AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-10-05
  • VIN: 1B4GP44G4WB
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THE DRIVER'S HORN DOES NOT WORK AND HASN'T SINCE IT WAS TAKEN IN TO REPLACE THE CLOCK SPRING ASSEMBLY. THIS WAS DONE AS PER A RECALL ISSUED BY NHTSA AND DAIMLERCHRYSTLER CORPORATION RELATING TO DRIVER'S AIRBAG BY THE ORIGINAL OWNER. HE ALSO DID NOT HAVE THE ORIGINAL PAPERWORK ON THE VAN. I AM THE SECOND OWNER AND WHEN I DISCOVERED THE HORN DID NOT WORK. AFTER RESEARCHING AND SUBSCRIBING TO THE THE NHTSA RECALL ALERTS I DETERMINED THAT THIS MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THE CLOCK SPRING REPLACEMENT. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE REPLACEMENT CLOCK SPRING COULD HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE AS WELL, BECAUSE IT WAS DONE SO SOON AFTER THE RECALL WAS ISSUED. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHERE I LIVE AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ISSUED AND THEY WERE SORRY, BUT THEY COULDN'T REPLACE IT AGAIN. THEY SUGGESTED THAT I TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED. I EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT I WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND DIDN'T KNOW WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED FROM ORIGINALLY. EVEN WHEN I TOLD THEM THAT I WOULD PAY THE COST OF THE REPAIR, THEY WERE NOT INTERESTED. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC AND HE DIDN'T WANT TO TOUCH IT BECAUSE THERE WAS SO MUCH INVOLVED IN THE STEERING COLUMN THAT COULD GO WRONG AND HE DIDN'T HAVE THE EXPERTISE TO DO IT. THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE AND HASN'T BEEN SINCE BEFORE AND AFTER I PURCHASED IT. MY CONCERN IS IF THE HORN DOESN'T WORK'THEN HOW CAN I BE SURE THE AIRBAG DOES. I'M STILL DRIVING THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE I CAN'T SELL IT TO SOMEONE ELSE IN THIS CONDITION. IS THERE NO RECOURSE IF THE VEHICLE AS NOT REPAIRED AS PER THE NHTSA'S RECALL? THIS VEHICLE ONLY HAS 91054 MILES ON IT AS OF THIS DATE.

Negative 1998 Dodge Grand caravan car reviews

  1. Vincent Lubowitz 2024-11-13

This is the first Dodge I have ever owned and unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. I initially thought the van would be a great choice for my family, but it turned out to be nothing but trouble. The transmission failed at 24k and then again at 90k, the air conditioner stopped working at 55k, and there were electrical problems at 45k. Additionally, the valves made a clicking noise from the first week, and despite the service department's assurances that it would go away, it never did. After the warranty expired, they offered to fix it for 3k, which was not feasible for me. I would not recommend buying a Dodge based on my experience, but I encourage you to do your own research and make an informed decision.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my van. I've had it for 5 years and driven 107,000 miles, and I'm happy to say that I've only needed to do regular maintenance, replace the battery once, and change the brakes twice (the second time at 100,000 miles). It's amazing how much I can fit in this van when I go on vacation - I can even bring the whole family along! And despite its size, I still get good MPG, around 20. While I didn't buy it for its looks or performance, I'm really happy with its basic functionality as a van. Thanks for listening!

Since moving to North America, I made a point of buying American vehicles. However, I have had some issues with two Chrysler products I purchased in 1998 due to poor engineering. Unfortunately, they were designed to last only as long as the warranty. For instance, the transmission failed just one day after the 3-year warranty expired. Although Chrysler did offer to pay half of the repair costs, they recommended that I purchase an extended warranty next time. Additionally, the rear door latch is no longer functioning. It's been a frustrating experience, but I remain hopeful that things will improve in the future.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your van! It's great to know that you've been able to put so many miles on it without any issues. Your husband sounds like he takes great care of it. I agree that a hideaway 3rd seat feature would be a great addition. It's wonderful to hear that it's so comfortable on road trips and has plenty of room. Thank you for sharing your experience, and I hope you continue to enjoy your van for many more miles to come!

At 5 years and 60,174 miles, the van unfortunately experienced a breakdown. Despite investing $2200 in repairs for the cam shaft, valves, head gasket, and other components, the van broke down again with the same issue after only three weeks. It seems that there may be an issue behind the engine block, which will require a new motor. While I had hoped for a longer lifespan for my vehicle, I remain confident in my decision to invest in a Dodge/Chrysler product. I will be exploring my options for a replacement motor and look forward to getting back on the road soon.

This is my second van. The first one was a 1997 Voyager mini-van. It was awesome! I bought it for only $100 with 140k miles on it. The previous owner told me the transmission was bad, but I replaced it at 160k miles and also had to replace the motor. It ran like a tank in the snow. During Pennsylvania's Snowmageddon storm in 2009, I almost used it as a snowplow. I couldn't get stuck if I tried! I volunteer for the fire department and Red Cross, and during the height of the storm, I took 7 people to a shelter with 2 feet of snow on the ground. I didn't have any problems at all. Finally, a 1998 Dodge Grand Sport with 180k miles on it fell into my lap. It was a fleet-leased and company-maintained van. It looks great with no rust and still looks new. Man, does it have some power for a van! I love this van!

The minivan we purchased used has been a great vehicle for us. We have been very satisfied with its comfort, cargo capacity, and fuel economy, averaging 19 mpg city and 25 highway. However, we have experienced issues with Dodge's serpentine belt pulley design, which has caused the belts to wear out quickly. Despite being warned about this issue, we decided to take a chance on Dodge. Unfortunately, after having to replace the belts three times in just nine months, we have decided to trade it in. Overall, we remain confident in our decision to purchase a Dodge minivan and would recommend it to others, with the caveat to be aware of this potential issue.

Hey there! I bought this minivan 4 years ago and it has been such a versatile vehicle for me. I've used it as a cargo van, fitting in 12 people and 15 backpacks, for traveling, and even a few off-road sessions. It's incredibly spacious and I love having all that room. Sure, I've had a few problems, but I take responsibility for them and overall, I don't think it's a bad car.

Dodge has replaced the main computer module three times and now the wiring harness needs to be replaced. Despite the recurring electrical issues, the mechanical components have been reliable. However, the sudden stalling of the vehicle without any warning is a major concern for any driver, especially for a soccer mom who needs a dependable car. Rest assured, we will address this issue with the utmost urgency and professionalism.

I have driven this van on vacations and hauled lumber. With the tow package, it works as well as a truck. However, the 6-cylinder engine consumes a lot of gas, costing around $30 a week. Due to the high cost of driving in the city, I bought another Toyota car to drive. Nevertheless, I still have the van, and it has proven to be a reliable vehicle.
