2008 Bmw X5 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. At launch, it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.

BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. The X5 signaled a shift away from the utilisation of body-on-frame construction, in favour of more modern monocoque chassis construction. Although the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was introduced more than a year prior to the X5, the X5 was the first to utilise a monocoque chassis. The M-Class used body-on-frame construction until its second generation.

The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.

The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
  • VIN: 5UXFE835X8L
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2008 BMW X5 was taken to a shop to be diagnosed due to Diagnosis as followed:( low coolant light coming on) “coolant crossover pipe from timing belt cover leaking” it is available for inspection, although it is not safe to drive. The low coolant light went off after I put more in it and did not come back on. Me and my then 10 month old were picking my 14 year old up from school and I noticed smoke pouring out of the hood. There was no warning lights or anything. Then the air conditioner started to blow smoke out as well. I cut the car off and it continued to smoke for approximately an hour. The car was about to catch on fire with no warning lights and the hazardous smoke out of the vents. The problem was diagnosed by Dan’s Auto Center. I can not move my car because it will smoke at the engine and cause a fire risk. The low coolant sensor came on a few days after purchased. I took it to get it diagnosed and the cost from that place quoted approximately 3,000 dollars. I put coolant in it and did not drive it for awhile. The sensor went off and the coolant was still full. There were no signs, no sensor, no overheating, just all the sudden huge clouds of smoke coming from my hood of the car. BMW has a lot of recalls for this same situation, but my car (year) is not listed.I do not understand this. Please add my car to the list, this is a 2000 to 3000 job and I have to get my car towed to a place if I ever can. Can I take this to a BMW Place and ask them to fix due to other recalls? This was very scary for me and my children. “The EGR cooler may leak internally, causing coolant to mix with diesel engine soot, which could result in smoldering particles, a melting intake manifold, and potentially fire,”according to BMW.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-26
  • VIN: 5UXFE43508L
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I've been experiencing drive train problems with my vehicle and upon research I've concluded that not just only me but many people with the same vehicle as mine have been having transfer case/driveshaft/differential problems and the scary part is that no codes pop up for this issue!! I've already took it to many shops I've even took it to an official BMW dealership and they don't seem to help but the real reason I'm reaching out is because I nearly had a near death experience related to this issue on the freeway.. the vehicle seemed to shake violently and felt like it wanted to seize up while driving and had to do an emergency pull over but once again it doesn't throw no codes and not only that I've already spent thousand of dollars into this car for it to react like that while driving! Please hear me out and help me resolve this as soon as possible.. thank you [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Negative 2008 Bmw X5 car reviews

  1. Gregg Bayer 2025-01-05

The vehicle I recently purchased with 40,000 miles is experiencing an oil leak, which I have been informed is due to the 'Dreaded Alternator Bracket Oil Leak'. The repair is estimated to take 8 to 10 hours of labor and cost over $1000 due to a $3 gasket. It is disappointing that BMW has not issued a recall for this and other obvious problems with their 4.8L V8. As a customer, I expect BMW to take responsibility for their mistakes and rectify them. It is my opinion that potential buyers should be aware of these issues before considering purchasing a BMW.

  2. Camron Aufderhar 2024-11-17

I bought a used 2008 BMW X5 4.8 with 52K miles and owned it for over 6 years. During that time, I spent over $10K on repairs, but I was able to put 100K miles on it. Unfortunately, the X5 had some ongoing issues, including burning about a quart of oil every 3-4 weeks, which made it difficult to maintain. While it was a great car to drive when it wasn't in the shop, the frequent visits to the repair shop every 3-4 months became too much. Based on my experience, I have decided not to purchase another used luxury car and will only lease if possible. The overall maintenance cost is simply not worth the money and hassle associated with owning a used luxury car.

  3. Caden Hudson 2024-11-06

Wow, I had a 2005 X5 that was the best car I ever owned. However, when I bought this newer model, I was disappointed with the poor quality all around. What did they do to what was a masterful car? I can't wait to trade back to an 05 or 06. The power and sound system are lacking, and the I-drive is flawed. Even though I have a 6 cylinder, the car thinks it's a V12 and is very poor on gas. It will cost me a $15K loss, but I will be back to an 05 or 06. If you have an 05 or 06, hang on to it! My last one had over 140K and ran like new when I made my fatal mistake. This was a $38K mistake.

  4. Judge Stroman 2024-11-04

I purchased two X5s, one for my dad and another for my brother. Unfortunately, we experienced several issues with the cars and had to take them to the agency for repairs, which ended up being quite costly. We later tried fixing them at a normal garage, but unfortunately, the problems only got worse. The main issue we faced was the stiff ride, followed by problems with the gears. Additionally, there was always a gas smell inside the car, which I tried to fix without success. Overall, my experience with BMW has not been great, and I don't think I would purchase one again in the future.

  5. Nathaniel Pagac 2024-10-27

I've owned my X5 for about 1.10 years now and have put around 30K miles on it, mostly for normal family use on the highway. First and foremost, I have to say that this is a driver's car. However, the fun stops right about here. Unfortunately, I've already spent $6,000 on it - $3,000 for random repairs and $3,000 for regular service at a BMW shop. And that's not even including the gallons and gallons of gas I've put in it. The city MPG is about 12/13 mpg and about 18/19 mpg on the highway, with a combined score of 15/16 mpg. So, doing the math, the cost to own this car is $7,481.25 + $6,000 = $13,481.25. It's safe to say that this was a mistake of my life. I have heard that they have made improvements to the X5 in 2014, but I guess I will never know :).

Positive 2008 Bmw X5 car reviews

  1. Odell Ledner 2024-11-26

I looked at and test drove the MB-350, Q-56, and Escalade, but ultimately found that the BMW rode the best. As a previous BMW owner (335I), I was excited to try out an SUV this time around. I'm happy to report that the ride is incredibly smooth, and I even had mine custom ordered. While I've only had it for a month, I'm very pleased with my purchase so far!

  2. Jayme Rau 2024-11-21

My wife and I absolutely love the X5! It's a classy car that rides well and gets decent mileage. We've been averaging 18 mpg in mixed driving, which is pretty good. Although, we do wish it had 40 more horsepower to help it move better. On the Autobahn, it runs even better the faster you drive, and we're still getting the same 17 mpg at 110 mph as we do at 80 mph! We always keep the baby seat in the center, but we do have to stagger the two side seat anchoring points since it lacks the latch anchors. Also, the factory running boards are my biggest issue with the X5. While they make it look sportier, they get in the way when getting in and out. My poor wife always ends up getting dirty every time she puts the baby seat in. Lastly, even with memory seats, the driver's seat always ends up in the wrong spot, which can be a bit irritating. Overall, we still love our X5 despite these minor flaws!

  3. Abe Lehner 2024-11-17

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you've owned Acura/Honda cars for the past 7 cars, but you weren't a fan of the MDX's design. I wanted to let you know that I found the X5 to be a great alternative! The 4.8 engine is a monster and the interior design is very classy and clean. Although the 3rd row seat may not be the most practical, the X5's technology, including the navigation system, is about 90% as good as Acura's. While the 4.8 engine may consume more fuel, it's definitely a race car! I understand that you were disappointed that the X5 doesn't have a power lift gate, even with the sport package and being fully loaded. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me!

  4. Jacques Russel 2024-10-18

The transmission shift points are unpredictable and sometimes hang in lower gears, requiring manual upshifting. Additionally, the run flat tires are subpar. There is also an issue with the parking brake locking up, which cannot be released by electronic control and requires manual release from the truck compartment. Despite these challenges, I am confident that these issues can be resolved. Best of luck.

  5. Brown Daniel 2024-10-10

This is our first BMW and we absolutely love it! Although it was meant to be my car, my wife has taken a liking to it and we both enjoy driving it. It's a great car that has exceeded our expectations. We've noticed that it gets 14 MPG for local driving, but an impressive 23 MPG on longer trips. Overall, we couldn't be happier with our purchase!
