Common 2013 Dodge Grand caravan problems

The Dodge Grand Caravan, a popular minivan, has been known to have several common problems across various model years. In the 2013 model, owners have reported issues with the engine failing to start, worn-out brakes, and transmission failures.

  1. Engine failing to start: This issue is often caused by a failing Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which is common in many Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler vehicles. Replacing the TIPM costs around $1,200.
  2. Worn-out brakes: Brake pads and rotors wear out faster than on other minivans, requiring replacement around 40,000 miles. This service costs around $700, depending on local labor rates.
  3. Transmission failures: Parts in the transmission break down as the van ages, leading to failure around 70,000 miles. Replacing the transmission and torque converter is costly, with an average price of nearly $4,000.

In addition to these issues, the 2013 Grand Caravan has a lower-than-average owner satisfaction score and higher-than-average annual maintenance costs.

For the 2011 model, the most commonly reported problem is with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). This electrical issue can cause the minivan to have difficulty starting, windows and doors to open randomly, or the vehicle to crank but not start. Despite the widespread problem, Dodge has not issued a recall to fix the TIPM issue in this model year.

In the 2009 model, engine problems have been reported, with many owners experiencing abrupt engine stalling while driving. This issue is often accompanied by the traction control light displaying and a loss of power steering. Excessive oil consumption and the check engine light turning on are also prevalent. Dodge fixed this problem by issuing a recall on 2009 Dodge Grand Caravans.

In summary, the Dodge Grand Caravan has common problems across various model years, including issues with the engine, transmission, and TIPM. These issues can lead to expensive repairs and negatively impact owner satisfaction.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
  • VIN: 2C4RDGCG0DR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving our key in the ignition will loosen to the left and completely shut off all electrical for the car. The first time this occurred we were driving 55mph on the highway and had to safely steer off of three lanes of traffic with our kids in the backseat, at the time we thought it was a fluke. Now this is happening more frequently. It is the exact same issue listed under recall L25 “the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.”

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
  • VIN: 2C4RDGCG1DR
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Active front seat headrests deployed without an accident for the second time. Had them replaced and paid for myself the first time years ago. Was compensated by FCA as part of special coverage after the fact. When they deployed again I brought it in and had it diagnosed at Hopkins dodge, it was covered under the special policy. They ordered parts. It took forever for the parts to come off back order. They just arrived in August 2024, I verified with their parts department. I am now told that I am out of the special coverage window and they won’t cover unless I pay the dealership over $200 to diagnose the same problem again. It has not changed. They already said it was covered and now they are trying to back out because it took forever for them to supply the required parts. I need this repaired like they said they would two years ago when I got it first diagnosed and the parts ordered.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
  • VIN: 2C4RDGBGXDR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: this is the third time i am filing a complaint. My 2013 dodge grand caravan completely dies and looses all power going over 50 miles per hour. no warning, no codes appear, nothing. looses all power, power steering, brakes, etc. have to get to side of road, wait 20 minutes, then car will start. this has happened now over 16 times. The latest time with my grandchild in the car, the vehicle behind me almost crashed into me. this continues to be a safety issue and it is unclear as to why dodge is doing nothing about this despite multiple complaints by hundreds of drivers. I have spent over $3000 so far trying to fix this to no avail, new battery, fuel pump, fuel filter, TPM relay, new keys, new programming, still happens. will never buy another dodge/chrysler again, and have told family and friends the same potential hazard of this brand.

  • VIN: 2C4RDGCG9DR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: Driving down the road at aproximately 40 mph and van shuts down. I turned on the hazard lights, coasted to the side of the road, put the van in park, turned the key to the off position waited about 30 seconds then turned key to on and the van starts up and seems to run fine. This is the second time in two days this has happened. No warning, no check engine lights. Very dangerous when driving at any speed when suddenly your vehicle turns itself off. Will contact my mechanic today to see if he has info on this problem. While doing research I have found that this is a problem that has been reported for many years and has been investigated. Wondering why they have not issued a recall for this????

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-31
  • VIN: 2C4RDGBGXDR
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: While I was driving, the passenger seat headrest exploded forward. Chrysler calls this the "Front Seat Active Head Restraint." This is a safety mechanism supposed to be triggered in a crash, but the plastic holding back the force of the strong springs gave out and the plastic broke. This is a known issue that has caused others concussions, neck injuries, etc. As of yet the person who was sitting in the seat has not shown adverse symptoms, but his safety was put at risk. Chrysler is aware of this issue and had sent out a letter extending the warranty to 10 years, but this vehicle is just past the 10-year mark. No dealer, police, or insurance representatives have inspected this specific incident. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to failure.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-17
  • VIN: 2C4RDGCG1DR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: It is unknown at this time what is wrong with the vehicle. The problem started two weeks ago. Initially after driving sustained highway speeds, the van will hesitate to brake when driving through town. When approaching a stop it would stutter to a stop and then stutter to drive again when pressing the gas, the delay was about 2-3 seconds. In two weeks time with approximately 200 miles driven, it started stalling at stops. Once at a traffic light and also at a stop sign. These incidents happened in the same day and since then, it had not been driven due to it being a major safety concern. It has been taken to an auto shop that has run the full diagnostics on it and the computer system is not catching any issues, there are no lights are on the dash. After the engine stalls, it runs if it is turned off and back on again. The brakes, rotors, and tires were replaced when I started noticing that there was an issue with stopping, I figured the problem was that they needed replaced since I have owned the vehicle 2 years and it hadn’t been done since I purchased the van. March 17 was the date it stalled twice and it was the only time the engine stalled in the past two weeks.

Engine off and brake lights off. Later the brake lights turns on when engine off and nobody in the car. Replaced brake pedal assembly and still same problem. Is this a common problem with Dodge Grand Caravans? Mine is 2013 model.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-03
  • VIN: 2C4RDGBG8DR
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: The driver side headrest was deployed (I was heading to work when I opened the door to get in the van, I noticed the headrest was deployed). The vehicle was parked in my driveway all night and had not been in any type of accident. It is available to be inspected. Had I been driving when it deployed, there’s a strong possibility it would have caused an unsafe driving condition and/or an accident. I have searched for a recall, but there isn’t one. However, other Dodge caravan drivers have reported similar incidents with their headrest deploying for no reason. The component has not been inspected yet, as it occurred just today. No warning lights or signs were present before the deployment (the night before when I parked it).

  • VIN: 2C4RDGBGXDR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving on expressways vehicle will suddenly lose all power. making it difficult to get to vehicle off the road. this has occurred 5 times in the past year, most recently 09/192023, all times with adults and children in car. One of the incidents, I was unable to get off road as was in a construction zone with no shoulder, so had to sit in lane with oncoming traffic and was very fortunate not to have been rear ended and hit. This is a major safety issue. No warning lights, no symptoms prior to each occurrence, vehicle just dies. Once completely stopped, try to start vehicle and it just rumbles and then dies. Wait 30 minutes, then vehicle will start up and run normally until next incident. Have taken vehicle to 2 different mechanics with no solution and no diagnosis as there are no engine error codes reported.

  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Ignition problems the vehicle would not start I had to have roadside come jump my vehicle off. After letting the vehicle run for about 30 minutes I shut it off and waited a minute and it started up fine. After about 3 hours of sitting I went out to the vehicle and it wouldn't start. I had to put It in neutral and it tried starting until it ran out. After turning the wheel and playing with the key it finally cranked over. I know there have been recalls regarding the tpim. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-11
  • VIN: 2C4RDGBG4DR
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan side door locks malfunctioned. While they were unlocked one side would not open causing potential safety concern if in an accident. The other side would not lock even when lock is activated. I took the door panels off and was able to free the stuck lock but now both door actuators make a buzzing sound and i am afraid of failure again. I also sometimes transport my elderly parents who would have difficulty getting out if it malfunctioned. I have not taken to a shop yet but will have to get it fixed. There is a 15 year 150,000 mile warranty extension on the 2015-2017 years but not prior with same actuator. My vehicle only has 140,000 miles and should be covered but is not. There were no signs of the issue before it happened.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-09
  • VIN: 2C4RDGBG0DR

  • Summary: The driver's seat headrest came apart like it is supposed to in the event of an accident. However, my vehicle was not in an accident; it was sitting in the driveway. The plastic tabs that hold the headrest together broke apart. It is available for inspection. If this had happened while driving, my head would have been hit and pushed forward suddenly, which could have resulted in an accident/loss of control. This has been a problem on different models, and extended warranties have been offered. However, the dealership says mine is not one of the covered vehicles.

Negative 2013 Dodge Grand caravan car reviews

  1. Joany Mraz 2025-02-11

Congratulations on your new purchase! I hope you enjoy your 2012 Grand Caravan SXT with 36k miles. Although you haven't had it for long, it's great to hear that you're impressed with the seating, which has improved significantly since the previous Stow'n'Go model. The DOHC variable-valve-timing engine is also a standout feature, providing both power and efficiency. It's understandable that you may have some concerns about its long-term reliability, but I'm sure you'll be able to enjoy it for many years to come. The handling is also very good, with a suspension that strikes a balance between sporty and comfortable. While the power doors and key-in-fob arrangement may not be for everyone, it's great to have those options available. Overall, it sounds like you have a lot of clever features to explore inside your new vehicle!

  2. Ansel Gleason 2025-01-17

I have owned this vehicle for 2 years since it was new and have driven it for 35,000 miles. Unfortunately, the dealer sales-lady misled us about the UConnect and rebate for multi-vehicle purchase, and we were not reimbursed. Despite driving to Florida from Michigan twice, I did not use the cruise control, so I cannot comment on that. However, I did experience a hard shift when first taking off. In the past, I have owned a '94 Voyager minivan, '03 Intrepid and '98 Sebring convertible, and I must say that this vehicle has more design problems than the older ones I owned. I had the transmission reprogrammed, but it still performs poorly (even after 3 Chrysler quality engineers rode with me and said this is normal operation for this vehicle). Additionally, I experienced a wind shear problem and the heater blower motor only has low speeds. Lastly, the original tires only lasted 25,000 miles before losing traction in snow.

  3. George Toy 2025-01-03

I recently owned a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE model (flex fuel) with a 3.6 V6 (Pentastar) engine. When I first got it with 122,000 miles, I was really excited about it. However, after a week of ownership, the check engine light came on for a thermostat code. I didn't think it was a big deal since it was a used car. I replaced the thermostat and it was fine for another 2 months. Unfortunately, the check engine light came on again for cam position sensor/crank position sensor correlation. I took it to the shop and they said it needed new cam position sensors. After replacing those, it was fine for a month. But then, one day, the van died when I came to a stop sign. I restarted it and took it to the shop again. They found a pending code for cam position/crank position and a random multiple cylinder misfire. They concluded that it needed either a new timing chain or cam phasers. I decided to get a second opinion from the dealership. In the midst of all this, the van started to shutter when coming to stops. The dealership found metal shavings in the transmission and told me it needed to be replaced. They also found that the timing chains were bad. I decided to take the transmission pan off to see if there really were metal shavings in the transmission, and unfortunately, there were. At that point, I decided to sell the van back to where I got it from. Maybe my van was just a lemon? I'll never know, because I would never buy another one. Although the styling is awesome along with the sto n go seats, I wouldn't recommend this van if you're looking for reliability.

  4. Tavares Conroy 2024-11-15

I purchased my 2012 Grand Caravan with just over 100k miles on it. It was a great van for the first year I owned it, taking me from Ohio to Gatlinburg and back with no issues. However, after the first year, I experienced some problems. The rear brakes failed and I had to replace the rotors, pads, and calipers. Additionally, the alternator failed and the engine developed a ticking sound. Although the alternator had been replaced twice by the previous owner, I had to replace it again just six months after purchasing the vehicle. I also had to replace the front calipers, rotors, and pads. The TIPM started to fail as well, and the fuel pump relay went bad. Although a new TIPM would have cost me $1200, I was able to bypass it. Unfortunately, at 146k miles, the engine blew. Despite having done regular oil changes and never seeing an oil leak, the core design was faulty. I have decided not to purchase another Chrysler vehicle.

  5. Monserrat Schowalter 2024-10-15

I recently rented a car for 8 days and drove 1500 miles. Unfortunately, the car I received did not meet my expectations. Compared to my 1993 Chevy Lumina APV anteater, this car was extremely poor in many respects. The transmission was constantly in the wrong gear and would not downshift when trying to accelerate, causing the car to jerk and suddenly shift 3 gears, overrevving the engine. Additionally, the throttle response was jerky, causing the tires to chirp at any sharp intersection, even at slow speeds. To make matters worse, the instrument panel lights were misleading, making me think the headlights were on when they were not. Although there was an 'Econ' button, I could never tell what it did since it did not seem to affect the car's performance. Lastly, the button to turn off stability control was located at the bottom right of the instrument panel, making it easily accessible to children. Overall, I was disappointed with the car I rented.

Positive 2013 Dodge Grand caravan car reviews

I purchased a 2013 Grand Caravan SXT with about 10,000 miles on it. In my opinion, any minivan without some version of Stow&Go is not worth considering. I frequently fold down the second row seats and I wouldn't want to have to remove them to free up space. This would leave me unable to haul passengers in that area. On the plus side, the car has great power and good gas mileage. I get 27 miles per gallon at 70-75 mph (although town mileage is not great). The ride is quiet and smooth, and it was much less expensive to buy than a Honda or Toyota. However, there are a few things I dislike. The 6-speed transmission is okay, but not as smooth or predictable as it could be. The driver's seat needs more rearward travel as legroom is limited. Despite these issues, I still love the car. At 60,000 miles, I did have some problems with the transmission and rear shocks. The dealer replaced the shocks twice at no cost to me, and the transmission was rebuilt once. Although it shifts decently now, it's still not great and I hope to have it reprogrammed again soon. As of August 2016, I have 69,000 miles on the car and I would absolutely love it if it weren't for the transmission. It's a real pain and I'll probably have to pay to have it reprogrammed every 15-20K miles. However, the car has been very dependable and inexpensive to maintain. I finally cured the rear shock noise by installing Monroe shocks at my own expense after the warranty ended. To date, the only out of pocket repair cost has been for one set of tires and oil changes. Although I am still not satisfied with the transmission behavior, it has remained reasonably good (maybe 6 on a 1-10 scale) after the last reprogramming just before the warranty ended. At 103,000 miles, just out of warranty, I did experience a couple of issues. One was a failed oxygen sensor, which is not unusual at this mileage. The other was a door lock actuator for one of the sliding doors, which still works to lock/unlock that door (usually; it has stuck a couple of times such that the door won't unlock), but makes a buzzing or grinding noise that is annoying. Unfortunately, the cost to fix is $1000. However, after checking the cost of the part and observing the difficulty of the fix via YouTube, I realized that it was not as crazy as I initially thought. The body remains tight and rattle-free, and the interior is holding up well.

I love driving my Dodge Caravan, so I decided to buy one. Although there have been some concerns about the six-speed transmission, I rented an SXT model to haul film lighting and found that it was much more affordable than an SUV. While the transmission can be sensitive, it's easy to understand and the six-speed design allows for great fuel efficiency whether you're driving through hilly terrain or cruising on the highway. Even when carrying a ton of cargo, the Caravan drives smoothly as long as you know how to shift properly. The shifter is conveniently located next to the speedometer, making it easy to use. I was impressed with how well it performed on hairpin turns at an altitude of 10,500 feet above sea level. With its spacious interior, stow n go feature, multiple 12V inputs, wide wheelbase, and 5-star rating, the Dodge Caravan is an excellent choice for anyone in need of a reliable and versatile vehicle.

There's no such thing as the perfect vehicle, but the 2013 Grand Caravan offers reliability, practicality, and value in a moderately priced minivan. I've personally driven this van for over 68,000 miles without any problems.

I don't know why people complain about this van. Ours has 54,000 miles and we have never had a single problem besides the brakes squealing. We put better quality rotors on it and they have not squealed since. It has plenty of power and we think it's very comfortable. All around, it's a great van!

I've owned various makes of vehicles over the past 60 years, including Toyota's and Honda's. However, our first Chrysler vehicle, the 2013 Dodge Caravan 'Crew' Canadian model, has been a great purchase. We bought it new in 2013 for $27K and it has had no problems in 10 years. The van's excellent 283 HP V-6 still gets 35 MPG at 55 MPH (which translates to 28 MPG on the 20% smaller USA gallon). This van was $10,000 less than Toyota and Honda's with the same options, and it's built in Windsor Ontario, which means its quality is good, including an excellent paint job. Even in 2020, this model still looked the same, so my 2013 van, which I wax every year, still looks new. The seats are supportive and comfortable, and with the Stow & Go seats, I can get a 4X8 plywood sheet in the back. The original brakes and tires lasted approximately 40,000 miles, after which I upgraded to better tires. I change the oil and filter every 4,000 miles (7000 KM), and the engine burns only 1/4 qt. in that distance. The suspension is stiff, which gives a rougher ride compared to Toyota and Honda vans. The older generation Dodge/Chrysler vans (pre-2012) had weak transmissions and A/C, but this van has had no problems at all. In Canada, this van outsells all other van makes combined, and a well-maintained one like ours would be a good used van buy. *The Grand Caravan was discontinued in 2021 and replaced with the Pacifica van that has the same excellent engine but costs $15+K more! I'm surprised at how good this van still is, and its dark blue color with alloy wheels and chrome side trim and roof rack still gets good comments.
