Common 2006 Dodge Grand caravan problems

The Dodge Grand Caravan 2006 is known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners. These issues include:

  • Underbody Coolant Leaks from Rear Heat/AC: Dodge Grand Caravan equipped with rear heat/ac often have coolant leaks coming from the underbody. This issue is common in areas with severe weather. Replacing the hoses can cost less than $200.
  • Shifting Harshness and Shuddering Issue: If your Grand Caravan is shuddering and experiencing harsh shifting, there is an issue with the automatic transmission. Check with your mechanic for recalls and service bulletins. The diagnosis for this problem can cost around $100, but replacing the transmission can be over $1500.
  • Key May Not Start Car or Release From Ignition: If your key won't start the car or release from the ignition, try replacing the key first. If that doesn't work, replace the lock cylinder and tumblers. Both options cost under $100.
  • Noise in Front Suspension: A rattling or clunking noise coming from the front suspension during low-speed turns may indicate worn sway bar bushings or sway bar end links. For this problem, the front struts are often replaced, with a cost ranging from $300 to $800, depending on whether one or both front struts are replaced.
  • Failed Transmission: Many Dodge Caravan drivers have reported their vans lurching, jerking, and producing grinding noises while the transmission disengages from the engine. The 2002 Caravan model was most notorious for having this issue.
  • Oil Leakage: Leakage in the oil filter adapter of the engine is a common problem for the Dodge Caravan, especially those of the 2006 model year. Sometimes, the oil leak originates from the gasket as well.
  • Failing Power Door Lock: Some Caravans have faulty keys and internal switches that cause the door lock to malfunction. Drivers have complained of hearing the beep that indicates the door is closed, only to find it unlocked upon their return later.
  • Popping Crankshaft Seal: Crankshaft seals prevent the oil tossed about by the rotating crankshaft from leaking out from the crankshaft. Unsurprisingly, 2006 Caravan drivers complained the most about this issue and had more oil leak problems than most other models.
  • Stalling Engine: The most common cause of stalling engines in the Caravan is a dirty throttle body. Drivers have complained of low engine idling while the engine is warming up, which often causes the oil light to illuminate.

It is important to note that these problems may not affect all Dodge Grand Caravan 2006 models, and some may not experience any of these issues. However, being aware of these common problems can help potential buyers make informed decisions and budget for potential repairs.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-27
  • VIN: 1D4GP24R06B
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My complaint involves more than one incident...it is the braking system on this vehicle. One incident was in Panama City Beach, Florida. My entire braking system locked up and I had numerous items replaced. Another more recent incident happened in Alabama. My left front brake heated up to the point it smelled like the vehicle was on fire. I have had several calipers and rotors replaced, numerous brake pads and not all of these repairs has been done by the same garage. I read complaints from others about the manufacturers brake system is too small for this style vehicle. They have experienced the same problems I have had. I bought this vehicle in 2015 and I have 155,000 miles on it. I have had to replace a water pump and spark plugs and wires, regular oil changes, etc. The only real problem I have had has been the brakes. I have spent almost $3,500 on brakes alone. I would think the braking system could be a very hazardous situation in the traffic of today. Please help me and others who are experiencing this problem with the braking systems on the 2006 Dodge Grand Caravans. Thank you.

THE MECHANIC CONTACTED THE SHOP THAT MADE THE INITIAL REPAIRS AND THEY DENIED NOT COMPLETING AN ALIGNMENT. I'VE HAD THIS VEHICLE FOR OVER 11 YEARS AND MY TIRES HAVE NEVER WORN THIS FAST AND IT DIDN'T HAPPEN UNTIL THIS REPAIR SHOP DID THE SUSPENSION WORK ON MY VEHICLE. THE SHOP NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED FOR UNSAFE MAINTENANCE PRACTICES. THEIR MAINTENANCE AND LACK OF SAFETY STANDARDS PUT THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY IN JEOPARDY, AND THEY'RE STILL IN DENIAL OF ANY WRONG DOING NOR ARE THEY WILLING TO PROVIDE ME SPECS OF THE ALIGNMENT THEY SAID THEY DID. PHOTOS ARE ATTACHED.

Negative 2006 Dodge Grand caravan car reviews

  1. Alvah Schumm 2024-10-15

My wife initially thought a van would be perfect for hauling the kids, but unfortunately, it hasn't lived up to our expectations. We've had to replace the tires too often, and the brakes are poorly designed and undersized, which has caused frequent replacements. We've also had to replace both power slide doors under warranty, and the passenger side motor has failed again. The transmission shifts very hard, and we had to replace the front suspension joints at only 45,000 miles. Additionally, the ABS control module fried at 47,000 miles. The heat is always on unless you turn the fans off, which is not ideal. The fuel economy is also less than impressive. We don't drive fast or push the vehicle hard, so it's disappointing.

  2. Christ Ernser 2024-09-05

Back in July of 2006, we made the mistake of buying a Dodge Grand Caravan. Unfortunately, it turned out to be terrible. The ride was rough, the seats were uncomfortable, visibility was awful, and we only got an average of about 13 mpg! Not good enough with these soaring gas prices. So after 13 months, we decided to trade it in for a Kia Rondo, which was a much better fit for us.

  3. Dan Reinger 2024-09-04

I traded my old van for the 2006 model because of the stow n go seats. Although I am leasing the van, I intend to keep it when the lease is up. However, I have had a few issues with the van. I have complained twice about an odor I get when I turn on the defrost or a/c, but I have been told there is nothing wrong. During the hottest time of the season, I had to wait for 2 months to have the back a/c unit replaced because the part was on back order. Additionally, I had to replace the motor on the passenger side window because it would not go up during a rain. Currently, the left passenger side door will not slide open when I press the button, so I have to manually open the door.

  4. Dante Koepp 2024-02-23

My vehicle was running perfectly until the engine started dying randomly. Sometimes it would start right back up, but other times it wouldn't start for days. I brought it to a shop that told me it needed a tune-up, but even after spending $500, the problem persisted. Next, they replaced the car's main computer, but that didn't solve the issue either. After spending around $1000, I decided to take it to the dealership, hoping they could help. They called me and said it was fixed, but unfortunately, the vehicle wouldn't start when I went to pick it up. I was disappointed to learn that shops don't give refunds on repairs that don't fix the problem. They suggested replacing the connector to the PCM (main computer) for another $240, but I declined as I felt they were just guessing. After doing some research, I found out that this problem is common with the Grand Caravan. The worst-case scenario is that the wiring harness shows no sign of damage, but the wires underneath are in fact damaged. A new wiring harness and installation would cost thousands of dollars. However, I didn't want to give up on my car just yet, so I parked it in a garage for a couple of years. Finally, I found a shop that specializes in fixing fleet Grand Caravans for medical and handicap transportation companies. They assured me they could fix it, and after spending $700, the car drove perfectly for a couple of days. Unfortunately, on the third day, it started dying again. At first, it would start right back up, but after several die-outs and restarts that day, it finally wouldn't start again. I called a cab, and about 5 minutes before it arrived, the car started. However, it was late at night and I didn't want to cancel the cab, only to have the car die 5 minutes later. Over the next few weeks, I tried to restart it a couple of times, but I didn't trust it enough to drive it. I didn't have time for any adventures either. A few days ago, I spent a couple of days trying to get it started, but unfortunately, I couldn't. I have now given it away as a parts car. If you find your caravan having this type of problem, it's best not to waste your money. I spent probably more than I've listed here, and even if I had gotten the car to be reliable again, it would have been worth $1200-1500. I wouldn't recommend buying a used caravan because of the possibility of this happening. Problems that can be fixed are tolerable, but Dodge, in general, is known for these types of mystery electrical problems that send vehicles to the junkyard. I highly doubt that I will ever buy another Dodge vehicle ever.

The car has only covered 65,000 km (40,000 mi) and uses 2 liters of oil between changes. The Chrysler service manager initially suggested that I was checking it wrong, but I was able to clarify the issue with him in a 5-minute conversation. He explained that it is common for a car to use a liter of oil every 1000 km. Although I have had to replace the headlight module and several front-end components, the car is still in good condition. While the seats are not the most comfortable and the suspension is a bit mushy, I have only had to do one brake job so far. Although it is not as fuel-efficient as my 1996 car, which gets 28 mpg, the 2006 car still gets a respectable 19 to 20 mpg. Overall, I am confident in the car's performance and reliability, and I am glad that I did not trade it in.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the car I recently purchased. After leaving Detroit, I drove all the way to Mexico without any issues that needed dealer attention. The car is incredibly spacious and comfortable, and I was pleasantly surprised by its pick-up when passing other vehicles. Plus, I got excellent gas mileage on the highway - sometimes exceeding 28 mpg on the flat road conditions in Texas and Arizona. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

This is our family's first van and Dodge vehicle. We absolutely love the ride, especially the comfort it provides on our road trips with our two kids and dog. We are planning to have another child, so we don't have to worry about space because there is plenty of it. We are truly impressed with the quality of this vehicle. The gas mileage is much better than our previous Explorer, which we traded for this car. We looked at other brands, but we felt that we were getting more for our money with Dodge. What made it even more attractive was the fact that it uses regular fuel and not premium like some of the other brands. We are confident that we made the right choice with this purchase.

It's great to hear that you're enjoying your vehicle! The Stow N Go seating is definitely a versatile feature, and it's wonderful to hear that you find it comfortable to ride in. With 24 MPG on trips and about 20 MPG, it sounds like you're getting some good fuel efficiency too. The captain chairs in the middle are a new addition for you, but it's great to hear that they're proving to be an asset. With the larger V6, you shouldn't have any trouble going up most hills in overdrive. It's also fantastic to hear that the rear air keeps the vehicle cool. The power doors and liftgate are a great option to have, even if you don't use them all the time. It's great that there's still plenty of room for cargo, even with the seats up. It's wonderful to hear that you haven't had any problems with the vehicle in the 8 months you've had it. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

As a parent of two young children, I find the van to be incredibly convenient for getting them in and out of their car seats. I am especially grateful for its safety features, as we were involved in a serious accident on the highway and the van kept us safe. However, after the warranty expired, we started experiencing some minor issues such as the wipers getting tripped up on each other during a storm (which our mechanic says is common), the EGR valve going, and the trip computer blipping out intermittently. I am unsure of what van to purchase next, but I am hopeful that we will find one that meets our needs.

The 1300 mile drive to Georgia and back was a pleasant driving experience. We found out first hand about its handling capability when maneuvering around road debris. We had to swerve around large chunks of tires a couple of times and didn't feel the least bit uncomfortable as far as feeling like we might roll over or lose control. In my book, it's excellent. We plan on several trips to Georgia and back and look forward to doing it in this vehicle.
