Common 2013 Dodge Grand caravan problems
The Dodge Grand Caravan, a popular minivan, has been known to have several common problems across various model years. In the 2013 model, owners have reported issues with the engine failing to start, worn-out brakes, and transmission failures.
- Engine failing to start: This issue is often caused by a failing Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which is common in many Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler vehicles. Replacing the TIPM costs around $1,200.
- Worn-out brakes: Brake pads and rotors wear out faster than on other minivans, requiring replacement around 40,000 miles. This service costs around $700, depending on local labor rates.
- Transmission failures: Parts in the transmission break down as the van ages, leading to failure around 70,000 miles. Replacing the transmission and torque converter is costly, with an average price of nearly $4,000.
In addition to these issues, the 2013 Grand Caravan has a lower-than-average owner satisfaction score and higher-than-average annual maintenance costs.
For the 2011 model, the most commonly reported problem is with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). This electrical issue can cause the minivan to have difficulty starting, windows and doors to open randomly, or the vehicle to crank but not start. Despite the widespread problem, Dodge has not issued a recall to fix the TIPM issue in this model year.
In the 2009 model, engine problems have been reported, with many owners experiencing abrupt engine stalling while driving. This issue is often accompanied by the traction control light displaying and a loss of power steering. Excessive oil consumption and the check engine light turning on are also prevalent. Dodge fixed this problem by issuing a recall on 2009 Dodge Grand Caravans.
In summary, the Dodge Grand Caravan has common problems across various model years, including issues with the engine, transmission, and TIPM. These issues can lead to expensive repairs and negatively impact owner satisfaction.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG0DR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving our key in the ignition will loosen to the left and completely shut off all electrical for the car. The first time this occurred we were driving 55mph on the highway and had to safely steer off of three lanes of traffic with our kids in the backseat, at the time we thought it was a fluke. Now this is happening more frequently. It is the exact same issue listed under recall L25 “the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.”
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG1DR
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Active front seat headrests deployed without an accident for the second time. Had them replaced and paid for myself the first time years ago. Was compensated by FCA as part of special coverage after the fact. When they deployed again I brought it in and had it diagnosed at Hopkins dodge, it was covered under the special policy. They ordered parts. It took forever for the parts to come off back order. They just arrived in August 2024, I verified with their parts department. I am now told that I am out of the special coverage window and they won’t cover unless I pay the dealership over $200 to diagnose the same problem again. It has not changed. They already said it was covered and now they are trying to back out because it took forever for them to supply the required parts. I need this repaired like they said they would two years ago when I got it first diagnosed and the parts ordered.

- Summary: this is the third time i am filing a complaint. My 2013 dodge grand caravan completely dies and looses all power going over 50 miles per hour. no warning, no codes appear, nothing. looses all power, power steering, brakes, etc. have to get to side of road, wait 20 minutes, then car will start. this has happened now over 16 times. The latest time with my grandchild in the car, the vehicle behind me almost crashed into me. this continues to be a safety issue and it is unclear as to why dodge is doing nothing about this despite multiple complaints by hundreds of drivers. I have spent over $3000 so far trying to fix this to no avail, new battery, fuel pump, fuel filter, TPM relay, new keys, new programming, still happens. will never buy another dodge/chrysler again, and have told family and friends the same potential hazard of this brand.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-06
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG9DR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Driving down the road at aproximately 40 mph and van shuts down. I turned on the hazard lights, coasted to the side of the road, put the van in park, turned the key to the off position waited about 30 seconds then turned key to on and the van starts up and seems to run fine. This is the second time in two days this has happened. No warning, no check engine lights. Very dangerous when driving at any speed when suddenly your vehicle turns itself off. Will contact my mechanic today to see if he has info on this problem. While doing research I have found that this is a problem that has been reported for many years and has been investigated. Wondering why they have not issued a recall for this????
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-31
- VIN: 2C4RDGBGXDR
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: While I was driving, the passenger seat headrest exploded forward. Chrysler calls this the "Front Seat Active Head Restraint." This is a safety mechanism supposed to be triggered in a crash, but the plastic holding back the force of the strong springs gave out and the plastic broke. This is a known issue that has caused others concussions, neck injuries, etc. As of yet the person who was sitting in the seat has not shown adverse symptoms, but his safety was put at risk. Chrysler is aware of this issue and had sent out a letter extending the warranty to 10 years, but this vehicle is just past the 10-year mark. No dealer, police, or insurance representatives have inspected this specific incident. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to failure.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-17
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG1DR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: It is unknown at this time what is wrong with the vehicle. The problem started two weeks ago. Initially after driving sustained highway speeds, the van will hesitate to brake when driving through town. When approaching a stop it would stutter to a stop and then stutter to drive again when pressing the gas, the delay was about 2-3 seconds. In two weeks time with approximately 200 miles driven, it started stalling at stops. Once at a traffic light and also at a stop sign. These incidents happened in the same day and since then, it had not been driven due to it being a major safety concern. It has been taken to an auto shop that has run the full diagnostics on it and the computer system is not catching any issues, there are no lights are on the dash. After the engine stalls, it runs if it is turned off and back on again. The brakes, rotors, and tires were replaced when I started noticing that there was an issue with stopping, I figured the problem was that they needed replaced since I have owned the vehicle 2 years and it hadn’t been done since I purchased the van. March 17 was the date it stalled twice and it was the only time the engine stalled in the past two weeks.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-31
- VIN: 2C4RDGBGXDR

Engine off and brake lights off. Later the brake lights turns on when engine off and nobody in the car. Replaced brake pedal assembly and still same problem. Is this a common problem with Dodge Grand Caravans? Mine is 2013 model.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-03
- VIN: 2C4RDGBG8DR
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: The driver side headrest was deployed (I was heading to work when I opened the door to get in the van, I noticed the headrest was deployed). The vehicle was parked in my driveway all night and had not been in any type of accident. It is available to be inspected. Had I been driving when it deployed, there’s a strong possibility it would have caused an unsafe driving condition and/or an accident. I have searched for a recall, but there isn’t one. However, other Dodge caravan drivers have reported similar incidents with their headrest deploying for no reason. The component has not been inspected yet, as it occurred just today. No warning lights or signs were present before the deployment (the night before when I parked it).
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-12
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG6DR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-19
- VIN: 2C4RDGBGXDR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: While driving on expressways vehicle will suddenly lose all power. making it difficult to get to vehicle off the road. this has occurred 5 times in the past year, most recently 09/192023, all times with adults and children in car. One of the incidents, I was unable to get off road as was in a construction zone with no shoulder, so had to sit in lane with oncoming traffic and was very fortunate not to have been rear ended and hit. This is a major safety issue. No warning lights, no symptoms prior to each occurrence, vehicle just dies. Once completely stopped, try to start vehicle and it just rumbles and then dies. Wait 30 minutes, then vehicle will start up and run normally until next incident. Have taken vehicle to 2 different mechanics with no solution and no diagnosis as there are no engine error codes reported.

- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Ignition problems the vehicle would not start I had to have roadside come jump my vehicle off. After letting the vehicle run for about 30 minutes I shut it off and waited a minute and it started up fine. After about 3 hours of sitting I went out to the vehicle and it wouldn't start. I had to put It in neutral and it tried starting until it ran out. After turning the wheel and playing with the key it finally cranked over. I know there have been recalls regarding the tpim. It is available for inspection upon request.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-08-28
- VIN: 2C4RDGCG1DR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS

The contact stated that power steering and the brakes failed to function. The contact coasted to a parking lot and was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The contact stated that the failure had become a recurring failure. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V373000 (Electrical System, Air Bags). The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-11
- VIN: 2C4RDGBG4DR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan side door locks malfunctioned. While they were unlocked one side would not open causing potential safety concern if in an accident. The other side would not lock even when lock is activated. I took the door panels off and was able to free the stuck lock but now both door actuators make a buzzing sound and i am afraid of failure again. I also sometimes transport my elderly parents who would have difficulty getting out if it malfunctioned. I have not taken to a shop yet but will have to get it fixed. There is a 15 year 150,000 mile warranty extension on the 2015-2017 years but not prior with same actuator. My vehicle only has 140,000 miles and should be covered but is not. There were no signs of the issue before it happened.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-09
- VIN: 2C4RDGBG0DR
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: The driver's seat headrest came apart like it is supposed to in the event of an accident. However, my vehicle was not in an accident; it was sitting in the driveway. The plastic tabs that hold the headrest together broke apart. It is available for inspection. If this had happened while driving, my head would have been hit and pushed forward suddenly, which could have resulted in an accident/loss of control. This has been a problem on different models, and extended warranties have been offered. However, the dealership says mine is not one of the covered vehicles.

I just bought a 2012 Crew in Black. It has so many features and great details! How awesome is the sliding door windows rolling down like a car? Satellite radio free for a year, cool! All power, including the 2 rear doors. And my wife swore she would never drive a van, but I bought this for her and she willingly traded in her SUV.
-
I bought this van 2 months ago and it has been fantastic so far. Although I never thought I would own a van at the age of 29, it was necessary with the kids and the dog. The van looks great, both inside and out, and is definitely better than other minivans in its class. We test drove the Dodge, Toyota, and Honda minivans, and didn't notice much of a difference in ride quality. However, the Toyota may have been a little smoother, but that could be because I read the reviews ahead of time and expected it. This van is amazing, and a comparable Honda or Toyota with all the same features would cost about $7K or $8K more (the Toyota salesman even acknowledged that).
-
We've been driving the SXT van for a month now, including a 2000-mile trip, and it has been fantastic! We were able to achieve 28mpg on the highway (both according to the dash display and by calculation at fill-up), and 18-20 in town. The van offers great comfort and flexible space, making it an excellent choice. It's also a pleasure to drive, with good steering feel and not too 'floaty' over bumps. The pentastar engine provides strong power, making it an all-around great vehicle. I would definitely buy another one without hesitation.
-
Great price for this van! It's got a comfortable ride and handling. So far, reliability has been good - I've put 9,900 miles on the van and haven't had any problems.
-
Congratulations on your first minivan purchase! It can be a big change from SUVs, but it sounds like you made the right decision. I'm glad to hear that the 3.6l engine is performing well in all vehicles, and the top loading oil filter is a genius engineering feature that makes your life in the garage much easier. It's great to hear that every part of the vehicle has received the same level of attention and brilliance. With 26k on the odometer and zero problems, it's clear that this is an amazing family vehicle. Compared to its competitors, it's the most comfortable and functional option. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I recently owned a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE model (flex fuel) with a 3.6 V6 (Pentastar) engine. When I first got it with 122,000 miles, I was really excited about it. However, after a week of ownership, the check engine light came on for a thermostat code. I didn't think it was a big deal since it was a used car. I replaced the thermostat and it was fine for another 2 months. Unfortunately, the check engine light came on again for cam position sensor/crank position sensor correlation. I took it to the shop and they said it needed new cam position sensors. After replacing those, it was fine for a month. But then, one day, the van died when I came to a stop sign. I restarted it and took it to the shop again. They found a pending code for cam position/crank position and a random multiple cylinder misfire. They concluded that it needed either a new timing chain or cam phasers. I decided to get a second opinion from the dealership. In the midst of all this, the van started to shutter when coming to stops. The dealership found metal shavings in the transmission and told me it needed to be replaced. They also found that the timing chains were bad. I decided to take the transmission pan off to see if there really were metal shavings in the transmission, and unfortunately, there were. At that point, I decided to sell the van back to where I got it from. Maybe my van was just a lemon? I'll never know, because I would never buy another one. Although the styling is awesome along with the sto n go seats, I wouldn't recommend this van if you're looking for reliability.

I purchased my 2012 Grand Caravan with just over 100k miles on it. It was a great van for the first year I owned it, taking me from Ohio to Gatlinburg and back with no issues. However, after the first year, I experienced some problems. The rear brakes failed and I had to replace the rotors, pads, and calipers. Additionally, the alternator failed and the engine developed a ticking sound. Although the alternator had been replaced twice by the previous owner, I had to replace it again just six months after purchasing the vehicle. I also had to replace the front calipers, rotors, and pads. The TIPM started to fail as well, and the fuel pump relay went bad. Although a new TIPM would have cost me $1200, I was able to bypass it. Unfortunately, at 146k miles, the engine blew. Despite having done regular oil changes and never seeing an oil leak, the core design was faulty. I have decided not to purchase another Chrysler vehicle.

I recently rented a car for 8 days and drove 1500 miles. Unfortunately, the car I received did not meet my expectations. Compared to my 1993 Chevy Lumina APV anteater, this car was extremely poor in many respects. The transmission was constantly in the wrong gear and would not downshift when trying to accelerate, causing the car to jerk and suddenly shift 3 gears, overrevving the engine. Additionally, the throttle response was jerky, causing the tires to chirp at any sharp intersection, even at slow speeds. To make matters worse, the instrument panel lights were misleading, making me think the headlights were on when they were not. Although there was an 'Econ' button, I could never tell what it did since it did not seem to affect the car's performance. Lastly, the button to turn off stability control was located at the bottom right of the instrument panel, making it easily accessible to children. Overall, I was disappointed with the car I rented.

I purchased a used vehicle with 120K miles and unfortunately experienced several issues with it. Despite my efforts to fix the problems, I continued to receive error codes. I replaced the gasoline evaporator which temporarily resolved one of the codes, but another one appeared shortly after. I then had to replace the bank 2 O2 sensors to clear 7 codes. Additionally, I had to address an oil and coolant leak by changing the oil coolant filter housing. Unfortunately, even after all of these repairs, I was still unable to fix the P219B code and ultimately had to sell the vehicle. Lots of features for the money. The vehicle rides well and has good gas mileage for its size. It also boasts good power and acceleration.
