Bmw X5 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. At launch, it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.

BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. The X5 signaled a shift away from the utilisation of body-on-frame construction, in favour of more modern monocoque chassis construction. Although the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was introduced more than a year prior to the X5, the X5 was the first to utilise a monocoque chassis. The M-Class used body-on-frame construction until its second generation.

The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.

The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2007 BMW X5, which I purchased less than a year ago. As someone who has always heard great things about BMW, I was excited to own my first luxury vehicle. Unfortunately, within the first year of ownership, I've had to spend quite a bit of time in the BMW Service Department for some major repairs. They've had to replace the transmission, radiator, solenoid valve twice, and the latch on the third seat broke off completely. I also had to get a brake fluid flush, and I'm heading back into the service department this week because the CEL is on again for the third time in seven weeks. While I'm disappointed with these issues, I'm hopeful that the service department will be able to resolve them. I'm still a fan of BMW, but I would recommend doing some research before making a purchase. Thank you for listening to my experience!

I have owned this vehicle for 14 months and unfortunately, it has been on a flatbed truck FOUR times. I experienced a thermostat failure which caused the car to shut down while I was driving on the parkway, leaving me stuck for 3 hours. Additionally, the brakes seized and calipers would not free the front wheels, leaving me stuck for 2 hours. On another occasion, the coolant reservoir exploded, causing coolant to spill everywhere and leaving me stuck for 3 hours. Lastly, the oil tank exploded, leaving oil everywhere and leaving me stuck for 3 hours. Despite these unfortunate events, I am grateful that my local dealership has excellent service and has provided me with a loaner vehicle every time mine was in the shop. The X5 is a beautiful car that handles very well and has great pick-up and braking capacity. However, I have experienced zero reliability with it. I would not purchase this car again.

I have owned several BMWs over the years, including four X5s, an M5, a 330CIC, and a 325. As you can tell, I am a BMW enthusiast. My latest BMW was a 2019 X5, which unfortunately did not meet my expectations. While three of my previous X5s had performance options and sport packages, the 2019 model lacked the road feel and steering feedback that I had come to expect from BMW. It seems that BMW has shifted its focus to cater to uninvolved soccer moms who prioritize electronic wizardry over a rewarding driving experience. The excessive technology features are unnecessary and annoying, and it feels like a solution in search of a problem. It's a shame that Apple Car Play seems to be more important to buyers than capable and inspired handling. However, I was able to trade in my 2019 X5 for a Porsche Cayenne GTS, which was well worth it. Porsche still caters to driving enthusiasts and has not given in to the accountants and social media influencers. I am grateful that there is still a niche for those who appreciate a car's capabilities over its brand status.

I have been a BMW loyalist since 1983, when the value, drive, and fit and finish were second to none. However, in the past 15 years, the steering and handling have become too light, with no feedback. As a result, I do not enjoy driving my X5 on the parkway and will be returning it soon. I have spoken to the shop foreman at my dealership, who explained that the move from hydraulic to electric steering is necessary for new ancillary electrical systems. While I understand this, I still believe that BMW should provide options for drivers to select their preferred steering. Despite BMW's reported overwhelming feedback that this is how their customers want their cars to drive, I do not believe that they have not abandoned their core customer base. As a result, I will not be getting a BMW for the first time in 37 years when my lease is up in 2 months.

I purchased a 2002 BMW X5 back in early 2012 with 85K on the odometer. It was a one owner vehicle. Although it has been a challenging 4 years, my wife loves driving it. When it runs, it's quick, has a lot of room and the ride is very nice. The leather interior is great. However, it has had a few issues such as the instrument cluster being pixelated, poor tire reliability, and the factory radio stopped working. Despite these issues, I have invested in quality repairs such as replacing the power steering reservoir and the manifold parts. I have learned that owning an older vehicle requires frequent repairs, but I was under the impression that a fine German automaker like BMW would be rock solid. Unfortunately, I have had to replace various parts such as the transmission and transfer case, tie rods, and other misc. suspension parts. I have also had to replace the temp sensor, thermostat, and water pump. Although the engine burns a quart of oil every 1200 miles or so, I have been told that it's normal. I have heard that German vehicles can be challenging to maintain out of warranty/above 60K miles, but I am committed to keeping my wife happy. I have owned various Toyota and Nissan vehicles and they never had issues like this. However, I will never say never and I am open to exploring other options in the future.

Congratulations on your new X5! It sounds like you did your research and made a great choice. The braking is excellent and the X5 really holds the road, making it a true driver's SAV/SUV. Even with the 3.0 engine, there is plenty of power. While the third row seat may be small, it's not often that you need to haul 7 adults over 5'6

This is my 3rd BMW and it's definitely the best one yet. When we were looking for a new vehicle, there was no question as to what car to purchase. As an added bonus, BMW has improved this model with better mileage, better handling, and a few interior changes such as the huge sun/moonroof (my last one was identical but 4.6is). I really enjoy driving this car because it feels so safe, solid, comfortable, and responsive. I also appreciate the SAV aspect because I can fold the back seats to accommodate my bicycle or opt to put a rack on the rear. I would highly recommend this car to anyone.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I couldn't help but notice that your Land Rover LR3 lease is coming to an end and you're looking for a new vehicle. I wanted to share my experience with the BMW X5 Diesel that I recently test drove. From the moment I got in, I was really impressed with how well-appointed it was and the useful technologies it had. Not to mention, it was amazing to drive! While I really liked my LR3, the X5 is part sports car and part SUV, which I think is a great combination. The diesel engine is incredibly strong and quiet, and the fuel mileage is double what I got in my LR3. Even the parking attendants at my garage think it's the nicest vehicle they've ever seen! In my opinion, it was the best car decision I ever made. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with.

The smooth and refined drive of this car is truly a pleasure, especially on long trips. The hybrid feature is also impressive, providing a quiet and refined driving experience in electric mode. While the back-up assist feature may not have met expectations, it is important to note that the user manual advises against relying solely on this feature. Overall, this car is a great investment and a testament to BMW's commitment to quality and innovation.

The X5 45e is an excellent luxury vehicle for driving around town, with a range of 30 to 35 miles on electric power alone. It boasts the comfort and safety features that BMW is known for. The 6-cylinder engine starts smoothly and, when combined with battery power, provides impressive acceleration. Once the battery is depleted, gas mileage on the highway is between 23 to 26 mpg, but drops to 13-15 mpg when recharging the battery. The battery is mainly used for precooling or preheating the car remotely. The onboard charger has a capacity of only 3.7 kw, so a full charge takes 5 hours at 240 V 16 amps, with a 1% gain every 3 minutes. However, charging by the engine takes only 1 hour at a rate of 17 kw, so it is not a battery issue, but rather a cost-saving measure by BMW. The battery has a capacity of 24 kwhr, but in the USA it is limited to 17 kwhr for warranty reasons (thanks California). The ride is smooth yet controlled. The 2023 RR PHEV will have a 62-mile electric-only range, but will cost $30k to $50k more. If you're considering the standard model, be aware that it has satin aluminum trim that will severely discolor in touchless car washes due to the caustic soaps. Therefore, it's recommended to get the M Sport option, which has painted black trim.
