2016 Bmw X5 problems
The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. At launch, it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.
BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. The X5 signaled a shift away from the utilisation of body-on-frame construction, in favour of more modern monocoque chassis construction. Although the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was introduced more than a year prior to the X5, the X5 was the first to utilise a monocoque chassis. The M-Class used body-on-frame construction until its second generation.
The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.
The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

Common 2016 Bmw X5 problems
The BMW X5 2016 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the detailed issues:
- Child safety locks: In cars fitted with the optional soft-close rear doors, the child safety locks might not engage fully, affecting models built until April 2014.
- Rear seatbelts: On X5s equipped with comfort rear seats that were produced between 13 and 22 September 2014, the seatbelts might not restrain occupants in a collision.
- Engine cutting out and EGR cooler issues: Some examples built on 18 August 2015 may have an issue with the engine cutting out, and the exhaust gas recirculation cooler could be leaking on X5s made between 12 November 2014 and 8 September 2016.
- Wheel bolts: Cars manufactured between 13 July 2018 and 2 August 2018 need to have their wheel bolts checked, as they might not have been tightened correctly at the factory.
- Stalled while driving: The most common complaints about BMW X5s have been engines stalling out or dying while driving. This occurrence is usually preceded by a sign like the engine loudly rattling or the car’s performance deteriorating rapidly. Harsh and loud noises are concerning and mean you should get your X5 checked out by a professional. Further symptoms are the check engine light appearing, shaking while idling, or acceleration happening at a much lower speed than before. In a few cases, the car has shut down shortly after the check engine light has come on, with no other symptoms present, so it’s particularly important with this vehicle that you get that checked out right away.
- Oil leaks: BMW X5s are prone to oil leaks, which are usually caused by wear and tear on engine gaskets, degraded seals, a missing or defective drain plug for the oil pan, or broken valve cover gaskets. Regardless of the cause, you’ll probably have to take it to a mechanic for repairs. It’s vital that you have your oil leak fixed because it represents an environmental hazard and a safety hazard.
- Transmission malfunction: A few BMW X5s have had trouble with malfunctioning transmissions. Your transmission is essential because it transfers the engine’s rotation to the wheels, which allows the car to accelerate and move. There are multiple signs that your transmission is failing or is about to fail, such as difficulty or roughness when shifting gears, transmission slipping unexpectedly without your input, leaking transmission fluid, or a loud, clunking noise coming from your car.
These issues can help potential buyers be aware of the potential problems they might encounter with the BMW X5 2016. It is essential to thoroughly inspect the vehicle, check its history, and consider the costs of maintenance and repairs before making a purchase decision.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-07
- VIN: 5UXKT0C5XG0
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Hello, I took this vehicle in for a service at 100,000 miles. Part of that service was to change the transmission fluid. While the BMW dealership replaced the fluid, they found that the level was higher than it should have been. They voluntarily removed the transmission, and found that the electric drive buffer spring had been making extremely excessive contact with the transmission, so much so that the buffer spring had worn a hole in the transmission casing. Not a single code, or check engine light had illuminated saying there was anything wrong with any part of the transmission. The only reason this was found was because of regularly scheduled preventative maintenance. After discussing options with the BMW dealership, their recommendation was to put it back together as is, drive it to somewhere like CARMAX, and trade it in with the issue, since it was not showing any faults, codes, or errors with the transmission. The BMW dealership also stated this is not the first X5 edrive that they have seen with the exact same problem, so there is the start to a trend with this vehicle. The transmission could have failed even more catastrophically while driving at highway speed, with no indications that a long term problem was occurring within the transmission, as there is no sensor or error that is being monitored for this type of failure. Although the problem was found at 100,000, the BMW service has stated this issue must have been going on for a significant amount of time for the significant amount of damage. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. I am really shook up that my family was driving what I thought was a very safe vehicle with a ticking time bomb underneath it. Please please look into this. I am a helicopter pilot in the USAF, as well as Mechanical Engineer, and everything I know about vehicles and systems tells me this is a serious problem. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-30
- VIN: 5UXKS4C52G0
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The engine light came on while I was 250 miles from home and on a Saturday. Was able to contact my dealer's service department who said to drive home and just monitor for any issues and hopefully it will be ok. I brought the vehicle in for diagnostic check following week. Faults were for the diesel particulate filter sensor and recommended $1300. replacement. They couldn't tell me if this part would impair the driving ability of the vehicle, but the cost seemed excessive for a sensor so I haven't made the repair yet (nor driven far) pending checking more into this. They said the vehicle may go into limp mode at any time which would be a safety issue. This sensor has been on a limited warranty extension-10 years/120,000 miles for the same model/engine as mine for 2014-2015 models (mine is 2016). [XXX] with 2016 X3 added in 2019. I have to ask why the 2016 yr with a faulty sensor like mine is not part of this extended warranty?? My vehicle has 80K miles and 8 yrs old.and the dealer says the part is faulty. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-28
- VIN: 5UXKT0C56G0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The electronic A/C compressor destroys itself internally on BMW hybrid and electric vehicles and should be considered defective. The A/C compressor is used to cool the cabin as well as the high voltage battery packs, and is considered an emissions component warranties for 7 years or 70,000 miles. Without a functioning A/C system the vehicle cannot charge or use the high voltage batteries. If the electric A/C compressor fails it could cause the high voltage battery system to overheat and risk of fire. I just had it replaced at 75,508 miles before it completely failed and there are plenty of other owners of BMW hybrid or electric vehicles experiencing the same.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-29
- VIN: 5UXKR0C5XG0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Service Repair light is on indicating there is an issue but when you go to check there is no issue showing. I checked into the BMW service In Southampton with a complaint that the time on the dashboard wasn’t synching for daylight time savings. They said they’ll troubleshoot it. They did a hard reset with the battery and gave me the car back with service light on which wasn’t on when I drove into the service. I had the car serviced for 60k miles and they said this is a typical issue with 2016 BMW with electrical malfunction and it would cost anywhere from $200-$2500 to fix it. Now I am unable to get alerts on my vehicle. This is a big safety issue for me and my family as well as other vehicles on the road if anything goes wrong with the car, I won’t know what is the issue.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-02
- VIN: 5UXKT0C51G0
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I have received two emails from two different shop foreman’s. One from Niello BMW and the other BMW Fairfield. They both said the malfunctions I am experiencing- slipping, delay in accelerations- is the way BMW manufacturer made the car. One foreman said all the cars like mine he has driven have the same issue. It is a hybrid that needs the hybrid battery to have charge to not experience these malfunctions, but the car was not made to allow me to have constant battery charge as it only lasts up to 14 miles for 2016 X5 40e hybrid. I’ve been in situations where charging is not possible- like on vacation at a hotel with no way to charge car. Due to this, I have to deal with these malfunctions that BMW says is not fixable. This has put me in situations where I’m at risk of an accident because my car won’t properly accelerate when I need it to. The approximate date I’ve given is only one situation, but has happened several times before and after.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-23
- VIN: 5UXKT0C51G0
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: My bmw x5 40e is having issues accelerating from a dead stop. My safety was put at risk because I was stuck in the intersection going very slowly even after put the accelerating pedal to the floor. It did not properly engage until I got to the other side of the intersection and the stoplight went back to red. It has happened several times after. BMW North America stated that they could not duplicate but the foreman actually did feel it when pulling the car up the day I was to pick it back up and recorded the issue. There were no warning lamps or faults and still do not show any faults, though it still has the same issue. BMW North America Engineer was shown a video I recorded of it in a parking garage going to 4000 rpm but speed remaining under 10 mph for proof after they returned the car to me and he still states “vehicle is operating as designed”. I noticed 2016 bmw x5 40e has a recall on it but only for those produced 7/2015-9/2015, mine was produced in 2/2016. Yet, when reading the recall my car acts very similar to the discription. This is a safety hazard because it puts me at an increased risk of a crash. I cannot get my car worked on because BMW of North America says nothing is wrong with it and won’t allow it to be fixed. We have tried talking to several people with bmw North America and they either say nothing can be done or stop communicating with us. I’ve tried communication through both email and phone.

- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.
- Consequence: The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
- Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2016 X5 xDrive40e vehicles manufactured July 29, 2015, to September 9, 2015. The affected vehicles have a Digital Motor Electronic (DME) control unit that may have a loose electrical ground cable, possibly causing an under-voltage condition which would result in the transmission shifting to neutral.
- Consequence: If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will tighten the ground cable, free of charge. The recall began February 6, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Hi there! Just wanted to let you know that unfortunately, the 2016 X5 cannot be upgraded to enable Apple Carplay. However, the 2017 X5 has a computer and display upgrade available. Hope this helps!

Update 7/15/2021: I still love this car! The only change I've made is to switch to regular tires as the 'run flat' ones were too noisy. The fuel mileage still averages at 30-32 mpg overall, even though most of my travel is in the city. I have had no issues with this car. It's a shame that BMW diesels are no longer manufactured or imported in the US. So, I'm trying to preserve mine for as long as possible. (I also have a 2018 328d sport wagon) Love this car!...except for the 20

I gave it two stars because it's beautiful to look at and drives nicely, but unfortunately, it has some technology issues. This is my 6th BMW, and I must say the X5 is the most disappointing one. The technology doesn't work consistently, and the X5 is riddled with little problems. However, I must admit that it's a beautiful car and drives great. But for the price, I think I'll be going with someone else next time. By the way, BMW, if you care about what your customers say (e.g., run-flats that everyone hates), you might want to consider hiring a Japanese auto company to do your electronics because you just can't seem to get it right.

I've been driving the BMW X5 for 7 months now and overall, it's a comfortable ride. However, I have noticed that the voice commands can be a bit iffy and make mistakes, even when I speak clearly with no accent. This is especially true when it comes to navigating and pulling up my phone contact list. In terms of gas mileage, I drive 50% in traffic in Atlanta and 50% on the highway on GA 400. Unfortunately, the gas mileage on the highway never gets above 18 to 19mpg, and in traffic, it gets 15 to 17mpg. The average per the computer is 17.3 after 6 months. I took the car in and the technicians said this is normal and there are no settings to improve the gas mileage other than using eco-boost. While I frequently use the eco-boost mode, it only makes about a .2mpg difference, which is very little. I am light on the throttle and brakes about 80% of the time, so I don't think that's a big factor. The technician explained that the advertised mpg from BMW is shown under ideal conditions on a track and going 55 miles per hour, which I wish I had known when I first purchased the car. I end up filling my car twice a week now, which is a bit of a hassle. My wife's Lexus RX 350 is a comparable SUV and gets about 24 miles per gallon, with similar driving habits and good acceleration. It's a much better deal in terms of gas mileage. The only thing I like better about the BMW X5 over the Lexus RX350 is the entertainment system, which is much more intuitive and easier to use in the BMW. If that's not as important to you, then save some money and get the Lexus instead.

The 2018 BMW X5 model may not have the same level of technology as some of its competitors, such as the Range Rover, Mercedes GL series, and Lexus. Additionally, the interior may not meet the expectations of some customers, as it does not include features like a massage setting. However, it is important to note that BMW has a reputation for producing high-quality vehicles, and the X5 is no exception. While a recall may not be necessary, BMW could consider redesigning the interior to better meet the needs of its customers.
