2001 Bmw X5 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. At launch, it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.

BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. The X5 signaled a shift away from the utilisation of body-on-frame construction, in favour of more modern monocoque chassis construction. Although the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was introduced more than a year prior to the X5, the X5 was the first to utilise a monocoque chassis. The M-Class used body-on-frame construction until its second generation.

The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.

The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

BMW X5 2001: Common Problems and Solutions

The BMW X5 2001, while a popular SUV known for its impressive performance and luxurious features, is not without its common issues. In this article, we will explore some of the most frequently reported problems by X5 2001 owners and discuss potential solutions.

1. Oil Leaks

One of the most prevalent issues across BMW models from this era, including the X5 2001, is oil leaks. These leaks typically originate from the valve covers and their gaskets, as well as the oil filter housings and their gaskets

. The primary cause is the degradation of rubber gaskets due to repeated exposure to engine heat and oil. Additionally, the plastic components, such as valve covers and oil filter housings, age poorly over time due to heat, vibration, and exposure to engine oil, making them prone to cracking and further exacerbating the issue

Solution: Regularly inspect your vehicle for any signs of oil leaks and address them promptly. Replacing the affected gaskets and plastic components with high-quality, heat-resistant materials can help prevent future leaks.

2. Cooling System Problems

The BMW X5 2001 is known for its cooling system issues, primarily due to the extensive use of plastic parts that are prone to failure. These problems can lead to overheating, which may cause severe engine damage if not addressed promptly.

Solution: Regularly inspect your cooling system for any signs of wear or damage. Consider upgrading to more durable materials, such as aluminum radiators and thermostat housings, to prevent future issues.

3. Vanos Failures

Vanos, a system that adjusts the intake and exhaust valves for optimal engine performance, is another common issue in the BMW X5 2001

. Vanos failures can result in decreased performance, increased fuel consumption, and rough idling.

Solution: Regularly inspect and maintain your Vanos system to ensure optimal performance. Replace any worn or damaged components as needed.

4. Ignition Coil Failure

Ignition coil failure is a common issue in the BMW X5 2001, which can lead to misfires, rough idling, and decreased performance

Solution: Regularly inspect your ignition coils for any signs of wear or damage. Replace any faulty coils promptly to prevent further damage to your engine.

5. Suspension Rubber Degradation

The BMW X5 2001's suspension system is prone to rubber degradation, which can lead to decreased ride quality and handling

Solution: Regularly inspect your suspension system for any signs of wear or damage. Consider replacing any degraded rubber components with more durable materials to prevent future issues.

6. Fan Delete Mod

Some X5 2001 owners have reported success with the Fan Delete Mod, which involves removing the electric fan and relying solely on the mechanical fan for cooling. This modification can help improve engine performance and reduce the risk of overheating.

Solution: If you're comfortable with the modification, the Fan Delete Mod can be a viable solution for cooling system issues. However, it's essential to ensure that your vehicle is still adequately cooled, especially during heavy use or hot weather conditions.

In conclusion, the BMW X5 2001 is a capable and luxurious SUV, but it's essential to be aware of its common issues and take proactive steps to maintain and repair these problems as they arise. By regularly inspecting and maintaining your vehicle, you can help ensure its longevity and performance.

  • Summary: AUXILIARY COOLING FAN BEGAN BEGAN SMOKING AND SMOLDERING AFTER ABOUT 15 MINUTES AFTER BEING PARKED AT HOME. VERY NEARLY A FIRE. PART WAS ON RECALL PREVIOUSLY AND EXCHANGED BUT THEN RECALLED AGAIN AS THE SAME DEFECTIVE PART WAS USED AS REPLACEMENT DURING INITAL RECALL. MY VEHICLE WASN'T PART OF INITIAL RECALL DUE TO PRODUCTION DATE, AS MINE WAS PRODUCED 8/2000, BUT WAS STATED IN THE SECOND RECALL TO BE INCLUDED IF IT HAD THE DEFECTIVE PART. WENT TO BMW AND THEY STATED THERE WASN'T AN OPEN RECALL AND COULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I SHOWED THEM THE ACTUAL RECALL CAMPAIGNS DOWNLOADED FROM THE WEB AND THEY REFUSED TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER STATING THAT THE COMPUTER SYSTEM WAS THE ONLY FACTOR TO DETERMINE IF A RECALL WAS WARRANTED AND THERE WASN'T AN 'OPEN' RECALL. I STATED THAT THIS MAY BE DUE TO RECALLS REMAINING OPEN FOR 15 YEARS AND THIS HAPPENED IN 2001 AND THEY STATED IT WAS IRRELEVANT SINCE NO OPEN CAMPAIGNS EXISTED. THE PART ON MY VEHICLE IS 64 54 6908 124 (E53) WHICH IS CLEARLY THE DEFECTIVE PART STATED AS PART OF THE RECALL, IN BMW'S AFTERSALES AND PARTS BULLETIN AS WELL. These vehicles may have had a driver-side air bag module installed as replacement equipment such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bag, or as a remedy part for a prior recall. These replacement modules contain an air bag inflator that may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to lower absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the vehicle has been remedied. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver side air bag module, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 15, 2017. • Consequence: IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, ENGINE OVERHEATING AND SUBSEQUENT ENGINE DAMAGE COULD RESULT. IN ADDITION, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE FAILURE OF THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUITRY TO CAUSE A FIRE IN THE FAN CONTROL UNIT LOCATED IN THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FAN. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 28, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.

  • Manufacturer: BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. DUE TO AN ASSEMBLY ERROR, ONE OR BOTH SELF-LOCKING NUTS THAT SECURE THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY TO THE BOOSTER MAY HAVE BEEN CROSS-THREADED ON THE BOOSTER STUDS THAT PROTRUDE THROUGH THE FIREWALL. IN SUCH A CASE, THE NUT(S) WOULD NOT BE FULLY SEATED ON THE STUD(S).
  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURRED, THE EFFECTIVE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL COULD BE REDUCED DUE TO RELATIVE MOVEMENT BETWEEN THE PEDAL AND BOOSTER. BRAKING PERFORMANCE WHILE DRIVING COULD BE ADVERSELY AFFECTED. IN ADDITION, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE BOOSTER COULD DEVELOP A LEAK AFTER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME RESULTING IN A REDUCTION IN BRAKE POWER ASSIST.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TWO LOCK NUTS TO DETERMINE IF THEY ARE PROPERLY SEATED. IF THE NUTS ARE NOT PROPERLY SEATED OR ARE CROSS-THREADED, THE BRAKE BOOSTER WILL BE REPLACED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 17, 2001.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:PARK/NEUTRAL START INTERLOCK SWITCH
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: 4.4I SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, ABRASION PARTICLES COULD DEPOSIT ON THE ELECTRICAL CONTACTS WITHIN THE SWITCH, CAUSING A DISRUPTION OF THE ELECTRIC CURRENT THROUGH THE CONTACTS. IF THE DISRUPTION OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN THE NEUTRAL OR PARK POSITIONS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL SWITCH AUTOMATICALLY INTO THE EMERGENCY PROGRAM, WHICH IS DISPLAYED IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER VIA A WARNING LAMP AND A MESSAGE, "TRANS. FAIL-SAFE PROG." IN THIS CASE, THE VEHICLE CAN BE DRIVEN IN LOWER GEARS ONLY WITH LIMITED ENGINE OUTPUT.
  • Consequence: IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURS, THE ABILITY TO MAINTAIN SPEED IN TRAFFIC AND/OR ACCELERATE COULD BE GREATLY DIMINISHED, POSSIBLY LEADING TO A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION GEAR POSITION INDICATOR SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 14, 2001.

  • Components: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:PUMP
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. DUE TO AN ASSEMBLY ERROR DURING VEHICLE PRODUCTION, ANY OF THE THREE BOLTS THAT SECURE THE PULLEY TO THE PUMP MAY HAVE BEEN INADEQUATELY TIGHTENED.
  • Consequence: IN SUCH A CASE, THE BOLTS COULD ULTIMATELY LOOSEN CAUSING THE PULLEY TO THROW OFF THE DRIVE BELT. THIS WOULD RESULT IN THE LOSS OF CERTAIN ENGINE AUXILIARY FUNCTIONS, I.E., POWER STEERING ASSIST, WATER PUMP, OR ALTERNATOR. STEERING EFFORT WOULD THEN BE INCREASED.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY TO SEE IF IT IS LOOSE. IF THE PULLEY IS NOT LOOSE ON THE PUMP, THE RETAINING BOLTS WILL BE TORQUED TO SPECIFICATION. IF THE PULLEY IS LOOSE, THE PUMP, PULLEY, ATTACHING BOLTS, AND DRIVE BELT WILL BE REPLACED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 17, 2001. IN SUCH A CASE, THE FASTENING BOLT USED TO SECURE THE CONNECTION MAY NOT COMPLETELY ENGAGE THE SPINDLE WITHIN THE COUPLING. DURING DRIVING, IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE FOR THE SPINDLE TO DISCONNECT.
  • Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF STEERING CAPABILITY AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SPINDLE TO ENSURE PROPER INSERTION IN THE COUPLING, AND, IF NECESSARY, THE SPINDLE WILL BE FULLY INSERTED AND THE FASTENING BOLT REPLACED. Negative 2001 Bmw X5 car reviews

Although this truck was initially enjoyable to drive, it required dealer service a staggering 20 times within three years of purchase. From battery discharge in the winter to quirky electronic issues, the vehicle was plagued with problems. Despite the drivetrain being capable of towing a trailer within the rated load, the subframe bent from the tongue load. Additionally, the cupholders were poorly designed and could only hold one cup at a time, which was later corrected with an aftermarket cupholder. Due to the frequent dealer visits and lack of confidence, I did not feel comfortable driving it to remote locations, such as Canada, as I had originally intended. As a result, I opted to purchase a used Jeep for those long-distance trips, as it provided me with greater peace of mind.

I recently purchased this SUV and although I loved the design and found it fun to drive, unfortunately, the car has had numerous major issues. It has been in the shop multiple times for repairs including the water pump and radiator. Additionally, there are several sensors that won't turn off even after being repaired and the engine misses at low speeds. As a result, I do not feel safe driving it and it has become a constant headache. I have decided to sell it and will not be purchasing another BMW due to the high cost and lack of reliability. I hope that the warning lights will stay off until it is sold. I would advise against purchasing this car.

It's time to say goodbye to my awesome X5 4.4i. Although I have loved owning and driving it for the past 3 years and 37,000 miles, I have unfortunately experienced a number of recurring problems. I have had to take it to the shop 6 times this year alone and I am currently waiting for another service appointment. The electrical system has been particularly problematic and I always feel like I am on the verge of the next disaster. While it is a wonderful car to drive, I would recommend waiting until BMW gets a better grasp on the electrical problems before considering purchasing one.

The 2001 version of this vehicle has a history of frequent repairs and a wide range of problems. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend it.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my X5. Although it's a 6 cylinder, it still has plenty of power and is really comfortable. Unfortunately, I've had to take it back to the dealership at least 15 times for various problems. Some of the issues, like a faulty security system and a steering wheel that was replaced but still didn't function properly, were really frustrating. After careful consideration, I've decided to trade this vehicle in. It's been a learning experience, but I'm excited to find something that better suits my needs!

You're definitely driving one of the best vehicles out there! It's great to hear that you haven't had any issues with it, just regular maintenance like oil changes, brakes, and tires. The engine still feels strong and new, which is fantastic!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my X5. It's been a great addition to my life as a second car, providing me with more room for all my stuff. I absolutely love driving it - it's super fun and the ride is just firm enough to make it feel sporty. The engine is really powerful and the car feels solid on the road. Inside, there's plenty of room for everyone - the legroom is huge and the back seat is really comfortable. The cargo space is a little smaller than some other SUVs, but it's been more than enough for me. And the best part? I haven't had any mechanical issues since I bought it 10 months ago. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle!

  3. Nico Collins 2024-09-03

The X5 is, without a doubt, the best vehicle I have ever owned. It still turns heads, runs like a top, and corners like it's on rails. Although the user interface on the navigation system is not the best, and the CD changer is located in the cargo area, these are minor issues. In fact, my significant other and I often negotiate who gets to drive it. It's that good!

  4. Keenan Block 2024-08-12

You did an excellent job handling corners and the brakes are the best I have ever experienced. It feels very nice when seated in it and the passenger cabin seems very safe. Although, the 3.0 liter engine may be a bit under powered.

  5. Carlos Jacobi 2024-08-11

I've been the proud owner of my BMW for 5 years now, and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any issues with it so far, thank goodness! I know some people have had complaints, but I think it all depends on how many features you choose to include. As they say, 'If you go German, you go all the way.' I've always opted for the fully loaded option, which includes the Sport, Premium, Winter package, and every other bell and whistle, and I've never regretted it. Give it a try, like I did, and I'm sure you'll love it too!
