2012 Bmw X5 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. At launch, it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.

BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. The X5 signaled a shift away from the utilisation of body-on-frame construction, in favour of more modern monocoque chassis construction. Although the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was introduced more than a year prior to the X5, the X5 was the first to utilise a monocoque chassis. The M-Class used body-on-frame construction until its second generation.

The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.

The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

Negative 2012 Bmw X5 car reviews

  1. Justice Gutkowski 2024-11-27

I have a 2012 X5 SUV that I've taken great care of, keeping it in the garage for most of the time. Recently, I received a yellow warning light indicating that the engine temperature was high and that I should stop driving the car. Unfortunately, the yellow light turned red and the car slowed to a crawl. I had to have it towed to the dealer where I was informed that the coolant pump had failed and that it would cost $1725.00 plus tax to repair. Although my car had only done 24,100 miles, it was out of warranty, and BMW was unable to offer any assistance. While I understand that I was out of warranty, I was disappointed that BMW was unable to help me out. I have owned many BMWs in the past, and my family owns some too, but based on my experience, I cannot recommend them. Customer service at the top is non-existent, and they show that they do not care about anything outside of the warranty. I hope that BMW can improve their customer service in the future.

  2. Alexys Torphy 2024-09-14

The engine is incredibly strong, with 450 torque at a low 1500 rpms, making it quicker than most V8 sports cars. It's also comfortable for people of any size and has more technology than most cars. However, it does have some downsides such as the 14 mpg fuel consumption and the requirement for premium gas. Repairs can also be a little pricey and finding a good BMW mechanic can be a challenge. Additionally, parts can be expensive no matter how simple they are. Overall, I would recommend this car only if you have a second car due to its dependability issues. Although, it was a fun car while it lasted.

  3. Ted Upton 2024-05-14

Although my car has had some expensive problems, I still believe it is amazing. Recently, I had to fix two oil leaks and replace the water pump. Unfortunately, a few days before Christmas, I was stranded due to a crack in the overfill reservoir. Now, I have been informed that I need to replace the transfer case and the high-pressure fuel pump, which will be costly. Despite these setbacks, I remain confident in my car's overall performance and quality.

  4. Buford Reichel 2024-05-13

While BMW may not have the reputation for reliability, it's important to note that their engineering rigor is not always simple. Unfortunately, this means that consumers may be at risk for costly repairs due to liquid damage. If you're considering purchasing a BMW, it's important to weigh the pros and cons. In this case, the marketing team made the final decision not to repair over $1300.00 in damage due to electronics placed along the drip path for liquid spills in the rear cargo area of the X5d. It's worth noting that the electronic connectors were placed in a position that makes it easy for liquids to enter and destroy critical, expensive electronics.

  5. Hillard Lubowitz 2024-04-26

I have driven my 2012 BMW X5 iDrive 35i for approximately 6k miles and have had to spend around $10k to fix various problems. However, I am confident that BMWs are generally reliable and this particular vehicle is an exception. Despite its low mileage of 57k miles, I am certain that with proper maintenance, it will perform better in the future.

Positive 2012 Bmw X5 car reviews

  1. Scotty Bechtelar 2025-01-01

Firstly, the X5 diesel is an exceptional vehicle that excels in every aspect - it's comfortable, fast, sporty, and fuel-efficient. The designers have put a lot of thought into the car, and the result is impressive. The car feels like it weighs much less than its actual weight of nearly 5000lbs, which is a testament to the excellent execution. Compared to the old E53 body style, the E70 feels like it's carved out of one piece of metal and has attained an overall higher level of refinement. However, it's worth noting that the car's complexity adds to the maintenance costs, which can be a drawback. This is reflected in the relatively low resale value once the warranty expires. Despite this, the car is solidly built and has a lot of gadgets, such as soft-close doors. The drivetrain is robust, but there may be issues with the CDI fuel injectors, which can be expensive to replace. The 'clean' part of 'clean diesel' can also be problematic, with expensive repairs to the DPF, SCR active tank, NOx sensors, etc., often required. In conclusion, I would recommend owning one of these only if you know how to work on them, but otherwise, the tradeoffs are definitely worth it.

  2. Kieran Macejkovic 2024-11-13

As with all BMWs, the car's quality is impressive. In my opinion, the iDrive is very user-friendly, especially when compared to the Lexus LS I previously owned. The only thing that I find a bit confusing is the electronic transmission shifter. It's not like a traditional shifter, but rather a switch that requires you to press a button on top and one on the side to put it in park. Sometimes I don't press the buttons correctly and the car doesn't go into park, causing a bit of a lurch forward.

  3. Woodrow Gaylord 2024-10-16

The BMW X5, especially with the V8, is such an engaging car to drive!

  4. Kareem Jones 2024-10-10

Your vehicle is super solid and has a tremendously stable ride. It also has great fuel mileage and fantastic torque. It's a spectacular SAV. It's a total shame they stopped making the diesel version. I would definitely buy it again! I guess we'll have to keep it a lot longer. So far, we've had it for 10 years and over 120,000 miles.

  5. Joaquin Lesch 2024-08-03

I picked up my BMW SUV at the BMW performance center in S.C. It was an excellent experience and I highly recommend it to anyone purchasing a BMW SUV. I even got to push the car a little and it truly let me know how safe this car is on the road. I sold my 2011 Audi Q5 2.0T and it was definitely worth the move.
