Common Dodge Grand caravan problems
The Dodge Grand Caravan, a popular vehicle for families and fleet operators, has faced numerous problems and recalls in recent years. One of the most significant issues is related to the transmission, with owners reporting harsh shifting and failures.
Brake problems are another prevalent issue, with premature wear and inadequate performance being reported. This not only compromises the vehicle's safety but also adds to the financial burden of owners. One owner mentioned that the brakes wear out faster than expected due to undersized components.
Electrical malfunctions are also a common problem, with malfunctioning power doors, erratic window behavior, and issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). For instance, one owner reported that their 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan has sliding doors that randomly shut on people, and a liftgate that has closed on their head. Such malfunctions pose significant safety risks and can result in expensive repairs.
Fuel system leaks have been a concern in some Vantage-modified 2016-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles, with recalls issued by the NHTSA due to deteriorating fuel pump gaskets. These leaks can pose a serious fire hazard, causing concern among owners.
Seat strikers may fail in crashes, compromising occupant safety during front and rear impact crashes. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to weld failures on the outboard rear seat strikers and front outboard seat strikers in 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles.
Insufficient coating on rear brake caliper pistons in 2018-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles can reduce rear brake performance, increasing the risk of accidents. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) issued a recall due to this defect.
The 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan has also faced consumer complaints, including a cracked torque converter in the transmission, which can cause slipping and issues with gear shifting. Dodge has been aware of this issue but has not issued a recall, instead manufacturing a repair kit to fix the fracture. If a vehicle did not receive these needed repairs, owners may face expensive repair bills.
The stock headlights on the Dodge Grand Caravan are noticeably dimmer than a standard vehicle headlight. Some consumers even complained that they were nearly useless. To remedy this, new, higher wattage bulbs will have to be put in the lights, and the regulator chip that was the cause of the recall needs to be replaced. Due to the faulty regulator chip, there are several electrical issues with the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan. The power locks regularly fail, which can be inconvenient, but the bigger issue is that the electrical problems can cause stalling. Some consumers even reported that stalling has happened at highway speeds, which can be incredibly dangerous.
In summary, the Dodge Grand Caravan has faced numerous problems and recalls, particularly related to the transmission, brakes, electrical systems, and fuel system leaks. These issues can lead to costly repairs, safety hazards, and inconvenience for owners.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG0DR

The first time this occurred we were driving 55mph on the highway and had to safely steer off of three lanes of traffic with our kids in the backseat, at the time we thought it was a fluke. Now this is happening more frequently. It is the exact same issue listed under recall L25 “the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.”

We just bought this van a week ago, so we can't speak to its reliability just yet. However, we are absolutely loving it so far! The van is incredibly spacious, and the captain chairs are a really nice touch. They're easy to move and remove, which is a huge plus. The 3.3 V6 engine provides plenty of power, even without towing anything behind it. We had originally considered purchasing a 2003 model, but we were able to find a 2002 model with only 12,000 miles on it for $10,000 less! The dual climate control is a really nice feature, as is the rear climate control. Overall, we're really happy with our purchase.

Congratulations on your 3rd Chrysler minivan! It's great to hear that this one is the best so far. The quad seating, video system, sound system, and driveability all sound fantastic. I understand that you had some initial concerns about the transmission, but it's reassuring to know that you've taken it to two separate dealerships and they've assured you that it's normal. It's interesting to hear that the transmission has a built-in memory to the primary driver's driving habits. Since your wife is now the primary driver, it's great to hear that you haven't noticed the 'shudder' effect as often. It's also great that you were able to purchase this van from a dealership that acquired it from a rental company. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

This is the best Caravan yet and we have 7 in the extended family. The only thing that would be nice is if the driver's seat would lower all the way to the floor. The workmanship is very nice and the vehicle is very tight. As a mechanic, I drove several of these before buying the 4.0. My daughter did too, so I recommend getting one while you can, folks!

Vehicle year: 2014
Starting with my 07, I had a lot of issues with it, but everything that I hated about it was fixed when I got my 2014 SE 30th anniversary edition with Blacktop option. The new generation (2008-2015) has fixed the rust problem, and the A/C is much better. I've had my new one since June of 2014 and have 10,000 miles on it, and it has been great. The only real problem is the transmission shifting, but I'm not sure if it's going to be a problem later on or if this is just how this transmission works. My dealer experience went from terrible to great by changing dealers. I went to a dealer near my home to have a warranty service, and it was awful (Hawk Forest Park IL). My independent mechanic suggested Larry Roesch in Elmhurst, and it was a much better experience. So far, the van has been very reliable, getting 19 mpg around town and 22-24 on the highway. The tires that came with the van are not very good (Yokohama Avid), so I bought Bridgestone BLIZZAK WS80 for winter with rims from Tire Rack. I can't emphasize this enough, GET SNOW TIRES! They are amazing and went through almost anything. Plus, I have the van with the black (fancy) wheels, and taking them off during the winter will save the finish from all the salt in the Midwest. I will certainly buy Michelin tires for my summer tires. The last two vans I had, I put Michelins on and got over 70,000 miles out of them. They also had decent traction in the snow. However, the Yokohama tires are cheap and have no traction in the snow and very little in the wet, making them a scary tire to have on a vehicle. At 40,000 miles, it was already time to replace them. Although the radio works with my iPhone Bluetooth and sounds decent, it could use an upgrade. The small readout for songs and clock is difficult to read. All in all, the van still looks new. I wash it every week and there is no rust or leaks. The brakes are still good and I have no complaints. It's a good value for a big van in the low to mid 20's. I have the base LE model with the blacktop package 30th year anniversary edition. As of the 2017 update, it is still very reliable. I have only had to do oil changes and replace the tires that came with the van with Michelins, which was a big improvement. The transmission still has shifting issues, but nothing major. My only real complaint is the subpar radio. It has Bluetooth and a USB, but that's about it. If you are listening to music from an iPod or flash drive via the USB, every time you shut the car off and start back up, it defaults to the radio, often way too loud. I wish it would stay in the USB mode. As of the 2018 update, I have owned this vehicle for 4 years and 81,000 miles. So far, it has been very reliable. The only issues so far have been the warning light for the rear hatch door staying on, which the dealer repaired out of warranty, but I had the extended warranty so it was covered. The transmission still shifts oddly at times, but the dealer checked it out and found nothing wrong. I feel it slips a bit. I do have to take it in next week because the A/C runs without me turning it on. I have replaced the tires with Michelins and still have the original brakes. If you're looking for an affordable people hauler, the Grand Caravan is a great option. Even with 98,000 miles, it's still very reliable with no issues at all. I make sure to get the oil changed every 3000-4000 miles with a synthetic blend, and the gas mileage is about the same - low to mid 20s on the highway and high teens around town. Although the rotors shake at high speed stops, my mechanic says the pads are fine and the rotors might be slightly warped. The original brakes and battery are still going strong. While the new Pacifica may have better technology, it's also much more expensive. For the money, I don't think you'll find anything that can handle this much cargo and people. I personally haul a lot of camera gear and twice a year tow my 18-foot speed boat to and from the marina. While I wouldn't tow it cross country, it's fine for short drives. The A/C seems to be working well now and the transmission is still in good condition. I plan to have the recommended maintenance done. Thank you for considering the Grand Caravan!

Firstly, I must admit that I am not a fan of minivans. I find their appearance unappealing and often wonder why manufacturers don't simply offer sliding doors or SUVs instead. However, I recently found myself in need of a family car with 3rd row seating. As a parent of two babies and two elementary age children, I discovered that SUVs are not always the most car seat friendly option when it comes to space. After looking through 10 SUVs, I was beginning to lose hope. Although they looked great on the outside, they lacked the features I needed on the inside. That's when my son suggested we check out the Dodge Grand Caravan. I was hesitant at first, but when he pulled up in a black DGC SXT fully loaded with auto start, power sliding doors, power rear door, and an incredible sound system with Bluetooth and hands-free calling, I was intrigued. The interior was even more impressive, with leather seating and suede accents that gave the vehicle a touch of masculinity that I appreciated. With 280HP under the hood, the Dodge Grand Caravan did not disappoint when it came to performance. It accelerated smoothly and handled like a dream, making me feel like I was driving my own car. I was able to keep my

I have the 4.0 liter engine which provides plenty of pep. Using auto-stick makes for spirited accelerations if needed. According to Edmunds, the rear seats are uncomfortable, but we find them much more comfortable than those in our previous vehicle, a Tahoe. The interior space is also much better organized than the Tahoe. Although the interior is typical Dodge with hard angler plastics, we bought this van because my wife and I needed a good kid hauler. So far, it is fitting the bill much better than our 07 Tahoe did. I am 6ft tall, and with a 2.5 year old sitting behind me, I can extend the seat all the way back with room to spare. We couldn't resist Dodge's 0% financing and employing pricing and other rebates, which allowed us to buy a $39k van for $30k.

Great vehicle for moving the family round, spacious & comfortable. Although, I have had some issues with reliability. I bought it with 60K on the speedo and now its at 104K. I have had a blown head gasket, the A/C fail, starter & water pump replaced. This excludes recalls on the radiator fan relay, fuel tank seals etc. However, I was fortunate to have a warranty which covered most of the above. If you are looking for something more reliable, you may want to consider other options.

Your AC unit runs great and heats up your space effectively. The only downside is that it has some typical Wisconsin rust.

I had a negative experience with Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep vehicles in the past, particularly with the Grand Caravan model. I encountered multiple issues, including having to replace the brakes three times and the transmission twice. Additionally, the Dodge sign fell off the hood, which was disappointing. I regret trading my 1998 Ford Windstar for the Grand Caravan. However, I understand that others may have had different experiences and preferences when it comes to vehicles.

Generally, this has been a great people hauler! In the 9 years I've had it, I've encountered a few problems such as transmission sensors and needing to replace the front rotors when the brakes needed new pads. Unfortunately, rust has been an issue, particularly with the passenger door, rear wheel wells, and body attachment points for the front suspension towers. I was surprised that they didn't use galvanized steel. Overall, though, I've been really happy with this vehicle!
