Common Dodge Grand caravan problems

The Dodge Grand Caravan, a popular vehicle for families and fleet operators, has faced numerous problems and recalls in recent years. One of the most significant issues is related to the transmission, with owners reporting harsh shifting and failures.

Brake problems are another prevalent issue, with premature wear and inadequate performance being reported. This not only compromises the vehicle's safety but also adds to the financial burden of owners. One owner mentioned that the brakes wear out faster than expected due to undersized components.

Electrical malfunctions are also a common problem, with malfunctioning power doors, erratic window behavior, and issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). For instance, one owner reported that their 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan has sliding doors that randomly shut on people, and a liftgate that has closed on their head. Such malfunctions pose significant safety risks and can result in expensive repairs.

Fuel system leaks have been a concern in some Vantage-modified 2016-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles, with recalls issued by the NHTSA due to deteriorating fuel pump gaskets. These leaks can pose a serious fire hazard, causing concern among owners.

Seat strikers may fail in crashes, compromising occupant safety during front and rear impact crashes. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to weld failures on the outboard rear seat strikers and front outboard seat strikers in 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles.

Insufficient coating on rear brake caliper pistons in 2018-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles can reduce rear brake performance, increasing the risk of accidents. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to this defect.

The 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan has also faced consumer complaints, including a cracked torque converter in the transmission, which can cause slipping and issues with gear shifting. Dodge has been aware of this issue but has not issued a recall, instead manufacturing a repair kit to fix the fracture. If a vehicle did not receive these needed repairs, owners may face expensive repair bills.

The stock headlights on the Dodge Grand Caravan are noticeably dimmer than a standard vehicle headlight. Some consumers even complained that they were nearly useless. To remedy this, new, higher wattage bulbs will have to be put in the lights, and the regulator chip that was the cause of the recall needs to be replaced. Due to the faulty regulator chip, there are several electrical issues with the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan. The power locks regularly fail, which can be inconvenient, but the bigger issue is that the electrical problems can cause stalling. Some consumers even reported that stalling has happened at highway speeds, which can be incredibly dangerous.

In summary, the Dodge Grand Caravan has faced numerous problems and recalls, particularly related to the transmission, brakes, electrical systems, and fuel system leaks. These issues can lead to costly repairs, safety hazards, and inconvenience for owners.

Latest negative Dodge Grand caravan car reviews

  1. Reid Schuster 2025-04-20

    Vehicle year: 2012

Our van had some serious issues that made driving it a scary experience. It would randomly cut out and die, leaving us with no breaks, lights, gas, and the steering would lock up. This happened a few times while I was going 70 down the highway, which was really frightening. We took it in for repairs multiple times, but unfortunately, the problem persisted. On top of that, we also had the issue of the keys falling out of the ignition while we were driving. Even after replacing the battery, it would still go dead on a monthly basis. We eventually had to take it back to the dealership, which was a frustrating and expensive experience that put us in danger more than once.

I purchased this vehicle with 36,000 miles and have since put 8,000 more on it. Unfortunately, both automatic doors stopped working about a week apart, the lift gate won't stay open, and the power driver seat has stopped functioning. Additionally, I have noticed that the brakes are undersized for the weight of the vehicle and require replacement. While I experience a slight shudder and whine when turning, I do appreciate the convenience of the stow n go seats, although they can be a bit of a chore to stow. Unfortunately, the value of the vehicle has decreased significantly, making it difficult to trade in. Despite these issues, I remain hopeful that I can find a solution and continue to enjoy my vehicle.

Our 1994 Dodge Grand Caravan is a great vehicle that we can always rely on. Although the electrical gadgets on the van can be a bit finicky, our local mechanic is able to keep it in good shape with just a few repairs. We find it to be even better than our previous Nissan Quest, which was a bit of a headache. It's important to keep in mind that all vehicles require some amount of maintenance, so we find it amusing that some reviewers are surprised by this. Overall, we believe that this vehicle is a fantastic bargain for the level of service it provides.

I would not recommend the Dodge Grand Caravan to anyone. Unfortunately, my brand new Dodge Caravan has had several recalls and required new brakes, calipers, and rotors after only 8 months of driving. Additionally, it has a tendency to randomly shut off after starting and the keys seldom unlock the doors, requiring manual unlocking. It has been to the shop twice for this issue. Surprisingly, I put less time and money into my old 1970 Ford Maverick, which has just over 100,000 miles and is starting to experience transmission issues. I brought my Caravan in for warranty work once, but was then told that my muffler needed to be replaced for $900.00. I declined and sought a second opinion, which confirmed that the muffler was actually fine.

I strongly advise against purchasing a 12 DGC SXT certified used rental vehicle. In my experience, this vehicle has had numerous problems and recalls, resulting in significant maintenance costs and a loss of money when I sold it. For the safety of my family, I decided to switch to a different vehicle and have found that anything else is a better option. Personally, I have had much better experiences with Honda vehicles.

It's unfortunate that Dodge seems to be struggling with fixing the transmission problems in their vans. When my van hit 79,000 miles, the transmission, water pump, brake booster, and master cylinder all went out. Thankfully, I had purchased the extended warranty. I also want to warn everyone that this particular year of van does not have a Brake Shift Interlock, which means that anyone can shift it into gear while the motor is running without pushing on the brake. This is a very dangerous situation. Please be careful!

Last year, we rented this model for a trip that required lots of storage room for the trip home. We were instantly converted to a minivan household! Due to an unfortunate accident (not our fault) in November, it provided us with the opportunity to buy a new car. We didn’t even have to discuss it. We already knew what we wanted. I searched online for a 2017 model and bought it over the phone in less than an hour. When my husband’s workday ended, he dropped off our other car to have the brakes relined and got a lift from a friend straight to Landmark in Athens. He drove our new car home after signing the paperwork. The financing was great and the customer service was excellent! I am handicapped, which makes entering and exiting a car difficult. But because the Grand Caravan sits lower than our crossover, it’s much easier for me to get in and out. Plus, there is room for my wheelchair if needed. The power outlets allow me to use my medical equipment while in transit, so I can withstand longer road trips. There is so much storage space with all seats in position. If we stow all the seats, we can slide a queen-size mattress and box springs in the back with room left over! I love the separate temperature controls in the front and rear. The car rides like a dream, has the storage room of a pickup, and the V6 engine is powerful. We weren’t picky...this was the last 2017 model left on the lot, so we had no choice in the color of the van, carpet, or the rest of the interior. We would have liked a power package (seats, doors, tailgate), but otherwise, it’s fabulous. And have you ever heard of getting 25mpg on surface streets? We get 31mpg on the expressway, thanks to the economy fuel setting. We absolutely love the Dodge Grand Caravan! And our rapidly growing teenager finally has room for his super long legs! I can't say enough nice things about the car or Landmark Dodge. It was just a great experience all the way around.

In 1988, we purchased our first Mini Van, the Plymouth Grand Voyager. It was an excellent vehicle for taking our kids to college. After 13 years, we upgraded to a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan, which was perfect for transporting our grandchildren. At one point, we had four child safety seats in the van, and later, we used it to pick them up from school. Apart from regular maintenance, the van performed exceptionally well. When it was time to buy another van 14 years later, my granddaughter was upset to hear that we were replacing it. She had many happy memories of riding in the old van, listening to music and singing songs as we drove to and from school. In 2015, we purchased the Dodge Grand Caravan, and if we keep it for another 14 years, I doubt my kids will let me buy another van since I will be almost 90. We have owned Chrysler Corp. vans for 31 years, and they have given my wife and me many happy times with our children and now grandchildren. Chrysler should advertise them as the perfect vehicles for grandparents and grandchildren.

I bought my caravan 4 years ago with 116k miles. Since then, I have only had to replace a strut, an alternator, brakes, and tires. It still runs like new, with cold A/C, and it seems like it will easily pass the 300k mile mark. I am the second owner, and I have found that parts are cheap. As someone who works at LKQ, I can tell you that a low-mileage engine costs about $650, and a transmission costs $350.00. In my experience, other brands like Ford, Nissan, Toyota, and Chevy minivans tend to give up with a lot less miles than my caravan. At LKQ, we have noticed that the vast majority of caravans in our yards are there because they were totaled in a major wreck. On the other hand, other brands tend to break down and have very expensive parts. Let me know if you have any questions!

I have owned this van for five years and have recently experienced issues with the motor and transmission. Despite its high mileage of 177,000, I can confidently say that it has been a reliable vehicle overall. However, the motor has developed some lifter noise and the transmission struggles to shift into high gear in hot weather. Additionally, the gas gauge has never functioned properly.
