Common 1992 Dodge Grand caravan problems

The Dodge Grand Caravan is known for its dependability, but it has had its share of problems over the years. Some common issues reported by owners of the 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan include transmission problems, oil leaks, failing power door locks, and engine stalling.

Transmission problems are a common complaint among 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan owners. Many drivers have reported that their minivans experience difficulty shifting, with the transmission downshifting after pressing the gas pedal and then shifting up when easing off the gas. This can make it difficult to maintain a constant speed, and the transmission may also shudder and stall on the last downshift while slowing to a stop. Occasional upshifts can be harsh, and the transmission may lug like a manual transmission in high gear. These issues have been addressed in factory service bulletins, but they can still be a problem for some vehicles.

Oil leaks are another common issue with the 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan. Some owners have reported leaks in the oil filter adapter in the engine block, which may be traced back to the oil filter housing adapter or the gasket itself. Dodge has made a revised oil filter adapter to address this problem, and some owners have had the issue fixed at no cost because it was included in the warranty.

Failing power door locks are also a problem for some 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan owners. This issue is often attributed to a faulty key and internal switch, which can cause the door locks to malfunction. Drivers have reported that a beep confirmed that their doors were locked before driving, but upon checking later, they found their doors unlocked. Some owners have been able to restore their power door lock's function by removing and replacing the 20 amp fuse.

Engine stalling is another common problem with the 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan. This issue is often caused by a dirty throttle body, which can result in low engine idle speed or frequent stalling. Cleaning the throttle body usually corrects this issue.

In summary, while the Dodge Grand Caravan is a dependable minivan, it has had its share of problems over the years. Some common issues reported by owners of the 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan include transmission problems, oil leaks, failing power door locks, and engine stalling. These issues can be frustrating for drivers, but many of them can be addressed with simple repairs or maintenance.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-11-20
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1992 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN MINI VAN. FRONT WHEEL DRIVE WITH A 3.3 ENGINE. EVERY TIME THE SERPENTINE BELT GETS THE SLIGHTEST AMOUNT OF MOISTURE ON IT...IT COMES OFF! AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH WHICH REQUIRES PAYING A PRO TO REINSTALL IT. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT ONE LOSES ALL POWER STEERING NOT MENTION ALL FUNCTIONS CONTROLLED BY THE BELT! THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED TO ME WAS IN RAIN ON A BUSY TWO LANE HIGHWAY AND I ALMOST FLIPPED THE VAN! IT HAPPENS WITHOUT WARNING AND WITH IMMEDIATE LOSS OF POWER STEERING. I HAVE RELOCATED THE TENSIONER AND PULLEY ASSEMBLY WITH NO SATISFACTION. THE PROBLEM IS THAT CHRYSLER DESIGNED THESE MINI VANS WITH NO SHIELDS INSTALLED TO TURN MOISTURE FROM THE ENTIRE PULLEY SYSTEM (TOP OR BOTTOM) AND THE PULLEYS HAVE NO 'LIP' TO HOLD THE BELT IN PLACE ALLOWING IT TO SLIDE OFF WHEN WET! IS THERE NO WAY CHRYSLER CAN BE FORCED TO INSTALL AN OEM PRODUCT OR SHIELD TO PREVENT THIS AND SAVE LIVES? THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN ALL CHRYSLER MINI VANS FROM APPRX. 1992-2007. *TR

I KNOW CHRYSLER PERFORMED THE RECALL BECAUSE THE NEW "BIGGER" WASHERS ARE ON THE LIFT SUPPORTS. AS I HAVE NO WAY TO EXAMINE THE BOLTS FOR STRESS CRACKING, THERE IS NO MAINTENANCE I CAN PERFORM TO INSURE THE REAR LIFTGATE WON'T FALL ONTO THE HEAD OF ME OR SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY. WAS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE A ONE-TIME RECALL FOR CHRYSLER? I GOT THE IMPRESSION THAT THIS RECALL WAS SUPPOSED TO "FIX" THE SHEARING BOLT PROBLEM, BUT IT IS SURPRISING TO ME THAT IT HAS RETURNED. I THINK IT IS VERY DANGEROUS.

Negative 1992 Dodge Grand caravan car reviews

  1. Simeon Thiel 2024-11-14

I purchased my mini-bus with a 3.3 6L engine and 93000 miles on it just over 3 years ago for only $5000. Since then, I have put 214000 miles on it. It does use oil, but a valve gasket job would fix that. I have had to replace the transmission twice, but the first time was largely due to my choice of mechanics. Despite using it as a truck for hauling lumber, a camper on trips, a taxi, and generally abusing it, my van has kept running excellently up until 200000 miles. Around that time, the water pump and fuel pump needed replacing, but who could blame it? I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of this vehicle and will keep it until it dies. Then, I will go buy another one!

  2. Marcelino Wolf 2024-07-16

I bought this car when it was just a year old with 43000 miles on it. It has been an excellent vehicle for getting my kids to and from all of their events, and for hauling. When they went to college, this car was unbeatable in terms of space. It has also been great for transporting lumber. You can easily fit a sheet of plywood in the vehicle, lay it down flat, and still close the doors. Although it now has 200000 miles and is showing its age, I would like to keep it for two more years because it is great for hauling. However, I did replace the transmission at 134000 miles and the oil pressure is beginning to be poor.

You bought this van back in '93 with only 42,500 miles on it. Since then, you've driven it for over 187,600 miles (as of 3/25/04). While you've had to replace the front brake pads and rotors quite frequently, you've been impressed with the 3.3L motor, which has been outstanding. It doesn't burn or leak oil and runs like it did the day you bought the van. You've had some issues with the transmission, but luckily it was covered under warranty. Additionally, you've had to replace both drive axles and the right hub assembly. You've also had to replace the water pump, fuel pump, and A/C unit. Despite these issues, you feel like you've definitely gotten your money's worth from this van in terms of service and relative comfort.

Our Dodge Caravan has been a reliable vehicle for us. Although the transmission was rebuilt at 60,000 miles and it now has 125,000 miles, it has always started and gotten us where we wanted to go. While the transmission did leak and required monitoring, my brother's Caravan has experienced the same issue. It seems that Dodge has yet to address this problem. The AWD is particularly impressive in snowy conditions. If given the chance, I would still purchase another Dodge Caravan, but I might also consider the Chevy Astro as a more cost-effective option.

I purchased this car for $2000 when it was 11 years old. I needed a vehicle that could transport 7 people and this one caught my eye at a local dealer. In hindsight, I should have done a more thorough check before buying it. Unfortunately, within 6 months, I had to spend $400 on repairs including brakes, rotors, bearings, exhaust, and transmission seals. Additionally, I still needed to replace the radiator, thermostat, tires, and the paint is peeling off in chunks. On two occasions, the car stopped running for no apparent reason, and the A/C stopped working on the day I bought it. After replacing the radiator, the fan stopped running, and I even had the reserve on the radiator boil. The only thing that has saved me is the warning alarm that the van is overheating.
