Common 1996 Dodge Grand caravan problems
The 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most reported issues is engine stalling, which can be caused by a dirty throttle body. This issue can result in low engine idle while the engine is warming up, causing the oil light to illuminate. The problem can be resolved by cleaning the throttle body.
Another common problem is power door lock failure, which is often attributed to a faulty key and internal switch that causes the door locks to malfunction. This issue can cause the door locks to malfunction, even when a beep confirms that the doors are locked. Some owners were able to restore their power door lock's function by removing and replacing the 20 amp fuse.
Oil leaks are also a common problem in the 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan, especially leaks in the oil filter adapter in the engine block. This issue can be traced back to the oil filter housing adapter or the gasket itself. Dodge has made a revised oil filter adapter to address this problem.
Additionally, some owners have reported transmission failure, which can cause the van to jerk, lurch, and produce grinding noises while the transmission disengages from the engine. This issue was most notorious for the 2002 Caravan model, causing drivers to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the transmission to fix the problem.
The 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan also has issues with its interior accessories, such as alarms going off by themselves, interior lights burning out quickly, and power door lock failure. These fails may look small, but when you count repair and replacement costs, they can add up quickly.
Finally, some owners have reported brake system issues, such as premature brake failure, which is widely reported among many 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan models. This issue can cause drivers to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the transmission to fix the problem.
In summary, the 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan has several common problems, including engine stalling, power door lock failure, oil leaks, transmission failure, interior accessory issues, and brake system problems. These issues can be frustrating for owners, but many of them can be resolved with proper maintenance and repairs.

SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT OR KILLED IF THEY DON'T RECALL THESE AND FIX THEM. APPARENTLY CHRYSLER WANTS TO BE NAMED AFTER SOMEONE ELSE ONCE SOMEONE GETS KILLED AND THEN THEY SUE CHRYSLER AND WIN FOR CHRYSLER BEING CARELESS AND CHEAP WHEN BUILDING A VEHICLE. I AM VERY UPSET BECAUSE IT IS GOING TO COST ME $1200 TO FIX MY DRIVER SIDE STRUT TOWER BECAUSE OF THE MASSIVE RUST MY KIDS RIDE IN THIS VEHICLE AND I DIDN'T BUILD IT I THINK THE PEOPLE WHO DID SHOULD RECALL IT AND FIX IT FOR US, MINIVANS ARE KID VEHICLES WE DON'T BUY THEM JUST TO RIDE AND LOOK COOL IN THEM THEY TRANSPORT PRECIOUS CARGO OUR KIDS I HAVE THREE AND IF SOMETHING WERE TO HAPPEN TO THEM BECAUSE OF A BAD COMPANY MAKING CHEAP STUFF SOMEONE WOULD HAVE TO ANSWER TO ME FOR IT. I BOUGHT THE MINIVAN THINKING DODGE WAS A RESPONSIBLE COMPANY AND GOOD COMPANY BUT I AM NOW HAVING SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT IT WITH THIS HAPPENING. *TR

I'm so glad I purchased the 1996 Grand Caravan 3.0 Engine back in August '96. It has been such a fun vehicle to own! It was reliable for many years until I made the mistake of putting in a lower priced transmission at 250,000 km. However, I learned my lesson and changed it back to the original at 300,000 km. Now, the vehicle is going strong again, even with occasional light towing. One thing to keep in mind is the fuel pump, which unfortunately went out at 306,000 km. Despite these minor setbacks, the Forest Green with tinted glass still looks stylish and ahead of the competition in my view. Great job! It still looks and drives as good as new.
-
I really enjoy driving my van, even when the speedometer reads over 100MPH on the interstate or when I take corners with sports car handling, thanks to those sixteen inch tires. Although I do experience some minor breakdowns, I understand that with 115,000 miles, it's to be expected. The 3.8 liter engine is truly remarkable and performs well even with seven passengers.
-
We are so glad to have a mini van, it is great and very practical. Although the van has 148000 miles on it, I have put 50k on it and it has only needed one repair, which was a water pump. It is a fantastic vehicle for families and for travelling.
-
This van is nearly perfect, except for its faulty transmission. Despite having it fixed three times, it still requires further attention. However, I am confident that the issue can be resolved and the van will perform exceptionally well in the future.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the Dodge Grand Caravan that I purchased after our previous vehicle was totaled in an accident. It's a '96 model with a 3.8L V-6 engine and it has been a great fit for our family. There's plenty of room for all of us, including grandpa, and we have ample space for all of our belongings. The interior lighting is fantastic and the seats are very comfortable. We've even been able to haul furniture and other large items by removing the rear seat. The handling on the freeway is superb and we've only had to replace the battery, brakes, and a set of tires at 159K miles. We make sure to change the fluids regularly to keep it running smoothly. Overall, we feel like we made a great choice with this vehicle!

We have had to replace the transmission three times, fix the AC twice (and possibly a third time), and deal with issues such as ghost wipers, a malfunctioning rear window motor, and poor window washers. Despite these challenges, we remain committed to finding a solution and improving the performance of our van.

We purchased this van because of its nice appearance and comfortable design, as well as the good reputation of Caravans/Chrysler. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the vehicle, including problems with the transmission, water pump, air conditioning, brakes, head gasket, and wiring. We were grateful to have an extended warranty that covered most of the repairs. Although we had some difficulties, we decided to keep the van since it was paid off and the warranty covered most of the engine work. However, we have decided not to purchase another Chrysler product in the future.

I thought I was the only person who called it a money pit. I bought it from my sister who had maintained the car flawlessly for 6 years. Unfortunately, after just 2 weeks, the AC went out, and then 4 weeks later it wouldn't go into reverse. A week later, it wouldn't shift out of gear at 30mph. Then the AC went out again, and now it's not shifting gears. It's been a frustrating experience. My transmission guy said if it weren't for the Caravans, he wouldn't have any business. It's definitely been a learning experience. Thank you for listening.

I have had a number of issues with my van, including multiple replacements such as the transmission, water pump, power steering pump, gas tank, radio, wiper motor, power windows, door locks, and door hinges. Despite these challenges, the engine has remained reliable. I believe that the company could have done better in terms of quality control, and I am disappointed with my experience. However, I remain confident in my decision to not purchase another Dodge in the future.

This car has demonstrated very poor reliability as everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.
