughly inspected by a trusted mechanic.

The 1993 Grand Caravan is a great people, pet, and cargo hauler. It is comfortable, reliable, and economical. The Quad Captain Chairs are especially comfortable and keep younger occupants separated. While the engine may not be the quickest, it is a dependable workhorse that can get up and go in a pinch. Although the steering is a bit heavy, overall this vehicle is a great third car to have for muddy soccer days or when you need to pick up some mulch and carry some young kids and their friends. Consider getting a used one for ultimate functionality and utility.

A good van. I really liked it. It was roomy and comfortable. I had the Grand Caravan and it was amazing how much stuff I could load when I removed the seats. It was definitely better than renting a small van from Ryder. Although I did have a minor transmission problem at 80k, I was able to replace the seals for about $450. It seemed hard to stop, especially in wet weather. Looking back, I should have ordered ABS and saved myself many close calls. Unfortunately, the van was stolen and totaled, otherwise, I would never sell it.

We recently traded in our 2004 Toyota Sienna XLE with 125,000 miles for a Dodge Grand Caravan. We opted for the Caravan as it offered all the bells and whistles of a fully loaded '08-'09 model, unlike the '09 Sienna which had very few features. Living in Wisconsin, my wife was keen on a van with remote start and heated seats, which we couldn't afford with the Sienna. We are happy to report that we made a great decision and have not encountered any issues with our Caravan yet. It came certified through Dodge, so it still has warranty coverage. We were advised to choose a certified Caravan with remaining warranty due to some past issues, but we are proud to be Dodge Grand Caravan owners!

I was initially excited about the new van, but unfortunately, the first transmission failed at only 50k miles. The replacement transmission was also faulty right from the start. In addition, I had issues with squeaky seats, noisy struts, and the computer went out at 110k. The brakes were also a problem, as they didn't have enough stopping power due to poor design. I had to change the brake pads at least 7 times and replace the rotors 3 times in just 135k miles. Lastly, the clear coat on the paint started disintegrating last year. It seems that I wasn't the only one to experience this issue, as many late 90's Green models have the same problem.

It's great to hear that you have experience with Chrysler Vans before! I understand your concerns about the transmission (4-spd auto), which is known to be troublesome. However, it's wonderful to hear that you find the ride quality, design, and comfort to be top-notch. It sounds like you and your family really love your Caravan, which is fantastic! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I had a 2008 Grand Caravan SXT that I absolutely loved. It actually saved my life in a terrible accident. After that, I had a 2010 Journey which I also loved, but eventually decided to switch to a 2010 Sebring. However, I missed having a van and ended up purchasing a 2014 Grand Caravan SE with Rear Entertainment Package. While it's a nice van, I have to admit that I preferred my 2008 model. Unfortunately, I've already experienced an issue with the blower making a grinding noise, which is a bit disappointing. Additionally, I preferred the 3.8 engine in my previous van over the 3.6 I have now. If I could go back, I would definitely choose another SXT. Although, I must say that I do love the mygig radio and the fuel mileage is averaging at 24 MPG. If I were to purchase another van, I would definitely avoid the SE model to save a few dollars.

If you're not a fan of technology, or push buttons in particular, this van may not be for you. However, if you're open to it, you may just love it!
