Common 2016 Dodge Grand caravan problems

The 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan has several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include rust forming on the hood, door alarm issues, and cylinder misfires.

Rust forming on the hood is a prevalent complaint among Grand Caravan owners. This issue typically occurs at around 55,000 miles and is caused by paint chips on the hood. If left unaddressed, the rust can cause the paint to blister, necessitating a repainting of the hood, which can cost around $1,000 depending on local labor rates.

Door alarm issues are another common problem found on some 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan models, particularly at around 100,000 miles. The door open sensor fails as the van ages, causing the door alarm to malfunction. Replacing the sensor is a relatively simple project that costs around $300.

Cylinder misfires have also been reported by owners of the 2016 Grand Caravan, typically at around 80,000 miles. There are several reasons why misfires may occur, including bad spark plugs. Replacing the spark plugs costs around $350, while some owners have reported repairing or replacing the cylinder head, which costs around $2,500.

In addition to these common problems, there are also several recalls on the 2016 Grand Caravan, including a recall for fuel rail tubes that can leak, leading to a fire. Dodge will replace the fuel rail tubes on affected models for free.

Despite these issues, a well-maintained 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan should last around 200,000 miles, although this is about 100,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Sienna. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than the competition, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $564 per year.

It is important to note that many used 2016 Grand Caravan models have over 100,000 miles, and buyers should be prepared to replace the ABS control module oil cooler, which costs $350, as well as the wheel bearings, which cost $150.

In conclusion, while the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan has several common problems, it is still a reliable minivan that can last for many years with proper maintenance. However, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and factor in the cost of potential repairs when considering purchasing a used Grand Caravan.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-15
  • VIN: 2C4RDGCGXGR
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When leaving for a family outing on Saturday, I noticed the driver headrest did not look right. It was separated in 2 pieces and would not go back together. When trying to find a resolution I learned that this unexpected deployment is a common problem that apparently Dodge is not yet willing to fix. I called the dealer where the van was purchased and they confirmed that there are NO recalls for this vehicle and the repair would be out of my pocket. They would not even quote a price without bringing the vehicle to the dealer to diagnose (for $119). I am willing to provide photos for anyone that needs it to confirm this separation to include drivers door label and VIN number. It should not take $119 for anyone to confirm this AHS deployment. Frankly, I am appalled that the manufacturer is not choosing to recall vehicles with this complaint or that there is an active investigation about this matter but NO recall. How are these vehicles considered safe? And how long will we have to drive a vehicle that cannot protect us because safety mechanism has already activated (without a crash until there is one)?!

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-17
  • VIN: 2C4RDGBG8GR
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was driving my van which I have had nothing but trouble with this dodge caravan, go to turn at the intersection and it just shuts off started right back up but starting to turn and it just shut off. Happened twice now, had the battery checked and every thing else seemed good just didn’t know why this happened but it almost got us hot the first time. There are a lot of dodge vans that aren’t included in the S44 recall and our VIN numbers don’t pop up. I mean the air bags are killing people in these dodges now, I’ve had nothing but a hard time with this vehicle. They are unsafe, if I wasn’t poor and could afford a good van and not bottom of the barrel I wouldn’t be dealing with this it seems. But the poor are expendable. I’d rather take my kids in my beat up ford than in my new van. That’s crazy. It’s going to get someone killed if it hasn’t already happened.

Negative 2016 Dodge Grand caravan car reviews

  1. Geoffrey Grant 2024-08-03

I recently purchased a new van from Wilson Motors in Corvallis, Oregon. Unfortunately, I had a negative experience with the trade-in of my dependable Toyota Sienna. The dealership only offered me $1000 for a car that was valued at $4-5000. Additionally, the new Dodge Caravan did not have sufficient heat to keep ice off the windshield, despite being told that it met the standards. I had to take it in three times to address the non-functioning cruise control, and the repair people were overworked and rude. The stress factor at the service desk was palpable. However, the manager was a very nice man who helped me resolve the issue. After taking the van in overnight, they were able to replace the cruise control. As someone who was used to the ordinary features of my Toyota Sienna, I was not aware that I needed to remember to turn the lights on and off in this new vehicle. Additionally, the gas tank did not lock from the inside, and using a regular store-bought gas cap with a lock caused a light to turn on in the dash that cost $185 to fix. Lastly, the back seats were not as comfortable as I had hoped. Overall, this was a disappointing experience and I hope that Wilson Motors can improve their customer service in the future.

  2. Timothy Trantow 2024-08-03

I am confident that the issues with my vehicle will be resolved. Although I am not currently satisfied with the situation, I am reassured that the differential leak is covered under warranty. However, the engine light has come on again and there is now an evap leak, which unfortunately is not covered. I had a similar issue in 2018 with the 02 sensor, which had to be replaced. Despite these challenges, I trust that the dealership will address these problems and ensure that my new vehicle is in top condition. While it is concerning to have experienced these issues early on, I remain optimistic that they will be resolved to my satisfaction.

  3. Randall Conn 2024-07-25

I really like this car for the most part. It's reliable, moderately comfortable, and overall a good package. However, the gas mileage is absolutely horrible. According to the sticker, it should get an average of 20 mpg, with 18 mpg on city streets and 24 mpg on highways. Unfortunately, it's not too great on city streets, getting only about 8 or 9 mpg at best. Since I mostly do city driving and I'm retired with a limited budget, I can't say I'm happy with it at this point. Dodge has promised to fix it, so I'm hopeful. We'll see how much For instance, when I attempt to call my son Jack using a preset number, the system often asks me (I can't recall the exact words due to my old age) something like, 'You have dialed 4#. Is this correct?' To clear the computer's memory, I have to turn off the car and restart it, which resets the computer. If there's no one else in the car to dial manually on the phone, I can't do it because it's illegal to do so while driving (Distracted driving...). At other times, the system will say something else that is also incorrect. However, if I say 'Call France' instead, it works fine, and the call goes through. I suppose the computer's voice recognition program thinks that 'Jack' and 'France' sound similar. If an emergency ever arises, I doubt the Uconnect system would allow me to call 911 without any issues. I hope I never have to test that theory.

  4. Burley Kovacek 2024-06-25

The Gear van is known for its reliability, but when it comes to Dodge engineering, some vehicles have ticking lifters in their motors.

  5. Joesph Marquardt 2024-06-15

Hi there! We've been driving our 2016 Grand Caravan since 2018 and it has clocked around 67k miles. Unfortunately, we're currently experiencing some issues with the transmission and it needs to be fixed or replaced. It's currently at a transmission shop waiting to be checked out. We've heard some negative things about Dodge transmissions in the past, and it seems like our experience is confirming those rumors.

You'll love the black package and the spacious cargo area! However, we understand that the transmission shifting can be a bit rough and cause some vibrations when shifting from drive to park or reverse.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that I bought my car brand new in 2016 and it has been such a reliable vehicle. I've put 47,000 miles on it so far and haven't had any issues. Last summer, I even pulled a trailer with about 3,000 lbs on it and it handled it like a champ! In fact, it stopped better than my old 99 Chevy Tahoe. Thanks for letting me share!

So far I like it! It's great for my dog and has a lot of storage space. It's not the best on gas, but it's a van! I don't like how the transmission shifts and I wish it was smoother. I like how it sits higher, but I also wish I had gotten built-in seat warmers and a tow package. I'll see how it goes this winter! 4 stars.

Drive by wire is good on cruise control, but lousy on manual control. The ride is excellent. I'm glad to hear that you love the Stow-N-Go seats!

So glad to hear that everything has been great for you so far at 1600 miles!
