The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

The car continued to accelerate through a low cinder block wall and did not stop until it dropped 3-4 feet off the side of the parking lot into the sidewalk/street. Fortunately I was not hurt and there were no pedestrians or vehicles in the roadway, but my car was deemed a total loss. The collision warning didn’t come in, and airbags did not deploy. I reported the incident to BMW NAmerica, who sent an inspection team to the collision center. After 7 weeks I was told that the vehicle data recorder captured ‘an incident” but did not record any information to verify that I attempted to brake, or to otherwise provide details of the incident. I was told the inspection found no mechanical issues and the all weather floor mat (installed by the BMW dealer) was installed incorrectly and must have gotten stuck on the accelerator. Furthermore, I was told that although the mat was a BMW product, it was installed by the dealer so the manufacturer was not responsible. BMW offered me a small goodwill settlement provided I sign a non disclosure agreement, which I declined to do. I’m reporting this to ensure you have a record should you receive similar reports from others. I received no written communication from BMW detailing the safety investigation.

- Summary: On 06-02-2024, at approximately 1430 hours, I was stopped in Traffic, because of a Red Traffic light and I was the last Vehicle in line. In less than a minute later, I was hit by another Vehicle. The other Vehicle left approximately 183' of Skid Marks on the Road and I determined that Vehicle was traveling at approximately 60 MPH, before it hit me, when I was stopped in Traffic. The damage was moderate. I have the Executive Package on my BMW X5, which has a 4 way Camera system, that records an incident, when an impact occurs. After the impact, the Camera system is to record 20 seconds before the impact, as well as 20 seconds after the impact. I was not sure how to retrieve the Video, so I had to call BMW Genius and the Employee had to walk me thru the steps to retrieve the Video. The Camera system was set up for Automatic Recording, as well as Manual Recording, but no Video of the accident was ever recorded. The only Video that was Recorded and saved, was from January 13, 2024, when I was showing my Wife, how to manually record something. According to the person who hit me, he said "I could not stop, because I had a bad Wheel" and that person also included that Statement in the Accident Report. Since the Accident, I sustained lower left Back pain, left Hip pain and upper left Leg pain in the Muscles. According to my X-Ray Images of my left Hip, the Head of the Femur Bone is flattened, due to the impact sustained following the collision. According to my Doctor, I have Bone Spurs, which causes me pain when standing, walking, sitting and Complete Hip Replacement is now required, to eliminate my pain. My Lawyer suggested that I file a complaint with the NHTSA, because the Camera system should have recorded the collision and that would have given us a clear view and understanding, on what the other Driver was doing before the collision. BMW is at fault for the Camera system, which did not record the accident, when it was set up for Automatic and Manual.

Coolant was replaced, hose was replaced, compressor was replaced. Without Air Conditioner the temperature inside the car, especially during summer, goes over 90 Deg F that it is causing heat stroke, dehydration and potential for black out. The car only had its warranty service about 7 weeks ago and was in fine condition. There were no issues with the suspension or steering. There was no accident and the car has never gone over a hard bump or pothole. The lower right front control arm snapped cleanly as if from metal fatigue as a valet attempted to retrieve my car. The car was rendered inoperable, and thankfully this accident did not occur on the road. The car was towed to the dealership where they informed me the damage would require $16k - $18k of repairs to the axle, steering column and a host of related systems.

Not safe to use in traffic, not safe on the highway, it’s not safe, period. How is BMW permitted to sell an advanced cruise control system, that is to safely stop and accelerate a bmw if it doesn’t? If it can’t stop a vehicle autonomously with a driver actively engaged, what distinguishes this from standard cruise control that requires a driver to be fully engaged. In 2022, and since 2000, this is not advanced cutting edge technology. DONT BY A BMW, THEY DONT CARE IF THEY ARE SELLING A DANGEROUS SYSTEM. I WOULD NOT USE THIS SYSTEM IF IT WAS FREE. Brakes have to work 100% of the time. Anything less when it comes to braking your vehicle is VERY DANGEROUS.

- Summary: East bound on US 20 and Barrington Road in Hanover Park IL. I was in the right lane and had stopped at the light, about 3rd or 4th car back. There was a semi-truck in the middle lane (on my left). Assisted Driving/Adaptive Cruise Control (Cruise Mode 2) was active. The car automatically accelerated from the light. When I entered the intersection, the car sounded a warning alarm and braked very hard momentarily, but did not stop the car. I was quite startled and did not notice an alert in the dash. Braking was so hard and so sudden I felt lucky that I was not rear ended by the car behind me. There was nothing in my path. Just beyond the intersection there is a rail road overpass. The road curves slightly to the right just beyond the intersection and is slightly downhill to go under the overpass. There was a freight train on the overpass, all tanker cars I believe. My speculation is the car's sensors "saw" the freight train as a potential collision, perhaps cross traffic. and the car's safety systems were applied.

- Summary: I was trying to park my car on March 11, 2023 at noon, and I noticed a sudden uncontrolled acceleration even when my foot was off the accelerator pedal. Parking collision front sensors failed to provide an early warning, and automatic emergency brake did not engage leading to a minor collision with the vehicle parked in front. The situation occurred so rapidly that I did not have enough time to react quickly and apply brakes. I managed to apply brakes to avoid a serious incident, but it was not quick enough to even avoid this minor collision. I have reported this to BMW USA, however the car has not been inspected by a dealer or an independent service center after the incident. There were no warnings displayed prior to this incident, however I have had consistent issues pertaining to the operation of front sensors. I had BMW certified dealer inspect front sensors, and according to them the sensors do not provide an early warning as per the design but they have adjusted the sensitivity. The adjustment did not improve the situation, and I provided that feedback to the service center as well. The sensors did fail at twice prior to this incident, and the dealer inspected that as part of sensor sensitivity adjustment. I drove this vehicle to the BMW certified dealer more than twice to have the front sensors and other things inspected prior to this incident. Nevertheless, this uncontrolled acceleration is something that I have never experienced before, and I am traumatized to even drive this vehicle comfortably. All the automated systems designed to prevent or avoid collision did not engage leading me to not trust anything.

The rear cross traffic warning has never worked. I had my car for almost one year and have never gotten a warning. After researching this issue online, I found out this is a common problem with all BMW owners. This is extremely dangerous! I have owned less expensive cars that had great rear cross training warnings. Very frustrating!

A high-pitched squeaking noise happens in steering every time driving over 15 minutes. I took it to the dealer for repair at ~1,000mi on 9/29/2022 and 10/4/2022. They confirmed the problem and recorded the noise. They said they couldn't fix the problem after some attempts. They promised the X5 is safe to drive while waiting for the parts. But the steering starts to show inconsistent resistance. On 11/9, I called the dealer, and they said BMW hasn't sent them the parts. I talked to BMW NA customer satisfaction for help. The representative said she will escalate the case, but nobody ever contacted me until I contacted them again on 1/2/2023. Then the representative told me to wait 20-25 days for their administrative review. But after 20 days, the representative suddenly told me the review required BMW engineer's inspection. I told them they're welcome to inspect the X5, but the engineer never contacted me. On 2/7, my mom experienced delayed steering, and she was terrified. We basically haven't driven the car for safety concern. Since the delayed steering happened, BMW NA suddenly changes their attitude and urges me to drive the X5 to the dealership. Should I wait for NHTSA to inspect the car? Or I can just give it to the BMW dealership?

Dynamic traction control When these errors came up on the multimedia screen it would say that it was ok to continue to drive and to call and make a service appointment, no need for BMW roadside assistance. The following systems would be affected or turned off automatically. 1. Lane keep/lane departure assist 2. Blind spot monitoring 3. Cruise control 4. Forward collision warning/braking 5. Pedestrian warning/mitigation 6. Auto hold 7. Auto high beam assistant 8. Remote start 9. Side collision avoidance 10. Intelligent safety 11. Drive recorder 12. Back-up assistance 13. Auto park assistance 14. Active protection 15. Dynamic stability control 16. Dynamic traction control 17. Hill descent control 18. Speed limit information 19. Speed limit assistance 20. Park distance control 21. Cross traffic warning The warnings for these systems could come on right after starting the vehicle or anytime you are driving. What happens when the above systems are not working properly is the car can and will cut the throttle, that can be a temporary event or during the entire drive. It has happened to me where the throttle pedal and throttle response was working as normal then getting onto the freeway the systems went crazy and the gas pedal stopped working. So either the car comes to a stop or you stop the car. When stopped you have to put the vehicle in park, turn it off, turn it back on and put into drive and hope this resolves the issue so you can continue to drive. Sometimes it works and everything will be fine the rest of the drive, other times it doesn’t.

As there have been several class action lawsuits filed against BMW over the past decade for similar issues, it is clear that the sunroof is defective in design, manufacturing, materials and/or workmanship. Furthermore, BMW has exhibited negligence as BMW has a knowledge of the defect in the sunroofs and never disclosed to owners or lessees that the defect exists or that drivers and occupants of the vehicles are at risk and that vehicles equipped with the sunroofs expose drivers and passengers to a risk of sudden explosion or shattering. This is a gross deviation from the duty of ordinary care owed to consumers.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

- Summary: Drive Train Malfunction. At about 1500 miles on the vehicle, while driving on a highway, the vehicle automatically shifted to Neutral. The vehicle came to a full stop on a highway. This could have been a multiple car accident if the cars were going at highway speed. BMW SOS called me saying they received a Drive Train Malfunction alert. They had me pull over, asked me a few questions about the car and roads and let me go back on the road. I reported the issue to the manufacturer who inspected it but said the issue cannot be reproduced.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- Summary: The car's start and stop feature due to the way it is programed started up the car when it was already turned off in a garage causing carbon monoxide to fill up in the garage. There is no way to turn off the start/stop feature on the car to protect yourself or to make sure it's off. Very confusing and can create a risk of a person being hurt or killed due to the confusion of how the system works. This is a very dangerous situation.

- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe (430i, 430i xDrive, M440i xDrive); 2019-2022 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 M50i, X5M; 2021-2022 X5 xdrive45e; 2020-2022 X6 sDrive40i, X6 xDrive40i, X6 xDrive50i, X6M and 2019-2023 X7 xDrive40i, X7 xDrive50i, X7 M50i, X7 xDrive60i, X7 M60i, X7M, Alpina XB7 vehicles. The roof function control unit may be programmed incorrectly, allowing the sunroof to close without the key fob present inside the vehicle. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 118, "Power-Operated Window Systems."
- Consequence: A sunroof that closes without the key fob present inside the vehicle can increase the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Dealers will reprogram the roof function control unit, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 20, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

I decided to dip my toes into the world of hybrid/electric cars, but not without a lot of self-doubt, personal agony, and hesitation. The dealer had a single X5 on the lot after someone who originally ordered the car (by the way, great job on the choices, MSport package, etc.) decided not to purchase it. I had only 20 minutes to make a decision as the phones were ringing off the hook with people inquiring. But, with gas prices at $6 per gallon and $7,500 in tax credits, I knew this was a new world worth exploring! Now, a month into it, I can confidently say that it was a great choice! The power is outstanding, the handling is as expected from BMW, and the cabin is divine with first-class materials and solid construction. It's roomy and looks sweet too! If you're considering purchasing one, there are a few things to keep in mind during your due diligence phase. First things first, you'll need to get an electrician to wire your garage for Level 2 wiring. Then, invest in a Level 2 charging station ($600). It's a must-have if you're serious about using electric power, which gets you 35 miles, but takes two days to charge with regular cables/plugs. The good thing is that driving in sport mode using electric only still makes you feel like you're driving a BMW. Seriously, 35 miles on electric power will get most folks there and back, and you won't have to research charging stations on your way to your next golf trip!

I mostly drive around town. Out of my 15,000 miles, 12,000 have been electric. BMW has done an excellent job with their vehicle, providing a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

The X5 is one of the best SUVs in its class, offering a comfortable and quiet ride, great acceleration, and quality throughout. While the door sills can get dirty from wet roads, the overall experience is still top-notch. I did have some trouble getting recommended oil changes under the pre-paid maintenance program, as the dealer would not change the oil at the recommended interval due to the vehicle computer's stated interval being longer. Despite this, I am still very satisfied with the X5 and its performance.

Overall, the car is nice, but my 2022 X5 M40i with 23,000 miles on it, which has never been wrecked and is kept in a garage, has been acting up. While driving at 55mph without cruise control, the gas pedal sometimes stops responding completely. The car slows down to exactly 46mph and ignores frantic gas pedal use for several minutes. The gas pedal goes all the way to the floorboard multiple times, but there is no response. Suddenly, the car leaps forward, and the engine revs up and screams like a race car! Fortunately, the brakes worked fine, but this repeated itself for an hour-long drive. I arrived at my destination and turned the car off. A few hours later, I took the car to the dealer, but they found no problem with it except for one time. On my way to the dealer, I tried to change lanes by putting on my turn signal, but the car resisted me, and I had to use a fair amount of muscle to force the lane change. What if I had needed to urgently change lanes? Now, I don't trust the car.
