Common 2003 Dodge Grand caravan problems

The 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan is known for several common problems, primarily related to the engine, transmission, and electrical systems. Here's a detailed analysis of these problems based on complaints from owners:

  • Power Door Lock Failure: Power door lock failure is among the most reported problems for the 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan. This issue is often attributed to a faulty key and internal switch, causing the door locks to malfunction. Drivers report that a beep confirms that their doors are locked before driving, but upon checking later, they often find their doors unlocked.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a common problem for the 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan. Some owners have reported that their van would jerk, lurch, and eventually stop due to transmission oil pump malfunction. This loss of hydraulic pressure results in the loss of power to the wheels, rendering the vehicle immobile.
  • Electrical Problems: Electrical problems are a widespread issue for the 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan, with 41 complaints in total. These issues range from power steering failure to various problems with the powertrain, including slipped serpentine belts and hard shifting. While no single issue has occurred frequently enough to generate a recall, these electrical problems can significantly impact the vehicle's reliability and functionality.
  • Front Brakes: Early in the vehicle's life, there was an issue with the front brakes either locking up or failing to engage entirely. While this issue has been resolved in more recent models, it's still worth checking the brakes on a test drive, as it can be potentially severe.

In summary, the 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan has several common problems related to the engine, transmission, and electrical systems. While these issues can impact the vehicle's reliability and functionality, many can be resolved with proper maintenance and repairs.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-11-12
  • VIN: 2D4GT44L03R
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THERE ARE TWO PROBLEMS THAT ARE VERY SERIOUS. FIRST, IN 2017 AS I WAS EXITING THE INTERSTATE, I DROVE THROUGH A PUDDLE. AS I ATTEMPTED TO TURN LEFT ONTO THE ROAD, MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND IT WAS ONLY WITH EXTREME FORCE AND SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES THAT I KEPT FROM RUNNING THROUGH THE GUARDRAIL, AND DROPPING DOWN TO THE INTERSTATE BELOW. I WAS UNABLE TO MAKE THE TURN AND STOPPED ON THE OVERPASS UNTIL MY STEERING WHEEL UNLOCKED. YES, MY ENGINEER HUSBAND KEEPS UP WITH ALL OF OUR REGULAR MAINTENANCE, INCLUDING THE BELTS. NEXT, WITH AN UNUSUALLY HEAVY RAIN THIS PAST WEEK, MY BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER PARKING FOR AN HOUR, MY STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT TURN WHEN I ATTEMPTED GO AGAIN. I RESTARTED THE CAR FIVE TIMES BEFORE THE STEERING UNLOCKED. ALL WEEK, DURING THAT HEAVY RAIN, THE STEERING LOCKED REGULARLY. THESE PROBLEMS ARE ALL OVER THE WEB. WOMEN AND CHILDREN EVERYWHERE ARE IN DANGER OF DYING FROM SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED YEARS AGO. WHY IS THERE NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM? IF YOU ARE REFUSING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS, THEN YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR BEING SUED ALONG WITH CHRYSLER, FOR ALLOWING THIS TO CONTINUE UNCORRECTED.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-11-29
  • VIN: 1D4GP243X3B
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT WARNING LIGHT TURNS ON EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO ONE IN THAT SEAT AND THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT RELEASES WHEN THERE IS SOMEONE IN THE SEAT! ADULTS AND OLDER CHILDREN HAVE PUT THE SEAT BELT IN PLACE BUT THE WARNING LIGHT STAYS ON. WHILE DRIVING OR SITTING STILL, THE SEAT BELT WILL RELEASE AT RANDOM, CAUSING THE PASSENGER TO HAVE TO CLICK IT INTO PLACE AGAIN. WHEN THE PASSENGER CLICKS THE SEAT BELT IN PLACE AND PULLS ON IT, IT EITHER STAYS IN POSITION OR RELEASES. IF IT STAYS IN POSITION, THEN WHILE DRIVING AND OR PARKED, THE SEAT BELT WILL SUDDENLY RELEASE. WHEN THE DRIVER HAD TO STEP HARDER ON THE BRAKE TO AVOID A DRIVER WHO STOPPED SUDDENLY, THE SEAT BELT RELEASED YET AT OTHER TIMES, THE SEAT BELT REMAINS IN PLACE. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHETHER OR NOT THE VAN IS IN GEAR OR PARKED, OR IF WE'RE STOPPED, MOVING, HIGHWAY DRIVING OR CITY DRIVING, THE SEAT BELT WILL RELEASE AT RANDOM TIMES. THIS HAD HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE, SOMETIMES MULTIPLE TIMES IN ONE TRIP. OTHER TIMES IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AT ALL. THE DATE GIVEN IS THE MOST RECENT TIME THAT IT RELEASED ON ITS OWN. I HAD BEEN PARKED AND THEN WAS BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE WHEN MY DAUGHTER'S SEAT BELT (PASSENGER SIDE) RELEASED ON ITS OWN. I STOPPED AND PUT THE VAN IN PARK THEN HAD HER CLICK IN PLACE AGAIN. WE BOTH PULLED ON IT AND SINCE IT DIDN'T RELEASE, WE CONTINUED OUR TRIP, PRAYING THAT IT WOULDN'T DISCONNECT AGAIN WHILE WE WERE DRIVING.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-03-17
  • VIN: 2D8GT44L73R
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: DURING A MARCH 2016 ROAD TRIP TO ATLANTA, GA, FROM MICHIGAN, WHILE TRAVELING ABOUT 65 MPH ON I-75, TEMPERATURE GAUGE NEEDLE BEGAN TO CLIMB TOWARD THE RED ZONE ON THE INSTRUMENT DIAL. WITHIN MINUTES I PULLED OFF ONTO A HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION SITE WHERE I STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION SWITCH. OPENING THE HOOD, I BEGAN TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM(S). COOL UPPER RADIATOR HOSE. COOL RADIATOR CAP. TURNED CAP OFF AND DISCOVERED NO COOLANT IN RADIATOR. NO APPARENT SOURCE OF LEAKING. ADDED ICE WATER FROM ICE CHEST TO RADIATOR HOPING TO LOCATE SOURCE OF LEAK. TURNED ENGINE ON AND LOCATED LEAK BENEATH PASSENGER SIDE OF VEHICLE: TWO SMALL HOLES IN CORRODED EXPOSED STEEL TUBING ROUTING COOLANT TO REAR HEATER ASSEMBLY IN REAR OF VAN. THE NEXT DAY DISCOVERED THAT CHRYSLER HAD CHANGED THE PART FROM STEEL TO ALUMINUM IN LATE 2000'S TO HELP PREVENT THE CORROSIVE ACTION OF ROAD SALT IN THE NORTHERN CLIMATES THAT HAD AFFECTED MANY SIMILAR VEHICLES DURING THE MID-2000'S. HOWEVER, DAIMLER CHRYSLER CHOSE NOT TO INSTITUTE A RECALL OF THE FAULTY DESIGNED PART FULLY EXPOSED BENEATH THE VEHICLE. THE COST OF REPLACING THE PART AT THE DEALERSHIP IN STONE MOUNTAIN, GA, WAS AROUND $650.00 USD, NOT A HUGE SUM, BUT OBVIOUSLY NOT COST-EFFICIENT FOR THE AUTOMAKER AND ITS SHAREHOLDERS. THIS PROBLEM COULD BE LIFE-THREATENING IF THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS WERE STRANDED DURING THE WINTER MONTHS IN NORTHERN U.S. OR CANADA, WHEN LOSS OF ALL COOLANT OCCURRED. OPERATING VEHICLE WITH NO COOLANT COULD RESULT IN THE ENGINE SEIZING UP WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, CAUSING INJURY TO DRIVER AND PASSENGERS AND POSSIBLY OTHER MOTORISTS. A DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT CHRYSLER HAS CORRECTED ON ITS LATER MODEL VEHICLES SINCE 2010 OR 2011.

Negative 2003 Dodge Grand caravan car reviews

  1. Nathen Stamm 2024-11-22

We purchased this car used with 26k miles and had no major issues for the first 12 months. However, we have had to take it to the shop several times for minor issues since then, such as a broken windshield washer pump, power locks on the rear doors, and rear washer. Additionally, the A/C leaked on the floorboards and the brake system has not been reliable. Despite regular oil changes every 3,000 miles, we have had to do an engine system flush due to sludge build-up every other time. The power steering also binds. Overall, while we have not experienced any major problems with the engine, it has been frustrating to have to bring the van in for repairs so frequently.

  2. Jarrod Goldner 2024-09-20

I have experienced persistent issues with this van since the day of purchase. Despite multiple visits to the service bay, the problem has not been resolved. The salesmen and mechanics have been unhelpful and unprofessional, with sarcastic remarks being made. Regrettably, this experience has led me to the decision to not purchase another Dodge. As a family, we have always owned foreign cars and this experience has reinforced our preference.

We bought the car at 22K miles (used) and it has now reached 66K miles. On our way home after the purchase, we noticed a transmission shudder on the 1-2 upshift. We have learned to avoid the 1800-1900rpm 1-2 upshift (at least 2000rpm). The dealership replaced the solenoid at 52K miles because the transmission was leaking fluid in the garage. Overall, the transmission is very delicate, so we do not tow/haul 7 passengers at all. We recommend checking/topping up the power steering fluid often, or else it will scream. At 50K miles, we had to replace the links/bushings, and at 60K miles, we replaced the tie rods. Sometimes, the e-brake may not release, causing the rear discs to drag. If this happens, pump the brakes or work the release handle.

You've owned this car for just about 2 1/2 years and for the most part, it's great! You've had very few minor problems and the dealership helped correct each one. The car is roomy and has a nice design. The only downside is that the front seats are uncomfortable, but the back seats are wonderful! Additionally, the traction and braking in bad weather (rain/snow) could be improved. Despite that, it's still a good car.

Finally, after coming to terms with the reality of getting older, we decided to purchase a minivan. We test drove several models including the Town and Country, Odyssey, Sienna, and MPV, but ultimately decided that the Dodge GC offered the best value for our money. It's definitely the sportiest looking of all the minivans! The 3.8L engine provides good power, and we noticed a noticeable difference from the 3.3L. The interior size is great, and we were able to purchase an extended 70K bumper-to-bumper warranty at a cheap price since it already carries a 70K powertrain warranty, which made it even more attractive. We can't wait to take a long family drive!

Great ride! The power is impressive and there's plenty of room. Plus, it's super reliable.

  4. Scotty Hill 2024-08-22

By far the best minivan available on the market today! AWD gives you the peace of mind and safety to get through unexpected storms that pop up in the Poconos. The DVD player is a hit with the kids and the Quad seating is a favorite of Mom's, ensuring that the kids aren't on top of one another. This is actually the 3rd Dodge Grand Caravan we've owned and we'll never buy another brand.

The ride is quiet at all speeds and I found that it had the best brakes out of all the vehicles I tested (all with disks) even with a full load of seven passengers. The power side and rear doors work great and are a definite plus. The only issue I had, being over 70 years old, was that the seats are heavy to remove, but they are very comfortable. On the highway, the mileage stays steady at 23 miles per gallon when driving at 70 mph.
