Common 2017 Dodge Grand caravan problems
The Dodge Grand Caravan, while generally reliable, has faced several common problems across various model years. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:
- Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) Issues (2011 model year): According to many owners of the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan, problems with the TIPM are typical. Sometimes the minivan won’t start or has difficulty starting; other times, its windows and doors tend to open randomly. Some owners have complained that their minivan cranks but won’t start. Although the automaker is aware of the widespread issue with its TIPM in this model year, it has yet to issue a recall to fix it.
- Engine Problems (2009 model year): Many owners of the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan have reported engine problems. Many have reported that their van sometimes abruptly stops while they’re driving. The vehicle also displays the traction control light before it stops while in motion. On some occasions, there is a loss of power steering. Aside from the engine stalling, some owners have also noticed engine misfires and starter issues. Excessive oil consumption and the check engine light turning on were also prevalent. The automaker fixed this problem by issuing a recall on 2009 Dodge Grand Caravans.
- Cracked Torque Converter (2018 model year): One of the most common consumer complaints with the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan is a cracked torque converter in the transmission. This can cause slipping and issues with gear shifting. Dodge has been aware of this issue, but instead of issuing a recall, they have manufactured a repair kit fabricated specifically to fix the fracture. However, if your 2018 Grand Caravan did not receive these needed repairs, you may be at risk for an expensive repair bill.
- Dim Headlights and Electrical Issues (2018 model year): The stock headlights on the Dodge Grand Caravan are noticeably dimmer than a standard vehicle headlight. Some consumers even complained that they were nearly useless. To remedy this, new, higher wattage bulbs will have to be put in the lights, and the regulator chip that was the cause of the recall needs to be replaced. Due to the faulty regulator chip, there are several electrical issues with the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan. The power locks regularly fail, which can be inconvenient, but the bigger issue is that the electrical problems can cause stalling. Some consumers even reported that stalling has happened at highway speeds, which can be incredibly dangerous.
These issues, while not affecting all vehicles, are common enough to be significant concerns for potential buyers. It's important to note that not all vehicles of these model years will experience these problems, and many owners have reported no issues at all. However, these common problems should be taken into consideration when purchasing a used Dodge Grand Caravan.

- Summary: As I was driving home on a city street, the entire car locked. I had no steering control. My brakes didn’t work the Entire vehicle locked. In the middle of the street. I turned the ignition off, put it in park and restarted the car only then did it work properly. This is the second time this vehicle has locked. This is very dangerous as I had a child in the car with me and I was in traffic. My brakes didn’t work, I had to use two feet really hard then I was able to stop the vehicle. The steering wheel didn’t work. Nothing worked. I don’t know What’s the problem. The very first time this happened, while dropping the child off at school, I put the car in park, I was not able to get the shifter out of park. The car locked. I sat in my car, wondering what to do decided to go on the web and check out problems with this particular vehicle, then I noticed there is a little door leading to the shifter to change it manually. But when you are in traffic, there is no time to look for a screwdriver to open the door to do anything manually. This is a safety hazard and I really don’t know why there is not a recall on this vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG2HR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: We found a warranty extension for Dodge Caravan Driver and Passenger Sliding Door Power Lock Actuators, but when I searched for our VIN, it is not included, but we are having the same problem. All of a sudden, our driver side sliding door was stuck shut, and would not open manually or with the key fob. I found a workaround from an online forum to hold the manual lock to open position, while pressing the unlock button either on the driver door or the key fob. Since then, when the sliding door shuts and wouldn't open, this is what we do. And then shortly after that, we noticed a loud buzzing sound coming from the same door when accelerating and the automatic lock activates.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG7HR
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Lock actuator malfunction. Unable to open side door.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-08
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG3HR
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: This weekend both passenger and driver side power sliding doors seized shut, in the locked position. The doors will not manually unlock with applying a lot of force to the locking lever. Looking online there is a manufacturers warranty that was extended to 15 years or 150,000 miles for this specific problem, pointing out the locking actuator as a faulty product, only on certain models, and years. My make and year qualify but the manufacturer has not added my model to the list of affected parts. I have verified my model has the same actuator MPN as the one affected, but still not added to the list. This is a safety issue as how do we get our kids out in a safe and timely manner in an event of an emergency? This weekend we had to crawl back to the back to safely buckle them in and get them out. Would like for this issue to be forced to add the 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT model to the extension of the manufacturers warranty known problem with rear power sliding and locking door actuators. The manufacturer is aware of the problem and is at risk of a lawsuit of this issue.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
- VIN: 2C4RDGDG5HR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Driver's side passenger door will not open due to a faulty actuator. Other vehicles with the same make/model and year have this exact issue covered under warranty, but for some reason this one is not. I believe the warranty should be expanded to cover more dodge vehicles. This is a Safety issue as it prevents a safe and timely evacuation from the vehicle.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
- VIN: 2C4RDGEG2HR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Hello, My van is having a pcm issue that some vins have that theres a recall is on. U87. While driving the vechile will randomly shut off and turn back on. This has almost cause a accident with my kids in the car. My vin isn't covered by this recall but i would like it to be covered.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
- VIN: 2C4RDGEG1HR
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Sliding automatic door makes loud buzzing noise when opening. Apparently this is a known problem and Dodge has done nothing about it. After doing some research it seems everyone that has this model has this issue after a few years. It will eventually be a safety issue when the door stops working and we can’t get out in an emergency. Do the right thing and make this a recall. It’s a known issue.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-08
- VIN: 2C4RDGEG1HR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The car stalls and shuts off when coming to a stop. When attempting to stop, sometimes it keeps moving forward as if the breaks weren’t working properly. It only happens when I’m slowing down. No codes comes up nor does the check engine light turn on. It had been checked by different mechanis and they cant figure out what is wrong with the car.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-19
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG2HR
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Driver side passenger door is stuck in lock. Can not manuallly unlock from inside or outside. Have tried with key entry and that isn't working either. Had mechanic check and he thinks it could be a mechanical issue and could be very costly to fix because unable to unlock manually and would not be able to remove door to fix. This could possible be a safety issue if ever in an accident. Our daughter has the same year and is experiencing the same issue.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-13
- VIN: 2C4RDGBG5HR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The driver side sliding door lock actuator has failed. I found MOPAR Warranty Bulletin number D-21-15, dated November 10, 2021 that indicates Dodge has extended the warranty for this part to 2015-2017 year Grand Caravans because this part commonly fails. However, Dodge is refusing to cover the replacement of this part for my vehicle. Mileage is 72,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-09
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG3HR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Unable to open rear left sliding door, lock actuator is failed. Burning smell from left sliding door 1 year ago. Right sliding door make buzzing noice from the lock actuator area, sometimes unable to open sliding door.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-09
- VIN: 2C4RDGBGXHR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Both sliding door actuators are malfunctioning. The door locks have to be manually locked and unlock. Searching the internet, I found that if the door is not lock, the door can disengage and fly open. This has not occurred and we keep the doors locked. I was told by the dealership that because my 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan was manufactured in Canada that the RT warranty does not pertain to my vehicle. This is a very expensive repair. Since both of my doors are affected, it could cost around $1,300 to repair both. If this was an isolated incident, I could understand having to pay for the repair. However, it seems to be a common problem. The part is defective and the cost should not be bared by the consumer.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-08
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG2HR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I then have to restart the vehicle which causes a delay which other drivers are not patient about. They immediately want to go and I have to flash my hazards and restart the van. Mechanical issue is unknown by the mechanic and dealer service department.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22

I completely understand why people might think I'm crazy for purchasing a minivan to tote my dogs around, but it was the best option available. The van is low enough that my furry friends can get in and out as they grow older, and it's roomy enough that my German Shepherd is not slouching or crammed in the back seat. It's absolutely perfect! I simply put the 2nd row of Stow & Go seating down, place the dog beds on the floor, and we're ready to go.
-
I really like the Grand Caravan for its comfort and versatility. It's amazing how much mileage I put on my van, around 33,000 miles a year! I'm happy to report that my 2017 only needed a battery and one set of tires and brakes over 96,000 miles of highway driving. I'm excited to share that I just ordered a black 2019 SXT. With the chrome trim, it looks like a limo!
-
This is a great family car, although it may not be the best option for quick shopping trips. I find it particularly comfortable for long journeys, as it provides ample support for my bad back.
-
Great van for travel and lots of room to carry big things.
-
This vehicle is perfect for anyone looking for a reliable option for trips, gigs, work, and/or hauling. It's roomy, responsive, and functional. I highly recommend it!

We purchased the vehicle brand new, but unfortunately, we have been experiencing a misfire since the first month, which the dealership has been unable to locate. Additionally, the sliding door rattles at times, and the running lights, also known as driving lights, flicker continuously when idling in gear. The fuel mileage is also not as advertised, as we have calculated that we only get around 16 to 17 miles per gallon, which is far from the 25.xx miles per gallon displayed on the dashboard. Although the dealership has offered to warranty the vehicle, they have repeatedly told us that these issues are normal operations. In our opinion, we would not recommend purchasing this vehicle, as it has been nothing but a major headache and disappointment.

I've had this van for 18 months and unfortunately, I really dislike it. There are a few issues that I've encountered such as the antenna not going down, which means I can't take it to the speedy carwash. Additionally, the safety features on this car are not up to par and I believe it should be reported to the National Safety Department. The passenger doors also do not open with the button or otherwise, which can be frustrating. Unfortunately, there was no warning that the doors were going out and it was a scary situation when my children were stuck in the car and could only exit through the hatchback or climb over the seats to get to the front door. On the bright side, the vehicle is flex fuel so I'm able to use E85. Overall, I have to say that I really dislike this vehicle.

During my trip to Maui, I rented a van to test drive it and see if it would be a good fit for my family in the future. Despite having four kids, the handling and acceleration were decent. On my second day, I was still enjoying driving it around and exploring the island. Although I wasn't familiar with all the functions on the key controls, I found the lock and unlock feature easy to use. Unfortunately, I accidentally hit the open trunk key without realizing it was open, and there was no beeping sound or flashing alert on the dash like my Toyota van. As a result, the trunk window shattered when I drove the car out of the car port. I believe this may be a design flaw, but it didn't ruin my vacation.

When asked about our decision not to purchase the 2017 Dodge Caravan (Base Model), I explained that while my wife loved it, I had concerns about the mid-row seats not having the Stow N Go feature that initially drew us to consider Caravans. We test drove a new 2016 model that was priced around 20K 'out the door,' but ultimately decided against it due to the larger size and weight of the minivan, which would have significantly increased our operating costs compared to our current Hyundai sedan. Additionally, the gas mileage was a bit disappointing, and we know that the mileage shown on the stickers is not always accurate. I hope this helps clarify our decision.

My air conditioner has failed three times. First, the motor failed, then the lines started leaking, and then the lines leaked again. I found the service in Winnipeg to be subpar, as I had to wait three months for them to repair it. When I came to the States, the air broke again, but it only took one day to fix. Interestingly, it was the same problem that Winnipeg had just fixed. I am curious to know if anyone else has had similar issues with their air conditioning.
