SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-06-02
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: MY DODGE CARAVAN HAS A LIFETIME WARRANTY DUE TO A RECALL ON THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM THAT WAS ORIGINALLY INSTALLED. TURNS OUT THE ORIGINAL OWNERS BROUGHT THE VAN IN FOR THIS RECALL, BUT THE PART WAS NOT REPLACED. SO YEARS LATER IT GAVE OUT. THE VAN HAS 36K MILES, SO IF IT WAS REPLACED WHEN THE PREVIOUS OWNERS BROUGHT IT IN EVERYTHING WOULD BE FINE. (THE PREVIOUS OWNERS WERE OLDER AND DISABLED, SO I DONT THINK THEY REALIZED NOTHING WAS DONE) ANYWAYS, DODGE IS REFUSING TO FIX THE ABS SYSTEM, AND TELL ME THEY DON'T HAVE A DIAGNOSIS TOOL, SO THEY CANT FIX IT. MY MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO ID WHAT WAS WRONG, BUT WAS UNABLE TO ORDER A PART DUE TO THIS LIFETIME RECALL. THEY ARE ALSO SAYING THEY CANT LOCATE THE PARTS IN THE SYSTEM, BUT I FIND THAT HARD TO BELIEVE. WHAT THEY OFFER ME WAS A MADE UP AMOUNT OF WHAT THEY THINK MY VAN IS WORTH (THEY SAID KELLEY BLUE BOOK VALUE IN FAIR CONDITION, WHICH IS NOT CORRECT I COME UP WITH OVER TWICE THAT AMOUNT ON KBB.COM AND MY VAN IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION AND IS A MOBILITY MODIFIED VAN, MEANING IT HAS A HANDICAP RAMP, BUILT IN TRACKS FOR TIE DOWNS, AND IS DROPPED6-8 INCHES, WITH AIR LIFTS.). WHICH IS 1/3 OF WHAT I CAN SELL IT FOR ON CRAIGSLIST, AND 1/2 OF WHAT I PAID WITH MY RECENT PARTS I PUT IN TO MAKE IT LIKE NEW. SO HERE'S MY QUESTION, WHAT DOES LIFETIME WARRANTY MEAN ON A RECALL? DO THEY HAVE TO FIX IT? OR AM I STUCK WITH WHAT EVER THEY WANT TO DO? PLEASE ADVISE. THIS WAS AN IMPORTANT VEHICLE, AS IT WAS TO BE USED TO MOVE A HANDICAP PERSON AROUND.

CHRYSLER NO LONGER MAKES THE PARTS. AT FIRST THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PART AND NOW THE SHIPPING DATE CONTINUES TO BE EXTENDED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE CHRYSLER NATIONAL PARTS SERVICE GROUP CAN TELL ME WHEN THEY WILL GET A PART. IT IS NOW AUGUST 5, 2013.HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT FOR A PART ON A LIFETIME WARRANTY? BECAUSE OF THE AGE OF THE VAN, CHRYSLER REFUSES TO PROVIDE A CAR FOR ME TO DRIVE. CAN THEY AVOID A LIFETIME WARRANTY BY CLAIMING THEY CAN'T FIND THE PARTS? I HAVE SPOKEN TO AT LEAST THREE DIFFERENT "CUSTOMER SERVICE" PEOPLE AND THEY ALL TELL ME THEY DON'T KNOW WHEN THE PART WILL BE DELIVERED TO THE DEALER. *TR

This van has been a pretty good car. It had a new transmission put in at about 16000 miles, which is not unexpected for a Chrysler van. Recently, it needed a new catalytic converter and starter. However, it rides very nicely and the 3.3L engine has plenty of power. The interior is quite roomy and I get 22 mpg, almost all on the highway. Although the paint is pretty bad, rust isn't a major problem. Overall, this car still runs great even at 218000 miles.

You bought this van back in '93 with only 42,500 miles on it. Since then, you've driven it for over 187,600 miles (as of 3/25/04). While you've had to replace the front brake pads and rotors quite frequently, you've been impressed with the 3.3L motor, which has been outstanding. It doesn't burn or leak oil and runs like it did the day you bought the van. You've had some issues with the transmission, but luckily it was covered under warranty. Additionally, you've had to replace both drive axles and the right hub assembly. You've also had to replace the water pump, fuel pump, and A/C unit. Despite these issues, you feel like you've definitely gotten your money's worth from this van in terms of service and relative comfort.

The 1993 Grand Caravan is a great people, pet, and cargo hauler. It is comfortable, reliable, and economical. The Quad Captain Chairs are especially comfortable and keep younger occupants separated. While the engine may not be the quickest, it is a dependable workhorse that can get up and go in a pinch. Although the steering is a bit heavy, overall this vehicle is a great third car to have for muddy soccer days or when you need to pick up some mulch and carry some young kids and their friends. Consider getting a used one for ultimate functionality and utility.

Our Dodge Caravan has been a reliable vehicle for us. Although the transmission was rebuilt at 60,000 miles and it now has 125,000 miles, it has always started and gotten us where we wanted to go. While the transmission did leak and required monitoring, my brother's Caravan has experienced the same issue. It seems that Dodge has yet to address this problem. The AWD is particularly impressive in snowy conditions. If I were to make the decision again, I would still consider purchasing a Dodge Caravan, although I might also consider the Chevy Astro for its value.

Solid transportation. Captain seats for four are great. Lots of room. Keeps on ticking.

After 12 years and 158K miles, I can't help but feel grateful for my trusty vehicle. It has been a reliable companion, with only the second transmission needing replacement. I'm happy to report that there's no rust or squeaks, and the captain's chairs are still as comfortable as ever. Plus, we still get over 25 mpg on a trip! I couldn't have completed my basement renovation without it - it's been a real workhorse hauling all my supplies from Home Depot. It even still pulls a trailer with ease! While there was one odd incident this past winter when the rear tailgate window shattered after I closed the driver's door, overall it's been a great ride. The first transmission died at 69K miles, but the dealer covered it without question under the 7/70 warranty. The second transmission is doing just fine. The radio did go 4-5 years ago, but I replaced it with a CD player. I've never had to do any work on the power accessories. I plan to keep it until it finally gives up the ghost!

I am so happy with my car! I bought it brand new off the lot and it has been with me through so much. I've pulled a trailer all the way to South Dakota and back to Wisconsin, and driven from Ohio to Wisconsin at least 30 times. Even with 130000 miles on it, it still runs like it's brand new. It's been through 2 kids and has never broken down. I did have to replace the transmission once in the past year, but overall, I couldn't be more pleased with my car!

We bought this van with 88,000 miles on it, and now, 7 years later, it has 219,000 miles. It's been our family car, so wherever I go, it goes too. We've never had to replace the engine or transmission, and my Dodge has been an incredibly reliable vehicle! I love the spaciousness of it, and it handles great! I've even hauled a few bales of hay and always get my feed for the horses in it. I can't say anything bad about it. We've only had to replace the drive axles on both sides, and that's the most we've had in repairs. The transmission is giving us a few problems now, but we watch the fluid and don't use overdrive, which isn't as good on mpg. We're starting to look for a different car, but I hate to give up my Dodge. I just love it!
